Summers always begin on the longest day of the year. Summers are the perfect days in which everyone can enjoy all the outdoor activities like swimming, taking trips to rocks, reading books while resting in hammock or any activity for that matter, which you had put to rest in winters.

Summer is the best time of the year in which your mood changes for the good. This is evident from the fact that people suffering from mood disorders throughout the winters start to feel nice. According to the scientists, mood disorders are linked with the hours of day as well as light. Researchers feel that the increase of Vitamin D in people, which arises mainly from the sun, affects the mood to a very great extent.

General beliefs of the people are that mood changes in summers mainly due to the fun and leisure activities, since most of the people go for vacations. In many countries many industries and towns are shut down in August because of severe heat. August is the month that showers severe heat. This makes people confined to their homes close to their air conditioners.

It is important to stay back at homes because of the fact that summers are the season when one is prone to dehydration and heat strokes. They are very serious problems about which people should take care. It is advisable to consume a lot of water while indulging in the outdoor activities to keep the body and its temperature cool. Water is the best solution to avoid these problems.

It is sensible to carry sunscreen whenever going outside in summers to avoid the sun burns. Overexposure to sun can lead to sunburns and various types of skin cancers. Recently, experts quoted that sun is good for health and good source for Vitamin D, but in limited form.

If this conflicting information confuses you then practice moderation. It is not a serious problem to get little sun and suntan but a heavy tan can land you in trouble. To avoid suntans sunscreen is the best medicine that would make you feel better. Children should be paid more attention to as they have very sensitive and delicate skin. Sunburns should be avoided on their skin by feeding them with loads of fluids and water. Because of their small size, it takes much less time for them to get dehydrated, especially in summers. It is wise to restrict their outdoors activities to the early morning and evening hours, as that is the time they have a lesser chance of getting sunburns as compared to other hours of the day.

article:

When you need comfort what do you reach for? Do you have a particular food you always go for?
Of course it's better to take comfort in something other than food. If you can phone a friend or cuddle your dog or your partner that's great, but chances are you'll often still turn to food for comfort.
Maybe you love the taste and texture of ice cream or chocolate as it melts in your mouth. Maybe you choose pizza because it fills you up and makes you feel warm inside. Maybe there's a food that reminds you of the good times in your life or one which always makes you feel better when you're fed up.
Food can and does evoke lots of great feelings.
But what if your favourite comfort food also
* Uses up half a day's calorie allowance?
* Pads out your hips and stomach with fat you don't want?
* Clogs your arteries?
* Gives you a huge hit of sugar which creates a craving for more sugary/starchy food?
* Makes you feel full of regret rather than comfort when you've eaten it?
Is it such a friend to you then? Pretty false friend I would say!
If that's the case how about getting attached to a new comfort food?
Don't worry - it doesn't have to be boring like carrots and celery – no one was ever comforted by a carrot! Choose something absolutely delicious that you can make and keep in your freezer or have available to cook at a moments notice ready to cheer you up when you feel nothing but food will do the trick.
How about keeping some hearty warming soup in your freezer and eating it with crusty bread from ready-to-bake rolls? Or serving up childhood treats like boiled egg and toast or milky puddings made with low-fat milk? How about cooking some potato wedges with very little oil - and enjoying a mini feast without the calories of French Fries. No matter what you like there will be something healthy which works for you.
So forget pizza, ice cream and chocolate. They will always be false friends, making you feel worse after any close encounter.
Choose a new real comfort food that you can get ready at a moment's notice and enjoy something which is better for your waistline as well as your soul.

Coming Back To Haunt You

Summary:
Children are often nervous, anxious creatures. However, if this anxiety is not  treated quickly, it can become a problem that will be carried into adulthood.

Keywords:
child anxiety, social anxiety, performance anxiety, anxiety, separation anxiety

Article Body:
Children all tend to show signs of anxiety. This is understandable since as children have a lot of things to adjust to that adults have already allowed their minds to get used to. All those new experiences can be a little overwhelming for a child whose mind has yet to fully adapt to his own situation, let alone being thrust into an entirely unfamiliar environment. To a certain degree, a little child anxiety is actually perfectly normal and, to a degree, perhaps even expected. However, if your child does not outgrow his anxiety, it can lead to some psychological disorders later in life. If that occurs, a little social anxiety might turn out to be the least of your worries.

Child anxiety, contrary to what some might believe, can lead to problems later on in life. The obvious evolution would be social anxiety, particularly if the child just can't seem to adapt himself to the social situations he finds himself in. Since being sociable and being able to adapt to changing social situations is an integral part of a professional development, being seen by one's superiors to be unable to work well within a team or organization can result in a stunted career. Social anxiety can also cause the child to lose confidence in other facets of his life, which can then result in an inferiority complex.

There are very few concrete studies that show how child anxiety can develop into any other mental disorder, though there is ample evidence to suggest that this is happening. The question, in reality, is just what this anxiety can develop into when a person reaches adulthood, as well as when the critical time for dealing with the problem would be. Another concern is how to tell when the child's behavior is perfectly natural and when the child is starting to show signs of a problem that needs to be fixed. All too often, it is considered a highly subjective thing and it can be difficult for even medical professionals to tell the difference between the two.

Among the more common disorders that require moderate therapy include social anxiety and separation anxiety disorder. Children generally have difficulty with the concept of “letting go” of the people that they feel safe with. This inability to let go can easily develop into separation anxiety if allowed to develop into adulthood. While the targets of the problem changes, the nature of it remains essentially the same. The inability to adapt to situations socially has already been mentioned, though this can also potentially lead to performance anxiety if the adult is capable of recognizing his own skills but is incapable of utilizing them to full effect.

A problem here is the lack of concrete information on the development of this problem, as well as the lack of attention it is receiving. There are only a few studies that are dedicated to this particular facet of psychology, mainly because anxiety disorders in adults tend to be the more prominent focus. Another problem lies in the number of environmental factors to be considered, as well as the various differences in children's personalities. However, the core problem in diagnosing this problem lies in the perception of the parents themselves. One parent's child anxiety can be interpreted as nothing more than ordinary shyness by another parent.

What Is Soap?
Soap is the oldest cleanser around.  It is created by a chemical reaction between oils, water and lye. Although lye is used to make soap there is no lye left after saponification (the chemical reaction that makes soap) is complete. There is no such thing as a bar of soap that was made without the use of lye. Different kinds of soap are made using a variety of different oils. Both animal & plant oils can be used in the soap making process, each adding different qualities to the soap.
Conventional Bar Soaps
Much of the soap available in the store today is not really soap at all, but a detergent.  Detergents are a petroleum based product, like gasoline and kerosene.  Have you ever noticed how regular soap leaves your skin feeling dry, itchy and tight?  Alkali, the most common irritant in soap is often the culprit.  Others ingredients in mass-marketed soap have been proven harmful to human health and can cause severe skin irritations in some people.  These include ingredients such as DEA, Isopropyl Alcohol, BHT and Triclosan (commonly found in anti-bacterial soap).  The most common ingredient in conventional bar soaps is sodium tallowate.  It is the natural product of combining tallow, or beef fat, with lye.  The attractiveness for tallow for mass producing soap is that it processes quickly, produces a hard bar of soap and is cheap and plentiful.
The New Bar On The Block
While there is nothing new about handmade soap, its popularity is growing rapidly.  The sales of handmade soap continue to grow as part of society’s movement toward buying products that are healthy and good for the environment.  With the ever increasing use of synthetic chemicals and studies about their dangerous effects, consumers are on the lookout for more “green” alternatives.
Benefits Of Handmade Soap
Evidence abounds of the healing properties of a handmade bar of soap.  Those who suffer from skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, as well as people that have sensitive skin or are hypoallergenic often find immediate relief by switching to handmade soap.  Compared to store bought soap, handmade soap is very mild. They are often made from vegetable-based oils, such as olive, coconut, and palm and do not contain the potentially harmful chemicals found in conventional bar soap. One of the biggest differences between commercial soap and handmade soap is glycerine. Glycerine is a clear liquid that absorbs water from the air and is a key factor in keeping skin soft and healthy. Glycerin soap is especially good for sensitive and delicate skin, and for children. Because it is a high quality by-product in the soap making process,  many mass commercial soap manufacturers often extract the glycerine and sell it as a by-product to be used in higher priced products like lotions and skin creams.
Handmade Soap Is Good For Your Body
For adults, the skin covers approximately 20 square feet of the human body.  It is the largest human organ and is the bodies first line of defense against dehydration, temperature, infection and harmful substances.  Handmade soaps give your skin the care it deserves and make bathing a gentle, soothing experience.
Handmade Soap Is Good For Your Mind
For many of us today, life seems to move at an often hectic pace. While the stress of everyday life increases, personal time is at minimum.  A fragrant, handmade bar of soap is a simple indulgence that fosters a feeling of relaxation and being pampered.  Treat yourself or someone you love to the benefits of handmade soap!

Common Arthritic Pain Relief Cream Components

Word Count:

Summary:
A pain relief cream is a popular choice in soothing and relieving joint pain caused by arthritis. Some of the common components of arthritic pain relief creams include salicylate, NSAID, capsaicin, emu oil, menthol, and eucalyptus oil. This article provides an overview of the common components of arthritic pain creams.

Keywords:
pain relief cream

Article Body:
Arthritis  is a common condition characterized by joint pain and inflammation. If you are suffering from arthritis, there are several ways by which you can relieve the pain it causes. A popular option is by applying an arthritic pain relief cream.  Since most arthritis creams available in the market are topical, they often produce instant results. However, with the variety of pain relief creams in the market, each with its own active painkilling ingredient, choosing one can be tough. Below are some of the most common components of pain relief creams available today:

Salicylate

One of the most popular components of arthritic pain creams is salicylate, an ingredient found in aspirin. Salicylate can enter the bloodstream and produce the same effects as an orally ingested aspirin. Although salicylate-based creams are effective, they should be avoided by anyone taking blood-thinning medicines or is allergic to aspirin.

NSAID

Nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs are also common ingredients found in pain relief creams, particularly those that target athletes as their main consumers. NSAID-based pain relief creams are  available only through prescription since their active ingredients may cause side effects.  As it is, if you are thinking of using an NSAID-based pain relief cream, talk to your doctor first.

Capsaicin

Capsaicin is a popular ingredients in most natural pain relief creams. An ingredient found in chili peppers, capsaicin works by ridding the nerve cells of pain-inducing Substance P. Pain relief creams with capsaicin work best when applied on the knees, fingers, and elbows. Although highly effective in soothing joint pain caused by arthritis,  capsaicin-based creams can  irritate and cause burining sensations in the eye and mouth areas. Thus, it is essential that you wash your hands properly after applying capsaicin creams. If the cream is applied to your hands, wearing mittens or gloves are strongly recommended. Alternatively, you can wait for 30 minutes or so until the cream is fully absorbed before washing your hands. Applying capsaicin creams to broken skin or using a heat pad after is a no-no. Breastfeeding mothers and those allergic to chilies are also advised to avoid using capsaicin creams.

Emu Oil

Creams that use emu oil as their active ingredients are usually pricier since authentic emu oils are imported from Australia. Creams with emu oil are very effective against joint pain with no severe side effects. Emu oil creams get absorbed easily, thus, providing quick relief.

Eucalyptus Oil or Menthol

Aside from heat, cold therapy also works well against joint pain. Using creams with menthol or eucalyptus oils as active ingredients is a convenient way of providing your joints with a cooling sensation. Eucalyptus oil or menthol-based creams works well for mild arthritic pain but they must be applied at frequent intervals. Like capsaicin, these creams must not be used near the eyes or mouth.

There are different pain relief creams for arthritis and choosing one that best suits your needs and lifestyle is essential in ensuring maximum efficiency.  Take note of the advantages and disadvantages of each active ingredient to find out which is the best one for you.

Common Aspects of Peptic Ulcer

Summary:
Peptic ulcer is basically a lesion located at the level of the stomach, duodenum or esophagus. Ulcer tends to affect the entire gastrointestinal tract, starting from the lining of the mouth and ending with the rectal region. Peptic ulcer suggests the involvement of hydrochloric acid and pepsin in the development of the disorder. When gastric acid is produced in excess, the mucosal membrane that protects the stomach and internal organs from danger is damaged, enabling the bacteria Helicobacter pylori to penetrate the barrier and cause internal infections. Therefore, in the case of peptic ulcer, both gastric acid and bacteria are responsible for the development of the disorder.

Peptic ulcer suggests the involvement of hydrochloric acid and pepsin in the development of the disorder. Therefore, in the case of peptic ulcer, both gastric acid and bacteria are responsible for the development of the disorder.

Peptic ulcer located in the stomach is called gastric ulcer; peptic ulcer located at the level of the duodenum is called duodenal ulcer and peptic ulcer developed at the level of the esophagus is called esophageal ulcer.

Peptic ulcer is very common, millions of Americans being diagnosed with different forms of the disorder each year. The advance of modern medicine has allowed scientists to find out more valuable information about these disorders, enabling them to develop new medical treatments. Although in the past peptic ulcer was known to affect mostly male persons, more and more women suffer from forms of peptic ulcer nowadays. Statistics indicate that the predominance of smoking among women has determined an increase of peptic ulcer incidence with the female gender.

Peptic ulcers can sometimes develop into more serious disorders. As a result of complications, peptic ulcer may lead to perforate or bleeding ulcer. These two forms of ulcer are considered to be very dangerous, research results indicating a high probability of death due to such complications. Perforate ulcer involves severe tearing of the mucosal membrane, causing acute pain and sourness at the abdominal level. Bleeding ulcer involves internal hemorrhages and it needs immediate medical intervention. Most forms of perforate and bleeding ulcer require surgery due to their gravity. If the bleeding is severe, the medical intervention is primarily focused on stopping the hemorrhage and resuscitating the patient. The patient requires blood transfusions to compensate for the loss of blood and needs to be kept under constant monitoring until recovered.

The most common symptoms of bleeding ulcer are: nausea, fever, vomiting blood, presence of blood in the feces, black feces, dehydration, fatigue and body weakness. Due to loss of blood, such forms of ulcer may lead to anemia.

Some peptic ulcers are therefore more difficult to treat than others. When dealing with peptic ulcer, it is very important too keep away from alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes and cola, as these may all aggravate the symptoms of the disorder. You should try to respect a healthy diet and follow the medical treatment prescribed by your physician. If you respect these directions, your ulcer symptoms will most likely ameliorate within the first week of treatment, ensuring the remission of the disorder.

Common Birth Control Methods and How Effective They Are

Word Count:
590

Summary:
There are numerous birth control methods out there, which means that people have a wide range of options to choose from. However,it should be noted that each method carries with it a certain number of positive and negative aspects, as well as a certain amount of retained risk of pregnancy.

Keywords:
birth control

Article Body:
There are multiple methods, tools, and techniques that a woman can use in pursuit of birth control. There are a few options

available to men as well, but females have the wider range of choices. It should be noted, however, that there are a few

caveats. For example, very few methods for contraception – or “family planning,” as the Catholic Church calls it – are

completely safe. In fact, a vast majority of them still have a slight risk of going awry.

Scientifically speaking, the single most effective form of birth control is still abstinence. No sex means no chance of

conceiving, after all. Technically speaking, human fertilization is still possible through artificial insemination.

Abstinence, as a form of birth control, does not cost anything. It also provides the additional benefit of preventing someone

from getting an STD. However, many people find the lack of sex to be a frustrating aspect of abstinence, and the one trait of

the method that is likely to make it unappealing.

Withdrawal, also known as coitus interruptus, is supposedly an effective form of birth control. The process involves having

the male “withdraw” from the vagina just prior to ejaculation, preventing the sperm from entering the cervix of the female.

Some men have expressed problems with this approach, mainly because it forces men to remain on-guard at all times. This, in

theory, causes sexual frustration on the part of the male and, arguably, reduces sexual gratification for both parties. While

most couples find this an acceptable trade-off in favor of contraception, the fact is that even withdrawal still poses a

certain degree of risk of pregnancy. This method may not work as effectively as it should, depending on a number of variables

including the presence of fluid on the tip of the penis that might already contain sperm cells even before the man

ejaculates.

The Catholic Church-approved Natural Family Planning method is one that presents even more risks, mainly due to the number of

variables involved. The main problem with this is that it requires a detailed, intimate understanding of the female partner's

ovulation cycle and the dependence on the regularity of it. This method involves estimating when the female is at her least

fertile, which is taken as the only time when sex would be safe from the possibility of pregnancy. However, this only works

if the female's ovulation cycle is regular, with the slightest unknown alteration or interruption increasing the risks. In

contrast, if the couple ever decides to have a child, they also have an idea of when the female is at her most fertile,

increasing chances of conception.

Pills are usually among the most favored birth control methods on the market. These medications rely on manipulating the

hormone levels of the woman's body, preventing the release of the egg cell from the ovaries. There have been numerous side

effects associated with the use of the pill, but in general terms, it is the most effective pharmaceutical method out there.

However, this is true only if the prescribed schedule for taking the pills is followed, since the slightest interruption or

alteration could disrupt the hormonal flow that the pills control.

Condoms are one of two birth control options for males, and also the option that has the highest risk. Condoms can rupture or

have small holes in them, which can reduce their effectiveness. On their own, condoms can be a problem. However, when used in

conjunction with other birth control methods, such as the pill, then it can be very effective in preventing pregnancy.

Article Body:
The most common medical complaints are that of back pain.  On a positive note, back pain episodes usually diminish within a few weeks if caused from muscle strain.  Unfortunately, a backache can be among the most difficult and frustrating problems for patients and their doctors.

Understanding the cause of your pain is the key to proper treatment.  Because back pain is sometimes difficult to treat, a better understanding of the causes of will assist patients in their recovery.

The most common causes of back pain are:

Muscle strains are the most common cause of low back pain.  Patients may or may not remember the initial event that triggered their muscle spasm, but the good news is that most episodes of back pain from muscle strains fade away completely within a few weeks.

A ruptured intervertebral disc, also called a herniated disc, is another common cause of back pain.

Discogenic back pain is thought to be a common cause of low back pain.  Discogenic back pain is the result of damage to the intervertabral disc, but without disc herniation.  Diagnosis of discogenic back pain may require the use of a discogram.

Spinal stenosis causes back pain in the aging population.  As we age, the spinal canal can become constricted, due in part to arthritis and other conditions.  If the spinal canal becomes too tight, back pain can be the result.

Arthritis most commonly affects joints such as the knees and fingers.  However, arthritis can affect any joint in the body, including the small joints of the spine.  Arthritis of the spine can cause back pain with movement.

Spondylolisthesis causes back pain because adjacent vertebra become unstable and begins to "slip."  The most common cause of spondylolisthesis is due to degenerative changes causing loss of the normal stabilizing structures of the spinal column.  If the spine becomes unstable enough, back pain can become a problem.

As stated earlier, backaches are hard to diagnose.  The causes listed above are just a few of the most common reasons why people suffer with back pain.  If you suffer from acute backaches, you should meet with your physician.

Cigarette smoking is probably the most closely related link to developing lung cancer.  A person who smokes two packs or more of cigarettes per day has a one in seven chance of developing lung cancer.  Those that smoke one pack of cigarettes per day have a twenty-five times greater chance of developing lung cancer than a non-smoker.  In addition, those people that smoke a pipe or cigar have a five times greater chance of developing lung cancer than a non-smoker.

The risk of developing lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked over your lifetime.  Cigarette smoking damages the cells in your lungs.  The moment you stop smoking, your lungs begin healing themselves, replacing damaged cells with healthy, normal cells.  Your risk of developing lung cancer begins decreasing almost immediately when you quit smoking.  Every year that you do not smoke, your chances of developing lung cancer drop further.  By the fifteenth year, your chances of developing lung cancer are about the same as those of a person who has never smoked.

Secondhand Smoke
Also known as passive smoking, people exposed to secondhand smoke on a regular basis will have a higher risk of developing lung cancer, even if they do not smoke themselves.  Studies have shown that those who live with a smoker have a 24% greater risk of developing lung cancer than most non-smokers.  Doctors estimate that about 3000 lung cancer deaths a year are related to secondhand smoke.

Asbestos Exposure
Exposure to asbestos is another well-known cause of lung cancer and mesothelioma - cancer of the pleural lining of the lungs.  Asbestos was widely used in construction and everyday products in the late 1800s through the 1960s.  Asbestos separates into fine silica fibers that become trapped in the tissues of the lungs.  Mesothelioma is inextricably linked to asbestos exposure.  There are no reported cases of mesothelioma in people who were not exposed to asbestos either in the workplace or through their environment.  A non-smoker who was exposed to asbestos has a five times greater risk of developing lung cancer than a non-smoker who was not exposed.  Smoking increases the risk dramatically - a smoker who was exposed to asbestos has a risk of developing lung cancer that is 50 to 90 times greater than that of a non-smoker.

Radon Gas
It is estimated that about 12% of lung cancer deaths can be attributed to radon gas, a colorless, odorless gas that is a natural byproduct of the decay of uranium.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that as many as 15% of homes in the United States have unsafe levels of radon gas, which will account for 15,000 to 22,000 deaths from lung cancer annually.

Air Pollution
Scientists estimate that as many as 1% of all lung cancer deaths are attributable to air pollution.  They believe that prolonged exposure to very polluted air can raise the risks of developing lung cancer to about the levels of a passive smoker.

Common Cold Care and Prevention

Summary:
Common cold is a situation that occurs more than any other disease, hence, the name. A person battling common cold normally can be treated at home. As so many different viruses can cause the common cold, no vaccination against it has yet been developed. However, there are some things one can do to help prevent it from spreading.

Keywords:
common cold, stress, depression, headache, bacterial infection

Article Body:
For all its findings, discoveries, and achievements, medical science still has yet to come up with a cure.  Common cold occurs more often than any other disease hence, its name. There are approximately 200 viruses that can cause a cold. Most colds are caused by rhinoviruses (the name comes from “rhin,” the Greek word for nose) that are in invisible droplets in the air we breathe or on the things we touch. Aside from rhinoviruses, there are more than 100 subtypes that cause up to half of all colds. They can infiltrate the protective lining of the nose and throat, triggering an immune system reaction that can lead to sore throat, headache, and experience difficulty breathing through the nose. A common cold results from exposure to the virus. Infections are spread from one person to another, by hand-to-hand contact, or by a cough or sneeze that sprays many virus particles into the air. Its intensity, however, depends upon the state of health of the person and environmental factors.

The common cold (also called viral rhinitis) is a viral infection, characterized by nasal congestion, a clear, runny nose, sneezing, scratchy throat and general malaise. Low vitality, exposure to cold, lack of sleep, depression, fatigue, and factors such as sudden changes in temperature, dust, and other irritating inhalations are important contributory causes.

Normally, common cold symptoms can be treated at home. Antibiotics are not prescribed because they do not work against viruses, however, if the cold leads to complications such as sinusitis, ear infection, tonsilitis, or chronic bronchitis, a physician may prescribe antibiotics. Moreover, a person in good health who becomes the victim of a cold may not need to see a doctor.

To relieve the symptoms of a cold, the following self-care advice may be helpful:
Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids to keep yourself hydrated. This is especially important for children. Water is best, but warm drinks can be soothing.
Rest and avoid stress and strenuous activity.
Keep the room at a comfortable temperature, but make sure that fresh air is circulating.
Smoke irritates the nose and throat. Try to avoid being around people who smoke and avoid smoke-filled environments like pubs or clubs. If you are a smoker, try to smoke as little as possible while you are feeling unwell,

If common cold is accompanied with coughing, a cough medicine may help to soothe a ticklish or dry cough. Over-the-counter products available from the local pharmacist are often sold as combined remedies for treating a cough and cold.  Preparations may contain several ingredients and it should always follow the manufacturers instructions to make sure one is taking the right dosage for the symptoms. As so many different viruses can cause the common cold, no vaccination against it has yet been developed. However, there are some things one can do to help prevent it from spreading:

Wash your hands regularly and properly, especially after touching your nose or mouth and before handling food.

Always sneeze and cough into tissues. This should help prevent the virus-containing droplets from your nose and mouth entering the air where they can infect others. Throw away used tissues immediately and then wash your hands.

Do not share cups or kitchen utensils with others. Use your own cup, plates and cutlery.

If a cold becomes nasty, like if a person develops chest pain or starting to experience difficulty in breathing, immediately seek medical attention.  A doctor will likely examine the throat and ears, and the doctor may take a throat culture by brushing your throat with a long cotton-tipped swab. This will show whether a person has a bacterial infection, which requires treatment with antibiotics. Otherwise a person battling a common cold, can treat all the symptoms at home.

Common Cold: As Common As The Air We Breathe

Summary:
A common cold is an infection of the upper respiratory tract, nose and throat. It is  usually harmless, although it may not feel that way. Article Body:
Watery eyes, congestion, sniffles, sneezes, sore throat, cough, headache...these are some of the symptoms of a common cold. A common cold is an infection of the upper respiratory tract, nose and throat. It is  usually harmless, although it may not feel that way. The common cold usually catches up with us at one time or another. With children getting as many as eight colds per year or more. This contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract is the most common infectious disease in the United States and the number-one reason children visit the doctor and stay home from school.

They can infiltrate the protective lining of the nose and throat, triggering an immune system reaction that can make throat sore, suffer headache, and experience difficulty to breathe through the nose. While getting a chill does not cause a cold, there are factors that make a person more susceptible to attack by cold viruses. These include excessive fatigue, depression, allergies involving nose and throat symptoms, and the middle phase of the menstrual cycle.

A cold begins when one of several different kinds of cold virus attaches to the lining of the nose or throat. The immune system sends white blood cells out to attack this germ. Unless a person encountered it before, the initial attack fails and the body sends in reinforcements. The nose and throat get inflamed and produce lots of mucus. With so much of energy directed at fighting the virus, a person suffering from cold feel tired and miserable.

The common cold is spread mostly by hand-to-hand contact. Like if a person with a cold blows or touches his or her nose, and then touches someone else's, the person becomes infected with the virus as well. Then, the cold virus can live on objects such as pens, books, and coffee cups for several hours and can be acquired from such objects. While common sense would suggest that coughing and sneezing spread the common cold, these are actually very poor mechanisms for spreading a cold.

There’s still no cure for the common cold, however, there are plenty of cold symptom remedies. The major home impact that we can have on the common cold is hand washing. Hand washing has clearly been shown to prevent the spread of colds. This can be particularly effective in public places and is recommended before meals. While there is news about treating the common cold with Zinc, this is still not considered to be confirmed by adequate scientific research. Its benefits remain unproven. Vitamin C has been said to reduce the duration of symptoms from a common cold but medical research has not supported this.

If symptoms of a common cold aren't improving, it is always advisable to see a doctor to make sure one don't have a complication of a bacterial infection in the lungs, sinuses or ears. The common cold is truly common, cause it is the most contagious infection one will encounter in his or her entire life.

Common Computer Workstation Mistakes and Solutions for Pain Relief - Part 1 Author:  Wendy Young

If you are experiencing pain in your wrists, fingers, hands, neck, shoulder or back and work at a computer for more than four hours per day there it is time to take a close look at how your computer workstation is designed.

Following are a few of the challenges I have seen in thousands of workstation designs. Does this sound like you?

Chair Armrests Too High Or Low:

In most instances the armrests are adjusted too high. Most keyboards are placed on surfaces too high for them and the computer user will adjust the armrest to the height of the work surface thinking this is supporting them properly.

They are inadvertently raising their shoulders to a tensed position. If the shoulder muscles are tensed for any length of time with repetitive motion in the hands or arms, varying levels of pain or discomfort may develop depending on the length of time in this tensed position.

Solution: Adjust the armrests up or down so that the shoulders muscles are in a relaxed position while resting on the armrests. If your shoulders are shrugged at all then the armrests are too high. If you are leaning into either armrest this could be an indication that the armrests are too low. The best way to do this is to drop your arms down by your side and just let your shoulders relax. It is important that you get a "feel" for this. In this fast paced and competitive world computer users are so focused on their work that they are not aware of the physical comfort changes that are occurring in their bodies on a daily basis.

Improper Sitting Posture:

If you are slouching in your chair you might be reducing your ability to take deep breathes due to collapsing your diaphragm.  This can cause fatigue and discomfort because oxygen and nutrients cannot travel efficiently to your lower extremities and your brain.

Solution: Sit all the way back in your chair with the lower part of your back firmly touching the backrest. This will enable you to sit in a neutral posture with ease.  Be sure you know how to adjust your chair. The chair is the foundation of the computer work area and if you have a great chair that is not adjusted properly then it will not do you any good. You want you feet to be flat on the floor or on a footrest.

Monitor Too High Or Low:

If the monitor is too low it requires bending the neck forward or down to view the screen. In high position the neck will bend backwards to read the screen.

Solution: Try this exercise. Relax your head and neck. If you do this correctly your head will be in a slight forward tilt. Now relax your eyes by letting your eyes "fall" to their lowest position in your eyes. Notice the lowest line on the screen you can read without raising your eyes or head. Position the monitor height so that the information you are reading is centered in this area.

For 19-21" monitors the top of the viewable screen will be approximately 2" below the line of sight. The line of sight is defined as the imaginary straight line from your eyes to the screen. Let your eyes and body determine what is comfortable.

Monitor and Keyboard Not Centered Together:

The computer user often will have the monitor placed to the side and will twist their neck left or right to view the screen. This added tension in the neck can create varying levels of discomfort.

Solution: Place the keyboard directly in front of the monitor so that you can look at the monitor without turning your neck sideways at all. If you use the mouse frequently and do not use the number pad on your keyboard you may consider an ergonomic keyboard with a 15" footprint. This will balance the keyboard AND mouse with the monitor.

Be on the lookout for Part 2 in the next few days…

Common Health Blunders Made By Doctor Averse Men

Word Count:

Summary:
Men aren’t the only ones making health blunders. Women run to the doctor all the time. Nonetheless, experts say women have a tendency to take care of the rest of the family before taking care of themselves. Women- you are really good at caring for others, but you are not often the best judge of your own health.

Article Body:
Men- it’s time to take care of your bodies! Most of you take better care of your cars than you do your health. Why is this? According to new medical information, the essential male blunder is the notion many men have that a real man is a man with no vulnerabilities. Well it’s time to recognize you can seek help when you need it, and you should before it’s too late.

What can all this neglect lead to? Here’s some major health errors men tend to make:

    * Denying the obvious. Blood in the stool, weird rashes or moles, sudden thirstiness.
    * Denying even something as serious as a heart attack. When the signs of a heart attack appear you should immediately call 911.
    * Not getting a prostate exam because it's unpleasant. A digital rectal exam is a screening test for prostate cancer, and is recommended to be done along with a PSA blood test.
    * Not being examined for colon cancer. Most men should have a colonoscopy starting at 50 and every five to 10 years thereafter.
    * Not being aware of testosterone levels. Experts recommend getting serum testosterone blood tests in middle age.
    * Not checking yourself for testicular cancer. Strikes younger men, 15 to 35.
    * Eating an unhealthy diet. Fat intake should be maximum 10% of your diet.
    * Hiding depression. Ask for help, treatment is often very successful.
    * Smoking. Your doctor can give you a regimen to quit.

No- you don’t have to wait for something to fall off before you go to the doctor. Take these symptoms seriously and get help if you think you need it. And we wonder why men have a shorter life expectancy than women. Brush off the embarrassment and visit your doctor regularly.

Common Hearing Aid Myths

Summary:
MYTH: Hearing aids will cure hearing loss or restore a hearing impaired individual’s hearing to normal.

Keywords:
Hearing Aid

Article Body:
MYTH: Hearing aids will cure hearing loss or restore a hearing impaired individual’s hearing to normal.

TRUTH: No hearing aid will ever allow a hearing impaired individual to have normal hearing.  A hearing aid just cannot provide what the ear and its intricate working of nerves can.  What it can do is amplify sounds so that those wearing them can benefit from and enjoy a wide variety of listening situations. Hearing better helps one to respond appropriately thus improving communication skills.

MYTH: Hearing aids will resolve all of a hearing impaired individual’s communication difficulties.

TRUTH: This is impossible, although hearing aids go a long way in helping a hearing impaired individual with their communication skills.  Hearing aid wearers  often still have problems following conversations when background noise is present or in noisy public settings, thus inhibiting their ability to communicate effectively in those situations.

MYTH: Hearing aids will destroy residual hearing.

TRUTH: Since hearing aids are prescribed according to an individual wearer’s specific hearing loss, it would be a rare occurrence for a hearing aid to cause further damage to a person’s hearing.  There are several things a hearing impaired individual can do to further reduce the possibility of damage caused by hearing aids.   They must be well maintained, worn correctly and well fitted.

MYTH: Smaller hearing aids have better technology.

TRUTH: Both larger hearing aids and smaller ones are equipped with cutting edge technology.  The two most common types of hearing aids are behind the ear (BTE) and completely in the canal (CIC) hearing aids. Whether or not an individual will be able to wear a hearing aid that is nearly invisible to a casual observer, depends on the type of hearing impairment they have.  The hearing aid that is most appropriate for one person’s degree of impairment or listening needs, may not necessarily be best suited to another person.

MYTH: Hearing aids are not absolutely necessary for relatively minor hearing losses.

TRUTH: It is not advisable to put off obtaining hearing aids until hearing loss becomes a bigger problem.  Over time the risk of permanent sound distortion increases.  In this case, even when hearing aids amplify the volume of the spoken word it can still sound garbled.

MYTH: Hearing aids will not be effective for some types of hearing losses.

TRUTH: Generations ago people with certain types of hearing losses, such as high frequency, were told there was little or no help out there for them.  With advances in hearing aid technology this is no longer true.  Hearing aids are now effective for at least 95 % of hearing impaired individuals.

MYTH: Babies can’t be fitted with hearing aids.

TRUTH:  Actually infants as young as a month old can be fitted with hearing aids.  With the increase in hearing tests for at risk newborns, hearing impairments are being detected earlier then ever and the world of hearing aid research and technology is doing its best to keep pace.

MYTH: It doesn’t matter where hearing aids are purchased.

TRUTH: While buying hearing aids through mail order or off the internet may be less expensive, it is not necessarily advisable.  By purchasing through these venues, a hearing aid consumer may be giving up the quality of care they will get by working with an audiologist.  This includes things such as a qualified hearing evaluation, professional recommendations as to the most appropriate type of hearing aid, expert instruction regarding proper hearing aid usage, follow up care, etc.

The term commonly used with fat burning supplements is often thermogenics, which as the name suggests, has to do with temperature. These supplements have been shown to help increase the body's temperature enabling the body's ability to burn calories as heat; to be used as energy, thereby preventing them from being stored a fat.
Effective thermogenic supplements are those that contain key ingredients that create a fat burning 'thermogenic' environment by working together and in synergy. Some of these ingredients also aid in reducing appetite and spiking an increase in short-term energy. Such common ingredients are:
Alpha Lipoic Acid
• Prevents cellular damage (from free radicals), reduces oxidative stress, lowers blood sugar
• Increases energy levels
• Powerful insulin potentiator
Banana leaf extract
• Balances blood sugar levels
• Transports blood sugar into the cells and aids in controlling carbohydrate cravings
Cayenne
• Raises the body's metabolic rate
Citrus Aurantium
• A highly effective calorie and fat burner
• Helps to burn fat, and does not affect the central nervous system
• Increases energy levels
CLA - Conjugated Linoleic Acid
• An important fatty acid that has been shown to reduce the body's ability to store fat and increase the body's use of fat for energy.
Coleus Forskohlii
• Accelerates the breakdown of existing fat stores
• Promotes healthy cardiovascular function, lowers elevated blood pressure
• Increases levels of cellular messenger cAMP(cyclicadenosine monophosphatpe) that in turn accelerates the breakdown of existing fat stores
Garcinia Cambogia
• Promotes weight loss and suppresses appetite
• Increases fat oxidation and mobilization
• Promotes glycogen synthesis
• Increases energy levels
Guarana Extract
• When combined with other ingredients it helps to boost their effect
• Has been used for centuries to reduce fatigue and to increase energy levels
Guggul Extract
• Improves thyroid functioning
• Increases fat metabolism
Green Tea Extract
• When combined with the other ingredients it helps to boost their effect to burn fat
• Has been used for centuries to reduce fatigue and to increase energy levels lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels
Hoodia
• The Hoodia molecule, christened P57, fools your brain into believing you are full making it easier to lose that excess weight.
• Pure Hoodia has no known side-effects, it is stimulant free, will not give you the shakes, make your heart race or raise your body temperature.
Konjac root
• is high in fiber, essential for cleaning the digestive system.
• it expands to about 50 times its original volume when used with a large glass of water.
Mucana Puriens
• Improves cognitive function, alleviating depression and improving a sense of well being
• Helps to naturally boost healthy amounts of growth hormone, which promotes lean muscle growth, and in turn a faster metabolism
Naringin
• Extends the half-life of all the other fat burning ingredients, thereby supporting and extending a longer fat burning timeframe
Potassium Pyruvate
• Increases resting metabolic rate
• Facilitates the transport of blood sugar into muscle tissue to increase available energy
Spirulina
• Improves weight loss
• Lowers cholesterol
• Increases energy and boosts mood
White Willow Bark
• The bark of the white willow tree is a source of salicin and other salicylates - compounds
• When combined with the other ingredients it helps to boost their effect to burn fat

· Attention Deficit Disorder does not actually exist; it is an excuse to allow children to behave poorly and avoid discipline.
Great strides are being taken to fully understand ADD and its causes. However, there is no question it is a real disorder that is exhibited by inattention, impulsiveness, distractibility, and sometimes hyperactivity.
· All children have poor attention spans and are hyperactive; therefore children diagnosed with ADD are just like any other child.
ADD causes excessive impulsiveness, inattention, distractibility and sometimes hyperactivity; the very nature of diagnosing ADD is that the behavior is more extreme than that of other children of the same age. While most children display these behaviors at some time, it does not normally hinder their day to day activities. Children with ADD have constant problems with these behaviors impeding their productivity on a daily basis.
· Attention Deficit Disorder can be prevented through discipline or diet.
Because ADD is a biological and genetic disorder, diet and discipline are not causes. Many suggestions have been made that poor diet, fatty foods, and sugar are factors that cause the disorder; this is absolutely not the case. Likewise, lack of discipline does not cause ADD. In many cases a child with ADD has been excessively reprimanded to no avail.
· All children with ADD are hyperactive
There is a common misconception that Attention Deficit Disorder inherently means a child is hyperactive; this is not true. Many children have the predominantly inattentive type of ADD, meaning the primary characteristic is lack of attention, short attention span, and distractibility. This type does not include hyperactivity as a symptom. ADD without hyperactivity is often more difficult to identify, as the children are usually just thought to be unproductive or lazy.
· Most children outgrow ADD
Studies suggest that most children continue the symptoms of ADD throughout adolescence, and some even into adulthood. Exhibiting the same behaviors, these individuals will continue to show distractibility, difficulty in staying on task, and impulsiveness for many years.
· There is nothing parents or teachers can do to control a child with ADD
This is simply not the case. The purpose of parents and teachers in dealing with a child with ADD should be to help teach them how to control their own actions. There are various ways to do this, including behavior modification, positive reinforcement procedures, and other techniques. While traditional discipline may be less effective, measures can be taken to help control an ADD child

Common Myths and Misconceptions about Anorexia

People have many misconceptions about anorexia. Due to poor understanding of the phenomenon or due to various popular myths surrounding eating disorders, most people assimilate denatured ideas regarding anorexia and the persons it affects.

Article Body:
People have many misconceptions about anorexia. Due to poor understanding of the phenomenon or due to various popular myths surrounding eating disorders, most people assimilate denatured ideas regarding anorexia and the persons it affects.

Probably the most common misconception describes anorexia as an incurable, terrifying disease. Although anorexia can cause both physical and psychological harm, this type of eating disorder can be successfully treated and its undesirable effects can be overcome in time. In fact, through the means of an appropriate therapeutic program, the great majority of patients diagnosed with anorexia can be completely recovered from the disorder in a relatively short period of time.

Statistics indicate that more than 80 percent of people that have been confronted with anorexia at a certain point of their lives have been completely recovered with the means of psychological counseling and the help and encouragement of their families. Furthermore, most of the people affected by anorexia in the past have been able to achieve emotional balance, regaining full control over their lives. However, the truth is that anorexia needs to be timely discovered and prompt intervention is required when dealing with this type of disorder, as the affected persons can inflict themselves a lot of physical and emotional damage.

Another popular myth surrounding this type of eating disorder suggests the idea that anorexics do not eat. This idea is completely exaggerated and unfunded! Although anorexics are very restrictive with food and they indeed keep drastic diets, they are human beings after all and therefore they need to eat! In order to achieve their goal of having a slim body, anorexics usually avoid foods that are rich in calories and therefore they commonly follow vegetarian diets. Every once in a while, anorexics may also engage in binge-purge behaviors, eating exaggerated amounts of food at once, only to dispose of it right after, by vomiting or by using laxatives and diuretics. However, this behavior is more common among bulimics.

People also commonly confuse anorexia with bulimia. Although anorexia may resemble bulimia and people generally experience difficulties in separating between them, each of these two common types of eating disorders has various distinctive features. However, people with eating disorders can have oscillatory behaviors and anorexics can easily become bulimics, or vice versa.

First of all, from a physical point of view, the main difference between anorexics and bulimics is body weight. While most anorexics are underweight, bulimics often have an average or, above average body weight. Therefore, unlike the case of anorexics, it is even more difficult to identify a person who suffers from bulimia.

From a behavioral point of view, the main difference between anorexics and bulimics involves their eating habits. While anorexics commonly keep drastic diets and restrict their intake of calories, bulimics predominantly engage in binge-purge acts.

From a psychological perspective, the main difference between anorexics and bulimics is that people with anorexia have a stronger will and ambition than bulimics. While both these categories have a low self esteem and a distorted self-image, bulimics are often more likely to suffer from depression. Their contradictory, ambivalent behaviors that fluctuate between binging and purging food render them very vulnerable to developing feelings of guilt and confusion.
