Best Ways To Burn Fat

The best ways to burn fat will be different for each unique individual, as we all have different metabolisms, and different physical characteristics. Nevertheless, there are some common principles which can be applied to anyone, and it these that we shall concentrate on here. The methods given here are tested over time, and among the best ways to burn fat.

Method 1
The most obvious form of exercise you can perform is still one of the best ways to burn fat, and that is simple running. This running can be done indoors on a treadmill, but you will probably burn more calories by getting outside. If you do your running in the countryside, across country and often on hilly terrain, you will be working your body hard, and in a healthy environment.

Method 2
There is no doubt that skipping is one of the best ways to burn fat, if not the best. Successive generations of boxers have incorporated skipping into their daily schedule, and these are people who can afford to be at anything below peak fitness. If you practice skipping for twenty minutes, you will probably find it the hardest 20 minutes of your training career!

Method 3
One of the best ways to burn fat is to know what you are setting out to do All physical exercise takes effort and determination, and you are far more likely to succeed if you can know what you have to do to reach your target. On average you need to burn 3500 calories to lose a pound of fat. There is also a formula which says if you multiply your weight in pounds by 13, you will find out the number of calories it will take for you to stay at your current weight. If you play around with the numbers a little, you can get an idea of how many calories you need to be taking in each day to lose the fat you want to lose. From these formulae, you can work out a reasonable plan for burning fat and losing weight.

Method 4
The best ways to burn fat will always be ways you are likely to stick with, so if you are keen on intense sport, take advantage of this. Even if you only perform the activity in short bursts, you will still be burning calories. There is a lot of running and exertion involved in virtually any sport, and most have practice drills which you can perform alone. Doing something which gives you a challenge, and which you find satisfying, will give you the drive to push through the bad times and carry on.

These four methods are the best ways to burn fat.

If you want to stay fit and healthy, you should keep an eye on your cholesterol intake. There are natural ways of lowering cholesterol if it is out of control. The first natural way is by taking your diet seriously. There are also dietary supplements that will help you lower your cholesterol. For diets high in saturated fats, eating more fiber rich foods may help decrease your cholesterol level.

This is a great place to start in getting your body healthy and in shape. The natural ways of lowering cholesterol are easy to maintain as long as you are patient and willing to follow a few rules.

Eat more vegetables and vegetable oils. Increase your intake of plant sterols in your body through yogurts, fortified margarines, salad dressings, cream cheese. This will also increase your phytostanols. Plant sterols are also available in supplement form. Although not hard to find, they can be a little pricey, but ultimately an easy, effective, and convenient natural way to lower cholesterol.

Lestrin is also a plant sterol available in supplements which is made available in pharmacies, stores, independent chemists and health food stores. People have claimed that garlic and nuts have no effect in lowering cholesterol, but there is also a percentage that proves they help reduce cholesterol in our body.

Low in saturated fats, nuts, especially walnuts are particularly helpful for reducing cholesterol more than expected. This may be a high-fat food, but it is rich in monosaturated and polyunsaturated fat. Scientists have shown that these supplements contain plant proteins which affect cholesterol levels.

Omega 3 fatty acids help lower your cholesterol easily. Fish oil supplements are suitable and effective to increase the good cholesterol especially stable fish oil. This does a better job than the ordinary fish oil we find in the market.

Red yeast rice is known to be the most effective way to fight LDL. This is considered the best dietary agent of it all. Red yeast rice is available in the form of cholestin which is a dietary supplement. In recent studies, it has been proven that cholestin has lowered cholesterol effectively as statins. This is so because cholestin contains an amount of natural statin which helps prevent the increase in cholesterol.

Fresh fish is the best delicacy for the summer season and the best thing is that it can help in lowering cholesterol magnificently.

If you are suffering from high cholesterol, you should first consult your primary care physician before making any changes in your diet.

Best Ways to Shop for Cheap Medicine Online

Word Count:

Summary:
To avoid becoming victims of hoax or rogue online pharmacies, consumers should be careful in choosing which websites to order or purchase medications from. In line with this, the author of this article provides a list of the best ways to shop for cheap medicine online.

Keywords:
cheap medicine online (cheap meds online)

Article Body:
Are you among the millions of individuals who are far too busy to go out and purchase prescription medications at local drugstores? If you are, then online pharmacies are the top option for you to get your prescription refilled.

As you search the Internet for online pharmacies, you will get a comprehensive list of Internet drugstores that distribute medications or drugs to millions of consumers everyday. These websites are basically developed to  make medication distribution easier and faster. Apart from the convenience that online pharmacies provide, these sites are also the perfect places to look for cheap yet quality brands of prescription drugs or medications.

However, there are also some issues involved in purchasing or ordering medications via the Internet. Despite the benefits one can get from these service sites, there are safety and security issues that consumers should know before they try to avail of the services that these websites offer.

According to recent statistics, almost half of the total number of online pharmacies established on the Internet today are not licensed or registered to dispense medications or drugs to consumers. With this, thousands of people worldwide are becoming victims of fraudulent online pharmacies, for they have unfortunately chosen to order or purchase their prescription medications from rogue Internet drugstores.

To avoid acquiring health complications and experiencing financial issues, online consumers should definitely become wary and choosy in deciding which sites to trust. First-timers at utilizing the featured services of Internet pharmacies are usually the victims of the hoax websites that proliferate the world wide web.

Below are the best ways to shop for cheap medicine online:

   1. Make sure that the online pharmacy posts a complete address and telephone number.

If a particular website does not have a mailing address and an existing telephone number, it is best not to consider that website anymore, for there is a big chance that it is a hoax or a fake website. If ever problems occur, consumers will surely find it difficult to contact the sites that they purchase medications from if there are no contact details to rely on.

   2. Make sure that the online pharmacy requires prescriptions from consumers.

One of the best ways to detect if a website is operating illegally is if it does not require prescriptions from the clients. These sites only ask consumers to fill up or answer questionnaires that will serve as basis for their recommended medications. This method is considered illegal as a questionnaire cannot replace a prescription when it comes to dispensing medications as treatments to health conditions.

   3. Make sure that the online pharmacy has authorization to operate or is approved by concerned international groups that regulate online pharmaceutical services.

In order to get the most out of buying cheap medicine online, consumers should only choose Internet pharmacies that are authorized or approved by concerned international groups or programs that are meant to regulate the service and the establishment of online pharmacies. There are also websites that contain a list of the registered or authorized online pharmacies that can be used as references by consumers.

article:

Beta Glucan is an extremely potent, immune activating substance taken from the cellular walls of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast). The extraction is so pure that consumption of Beta-Glucan is harmless, unlike consuming large amounts of yeast. So, even if you have yeast related problems, including overgrowths and infections, Beta-Glucan is a perfectly safe immune supplement to take.
In the late 1980s, Dr. Joyce Czop of Harvard University describes how cells known as macrophage, which are the front line defense of the immune system, contain a special receptor for yeast in Beta-Glucan. In addition to recognizing and eliminating tumor cells throughout the body, macrophage cells also produce several essential cytokines that help to fortify the immune system's natural defences against infections and viruses. The more activated macrophage cells there are in the body, the better the immune response, thus the medical community has a great ongoing interest in Beta Glucan.
According to an article by Donald J. Carrow, M.D., in a 1996 Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, "There is now evidence to show that Beta-Glucan is, from an evolutionary point of view, the most widely and most commonly observed macrophage activator in nature."
Dr. Carrow has said that Beta-Glucan is an excellent supplementation option for people who have impaired immunity from any cause, including chronic fatigue, recurring stress, fibromyalgia, persistent viruses, or even environmental pollutants. Beta-Glucan is generally accepted as safe, has no known toxicity or side effects, and was approved by the FDA in 1998.
In addition to its immune boosting qualities, Beta Glucan has been shown to lower cholesterol by as much as 20%. If you are looking for a long-term health-enhancing supplement, Beta Glucan definitely has the potential to be an excellent choice.

In a 2002 study, a group of researchers used oral Beta Glucan to treat mice infected with Bacillus Anthracites. With the high incidence of anthrax vaccine complications, an alternative preventative approach is sorely needed to deal with this frightening disease. Non specific immune stimulation methods, such as macrophage activation would be an excellent option.
The way that anthrax works is by secreting two toxins: edema toxin and lethal toxin. The first of these stimulates an outpouring of fluid into the lungs, while the latter inhibits nuetrophil phagocytosis and triggers destructive intracellular reactions, destroying macrophage cells. This is especially threatening because of the fact that the lethal toxin prevents the macrophages from releasing their immune messengers, including TNF-alpha.
The study in question showed that orally administered Beta Glucan greatly stimulates the levels of TNF-alph released from the macrophage, which overcomes the inhibition caused by the anthrax lethal toxin. Because of this, the mice that were treated with Beta Glucan experienced a significantly higher survival rate.
Beta Glucan was also shown to stimulate the effectiveness of neutrophils. In fact, one study indicated that the efficiency of neutrophils was increased as much as 50-fold by this powerful supplement, allowing for much faster and more precise immune reactions.

Better Chances for Recovery

Summary:
What are the ways to get a better chance on recovery from depression? Do we simply rely on the best medical practitioners around or do we rely on the medication itself?

Keywords:
buy Prozac, buy Prozac online, prozac

Article Body:
Doctors, during their years of studying and practice, are taught almost everything they need to know about their field. However, no matter how expert medical practitioners may be, they still cannot make certain the future outcomes of their treatments. The highest that they can do is make predictions of the possible developments of their patients' conditions. They make a prognosis of their patient's case based on positive and negative factors. A prognosis is an estimation of the extent of development that a patient will achieve.

Take for example the case of people with depression. They are usually prescribed with medications like Prozac, Fluoxetine, or Effexor. However, medications are usually not enough for a long-term, successful recovery of patients with this condition. Usually, doctors advice their patients to undergo psychotherapy sessions to support the positive effects of the medication and further improve the patient's condition for a long-term basis.

Some individuals believe that medications and psychotherapy should be taken or undergone separately. This means that treatments for depression are either-or situations. This particular belief may simply stem from reasons such as financial limitations or personal preferences. However, most medical professionals will suggest that a combined treatment of medications and therapy will result to more stable and long-term outcomes. When a doctor's suggestion and a patient's financial situation or personal opinion does not agree, this usually poses a limitation on the patient's condition. This is not to say that doctors are always right about their suggestions, which is why it is also usually necessary to obtain secondary opinions from other medical experts. However, most suggestions made by physicians are based on their evaluation of how their patient's conditions can be best improved or treated. They usually set goals for their patients which, by the way, should always be discussed, planned, and set with the consent of the patient himself/herself.

One possible reason why doctors prefer simultaneous treatment administration of medications and psychotherapy is because medications alone, when used as treatment for depression, have a high tendency of relapse or recurrence of depression upon its termination. Some studies indicate that regression of previously treated patients back to their depressed situations are prevented and their chances of relapsing are lessened when they undergo psychotherapy sessions together with or after their use of anti-depressant medications. Also, the risk of committing suicides among the population suffering from depression is managed better by psychotherapy. Lastly, through undergoing therapy sessions, individuals with depression learn how to deal with stress, disappointments, loss, and other psychosocial issues that usually trigger or worsen their condition.

Thus, even if doctors cannot assure a patient's full and successful recovery after treatment, they are still able to plan out certain treatment strategies to increase the patient's chances of achieving this goal. Sometimes, medications like Prozac in the case of individuals with depression may not suffice alone. Supporting treatment approaches and strategies are, therefore, incorporated in the plan to make the patient's prognosis better. The only disadvantages in this situation are the patient's financial limitations as well as some of their personal preferences.

Rejuvinol Product Purported to have Great Anti-wrinkle Promise.
Women since time immemorial have always looked for ways to enhance and prolong their beauty.  This of course becomes more difficult as they age.   As women are living longer more productive lives, it is understandable that they want any advantage to put their best face forward.
Exuding confidence and success for today's women seems to also include looking one's best .  This interest in radiating ageless beauty has given birth to a burgeoning beauty industry focusing on ways to ease the effects of aging skin.
But at what cost is the yearning for the timeless beauty? I once heard my mother tell us "that achieving beauty was painful."  But are today's women enduring a range of procedures like plastic surgery, chemical peels, and Botox far beyond the bounds of their predecessors?
Botox has become all the rage because of its ability to smooth out some wrinkles.  Nevertheless, Botox has recently come under question because of concerns about its toxicity.  Furthermore, many women don't want to undertake the injections necessary in Botox treatments.
Moreover, havoc and health problems are being widely reported in the media recently in association with Botox. A get deal of concern is focused on Botox treatments in the hands of unqualified, unscrupulous, and misleading professionals.
"New Topical Treatment with Anti-wrinkle Benefits Emerges without the Controversial Side Effects of Botox Treatments"
Is there a safer way to have a more youthful facial appearance without risky face lift surgery, chemical peels or Botox Injections?  Some women are sharing their success and positive experiences with a topical treatment featuring high quality anti-aging ingredients known as Rejuvinol.
What is Rejuvinol?
Rejuvinol is an anti-wrinkle cream with premium products developed by a company known as Optimal Therapeutics.  The ingredients of Rejuvinol are widely purported to have significant wrinkle smoothing and anti-aging effects.  From reports that I have read Rejuvinol utilizes a morning and evening treatment to insure optimal results.
For instance many leading doctors open to natural herbal supplements suggest that products like green tea, ginseng derivatives and sun screens may be very beneficial with anti-aging properties.  Upon checking the ingredients of Rejuvinol I noticed these products were present.
Perhaps even more significant is the widely noted active ingredient in Rejuvinol known as Argireline.  Argireline is reported as having properties resistant to the process of skin wrinkling -- especially on the face.
Is Rejuvinol the Answer for Safe Anti-wrinkle Facial Smoothing?
For some like Andrea M. a 37 year old triathelete, living in South Florida, Rejuvinol is a welcome alternative to Botox. She claims "Even though I religiously slather myself with SPF 30 prior to heading outdoors, I still manage to get obvious sun damage, especially the lines around my mouth and eyes. Since I started using the Rejuvinol System three months ago I am astonished to say that the lines have been diminished by at least 60%. I am ecstatic with Rejuvinol."
With all the controversy, costs, safety issues, and anxiety associated with cosmetic surgery, skin peels, or Botox a product like Rejuvinol is an alternative women should consider.  Imagine women being able to get the wrinkle smoothing benefits of Botox without all the associated risks.  More information on Rejuvinol can be found at Amazon or www.BODeStore.com.

title:Bet You Didn’t Know . . . All Waters Are Not Created Equal

Water fortifies our systems and our cells. Without it, we couldn't survive. And it has been linked to many health benefits, from removing toxins from the system to improving brain function. Those 8 to 12 glasses of water a day are certainly critical . . . but if the water we drink isn't "clean," we're not doing our bodies much good.
Contaminants, from chlorine to aluminum, in our tap water supply have caused many consumers to abandon their taps for bottled water. But bottled waters have their own hazards. The acidic pH in many plastic bottled waters causes the plastic to leach into the water, particularly if the bottles have been sitting in a warehouse for a long time.
It's important to drink waters that have a pH of 7.0 and higher, and preferably housed in glass bottles or safer plastics such as PET or PETE. Here are some excellent spring and artesian water choices: Mountain Valley Spring Water, VOSS Artesian Water, Fiji Natural Artesian Spring Water, Trinity Spring Water.
If you continue to use tap water as your primary water source, consider investing in a home water filtering unit such as The Wellness Filter www.wellnessfilter.com  or The Ionizer Plus hightechhealth.com. At the very least, invest in a carbon pitcher filter system such as Brita or PUR, which filter out many impurities.
Also, be careful of distilled water. Although some people will use distilled water as a detoxifier when they are fasting, it should be kept to a minimum. Distilled water has no mineral or nutritional content and long-term use can cause a rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium and chloride).
Super Health Hydration Tip: Most other fluids don't "count" towards your water goal. Soft drinks, coffee, alcohol . . . these diuretics are dehydrators that actually deplete the body of essential minerals and vitamins and compromise the gains you get from drinking clean water. Your 8 to 12 glasses should be "net" glasses of water per day.

Beware of False Positives and Fake Generics

Word Count:

Summary:
Internet technology and the idea of the placebo are now being used to form a dangerous scam involving selling fake medication over the Internet. The global economy being what it is, most people would rather take cheap generic drugs when possible, which is easy to find over the Internet. What they don't realize is that not all Internet-based pharmacies are selling legitimate drugs.

Keywords:
cheap generic drugs

Article Body:
Economics plays a central role in shaping people’s views, preferences, choices, and decisions. It can even be said that the concepts of trade and money has already taken root in the collective human psyche. Even something as precious and critical as a person's health often has to bend against the whirlwind of economic concerns. For a vast majority of the population, the existence of cheap generic drugs as substitutes for their more expensive branded counterparts saves both their health and their pockets. The fact that the generic and branded variants differ only in name has made a number of people more willing to go for cheap generic drugs. However, consumers should be aware that low prices can sometimes be a sign of a well-designed scam. Recently, there has been a small wave of cheap generic drugs being sold on the Internet that are nothing more than elaborately packaged sugar pills.

It is true that genuine generics are the same as their branded counterparts. When it comes down to it, both of them work using the same active ingredient and treat the same problems. However, the problem lies in the possibility of getting fake drugs delivered to your doorstep. The medical community has been using placebos for a long time now, usually for research or testing purposes, but also to placate the many medical woes of the occasional hypochondriac. Yet, when cheap generic drugs are actually little more than sugar pills, that invites more trouble than most people would believe. Unfortunately, these situations have become more common than the average consumer should be comfortable with. What's worse is that this particular scam is slowly starting to spread.

Just recently, French authorities seized a shipment of fake, generic anti-impotence pills. The shipment was noted by captured smugglers to be a small one, yet it had an estimated total of 224,000 pills. These drugs often make their way into a person's medicine cabinet by being sold over the Internet, where it is exceedingly easy to sell stuff like this and manage to get away clean as a whistle. Prior to that, Spanish authorities reportedly busted an illegal syndicate that was selling tampered birth control medication. There have been many more incidents of this variety, which don't even take into account the cheap, but theoretically less effective, drugs that are being exported en masse by a number of Chinese pharmaceutical companies.

While there have been no reports of these fake medications being purchased from a real pharmacy or drug store, they are known to be prevalent over the Internet. There are ways to tell if an online pharmacy is legitimate, such as looking for signs or seals that note verification from trusted business authorities. Another sign that a pharmacy is legitimate would be the contact information. By all rights, a legitimate company is required by most countries to put up a mailing address, an e-mail address, and a contact number for their customers. The presence of such information is no guarantee that a website is legitimate, but it can help in verifying a site's authenticity. The rule of thumb is that if you can't contact anyone via the phone line, or if you get through a little too easily, then the website is most likely a scam.

When it comes to health, fitness and working out, you and I carry many misbeliefs, as you'll quickly realize when you hear this story.
I was down in Tampa recently visiting my good friend Matt when he told me this story about a misunderstanding he had with his three year old son, Frank.
Matt and his wife were getting ready to go visit his parents, and to make things just a little easier on themselves, they decided to stop at Wendy's for dinner on the way.
They ordered chicken nuggets for Frank.
As it turned out, Frank really liked 'em.
A few weeks later, they had gone out to eat dinner at a family restaurant. When asked what he wanted for dinner, Frank said "chicken nuggets".
But once the waitress brought their dinner to the table, Frank felt that something was amiss.
He immediately announced that what the waitress brought him was indeed NOT chicken nuggets.
Of course Matt knew better, but the more he tried to convince his son Frank that the meal on his plate was indeed chicken nuggets, the more Frank resisted.
You see, since Frank already had chicken nuggets in the past, he had already formed an opinion as to what chicken nuggets were, and now that his opinion was being challenged, he was resisting.
And to be honest, it's really no different with us!
Even as adults, we have this mistaken philosophy that the first thing we learn about a subject is right, and anything we hear thereafter must be false.
But nothing could be further from the truth.
Let me give you a personal example.
I'm about ready to turn 39.
When I was in high school, back in the early 80's, I distinctly remember my teachers telling me that the way to be successful in life was to go to college, study hard and get a good education. That way I'd be able to get a great job that would last me the rest of my life.
My teachers had no reason to lie to me, so I believed them.
But over the course of the last 20+ years, I've found this advice to be totally wrong.
In fact, I've lost track of the amount of jobs I had.
You can probably relate.
How many jobs have you worked in during the course of your life?
In case you haven't noticed, things have changed. In this day and age, I venture to say that none of us will work for one company our entire life.
What used to be true years ago is simply no longer true today!
While my teachers may have meant well, the advice they gave me was incorrect. And the sad thing is, many people still swear by this advice to this day.
I tell you this to make a very important point:
Like the story of Frank, and what my teachers told me years ago, much of what you've heard or been told about health and fitness is also incorrect.
But it doesn't have to be that way any longer!

Deaths related to smoking are due mainly to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), heart disease, and cancers. Smoking-related illnesses kill about half of all smokers.  In most cases, those who started smoking early also make it a life-long habit.  These early smokers are also those who are most prone to smoking-related diseases.

Even if the ill-effects of cigarette use are widely known, why do many people still continue smoke? Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal.

People start smoking for a variety of different reasons. Some smoke because they think that it is the    “cool” thing to do.  Others get started on smoking because their family members or friends also smoke. Statistics show that 9 out of 10 tobacco users started smoking even before they reached 18 years old.  Most adults who started smoking in their teens never expected to become addicted. That's why people say it's just so much easier to not start smoking at all.

Many of us breathe smoke whether we like it or not. We usually inhale smoke in public places, around doorways of buildings, and at work. When someone smokes inside a home or car, everyone inside breathes second-hand smoke. When a person smokes near you, you breathe in second-hand smoke. Second hand smoke is produced when a cigarette burns. It is made up of two components. One is mainstream smoke, which is what a smoker inhales and exhales. The other is called sidestream smoke and comes from the end of a burning cigarette, cigar, or pipe.

Cigarettes produce about 12 minutes of smoke, yet the smoker may inhale only 30 seconds of smoke from their cigarette. The rest of the smoke lingers in the air for non-smokers and smokers to breathe. Second-hand smoke contains more than 4000 chemicals. Many of these chemicals are known to cause cancer.

Moreover, second-hand smoke causes sore eyes, throat and nasal irritation, headaches, coughing and wheezing, nausea, and dizziness. One can also get colds and the flu. Breathing in second-hand smoke can also trigger asthma attacks and increase your chances of getting bronchitis and pneumonia. The longer you're exposed to second-hand smoke, the more it will affect your health.

The only thing that really helps a person avoid the problems associated with smoking and second-hand smoke is staying smoke-free. Limiting your exposure to secondhand smoke may seem easy, but sometimes it is not, especially if everyone around you is smoking and offering you cigarettes. One can keep his or her home and car smoke free by smoking outside. However, remember that smoke can linger for up to two and half-hours, so opening a window or leaving the room doesn't really count.
Even the slightest exposure to second-hand smoke is dangerous.  A piece of advice for smokers:  it is never too late to quit your unhealthy habit.  By quitting smoking, you can help save other people's lives, including your own.

article:

The food pyramid was issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the early 1990s as part of a program to encourage the growth of healthy eating habits from a young age. From the outset schools that were keen to introduce healthy eating habits from junior school level upwards embraced it. We all accepted that USDA had produced a new key to guide us in how to eat healthily and start the battle against obesity from a young age. Time has since taught us that the Food Pyramid was based upon some unsound scientific data and the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health has since corrected the base knowledge by using up to date scientific data that has now replaced the original Pyramid. On a personal note I think the original Food Pyramid was great and a definite step in the right direction. This new approach is based upon more accurate scientific data and is therefore better to use.
The Five Food Groups
Fruits: Eat a variety of fruits rather than fruit juices for most of your fruit needs. Apart from fresh fruit you can also use canned fruit, dried fruit or frozen fruit. But try to have at least one item of fresh fruit each day.
Vegetables: Dark green vegetables are especially good for you; spinach, broccoli and kale lead the way together with any other dark leaf greens. Orange vegetables should also form a major part of your diet: Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and winter squash. Don't forget beans and peas such as kidney beans, pinto beans, black beans, split peas and lentils.
Calcium foods: You need at least three cups of fat free or low fat milk each day. You can substitute an equal amount of low-fat yoghurts or cheese. One and a half ounces (42.5 grams) of cheese equals a cup of milk.
Grains: Minimum three ounces (85 grams) of whole-grain cereal. This can be substituted by pasta or rice. 1/2 cup of pasta or rice equals 1 cup of whole-grain breakfast cereal. Harvard School of Public Health suggests that you should read the content labels to be sure that grains such as wheat, rice, oats and corn are referred to as "whole".
Proteins: Choose only lean meats and poultry and it is preferable to bake, broil or grill it. You can vary your protein intake with fish, beans, peas, nuts and seeds.
A healthy diet requires a daily intake from each of the five food groups listed above. It also requires that you eat in moderation and should never eat until you feel full. It takes around twenty minutes for your stomach to get the full message to your brain. It is this time lapse that is to blame for the majority of cases of obesity. Today many of the top dieticians are advocating that you eat more meals each day rather than less. For instance, if you eat six small meals each day with a controlled calorie intake you are less likely to eat too much at any meal. This is far more helpful to losing weight than taking 3 meals each day and being so hungry when you sit down that you eat until the brain gets the message that you are full because that is already too late and the damage will takes months to undo.

article:

Now that it's summer, it's almost impossible to avoid the ever-popular summer BBQ. Some of our favorite meals are cooked over charcoal, but we still need to be aware that many of the traditional 'summer' foods are packed with fat and calories!
Isn't it ironic that some of the 'fattest' foods make their debut in the summer when we're all trying to fit into that bathing suit?
So which traditional summer foods will break the belt?
HOT DOGS. Although they're small, the typical hot dog contains about 30% of your daily saturated fat intake! At about 180 calories each, hot dogs may seem quite harmless until we realize that 140 of those calories are from FAT. Don't forget that the average hot dog bun has 110 calories, which boosts the total to 250 calories per hot dog.
HAMBURGERS. Ground beef comes in all sorts of varieties, from 'full-fat' to 'low-fat'. You'll pay more for the low-fat version, but it's worth it. The average hamburger has about 275 calories and 12 grams of fat (includes the bun). That's slightly less fat than the hot dog, but more calories. "The secret to keeping the burger lean is to avoid the high fat toppings such as mayonnaise, bacon, cheese or sauces and instead, garnish simply with ketchup, mustard, tomatoes, onions and relishes" (Source: Ontario Cattlemen's Association). Pile on the high-calories toppings and you'll boost the calorie count to 800 or even higher!!
POTATO CHIPS. A summer BBQ just wouldn't be a BBQ without the chips! But while we're enjoying the crunch, we're putting on the pounds. Many brands of potato chips contain about 150 calories per serving. Doesn't sound like much? Consider that what they call a 'serving' is really one ounce.....11 chips. Here's another way to look at it: each SINGLE potato chip provides a bit more than 1% of your daily recommended fat intake!
So what's a summer-BBQ-lovin' person to do? Relax! There's no need to avoid the fun this summer! By just making a few creative adjustments to the menu, we can enjoy the family picnic while keeping our diet under control.
Try fruits, veggies and baked beans instead of chips. We all know the health benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables, so focus on those instead of full-fat potato chips. High in fiber and low in calories, these choices will help us feel full without putting on the pounds.
Try a ground turkey patty instead of a hamburger. It will save you more than 100 calories, and it's really not bad tasting! Be sure to look for SKINLESS ground turkey, which has far fewer calores than just 'ground turkey'.
Consider putting some boneless, skinless chicken breasts on the BBQ instead of beef. Lower in calories and fat, chicken breasts are a good choice for any event.
Don't forget about fish! The choices are almost endless, and the health benefits are overwhelming. Put some salmon on the BBQ and enjoy! "We recommend eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least two times a week. Fish is a good source of protein and doesn’t have the high saturated fat that fatty meat products do" (Source: www.americanheart.org).
Finally, watch the drinks. High-calorie beverages like lemonade and Kool-Aid boast between 60 and 100 calories per glass, and sometimes even more. A single can of soda usually contains about 160 calories. Choose low-calorie drinks like iced tea (unsweetened) or just plain old water.
With just a little effort, the summer BBQ doesn't have to add inches or pounds! Choose healthy, low-fat and low-calorie foods instead of the traditional fare and keep those pounds off!

Bextra was created in the late 1990s by the G.D Searle & Co. division of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals for the handling of arthritis, inflammation, and painful menstrual cramping without the risk of severe stomach irritation. Clinical tests of arthritis patients over six months showed the relative safety of Bextra, and it was approved by the FDA on November 16, 2001. Bextra became one of the best selling drugs on the market, with sales in the tens of billions of dollars. Doctors were happy with the low percentage of stomach irritation, and patients were pleased with the boost in quality of life that these alleged “wonder drugs” provided.
Then on October 15, 2004, the FDA warned of harmful complications in patients who took Bextra directly after having heart surgery. Later, in November of that year, the American Heart Association released the results of its own clinical test, showing that Bextra had heightened the risk of heart attack and strokes.  A prominent FDA reviewer proclaimed that Bextra was one of five different drugs listed as  “unsafe” to prescribe.
After careful studies of the risk of not only heart attack and strokes,  but also the frequency of potentially fatal allergic skin reactions, the FDA re-evaluated the drug and on April 7, 2005, they asked Pfizer to remove Bextra from American and European markets. Widespread prescriptions of Bextra had already caused significant damage, and may victims of the drug’s side effects continue to suffer from the terrible consequences.
If you are one of the millions who took Bextra, contact your doctor immediately. The side effects of the medication may take some time to appear and the earlier that treatment is given, the better the outcome for the patient. If you feel that you've been a victim of these types of side effects, contact an experienced Bextra lawyer who can help you fight for what you deserve!

Bextra, also known as valdecoxib, is a prescription medicine known as a COX-2 Inhibitor. Like Vioxx and Celebrex, it supposedly lessen the pain of inflammation and fever without causing stomach irritation common to aspirin and other NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). Pharmaceutical corporation Pfizer released Bextra in 2001, and prescription sales soon rose to 3.2 billion dollars.
Bextra is used to take care of an assortment of different conditions, including arthritis, menstrual cramps, and other types of chronic inflammation or low level pain. Pfizer discovered in 2002 that Bextra offered an elevated risk of serious skin irritation during the beginning stages of treatment. Also, during a complicated heart procedure called coronary artery bypass graft, certain  patients who had also taken Bextra developed serious heart problems. Bextra also created a heightened risk of Steven-Johnsons’s Syndrome, a potentially fatal skin condition resulting in infection and inflammation, and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, which creates infected skin to flake off and die. In addition, it was originally  believed that Bextra, like its sister drug Celebrex, might pose the same heightened risk of stroke and heart attack, and the FDA ordered more examinations to investigate this possibility. Later, in April 2005, the FDA asked Pfizer to remove Bextra from the market because the side effects proved too dangerous for public consumption.

(NC)—Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder that affects three to seven per cent of children. The disorder causes difficulties concentrating, sitting still, controlling emotions and listening. ADHD is one of the best-researched psychological disorders and the overall data on its validity are far more compelling than for most mental disorders. It is officially recognized by the World Health Organization.
Children with ADHD are not problem children, but children who have difficulty functioning. These difficulties can be addressed. These children often have special characteristics, such as being energetic, adventurous, intelligent, having a great sense of humor and the ability to throw themselves into their goals. Unfortunately, these characteristics sometimes go unnoted strictly because the difficulties caused by ADHD always seem to be front and centre.
The tendency of children with ADHD to be disorganized, forgetful and easily distracted sometimes makes it hard for their true colours to shine, but the potential is there and often just needs a helping hand.
Physicians, parents and educators routinely offer guidance by teaching children with ADHD that the disorder is a challenge, not an excuse. With the help of medication, which can correct the underlying chemical imbalance, along with appropriate counseling, they have a fair chance of reaching their full potential.
All medications currently approved to treat ADHD belong to a class called stimulants. A number of new investigational ADHD treatments offer great promise and in the future Canadians will have more choice in ADHD treatment.
Research has shown that up to 60 per cent of children continue to have symptoms into adulthood and this can cause career difficulties due to disorganization and attention deficiencies, but those who adapt to their condition as children can thrive personally and professionally.

title:Beyond Macronutrients and the Importance of Vitamin Supplements

source_url:http://www.articlecity.com/articles/health/article_1231.shtml

article:

Most healthy eaters are familiar with the three macronutrients that garner the most media attention within the diet world: proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.  Indeed, some highly regarded eating programs, such as the Isometric Diet®, are designed to deliver an optimal balance of these three macronutrients.
Yet what is often overlooked in a nutrition vocabulary dominated by talk of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, is the plain fact that vitamin supplements play a critical role in an overall healthy eating program.  It is a neglect that, ironically, derives from scientific misunderstanding.
Until recently, the scientific community firmly maintained that vitamin supplements were unnecessary and potentially even dangerous.  This claim was based on a position that the body’s vitamin needs could be met through diet, and that vitamin supplements are largely created from synthetic, low quality ingredients.
However, evidence to the contrary has emerged; or to put things more accurately, the scientific community is finally accepting a new view.  Clinical studies clearly show that high quality vitamin supplements can be produced from all natural sources, and that taking them can prevent serious health ailments such as heart disease, osteoporosis, and even cancer [i].
It has also been accepted that vitamin supplements help the body effectively regulate how energy is utilized.  In this sense, they ensure that the energy delivered by macronutrients – in the form of calories – is directed properly to promote growth and development [ii].
However, despite the scientifically proven importance of vitamin supplements, some key concerns have been raised.  Specifically, the nutrition community has raised questions with respect to the potential toxicity of supplements that contain “fat-soluble” vitamins.  Fat-soluble vitamins are not easily and swiftly eliminated by the body.  Instead, they are stored in organs and tissues.  Over time, there can be a build-up of fat-soluble vitamins [iii], which can lead to adverse health effects such as nausea, diarrhea, unhealthy weight loss, bone density loss, and digestive tract disorders [iv].
Fortunately, to avoid this potential damage, there are vitamin and nutritional supplement products on the market that offer water-soluble vitamins.  Water-soluble vitamins travel smoothly through the body and the excess is excreted through the kidneys.  As such, there is little to no risk of toxic build up [v].
At the same time, these water-soluble vitamin and nutritional supplements can be derived from all-natural sources.  This is important to note, because, synthetic vitamins can only replicate a fraction of the beneficial nutrients found in natural sources.  As such, the holistic positive impact that can only come from several nutrients working together cannot be reproduced synthetically [vi].
These scientific acknowledgements of the value of vitamin supplements -- and the accessibility of water-soluble, all-natural products -- bode well for the average consumer, and especially well for dieters.
Some diets irresponsibly advise dieters to take diuretic pills that create weight loss through water loss.  As a consequence to this short-term strategy, dieters often become dangerously deficient in water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin C, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, Biotin, and Folic Acid.
However, some well-designed nutritional supplements provide anywhere from 50% to 100% of these essential vitamins.  As such, dieters who are currently subscribing to an unhealthy water-loss diet can responsibly transition to these products, and replenish their depleted water-soluble vitamin stock.
Similarly, dieters who are fortunate enough to have avoided these potentially dangerous diet pill/diuretic diets can wisely integrate these nutritional supplements into their current eating regimen.
Indeed, the scientific community, for all of the contributions it has made to diet and nutrition, has been unusually slow in accepting the fact that vitamin supplements are an essential part of healthy eating.  Yet the consensus of this fact is now fairly widespread, as is the understanding that water-soluble and all-natural products simply outclass fat-soluble and synthetic products in terms of safety and efficacy.
It may have taken a decade or so too long to reach this “vitamin awareness”, but now that it is here, it is reason for both dieters and non-dieters to celebrate a future of healthier and smarter eating.

Beyond Vanity: Skin Care is Imperative to Health and Wellness

Word Count:
613

Summary:
Economy and a busy lifestyle play a great deal on why people would refrain from availing those skincare services being offered in the media. However, there is more to skincare than just a case of vanity. The skin serves as the body's first barrier against bacterial infections.

Keywords:
skincare

Article Body:
While feminists and critics sneer at beauty for being only “skin deep”, the continuous growth of the cosmetics industry proves that an increasing number of people are really taking effort, time, and money to invest on various beauty regimen and skincare. Nowadays, women are not the only ones who get conscious of their looks, but even some men, particularly the younger generation, have become advocates of pampering skincare.
Some people, however, are too absorbed in their busy lifestyles that they have no more time left to engage in proper skincare. Economy also plays a great deal on why people would refrain from availing those skincare services being offered in the media. The hard times take its toll on your skin.  It is no longer as supple as that of a baby and has become thinner and wrinkled with age. Your skin is drier due to less oil production from the sebaceous glands and the decrease in the number of blood vessels has made your skin lackluster without youthful glow.
There is more to skincare than just a case of vanity. Unknown to many, all human beings, whether healthy or not, probably have some Staphylococcus aureus bacteria on their skin. These bacteria, simply called staph, are usually found in your nose or throat and may not really cause much problems except for minor skin infections.  The skin serves as the body's first barrier against these bacterial infections.  This is why it is important to have healthy skin in order to ward off bacterial infections.  Once the skin is broken, cut or wounded, you are at risk for infection.  Once these bacteria gets to burrow deeper into your skin and penetrates your body into the bloodstream, urinary tract, lungs, and heart, these seemingly harmless bacteria can become life-threatening.
History showed that most cases of fatal staph infections in the past have occurred in people who have been in the hospital or those who are suffering from chronic illness and faltering immune system.  However, recent development proves that an increasing number of otherwise healthy people who have never been in a hospital are also acquiring these lethal staph infections.
Moreover, the usually powerful antibiotics no longer have an effect in fighting against certain strain of destructive bacteria that have evolved over time. Although as of now, most staph infections are still manageable and can be successfully treated, sooner or later, there will come a time that a new and deadlier strain of these bacterial infections will become resistant to most currently available skincare and medications.
The signs and symptoms of bacterial infections depends on the condition and affected area of the infection as well as the nature of illness if it is a direct infection from staph bacteria or from toxins produced by the bacteria. They may range from mild skin infections to food poisoning, deadly pneumonia, surgical wound infections, and endocarditis which is a lethal inflammation of the heart valves. Most skin infections caused by staph infections include the following: boils , cellulitis, impetigo, scalded skin syndrome, follicilitis, hordeolum, among others.
Most skin problems would require clinical care by medical professionals but it helps to take note of the following tips:
· Make sure to always clean and cover areas of skin that have been injured.
· Do not share towels, sheets, clothing until the infection has been fully healed.
· Do not touch to avoid spreading it to other parts of your body.
Always remember that cleanliness and good skincare hygiene is not just a form of vanity but it is a way of keeping your skin healthy and strong to be able to protect you in warding off bacterial infections as well as preventing many skin problems.

Bias in Health Information: Understanding the Agendas

Word Count:
826

Summary:
All health information and advice is biased, including mine. That doesn't mean it's worthless. But in order to judge the message and its applicability, you need to understand the underlying agenda.

Keywords:
medical,advice,bias,health,information,drug company,columnist,insurance company

Article Body:
Writers of medical advice--including columnists, insurance companies, governmental agencies, medical organizations, drug companies and even practitioners--are all biased. They always have agendas. They all choose to write about certain topics and not others. They make choices about what to include in their articles, what to leave out and how to state their cases. They're all self-serving. They all have something to "sell," even when there is not an immediate cash-return.

Does that mean you should throw up your hands, say the hell with it, and never read or listen to another medical message? I don't think so, but in order to derive value from these messages, you sure as heck better understand the agendas of the people who created them. Or as the psychologists say, if you want to understand a behavior, you need to figure out what motivated it. Let's examine some advice-givers and their biases.

What motivates health columnists? Well, how about their continued employment, the needs of their publisher-employers, and the needs of the companies the publishers wish to attract as advertisers? It's not hard to imagine there are some subtle and not-so-subtle influences and incentives at play in framing the subject-matter and slant of the articles. Certainly, it's hard to attract the business of potential advertisers when you have written devastating critiques of their products.

Yet don't infer that you should ignore what the health columnists have to say. They provide a wonderful service in discussing health issues, the business of medicine and its practice. I personally enjoy reading the health columns of that great medical publication, The Wall Street Journal. In fact, I still distribute to my patients an excellent article about medication-overuse headaches that Tara Parker-Pope, one of their columnists, wrote years ago.

One of the odder chapters in the business of medicine is that certain insurance companies have positioned themselves as providers of health advice, particularly those companies paid by employers to manage their medication-benefit plans. I won't waste the reader's time in building a case that insurance companies have agendas and conflicts-of-interest in providing such advice. This should be self-evident.

Governmental agencies like the National Institutes of Health provide medical information which is generally reliable and useful, but influenced by the agency's understandable needs for self-promotion and self-preservation. The same holds true for medical organizations like the American Academy of Neurology (to which I belong) and big group-practices like the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. The advice tendered by these medical organizations in their publications and web-pages is backed by their reputations, which they zealously protect. So you can be sure that the medical content is subjected to rigorous quality-control. And fortunately, although their messages are motivated by commercial needs, the linkages are obvious and easy for the consumer to take into account.

How about individual health practitioners? Giving advice is what they do for a living, so what's the issue? Well, in the U.S., at least, there is a genuine "medical marketplace" where competition reigns supreme. So when you need help with your health, each practitioner (including me!)  would like to make the short-list of advisers whose opinions you trust and value.

Let's move on to the drug companies. In my opinion there is no medical information that is both as pervasive and biased as that created by drug companies. And in many cases the connection between the message and the drug company's name has been obscured or hidden, so the consumer doesn't even know to be wary.

I have written elsewhere about the comical turn of events in the "advice" that drug companies have provided to people with headaches. For many years the makers of sinus medications invested heavily in convincing people with headaches that most of them were due to sinus disease. But now that effective and lucrative drugs for migraine exist, companies are sinking even larger sums of money into the message that those headaches weren't due to sinus conditions after all. Instead, they've been due to migraine. This vignette illustrates the hazard in allowing marketing departments of drug companies to diagnose one's headaches.

Another hazard is in allowing drug companies to write the information-sheets that doctors hand patients at the ends of office visits. Every doctor gets buried in pamphlets that sales reps from drug companies leave at their offices. For years I actually looked at these things, trying to select the 30% that might be worth retaining and passing along to my patients. After a while, 30% seemed too optimistic, so I searched for the 20% that was worth keeping, and then the 10%...well, you get the idea. The pamphlets kept getting more biased and less useful. At one time the sales reps passed out some real gems that were genuinely helpful to patients and their families. But those days are gone.

So when it comes to medical advice, consider the source.

Bicycles For All Ages- What You Should Think Over While Shopping!

Biking is fun for everyone! Not only is it a wonderful way to get around, it provides you with your daily dosage of exertion and activity as well.  So while bicycles have principally been a means of transport for a long time now, that is no longer the case. Bikes keep you fit. Bikes can add adventure to your dat. Bicycles also keep the surroundings cleaner. And for the more self righteous ones - bikes make you feel like you are doing the world a favour!

What to look at:
So you've decided to buy a bicycle, now the first thing you've got ask yourself is:
* Who's going to be using it?
* What it will be used for?
* How much are you willing to spend on it?
Your reason for buying a bike

Among many bike lovers, while most choose to bike casually, either to school, university or even work; some more adventurous ones have also been a part of stunt biking groups, professional biking clubs or mountain biking associations. Biking is a great hobby and with so many options to choose from, you can decide how best you associate with this great invention!  However, before you jump to any of that, you do need a bike. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when purchasing a bike either for your kids or for yourself.

Purchasing a bike for your toddler

So you've decided to initiate your toddler to the wonderful world of cycling; now the right time to get your toddler a two wheel bike is when they have reached age 3. By this age, kids have properly developed motor skills as well as a sense of balance and self sufficiency. Buying a bike for your child requires some research. Just knowing the brand and the colour preference is not enough. The bike needs to be comfortable enough for the child to ride, especially if the child is starting out learning to ride a bike.

The details

Bike sizes are classified via the size of the wheel. There are recommended wheel sizes for all age groups. When purchasing a bike for your child, pick the bike with the correct wheel size of 12 or 14 inches.  Take your child with you for bike shopping. Make sure her legs reach the floor. When riding a bike, this will give the child more self confidence. Also make sure you purchase a pair of detachable side wheels for training her so she can learn to balance.  Another important thing to keep in mind is to purchase a bike that is light in weight. Since you toddler is learning to ride, chances are she might fall a few times. And a heavy bike will worsen the experience. So while it is a bit more expensive, it is worth the investment. And while you are at it, don’t forget to purchase a bike helmet!

Bikes for kids in their pre-teens and teens

By the time your kids are in pre-teens or in their teens, they will have mastered the art of riding a bike and would have long outgrown the toddler bike. Now is the time for something different! Since they are a bit grown up, they will want more say in the purchase decision.  It is best to get to know what it is they are looking for. Now, remember, kids might want the world, but you are working with a budget. So make sure your child is aware of it before hand so he can do his bit of research as well within that budget.

Ergonomics

In this age group, most kids will use the bike to go to school and for after school activities like meeting friends, taking part in local racing competitions etc.  Consider the ergonomics of the bicycle. Make sure the handle bars are not too close to the seat as it will exhaust your child quite easily. And ensure that the seats are comfortable. The ideal wheel size for a pre-teenager’s bike is 18-22 inches. Make sure bikes for your young teen have coaster breaks for additional safety. Teenagers can use the same bike size used by adults, which is a standard 24 inches. Take your children with you so they can test ride the bikes before finally choosing one which fits their requirements and your budget.  Also, don’t forget to accessorize. Items like extra headlights, water-bottle, reflectors, mirrors, radio etc. will personalize the bike for your child.

Considerations when purchasing a bike for adults

The ideal bike size for adults is 24 inches.  When purchasing such a bike, ask yourself a couple of basic questions. Is the bike for casual riding or exercising or for a special hobby like mountain biking or for sports? You can opt for a single gear or multi-gear bike giving you the convenience of varying speed limits, based on where you are riding it. These days road bikes offer speed ranges of 12 to 21, to choose from. Another important thing to look for is adjustable seats and handle-bars.

Before you make a final purchase, test ride a couple of bikes since unlike kids, you are not likely to outgrow the bike you purchase. This also means you should go for something that is not just sturdy but also light.

Today, there are different brands with various models of bikes catering to all these specific requirements.  Based on your requirement, choose the right bike for your needs.

Thick lenses with a line across them were the only option available to those who had nearsightedness and farsightedness. The frames for glasses in general were heavy and very unattractive. The problem with wearing bifocals was getting used to them. You need to look either up or look down especially going down stairs. Adjusting to wearing bifocals made some people feel dizzy.

People had only one choice if they wore bifocals, eyeglasses. When contacts hit the market bifocals still had to be in eyeglasses. That was then and this is now. Those who wear eyeglasses may have far fewer choices than those who wear contact lenses may. Many people are happy because now contact lenses come in contact lenses. Contact bifocals are available in rigid, soft, and gas permeable materials.

Who needs to wear bifocal contact lenses? People focusing on near objects who have trouble. The name of what they suffer with is Presbyopia. Over the age of 40 is when this usually happens.

Alternating Design and Bifocal Eyeglasses are alike because one half of the lens enables distance vision and the other allows you to see near. Lenses that try to blend both near and distance prescriptions fill in the pupil area and are called Simultaneous Design. Your eyes will learn to interpret the circle power choices depending on how near or far you are looking.

The radial of contact lenses is the concentric design lens. The inner lens will work on either the nearness vision or the distant vision and so can the outer part of the lens.

Translating design contacts are similar to bifocal eyeglasses where the distant correction is above the nearness vision correction. A line makes the lenses separate. The bottom of the lens is flat to keep it from moving around in your eye when you blink.

Both distant and near vision are located at the center of the Asferic Design lenses. The near correction in the center is surrounded by distance correction.
Sometimes they can be reversed in some situations. You and your doctor can decide that.

With mono-vision design lenses you have one power lens in one eye and then the other power lens in the other eye. Usually the distant vision lens is worn in the dominant eye. An examination by your doctor will be able to determine this.

There are also simultaneous vision lenses. Your eyes can focus on things that are both near and far at the same time. Distant and near correction is concentric rings. The near and far parts of the lens are in sight all the time so the light from both distant and near objects can be focused on at the same time.

Simultaneous vision contact lenses have a problem. The light from the near part of the lens will go through the distant part and vice versa when the eye is looking through it. Both in focus and out of focus can be taken in by the eye at the same time.

The brain has to figure out which is the correct image. Whether contact lenses are bifocals or not, you must obtain a prescription. Your eye doctor will do a very thorough exam to decide if you are a candidate for bifocal contacts and what type might be right for you.

Lenses that fit and are comfortable may take time to find, as with any contact lens there is an adjustment. Bifocal lenses may not be for you, at least not in the contact lenses currently available.

There may be contact lenses out there, don't give up.Do your research if you really want contacts and need bifocals and keep informed on the types of lenses available to you. There are resources available online, through your eye care physician, and in some cases right from the manufacturer.

There are discount websites for contact lenses and some manufacturers will give you a coupon for their lenses if you try them. Your budget will affect your decision about bifocal lenses without a doubt.

Check with friends and family who wear contacts and see what their experience was like. Although not everyone has the same experience, the information could help you and your doctor make the decision. Bifocal contact lenses are available now for people with astigmatism.

Toric contact lenses come in both color and disposable lenses. Check with your eye doctor about Toric lenses because some professionals are uncomfortable fitting them.

Eyeglasses with thick lenses and a line across them were the only option for people with both nearsightedness and farsightedness. Eyeglass frames were heavy and not only that they were to say the least unattractive. Bifocal Contact lenses were difficult to get used to wearing. Going down stairs especially, you need to look either up or down. While getting adjusted to wearing bifocals some people get dizzy.

People had only one choice if they wore bifocals, eyeglasses. When contacts hit the market bifocals still had to be in eyeglasses. That was then and this is now. Contacts offer as many choices if not more than the choices available for eyeglass wearers. Many people are joyous because bifocals now come in contact lenses. Contact bifocals are available in rigid, soft, and gas permeable materials.

What people need to use bifocal lenses? Those who when focusing on near objects, have trouble. What they have is called Presbyopia. It is unusual for this to develop before the age of 40. Bifocals glasses are similar to Alternating Design because half the lens has distance power and the other half has powers for near objects.

Blended prescriptions for both near and distant vision are Simultaneous Design; they fill in the area of the pupil. Whether you are looking near or far your eye will adjust and learn to interpret the circle power choice. Concentric Design lenses are the radials of contact lenses. The inner lens works on the nearness vision while the outer part works on distant vision correction or vice versa.

Translating Design- these are also very similar to bifocal eyeglasses, the distance correction is above the near correction. The lenses are divided by a line. The lens has a flat bottom so that when you blink it won't move around in your eye. The center of the Asferic Design lenses is where both the near and distant vision is located.

The center of the lens is where the near vision correction is and it's surrounded by distant vision correction. In some situations they can be reversed. You can decide this with your doctor. You wear one power lens in one eye and the other in the other eye with Mono-vision Design lenses.

The distant vision is placed in the dominant eye usually. Here again your doctor's exam will be able to determine this. Simultaneous vision contacts are also available. Focusing on both near and far objects at the same time is possible with these lenses.

Concentric rings form the near and distant correction. Light from both near and far objects can be focused on at the same time since the near and far parts of the lens are in sight all the time.

Simultaneous vision contact lenses have a problem. When the eye is looking through the lens some of the light from the distant objects will enter the distant part and vice versa. The eye, at the same time takes in out of focus and focus.

The brain has to figure out which image is correct. Your doctor must provide you with a subscription for contact lenses not matter if they are bifocal or not.

Don't give up the search for the right lenses.

Do your research and keep up to date on the types of lenses available to you if you want contacts and need bifocals. By offering a free trial wear period of up to a week, some companies allow you to try their lenses and see if you like them.

Check out discount contact lens stores online and some manufacturers will give you a coupon to put toward the purchase of their lens if you try them. Your decision about bifocal lenses will without a doubt be affected by your budget.

Ask about the experience friends or family have had with contact lenses. You and your doctor can, with this information make a decision but not everyone has the same experience. The option of bifocal contact lenses is now available for people with astigmatism.

Toric contact lenses come in both color and disposable lenses. Some professionals do not like fitting Toric lenses so it is best to check with your eye care professional.

Bifocal Contact Lenses for Presbyopia

Summary:
Developments in the field of contact lens technology are producing ever better contact lenses that are increasingly convenient to wear throughout the whole gamut of vision conditions and lifestyles. Bifocal contact lenses are today available to correct presbyopia, a common problem in the over-40 age group.

Article Body:
Presbyopia is a vision condition in which they eyes are not able to focus clearly on near objects. It usually begins after the age of about forty when the lenses in the eye start reducing in flexibility. Presbyopia affects around 90 million adults in the USA alone and about one in four patients passing through an optometrist’s door will suffer from it.

Symptoms of presbyopia include difficulty in reading, difficulty in seeing in low lighting conditions and, occasionally, headaches.

Traditionally these vision problems were addressed with the old-fashioned reading glasses. Or existing eyeglass wearers could opt for bifocal eyeglasses. However the use of modern contact lenses for use with presbyopia has some distinct advantages beyond their cosmetic appeal. For example they can be well suited to other aspects of a wearer’s lifestyle such as sporting activities, exercising or using a computer.

Recently, contact lenses for correcting presbyopia have become available in more convenient types such as disposable or frequent replacement varieties. Today these are very popular lens types providing obvious benefits for the wearer.

HOW CONTACT LENSES CORRECT PRESBYOPIA

From a technical perspective, there are three distinct ways by which contact lenses can be used to correct presbyopia, each with advantages and disadvantages for particular types of patient. But the important thing here is that there is a choice and each wearer is likely to find one method best suited to their unique situation. The different contact lens methods are as follows:

MONOVISION

The monovision technique involves using in one eye a lens for seeing near objects and in the other eye a lens for seeing distant objects. Many people find that monovision works very well for them. It relies on the brain’s ability to selectively process and combine information from the best available sources in order to provide the clearest possible vision. In some instances, the optometrist might employ a bifocal lens in one eye and a normal distance lens in the other. The main problem associated with monovision is the apparent loss of depth of vision for some patients.

BIFOCAL CONTACT LENSES

As with traditional bifocal eyeglasses, each lens in bifocal contact lenses possesses two powers – one for seeing near objects, the other for distant objects. Some types of bifocal lenses when magnified look a little like a bull’s eye with an central inner zone surrounded by the outer zone. The drawback to this type of lens is that in certain conditions of reduced lighting, the vision might not always be as sharp in certain areas.

MULTIFOCAL CONTACT LENSES

Multifocal contact lenses work very much like the progressive lenses for eyeglasses. These lenses possess several zones of differing power in order to assist the eye gradually as it changes its focus on different objects at different distances. Therefore these lenses are designed to function well for seeing near, intermediate and distant objects. Their drawbacks are typically the same as for bifocal contact lenses, with occasional loss of visual acuity.

Bifocal lenses are available in two basic design types, 'Translating' and 'Simultaneous', the essential characteristics of which are as follows:

TRANSLATING BIFOCAL LENSES

Another name for the translating lens type is an 'alternating lens'. Gas Permeable bifocal lenses are regularly of this type. Their usage is very much like that of traditional bifocal eyeglasses. The wearer will look through one zone for distance vision then ‘translate’ to look through the other zone for near vision. Both zones aren’t looked through at the same time.

SIMULTANEOUS BIFOCAL LENSES

The majority of soft bifocal contact lenses on the market are of the 'simultaneous' type. As the name implies, with simultaneous lenses the wearer actually looks through the various powers of the lenses at the same time. What happens is that the brain steps in and ‘suppresses’ the power or powers, which aren’t needed at that particular time in order to see clearly. There exist further subdivisions of this lens type, but we won’t go into the details in this brief overview.

As with all contact lens selection and wear, choosing the right type of bifocal lens depends equally as much upon the wearer’s unique lifestyle as his unique vision characteristics. For example a patient who regularly undertakes sporting activities will have different needs from one who only needs to wear them socially or for use at work.

However, the success of adopting bifocal contact lenses relies very much on the expectations of the wearer who should realize that, almost by definition, bifocal lenses are very much a compromise and that he or she is never going to regain the acuity of vision in all environments that they had when younger. In most cases this is perfectly acceptable and bifocal lenses have now earned their place in the optometrist’s ever-expanding repertoire.

As we get older our eye can suffer from Presbyopia, this can occur when our eyes are unable to focus incoming light due to the loss and flexibility in our eye muscles. The unfortunate result is that trying to read close-up such as reading a book or newspaper or even trying to use computer screens can become blurred.
Bifocal contact lenses add an extra layer of near vision correction to the actually lens give you the power to focus and see object’s close-up. There is usually a far-vision layer also.
There are three different types of bifocal contact lens designs.

Alternating
Concentric
Simultaneous

In Alternating or translating bifocal lenses, the near and far connective layers of the lens are distinct from each other. The near correction layer is usually placed at the bottom of the lens but if needed can be reversed. The intermediate layer can also be added and changed.
In concentric bifocal lenses the near and far layers are arranged in rings, the near vision is in the centre and the far vision layer on the outer ring. If you have small pupils this arrangement can be reversed this would put the far vision layer in the centre and near vision on the outer ring.
In Simultaneous bifocal lenses both layers are in the centre of the lens, this may seem strange but your eyes learn to adapt to each correction layer. This of course may take a little time but you’re eye care specialist can advice more on this.
Some people may find it difficult to get used to bifocal contact lenses, if you have adapted to bifocal, trifocal, or progressive eyeglass lenses, you’ll already understand the basics of using translating bifocal contact lenses, in which the distance zone is straight ahead and above center, while the reading zone is lower. With simultaneous designs, your eyes will learn to focus near or far as needed. Whatever your particular lenses design, your eye-care specialised will make sure you understand how to use it.
Bifocal contact lenses come in soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP). In general soft contact lenses can become cloudy with protein deposits over time, they have also been known to be easy to tear.
Gas permeable contact lenses are more durable and made from a stronger plastic that stays clearer over time. When you have RGP bifocals they last longer but you may need new ones only when your presbyopia progresses so that you need a stronger near vision prescription.

For year’s people who had both nearsightedness and farsightedness had to suffer with eyeglasses that had thick lenses with a line across them. Not only were the glasses heavy but the frames for glasses in general were to say the least, unattractive. The other problem with the bifocal lenses was adjusting to them. You either have to look up or look down especially going downstairs. People often experience dizziness while adapting to the bifocal lenses.
For years people who needed bifocal lenses had only one choice, eyeglasses. Even when contact lenses came on the market, bifocals still could only be had in eyeglasses. That was then and this is now. Now contact lenses offer as many choices if not more choices than for those who wear eyeglasses. Now to the joy of many, there are bifocal contact lenses available. Bifocal contact lenses are available in soft, rigid, gas permeable materials.
Who needs to use bifocal lenses? People who have trouble focusing on objects that are near. They suffer with something called Presbyopia. This doesn’t usually develop after age 40.
There are various types of lenses and they are described below.

Alternating design- these are similar to bifocal glasses, half the lens has distance powers and the other half has powers for near objects.
Simultaneous Design-these lenses try to blend the powers of both distant and near sight prescriptions, they fill in the pupil area. Your eyes adapt and learn to interpret the circle power choice depending on how close or far you are looking.
Concentric Design-These are the radial of contact lenses. The lens works on near vision while outer part works on distant vision correction or vice versa.
Translating Design- these are also very similar to bifocal eyeglasses, the distance correction is above the near correction. A line separates the lenses. The lens is flat on the bottom to keep it from moving around in your eye when you blink.
Asferic Design-Distant and near vision are located at the center of the lens. Near correction is at the center while distance correction surrounds it. They can be reversed in some situations. The doctor will help you decide that.
Mono-vision Design-You wear one power lens in one eye and the other in the other eye. Distance vision is usually worn in the dominant eye. Again your doctor will be able to determine this with an examination.

There are also simultaneous vision contact lenses. These lenses allow the eyes to focus on both near and far objects at the same time. Near and distant correction is in concentric rings. Since the distant and near parts of the lens are in sight all the time light from both distant and near objects can be focused on at the same time.
There is a problem with simultaneous vision lenses. While the eye is seeing through the lens some light from distant objects will go through the near vision, and the light from near objects will go through the distant part of the lens. The eye takes both in focus and out of focus at the same time. It is up to the brain to figure out which is the desired image.
Contact lenses whether bifocal or not can only be obtained with a prescription. Through a comprehensive examination your eye doctor will determine whether you are a candidate for bifocal contact lenses and what specific type might be right for you. As with any contact lens there is an adjustment period and it might take more than one try before you get lenses that are the right fit and comfortable for you.
The reality though is that bifocal contact lenses may not be for you, at least in the contact lenses that are now available. Don’t give up. If you really want contact lenses and you need bifocals, do your research and keep up to date on the types of lenses available for you.
If you want to try contact lenses some companies have free trial periods of up to a week for you to try the lenses and see how you like them. There are resources available online, through your eye care physician, and in some cases right from the manufacturer. There are discount contact lens sites and some manufacturers offer coupons to you for trying them out. Your budget will undoubtedly play a part in your decision about bifocal contact lenses.
Ask friends or family members who have contact lenses what their experience has been like for them. Of course, not everyone has the same experience but in general, the information could help you and your physician make a determination.
Bifocal contact lenses are available for people with astigmatism. Toric contact lenses in particular come in both colors and disposable types. Consult with your eye care professional, as some professionals are not comfortable with fitting Toric lenses.

article:

As we age, many of us notice that we can’t read as well as we used to. We hold things out further and further, literally at arm’s length, until friends and relatives inevitable begin joking about our arm’s getting shorter.
For many of us, presbyopia is a fact of life.  Simply defined, presbyopia is the inability to focus on items in close range.  This condition is caused by the lens in the eye becoming less and less flexible as we age.  Unfortunately, most of us will need corrective lenses and even bifocals at some point as this condition worsens.
Until recently, bifocal wearers had few options when choosing corrective eyeware.  Glasses with bifocal lenses were the most common option.  Luckily, no-line bifocal lenses were developed, and the glasses became somewhat more attractive.  Some struggled with the “one contact lens” option, called monovision, but this seemed to result in a lot of squinting for the users and usually required a difficult adjustment period.
Recently, bifocal contact lenses have been developed for almost every kind of contact lens on the market.  This advancement is great for the aging population already wearing single vision contacts but needing to “step up” to the bifocal lens.
Bifocal contact lenses work just like bifocal glass lenses do; two powers of glass in each lens provide different focus adjustments, one for far away (distance) and another for close up.  Both adjustments are contained in each contact lens.  Different manufacturers make different types of bifocal lenses, and it may take some experimentation to discover which type is right for you.
Some bifocal contact lenses are made with a concentric design.  Like concentric circles, one adjustment is in the middle of the lens, and the other adjustment is around the outside of the lens.  The two are distinct, with a sharp delineation between the two.  Although they sound difficult to use, most find that they eye will adjust and use the proper ring with a little practice.
Aspheric lenses have a more gradual change between focuses.  Both of the powers are in the area of the pupil, and as with the concentric lens, the eye will adjust and learn to choose the proper focus to use.
The third type of bifocal lens is the translating lens.  Like bifocal glasses, the near correction is near the bottom of the lens and the distance correction is above.  Since these lenses can’t shift in the eye, they are usually made so that they can’t move easily.
Ask your optometrist which type of lens he’d recommend for you.  Since each will take require an adjustment period, be patient.  You may want to research brands and types of lenses before going to your optometrist to decide if you want extended wear, daily disposable lenses or conventional contact lenses.
Whatever type you choose, the new bifocal contact lenses on the market can ensure that aging baby boomers can continue to read without sacrificing style or dignity.
