Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer for both men and women in this country, and in 2002 more than 17,000 individuals were diagnosed with the disease. Don't wait. If you think you are at risk for colorectal cancer, talk to your health care professional now. Early detection and treatment could save your life or the life of a loved one.
1. What is colorectal cancer?
Colorectal cancer begins in the cells of the colon or the rectum. Both the colon and the rectum are muscular tubes lined with glandular cells. The majority of colorectal cancers start in the glandular cells. The colon (known as the large bowel or intestine) joins the small intestine to the rectum. Cancer of the small intestine is very rare, so when you hear someone talk about bowel cancer, they usually mean colorectal cancer.
2. What causes colorectal cancer?
There is no single cause of colorectal cancer, but some factors appear to increase the risk of developing it, including:

               Age (men and women) - particularly after 50
               Polyps - small growths on the inner wall of the colon and rectum

4. How is colorectal cancer diagnosed?
After completing a physical examination (including a rectal exam) and discussing your overall health with you, your doctor may suspect colorectal cancer. A fecal occult blood test (FOBT) may also be taken to determine if there is blood in your stool. In addition, the FOBT test will show your doctor if there is bleeding in your colon. Bleeding may come from polyps.
Other tests to confirm colorectal cancer include a colonoscopy, a type of telescope that is used to examine the inside of the colon, a sigmoidoscopy, a test used to view the inside lining of the rectum and a part of the colon, or a barium enema which uses an x-ray to look at the colon.
5. When should you get screened for colorectal cancer?
The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that men and women 50 and older have a fecal occult blood test at least every two years. Individuals who fall into one of the high risk groups are those with a personal or family medical history of colorectal cancer, benign polyps, inflammatory bowel disease or breast, ovarian or endometiral cancer. These individuals should talk to their doctor about earlier screening.
6. Why is screening for colorectal cancer important?
Screening tests for colorectal cancer can save lives. It is treatable and often curable when detected early. In addition, testing will help to identify the grade of your cancer cells and what treatment action is required.
7. What treatment options are available for colorectal cancer?
Treatment for colorectal cancer depends mostly on the size, location, and extent of the tumor, as well as a person's overall health. Surgery to remove the tumor and radiation is the most common treatment in the earlier stages of the disease. Chemotherapy treatments such as Camptosar® are used in the later stages when the cancer has spread to other areas of the body.
Other chemotherapy treatments approved in Canada to fight cancers of the colon and rectum that have spread to other areas of the body include Xeloda® and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).

It was ordinary prescription contact lenses that had the greatest impact on my daughter's life. Allowing her to swap her glasses for contact lenses in her middle teens was possibly one of the best things we have ever done for her. Her whole character changed for the better so when she expressed an interest in color contacts we were more than happy to investigate.

My daughter had to wear glasses from a very early age because she is very long sighted. She also had to wear an opaque patch over one eye for an hour a day for years to correct a 'lazy eye'. The reason for the patch was to encourage the lazy eye to work better. It worked but it took months and months as I remember it. Neither the glasses nor the patch did anything for her confidence and so she spent most of her early years as a quite, self-conscious mouse of a girl. This quiet character persisted into her early teens, long after the eye patch had been dispensed with.

My daughter has been interested in dance since she was very small and I have to say, she is pretty good at it. When it came to performances she never excelled because she would not use her glasses. She wasn't comfortable with wearing them on stage. Unfortunately she couldn't see anything without them and that presented quite a problem for her. What she would have given for a pair of color contacts back then.

We decided to try her out with contact lenses as soon as she was old enough and are we glad we did. She changed literally overnight. She became more confident and outspoken. No longer did she suffer at the hands of the bullies in school because now she had 'attitude'. Her schoolwork improved and so did her dance performances, rather dramatically too. I stood back in awe at the difference those tiny contact lenses had made.

She doesn't use color contact lenses very often but when she does they can make a very dramatic impact on her appearance. She occasionally wears them when she goes out in the evening and wants to make an impression.

My daughter is now studying medicine at university and she is doing very well indeed. I believe that contact lenses are at least partly responsible for this success although sometimes you can catch her using her glasses when studying, probably because it makes her look like a more serious student.

A 2003 study by the Health Sciences Department of the University of South Australia suggests that taking concentrated bovine colostrum supplements could reduce the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections.
The study involved subjects being randomly allocated to consume 60g/day of Colostrum for eight weeks, then examining their occurrence of symptoms. Results from the first week were kept separate from those from the last seven weeks.
The results showed that during the first week of supplementation, there was no measurable difference in symptoms in the proportion of subjects taking the supplement as opposed to those who didn't. During the subsequent seven weeks, however, a much lower percentage of the subjects taking Colostrum reported upper respiratory infection related symptoms.
Symptom duration, however, did not differ. This suggests that the immune benefits achieved by Colostrum can be very good in terms of being a preventative, but that it does not have any measurable effect on an infection once it has already taken hold. What does the fight or flight response do?  First, it sharpens the awareness and confuses the mind.  Of all the effects of stress, this seems the most contradictory.  However, it is also true.  The body pumps in adrenaline, which heightens mental sharpness, and noradrenaline, which causes the mind to be confused.  This is a bad thing because your mind is simultaneously receiving messages to stand up and fight while it receives messages to get the heck away from there.  Thus, the mind is clouded with indecision and this will not help you focus on what you need to get done.
This response to stress also causes the heart to speed up in order to pump more blood.  This rise in blood pressure allows the body to react stronger and more quickly in order to either fight or escape.  Unfortunately, the stress of everyday life is not of the same sort as that of a person out in the wilderness and it tends to stick around longer than the threat of physical attack.  Thus, what should be a short rise in blood pressure is actually dragged out over a long period of time, making the heart work way too hard for long periods.  This causes a rise in blood pressure which can result in increased risk of stroke or heart attack in the long term.
Also, the effects of stress include the body's tendency to break down white blood cells when it is stressed.  Unfortunately, white blood cells are used to fight disease and breaking them down causes immune system depletion and makes people more vulnerable to disease.  Thus, if you do not slow down, your body will be slowed down for you with a cold or a bout of the flu.  This explains why many people tend to become ill when they are under pressure for long periods of time.

You may have heard of the “Portfolio Diet” wherein it has been clinically accepted that increasing the intake of soy based foods can reduce levels of LDL cholesterol as much as some statin drugs.
Well, now it seems that soybeans have another health-giving quality: they also reduce blood pressure.
This latest finding is making quite a bit of noise in medical circles and not without reason. Can you imagine how hard the two largest drug markets (cholesterol and blood pressure) would be hit if the American Heart Association or the American College of Cardiology released a statement saying that soybeans can reduce bad cholesterol and control blood pressure? Just think about it. But that’s where it will stop; in your thoughts. With all the lobbying power of the giant pharmaceutical industry, I seriously doubt that such a statement from an internationally recognized source will ever be released.
However, to date more than 40 clinical trials have clearly shown that soya protein can reduce cholesterol in men and women. The effective dose of soy protein per day appears to range between 25 and 50 grams. Now initial studies show that it is also useful in fighting high blood pressure.
Soybean protein lowers blood pressure
In a report from the Annals of Internal Medicine (July 2005), it seems that use of soybean protein dietary supplements may help reduce high blood pressure.
Soybean products have been commonplace in Asian diets for centuries, and soybeans, as well as its derivative products have long been available in our local health stores and supermarkets. Research has shown that food items like tofu and soymilk can reduce cholesterol levels and lower risks for cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis. If we add the ability to fight high blood pressure to the list of illness and diseases that soy foods are able to combat, then we might just have a super disease killer on our hands.
In the study covered by the Annals, a group of American and Chinese researchers focused on 300 Chinese patients suffering from hypertension. One group was and given 40gms of soy protein while the second group was given wheat-based carbohydrates.
The objective of the trial was to examine the effect of soybean protein supplementation on blood pressure in persons with pre-hypertension or Stage 1 hypertension. The results showed that Soybean protein supplementation resulted in a reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. As such, increased intake of soybean protein may play an important role in preventing and treating hypertension.
The researchers of Tulane University, New Orleans say it's unclear how soybean products might reduce blood pressure. One theory is that soy proteins widen blood vessels while helping the body do a better job of processing blood sugar.
In a related editorial, Dr. Jeffrey A. Cutler and Dr. Eva Obarzanek of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, state that the new study provides "another important link between blood pressure and dietary macronutrient intake," but add that further studies are needed before soybean supplements can be recommended to patients with high blood pressure.
Soybeans, soymilk, tofu, bean sprouts, meat substitutes, cookies and even soy-based ice cream are all commonly available. Maybe it is better that you don’t wait for the big medical institutions to start singing praises about soybeans. Take A Hot Soak
Hot water works by defeating the stress response. When we're tense and anxious, blood flow to our extremities is reduced. Hot water restores circulation, convincing the body it's safe and that it's ok to relax. Cold water must not be used because it has the opposite effect, and will increase tension.
An office alternative might be running hot water over your hands until you feel the tension starting to drain away.
Excercise.
Regular exercise will burn off some of the stress chemicals tension produces, and exercise will  tire your musles - a tired muscle is a relaxed muscle.
Listen To Music
Music soothes as perhaps nothing else does. You can use it in two basic ways - to relax or to inspire. New - Age music is very relaxing.

Significant signs of improvement were seen from patients taking medication 6 weeks earlier than those who were undergoing cognitive behavior therapy alone, but were about twice as likely to report feeling suddenly suicidal. This study showed that antidepressants lowered the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions over all, but significantly less so than talk therapy.  According to Kevin Stark, a psychologist at the University of Texas who was not involved with the research, the study convincingly showed for the first time that there are very good options for a child who is going through depression and thought to be at risk for suicidal thinking.  “Psychosocial therapies do work on their own, with time. But they also help prevent relapse, and this shows that they can help make drug treatment safer,” said Stark.
Experts agreed that talk therapy was a safer alternative. Almost 15 percent of the patients taking just antidepressant medication reported what were described as “suicidal events,” mainly talk and thoughts of suicide so alarming that doctors called in the patients and, often, altered dosages.
The rate of such events for those receiving just cognitive behavior therapy was 6 percent. The results for combination therapy were about the same.
Dr. John March, Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Duke University Medical Center and the principal investigator for the study believed that medication accelerates recovery while cognitive therapy protects against these bad reactions.  “The combination of both treatments is the best option,” said Dr. March.
Getting patients out of bed and doing something that they enjoy, like playing basketball or going to a party, are just some of the behavioral changes promoted by talk therapy.  The young patients are also taught to diffuse “poisonous assumptions” like “I’m a loser” or “I’ll never get a girlfriend.”
It may not be easy to find specialists for this therapy outside large cities. However, the techniques have been widely published in various manuals and books which can serve as sources and references for a good therapist to work on a depression treatment plan.
