Pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, zits - whatever you call them, they're one of the main symptoms of acne, a disorder that affects the oil glands in your skin and causes eruptions and lesions that can affect your appearance and your self-confidence.
If you have acne, you're not alone. An estimated $100 million will be spent this year by people looking for an acne treatment that really works. A major portion of that amount will pay for over the counter acne treatment cremes, lotions, soaps and ointments. Another major portion will pay for consultations with dermatologists (skin doctors) and prescription medications to help control or treat acne. The remainder will be spent on nutritional supplements and oral medications that may have an effect on acne.
Because acne is a complex condition that may have any one (or several) of many different causes, choosing an acne treatment that works for you isn't always easy. A dermatologist can help determine what kind of acne you have, and prescribe the best choices of acne treatment for your particular skin type and acne problem. Dermatologists can be helpful even in mild cases of acne, because a course of treatment that works to clear up acne in one person may actually worsen the condition in another.
When you see a dermatologist, he may prescribe an acne treatment with either vitamin A (retinol) or benzoyl peroxide. These two ingredients have been proven effective in reducing the effects of acne in multiple laboratory and human tests. They each work in different ways to help control existing acne lesions and prevent more.
Retinol is the form of vitamin A most often used as an acne treatment. When it's applied to the skin, it's a mild irritant that encourages your body to shed old cells and generate new ones. It works on the same principle as many forms of acne treatment that use dermabrasion or laser to exoliate and encourage new skin cells.
Benzoyl peroxide is available in over the counter and prescription strengths. Unlike vitamin A, which encourages a change in the skin itself, benzoyl peroxide helps prevent infection by killing off bacteria on your skin and in your skin cells. While dirt doesn't actually cause acne, bacteria can worsen the condition by causing infection.
Many dermatologist now combine both retinol and benzoyl peroxide when treating acne. Most often, they'll prescribe one acne treatment to be used in the morning and the other at night. In additio

Acne Treatments: The Cheap Option Or The Potent Stuff?

Summary:
Acne is one of those problems that everyone has to deal with sooner or later. The question of whether to pick the cheaper over-the-counter treatment over the more potent prescription medication can sometimes be a difficult choice. Both have advantages and disadvantages that must be considered.

Keywords:
skin infections, side effects, drug interaction

Article Body:
If you scour the shelves of a pharmacy or drug store, you'll most likely find numerous brands of over-the-counter treatment for acne more than you can count with your fingers. among other skin infections,There are likely to be ingredients common to said treatments for skin infections, though none are exactly the same. If the problem is something that your typical medication can handle, it is probably best you consult a skin care professional.

In most cases, these readily available measures achieve the simple goal of alleviating your acne problem without causing any discomfort. Of course, given individual reactions to the chemicals in the skin treatments, that may not always be the case. Prescription medication, which is typically more potent, may also cause the same unwanted side-effects as those that come from over-the-counter products.

Various factors influence the effectiveness of an over-the-counter or prescription acne treatment product. You might be inclined to wonder which of the two would be the best acne medication, with minimal possible side effects. Well, the answer to this is that all medications can potentially cause side effects. Every person's skin will react differently to different drugs or medications.

Let's take a look at this whole thing objectively, shall we? Or at least, with as much objectivity a single person can have. Hopefully, if we do that we can find the best acne medication, or at least something close to it.  In theory, there may be no such thing as a “best” medication, as individual skin chemistry can easily get in the way.

First off, over-the-counter medication for your average range of skin infections, let alone acne, is nowhere near as potent as your typical prescription treatment. This may stem from either the differences in the basic chemical composition or how concentrated the key ingredients of the treatments are. A prescription acne treatment may clear up the problem faster, but the potency of the chemicals can cause side effects more readily than the over-the-counter variants. That means that your life can get back to normal a lot faster, seeing as how you've got one less thing to worry about.

However, despite being “less effective” (and that's something that's just this side of being arguable), over-the-counter stuff is significantly cheaper. Unless you've somehow gotten a case of monumentally bad acne, you should go and try an over-the-counter treatment first. They may not be as potent, but they very often can do the job on their own. If they're not helping, you shouldn't hesitate to seek professional help. Medical insurance may or many not entirely cover your costs, as this sort of thing is something that varies depending on the details of your coverage.

The lower potency of the drugs can also be a boon rather than a bane, for some people. You see, every once in a while, the combination of skin, acne, and other factors is going to produce a person with very sensitive skin. The kind of skin that turns red and swells to the size of a grapefruit at the slightest touch of benzoyl peroxide, or something similar. However, lower chemical potency means that you're also less likely to run into a nasty side effect.

There's also the matter of convenience to be considered here. An over-the-counter product is obviously easier to get your hands on. Go to a drug store, find medication for acne that you like or think would work, and pay for it at the counter. Simple, clean, and there's not a whole lot of time involved. In contrast, if you need to get one that's prescription-required, that involves the time to set up the appointment, the consultation, and all that other good stuff.

There's also the matter of an individual's skin. Your skin is unique and how it might react to something is different from how someone else's skin might react. Your skin may be tougher than most, or it can be easier to scar than most. Medications are set to a specific formula when they're made.

Finally, you may want to keep in mind not to mix and match your treatments. Drug interaction is a leading cause of side effects, aside from poor interaction with the patient's skin. Skin infections like acne can be made worse if you mix two treatments together, such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. The warning about drug interaction holds true even when you mix together over-the-counter medication and prescription ones, even if the two have ingredients in common.

There are two main ways brain injury can occur, insidious onset (tumors, neurological diseases, and substance and alcohol abuse) or outside onset (infection, lack of oxygen, trauma, and strokes). Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is brain damage suffered after birth.

The main causes of ABI include disease (AIDS, Alzheimer, cancer, Parkinson or sclerosis), alcohol or drugs, prolonged lack of oxygen, physical trauma (such as those suffered in car accidents or fighting sports) and strokes (the breaking of a blood vessel causing brain tissue destruction).

Acquired brain injury affects patients in numerous ways. Many patients experience mental and physical fatigue, visual dysfunction and slowed mental processes such as problem solving or planning.  Personality and behavior modifications can also appear, with some people even becoming a threat to society.

It is published that 1.5 to 2 million Americans suffer a brain injury each year, mainly due to falls, acts of violence, sports injuries, and, most frequently, motor vehicles accidents. The even more disturbing news is that 2.5 to 6.5 million Americans are living with ABI. The good news is that thanks to evolutions in medical care, more people are surviving brain injury every year.

Acquired brain injury is a serious matter.  ABI can result in an incredible life change for the suffering party, family disruption, loss of income or earning potential, and expenses resulting from the victim’s lifelong need for support. There are several institutions that offer care for ABI patients, and doctors can diagnose and treat many ABIs, so it is vital that people suffering a head injury get medical attention to prevent or cure symptoms.

The ACMS – American College of Sports Medicine – was the among the first organizations that, supported, commended, the United States House of Representatives for passing legislation, and urged the American Senate to pass the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004 to curb the steroid abuse in sports.
The Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004 came as a great blow to steroid abuse in the United States. The legislation prohibits free over-the-counter sales of anabolic steroids. It requires a person buying steroids to have a prescription from a recognized physician. The legislation also does effectively reclassify anabolic steroids as controlled substances, and under the federal law, controlled substances are the most highly regulated drugs in the USA.

The previous law, that considered anabolic steroids as supplements, had many loopholes for steroid abuse.
Gary Wadler, M.D., an ACSM sports medicine doctor and member of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), said, “This potentially closes a very large loophole that exists under current law, thereby protecting the health of professional elite athletes as well as recreational and student athletes.”

The American College of Sports Medicine has always been fighting steroid abuse in the United States. It has always been against the steroid abuse and the use of on performance enhancing substances, particularly anabolic steroids, because of their adverse health effects.
The ACMS has always been supporting the efforts to suppress steroid abuse and protecting the health of athletes.

According to the experts associated with ACMS, steroid abuse is like chain reaction that goes on and on. The collegiate athletes abuse steroids just because pros do that; the juniors copy their seniors in steroid abuse, and resultantly the kids as young as 10 years of age indulge in steroid abuse. Thus, the authorities should control the steroid abuse among the pros first; it will consequently minimize the steroid abuse among the collegiate athletes who mere copy their pro stars.

The pros and coaches can play very positive role in keep back steroid abuse among the teenagers. The pros should try to be the role models of youngsters, and coaches and help young jocks to develop positive frame of mind.

Actin is a ubiquitous protein involved in the formation of filaments that are major components of the cytoskeleton. It is the monomeric subunit of microfilaments, one of the three major components of the cytoskeleton, and of thin filaments which are part of the contractile apparatus in muscle cells. It is the most abundant protein in the typical eukaryotic cell, accounting for about 15% in some cell types.  The protein is highly conserved, and forms a huge variety of structure in cells in concert with a huge numbers of actin binding proteins. The actin filaments interact with myosin to produce a sliding effect, which is the basis of muscular contraction and many aspects of cell motility, including cytokinesis. The individual subunits of actin are known as globular actin (G-actin) that assembles into long filamentous polymers called F-actin. Two parallel F-actin strands twist around each other in a helical formation, giving rise to microfilaments of the cytoskeleton. Microfilaments measure approximately 7 nm in diameter with a loop of the helix repeating every 37nm. Each actin protomer binds one molecule of ATP and has one high affinity site for either calcium or magnesium ions, as well as several low affinity sites. It exists as a monomer in low salt concentrations, but filaments form rapidly as salt concentration rises, with the consequent hydrolysis of ATP. Actin from many sources forms a tight complex with deoxyribonuclease (DNase I) although the significance of this is still unknown. The formation of this complex results in the inhibition of DNase I activity, and actin loses its ability to polymerise. It has been shown that an ATPase domain of actin shares similarity with ATPase domains of hexokinase and hsp70 proteins. In vertebrates there are three groups of actin isoforms: alpha, beta and gamma. The alpha actins are found in muscle tissues and are a major constituent of the contractile apparatus. The beta and gamma actins co-exist in most cell types as components of the cytoskeleton and as mediators of internal cell motility. MreB, a major component of the bacterial cytoskeleton, exhibits high structural homology to its eukaryotic counterpart actin. Further it has been suggested that members of the Rho family of small guanosine triphosphatases have emerged as key regulators of the actin cytoskeleton, and through their interaction with multiple target proteins, they ensure coordinated control of other cellular activities such as gene transcription and adhesion.

ACTION OF ALCOHOL ON INTERNAL ORGANS.

Action on the stomach.
----------------------

The action of alcohol on the stomach is extremely dangerous that it becomes unable to produce the natural digestive fluid in sufficient quantity and also fails to absorb the food which it may imperfectly digest. A condition marked by the sense of nausea emptiness, prostration and distention will always be faced by an alcoholic. This results in  a loathing for food and is teased with a craving for more drink. Thus there is engendered a permanent disorder which is called dyspepsia. The disastrous forms of confirmed indigestion originate by this practice.

How the liver gets affected.
----------------------------

The organic deteriorations caused by the continued use of alcohol are often of a fatal character. The organ which most frequently undergoes structural changes from alcohol, is the liver. Normally, the liver has the capacity to hold active substances in its cellular parts. In instances of poisoning by various poisonous compounds, we analyse liver as if it were the central depot of the foreign matter. It is practically the same in respect to alcohol. The liver of an alcoholic is never free from the influence of alcohol and it is too often saturated with it. The minute membranous or capsular structure of the liver gets affected, preventing proper dialysis and free secretion. The liver becomes large due to the dilatation of its vessels, the surcharge of fluid matter and the thickening of tissue. This follows contraction of membrane and shrinking of the whole  organ in its cellular parts. Then the lower parts of the alcoholic becomes dropsical owing to the obstruction offered to the returning blood by the veins. The structure of the liver may be charged with fatty cells and undergo what is technically designated 'fatty liver'.

How the Kidneys deteriorate.
----------------------------

The Kidneys also suffer due to the excessive consumption of alcohol. The vessels of Kidneys  lose elasticity and power of contraction. The minute structures in them go through fatty modification. Albumin from the blood easily passes through their membranes. This results in the body losing its power as if it were being run out of blood gradually.

Congestion of the lungs.
------------------------

Alcohol relaxes the vessels of the lungs easily as they are most exposed to the fluctuations of heat and cold. When subjected to the effects of a rapid variation in atmospheric temperature, they get readily congested. During severe winter seasons, the suddenly fatal congestions of lungs easily affects an alcoholic.

Alcohol weakens the heart.
--------------------------

Consumption of alcohol greatly affects the heart. The quality of the membraneous structures which cover and line the heart changes and are thickened, become cartilaginous or calcareous. Then the valves lose their suppleness and what is termed valvular disorder becomes permanent.  The structure of the the coats of the great blood-vessel leading from the heart share in the same changes of structure so that the vessel loses its  elasticity and its power to feed the heart by the recoil from its distention,  after the heart, by its stroke, has filled it with blood.

Again, the muscular structure of the heart fails owing to degenerative changes in its tissue. The elements of the muscular fibre are replaced by fatty cells or, if not so replaced, are themselves transferred into a modified muscular texture in which the power of contraction is greatly reduced.

Those who suffer from these organic deteriorations of the central and governing organ of the circulation of the blood learn the fact so insidiously, it hardly breaks upon them until the mischief is far advanced. They are conscious of a central failure of power from slight causes such as overexertion, trouble, broken rest or too long abstinence from food. They feel what they call a 'sinking' but they know that wine or some other stimulant will at once relieve the sensation. Thus they seek to relieve it until at last they discover that the remedy fails. The jaded, overworked, faithful heart will bear no more. it has run its course and the governor of the blood-streams broken. The current either overflows into the tissues gradually damming up the courses or under some slight shock or excess of motion ceases wholly at the centre.

article:

Stress is such a commonly used word, but what does it really mean? How does stress affect us and what can we do about it? Stress can be the cause of so many health conditions, lost days of work, irritability with those we love, and general unhappiness. Certain herbs, vitamins, minerals and techniques can help calm your body so you are better able to deal with the stresses that come your way.
Some of the more common symptoms of stress are: fatique, headaches, irritability, stomach aches, heartburn, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, cramping, indigestion, insomnia, food reactions, hives, weight gain, weight loss, and lowered immune function. Stress can effect any one in any part of the body as we all deal with life differently; we all hold our stress in different parts of our body.
Some supplements that can be useful for stress are: The B vitamins (B complex), vitamin C, Calcium-Magnesium, and EFA’s (essential fatty acids). EFA’s are oils like, flax, fish and 3-6-9 oil; they are the "good fats". Many essential nutrients are depleted when we are stressed, especially Magnesium. This mineral helps to calm the muscles and nerves, making you less jumpy, less quick to anger, while reducing cramping and chocolate cravings. There are many great herbs you can take for stress: St John’s Wort, Kava Kava, 5-HTP and more; do not take any of these three if on an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication. Homeopathic remedies can also work well. Remedies such as, Calms Forte, Rescue Remedy by Bach Flower are good for calming during a crisis; Coffea Cruda works to help shut off your mind so you can sleep.
There are many techniques we can use for stress: deep breathing, time out, counting, walking, a hobby, talking to a friend, exercise, watching a funny movie, dancing, singing and meditation. Deep breathing is practiced by expanding the whole torso while breathing in, filling the lungs with air, and then releasing it slowly. Take a class or read a book to help learn a hobby, meditation or an attitude change. Learn to release anger in a healthy productive way. Get a pet. Spending time with a pet has been shown to lower blood pressure, increase immune and a sense of well being. A cat’s purring is on the right decibel for healing, yet we still don’t understand how they purr.
Watch your diet. Too much caffeine, sugar and white flour products (which immediately turn to sugar in the body) can make you tense and irritable. Going without food for hours causes your blood sugar to drop, making you light headed, nauseous and irritable. Eat more fruits, veggies, whole grains, efa’s and good quality proteins. Drink more pure water.
Our genetics determine the form of disease and what part of the body is affected. Diet, and the amount of stress and how we let that stress affect us, determines whether we develop that disease. If we cannot change the stress, we have to learn how to live with it. You can learn to be happy while dealing with the everyday stress of life.

"We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action." - by Frank Tibolt
This is a very important quote that we carefully selected because.....let's face it.....it's hard to find the motivation to exercise! The temperature is either too hot or too cold, and it's easy to just let the workout slide.
But there's the danger! It's sooooo tempting to just skip the workout for today and perhaps wait for inspiration to strike us at home. Maybe some of these excuses sound familiar: "It's too hot right now - I'll go exercise tonight" or "I just don't feel like doing anything today - I'll work out twice as long tomorrow". Of course, the workout doesn't happen tonight and tomorrow we find a new reason not to exercise.
Please understand that we're not 'pointing the finger' here! We're in the same boat right along with you!
But let's read that quote again: "We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action." - by Frank Tibolt.
How do we find the motivation to exercise today? WE JUST DO IT. I know that sounds like a Nike commercial, but really, it's the truth. Just doing it (exercising) will give us the inspiration to do it again tomorrow. The action creates the inspiration!
Did you ever find yourself with a lot of housework to do, and you were absolutely NOT looking forward to it? Yet, once you started cleaning, you kind of 'got into it' and ended up putting in a lot of time and effort. The house looked GREAT! The action created the inspiration!
Did you ever have a HUGE project at work that needed to get done? Chances are, it was a real nightmare of a task. Yet, once you really started on the project, you ended up working on it until midnight! Again, the action created the inspiration!
Exercise is the same way. Sometimes we don't look forward to working out. Sometimes it's a chore. Yet, once we start, it feels so good that we give it 110%!
That's our secret for exercise motivation. Don't wait until you feel like exercising, because you'll probably NEVER feel like it. JUST DO IT. The action of working out will create the inspiration you need to exercise tomorrow......and the day after.
Now, let's read that quote just more time....."We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action." - by Frank Tibolt
Now let's go do it!

The ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture has proven to be an effective treatment for tension headache. It not only relieves pain, but also cuts rates of recurrence by almost half, a recent study indicates.
Traditional Chinese acupuncture therapy involves insertion of needles up to 3 inches deep into the body at prescribed acupuncture points, according to licensed acupuncturist Rong Zeng of the New York Good Health Clinic in Manhattan.
However, a new, randomized blind study in Germany involving 270 patients with a similar severity of tension headache has shown that a minimal course of acupuncture works almost as well as the traditional method.
Fewer Headaches After Treatment
Researchers divided the patients into three groups. Over an eight-week period, one group was treated with traditional acupuncture, another received minimal acupuncture (needles inserted only superficially into the skin at non-acupuncture points), and the control group had neither treatment.
The subjects were monitored for four weeks after their period of treatment. Those who had received traditional acupuncture care subsequently experienced seven fewer headaches. The group that had been given minimal acupuncture therapy had surprisingly similar results -- 6.6 fewer headaches.
The control group did not fare as well, with only 1.5 fewer headaches.
Improvements in headache rates continued for months after the acupuncture treatment, though they began to rise slightly as time went on.
Results Subject to Interpretation
Such a negligable difference in results between traditional and minimal acupuncture treatments possibly indicates that the location of acupuncture points and depth of needle insertion do not make a major difference for treatment of tension headache, the authors of the study suggest.
However, they caution that the possibility of placebo effects should not be overlooked.
"Placebo effect is a factor in all types of medicine," Dr. Zeng noted. In western medicine, for example, blind tests may reveal placebo effects that are similar to responses to trial drugs, she explained.
In any case, it is clear that the patients who received acupuncture treatment experienced fewer headaches. The possibility that placebo effect plays a role in acupuncture does not detract from its efficacy.

There are many different types of acne treatments available, and one that tends to go unnoticed is acupuncture treatment. Results can be varying when undergoing acupuncture treatment though.
Many studies have been done on the subject, and the basic results seem to show that when acupuncture treatment is used, the best results are obtained when it is combined with another type of acne treatment.
For instance, many studies have shown their highest success of acupuncture treatment for acne to be in those patients who also made lifestyle and diet changes, as well.
There are many different reasons a doctor may recommend acupuncture treatment. Some patients can't, or don't want to, take medications. Some patients do not like the idea of undergoing surgery or laser treatment.
In many of these cases, the doctor will look to acupuncture as an alternative. When they recommend this, they may have to send the patient to another doctor, or they may be licensed to perform this treatment themselves.
If acupuncture treatment is performed, it will involve electro acupuncture or auricular acupuncture. Auricular acupuncture is acupuncture applied to the ear.
The only problem with evaluating whether acupuncture treatment is generally a successful or not, is that there are far too few structured studies to average results from.
From the few studies done, acupuncture treatment has been shown to have positive results in reducing the symptoms of acne.
While it may not be guaranteed to work, the benefit of trying acupuncture, as opposed to topical creams, ingestible medicines, or surgery, is that rarely will there be any negative side effects.
The two minor drawbacks to acupuncture treatment for acne are that it can be costly (with no guarantee) and that some people fear the pain or general usage of needles.

title:Acupuncture Weight Loss - Fact or Fantasy?

article:

I remember back in my senior year of high school - my best friend since 5th grade was living in France. He wrote that they didn't like Americans much. "They think we're all fat," he said. With his own skinny frame, of course, he confounded their belief.
But, he added a funny, or perhaps ironic capstone to the issue. "I went to a store, and they were selling statues of these fat people, and, at the base of each one was written, 'American.'"
Obesity is not only an American problem. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it's a global problem. They call it globesity. Parodoxically, their understanding of this problem began with their original mission to eliminate hunger and malnutrition. We live in a world where many have nothing to eat, and many eat too much. From 1995 to 2000, the number of obese adults worldwide mushroomed from 200 million to 300 million. That's a 50% increase in just 5 years!
What is Obesity, and What is Overweight?
Overweight means an excess of body weight. This excess weight may be muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Obesity refers specifically to an abnormally high proportion of body fat. You can be overweight without being obese - for example, a bodybuilder or other highly-muscled athlete. But many people who are overweight are also obese. The main way to determine whether you are overweight or obese is with the body mass index (BMI). It doesn't directly measure body fat, and it's not gender specific, but it does give you a pretty reliable estimation.
To find your BMI, divide your weight (in kilograms) by your height in meters squared. Yep, for the math-challenged, that's complex, so I'll give you a website that will figure it out for you, the National Institute's of Health BMI calculator (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/). This will very quickly tell you if you are normal, overweight, or obese, and it does all the calculating and metric conversions for you!
Overweight is defined as a BMI above 25 (including those above 30 BMI, too), and obese is a BMI above 30. So, all obese people are overweight, but not all overweight people are obese.
The Obesity Epidemic
Obesity isn't just about not feeling good or having trouble getting dates…

It leads to more than 300,000 premature deaths each year in the United States. 90,000 are preventable cancer deaths. (CDC)
Severely obese men die 13 years sooner than men of normal weight (JAMA).
As a killer in America, obesity is second only to tobacco. (CDC)

The Weight Loss Industry

Spending: Americans spend between $40-50 billion per year to lose weight.
Results: I haven't seen any recent news that Americans are getting any thinner - have you?
Conclusion: What people are doing isn't working. If we want different results, we have to try a different solution.

Acupuncture Weight Loss: Fantasy, or Fact?

Fantasy or Fact? As a well-trained and fairly conservative Chinese medicine practitioner, I had assumed that acupuncture for weight loss was a marketing fad and a patient fantasy.
Evidence: But while researching my upcoming book Chinese Medicine: A Practical Guide to Optimal Healing, I found some surprisingly positive information that changed my mind.

Chinese Medicine's Collective Clinical Data on Acupuncture Weight Loss
Chinese Medicine has thousands of years of clinical experience. This collective data not as convincing as randomized controlled trials are, but it does contain truth - it's imperfect but still valid and important.
A U.S. government study in the 80's concluded that 85% of western medicine is based on clinical experience, not on research. (Office of Technology Assessment of the Congress of the United States, The Impact of Randomized Controlled Trials on Health Policy and Medical Practice, Background Paper OTA-BP-H-22. Also see Michael Millenson's book, Demanding Medical Excellence)
There is good Chinese Medicine research in Taiwan, Australia, and Europe that gets ignored by American scientists and media. Much research in Chinese has not even been translated into English.
Seven Studies of Acupuncture for Weight Loss
How it works: By enhancing the function of two neuroendocrine pathways that regulate many bodily processes, including metabolism.
What it does:

Lowers body weight, body fat, insulin levels, and lipid levels in the blood
Decreases excessive appetite and makes it easier to satisfy your hunger with less food.
Decreases menopausal weight gain
In one study, acupuncture took off 10 pounds in 2 months - that translates to 60 lbs in a year!
Combined with diet control, and aerobic counseling it not only takes off the pounds and body fat, but keeps them off, especially if you're diligent with their exercise.

(See references at end of article for the research)
Ephedra misuse and mislegislation
Ephedra is a Chinese herb for colds and coughs. It has been misused to increase metabolism, and this misuse has caused numerous deaths. As a result, the FDA is considering a total ban on ephedra products. We can blame two major things:

Supplement companies that care more about your money than your health (no, not all of them are that way, but some of them are, especially the ones that market weight loss formulations).
The idea that you can medicate yourself safely with herbs - self-medication of any kind is risky. Self-medication with herbs is off the radar, and people generally think they can do it safely. The ephedra debacle is an example of how dangerous it can be.

Traditionally, Chinese herbs are given in formulas (not singly), which is safer and more personalized. They're prescribed by a Chinese medicine practitioner who diagnoses your specific imbalances first. Ephedra would never be given for weight loss, but only for certain kinds of colds and coughs, and only to people whose body's can handle it.
No traditional Chinese herbs should be outlawed without allowing Chinese medical practitioners to continue to use them traditionally.
Food Cravings

Problem #1 (Enzyme Deficiency): The foods you crave depending on your personal imbalances. Modern digestive science explains that when your body can't digest a food, you crave more of it - you're not getting what you need from it. This lead to a cycle of craving and overeating the exact food you can't digest.
Problem #2 (Low Blood Sugar): Another vicious cycle happens when you can't digest complex carbs, so your blood sugar is low, so you eat simple carbs that raise your blood sugar which raises insulin, which lowers your blood sugar again, and your stuck eating donuts and feeling horrible.
Solution: Enzymes (I recommend various enzyme formulations from a company called Transformations) and Chinese herbal formulas can help you digest your food and break both of these cycles

Weight can be lost safely if done slowly and naturally.
You can lose up to 2 lbs per week without gaining it back. That means you could lose 104 lbs this year and keep it off!
Positive change is like stretching a rubber band- if you stretch too far too fast, it breaks or snaps back on you.
So avoid the temptation to take an easy solution like ephedra or citrus aurantium (both misused Chinese herbs), because you'll gain the weight back, and you're risking heart problems and stroke.
5 Things to Do Right Now
To Lose 10 Pounds Within 2 Months
And Keep Them Off:

Avoid heavily marketed supplements - instead, see a professional trained herbalist (acupuncturist) - it's safer and more effective - my preference would be a Chinese medicine practitioner, but some very well-educated western herbalists are good too.
Acupuncture Weight Loss: See an acupuncturist/chinese herbalist - Get acupuncture (once to three times per week) to SAFELY regulate your metabolism and hunger-satisfaction. Your acupuncturist can also get you the herbs that will balance your digestion and cravings - and based on your Chinese pattern diagnosis, they can also give you personalized diet advice. Herbs and enzymes (specific formulations from the enzyme company, Transformations) can eliminate your food cravings.
Develop a plan and goals with your acupuncturist and aerobics instructor- make it realistic, and stick to it. If you mess up, don't beat yourself up, just get back on track as soon as you can. Any progress is better than none at all.
Eat less, exercise more - Eat a low fat diet, and don't miss breakfast! Weigh yourself regularly, and exercise an hour a day. Start by walking a few minutes each day, or take the stairs at work. Don't overdo it! Remember the rubber band. In fact, you may want to wear a rubber band on your wrist to remind yourself to make changes slowly. Get some aerobic exercise help- a public class, or private aerobic counseling.
Join a support group like Weight Watchers or Overeaters Anonymous. There's nothing like positive friends to encourage you and keep you on track. OA members say that this spiritual program of action has changed the way they relate to food.

Acupuncture: Ancient Chinese Healing Method for Stress and Disease

Article Body:
Acupuncture, as an alternative medical practice, is now making headway in the Western world. It is now accepted as a drug-free treatment and method of stress relief.  Practiced in China for more than 2,000 years, acupuncture is a therapeutic system that makes use of sterilized needles for the purpose of restoring the body’s equilibrium.  The needles are inserted on specific vital points that correspond to a specific internal organ.  The light insertion of the needle into a vital point is supposed to free the flow of internal energy or “chi.”   According to Chinese medical theory, any blockage in the flow of chi in the body’s “energy streams” or meridians can an imbalance in the body --- resulting to an illness.  The natural flow of chi ensures a person's general state of health. The focus of acupuncture is on restoring harmony in the flow of the chi throughout the body and, in the process, balancing the metaphysical concepts of yin and yang.

Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of ailments such as nausea, sinusitis, migraine headaches, lower back pain, knee pain, and chronic pain. Ancient Chinese texts also claim that the acupuncture can be used to treat minor mental and emotional problem such as anxiety disorder.  For this reason, some even compare the Traditional Chinese Medicine method of acupuncture to the Western medical discipline of psychology.  Both are seen as similar disciplines or therapy methods that have a positive effect on the mental health of patients.

The true benefits of acupuncture are found in its efficacy as a non-invasive, drug-free means of alleviating a number of physical ailments. It is also used in conjunction with traditional Chinese herbal cures that are perceived to be as effective as modern pills and medication. Acupuncture is concerned not only with providing cure to specific ailments. It is also used to determine the causes of physical discomforts and illnesses. Acupuncture practitioners make use of body charts that show the meridians or channels where internal energy flows to different parts of the body. These meridians correspond to the Western medicine layout of the central nervous system and circulatory system.

Studies are still being made by Western doctors and other scientists to determine the efficacy of this Eastern alternative form of healing. Even if acupuncture already accepted in different parts of the world as an alternative healing method, some quarters are still skeptical about its long-term effects.

While there are still no research findings that make the curative claims about acupuncture absolutely undisputable, it is interesting to note the depth of understanding that the Chinese had about the inner workings of the human body thousands of years before the formal organization and practice of Western medicine.  Perhaps, one day, scientists will finally prove that the differences between Eastern and Western medicine is found mostly in culture and terminology; and that both systems are actually alike in terms of philosophy and theory in the use of the needle as a tool for healing.

Acupuncture, Is It A Safe Alternative?

Summary:
This article is about acupuncture as an alternative pain relief method.  Although its popularity is mainly in Asian countries, the procedure is slowly building up a following in western countries.  Although proven effective, practitioners are unable to offer a concrete explanation as to how acupuncture is able to alleviate pain.  It is generally risk-free, its only risk factor being the practitioner.  If the practitioner makes the mistake of inserting the needle into the wrong place, it will cause a lot of problems

Article Body:
Among Asian countries, acupuncture is a very popular alternative pain relief means.  It has been slowly gaining a following in western countries.  Although there is a lack of scientific evidence to explain the efficacy of this treatment, people in the medical field are suggesting this form of treatment to their patients..

Acupuncture is an ancient Asian medicinal art devised 5,000 years ago that involves the use of thin, cylindrical needles that are inserted into specific portions of the body called acupuncture points.  Acupuncture points are said to be scattered all over the body and corresponds to different parts of the body.  The aim of using acupuncture is to restore health and well-being.  Acupuncture is also said to reduce pain and/or induce anesthesia.

Licensed acupuncturists explain that when the needle is inserted into an acupuncture point, there is an increase in blood flow to the area.  Meridians along the acupuncture points in the body are stimulated as the blood flows around the body.  Acupuncture has been proven effective for a number of ailments including: nausea, chronic pain especially in the lower back area, neck pain and headaches.  However,  acupuncturists are unsure as to how this helps alleviate pain, they find that when they insert needles in certain acupuncture points, the pain goes away.  It is because of this lack of explanation that some health professionals raise eyebrows on this form of alternative pain relief method.

There are several ways that acupuncture works to reduce chronic pain. One is to work through the meridians, and increase certain energy centers in the body. As an example, if someone has chronic pain, we would want to stimulate the kidney centres in the body; kidney meridians. If someone has a specific musculoskeletal pain, let's say just a spot in the shoulder, we may want to inject just a couple of needles touching each other, and use electrostimulation to reduce inflammation in that area.

Acupuncture is a generally safe treatment to administer to a patient's body.  It has a very low risk profile and a particularly high success rate.  However, the biggest risk factor lies on the person performing the procedure.  The acupuncture practitioner must be well-trained and licensed to work on 1a patient.  They must know where the acupuncture points are in order to know where the needles should be strategically inserted.  If an untrained person inserts a needle into the spinal cord, or the lungs, there is bound to be a problem to come up.

Unlike other pain reduction and pain management treatments, acupuncture is fairly non-invasive and non-habit forming.  It requires no prescription medications which may cause dependence if used continuously in high doses.  Unlike surgery, you don't have to be cut open during the procedure, and bleeding is very minimal.  Not only does it alleviate pain, it also increases the body's energy level by stimulating the meridian points.  It brings the body into homeostasis and allows people to feel better with very little to no pain at all.

Acupuncture: Still The Sharp Choice Alternative Pain Relief Method

Summary:
Acupuncture has become one of the most popular and accepted unconventional therapies used in the United States. This method is already a popular and widely accepted alternative pain relief method. This article tackles the various effects of the method and discusses the proof that it is an effective and safe alternative treatment.

Keywords:
 alternative pain relief

Article Body:
The ancient Chinese alternative healing method called Acupuncture is now a popular and widely accepted alternative pain relief method in the United States. An estimated 15 million Americans have tried this “unconventional” therapy. It is offered in many chronic pain clinics and is covered by some insurers and managed health organizations. The Chinese therapy of acupuncture has been used for millions of years to treat a range of ailments. Now it looks like Western medicine is getting the point. The intent of acupuncture therapy is to promote health and alleviate pain and suffering. The method by which this is accomplished, though it may seem strange and mysterious to many, has been tested over thousands of years and continues to be validated today.
The perspective from which an acupuncturist views health and sickness hinges on concepts of “vital energy,” “energy balance” and “energy imbalance.” Just as the Western medical doctor monitors the blood flowing through blood vessels and the messages traveling via the nervous system, the acupuncturist assesses the flow and distribution of this “vital energy” within its pathways, known as “meridians and channels.”
The World Health Organization recommends acupuncture as an alternative pain relief for more than 40 conditions as diverse as asthma and chronic pain. The Food and Drug Administration regulates acupuncture needles as medical devices, the same as it does surgical tools. And in 1997, a National Institutes of Health panel found acupuncture to be an acceptable treatment for many pain conditions, including fibromyalgia and general musculoskeletal pain.
Modern studies have revealed that acupuncture stimulates one or more of the signaling systems, which under certain circumstances, can increase the rate of healing response. This may be sufficient to cure a disease, or it might only reduce its impact (alleviate some symptoms). These findings can explain most of the clinical effects of acupuncture therapy.
It is also no surprise that some rheumatologists recommend acupuncture to be used alongside more conventional treatments. There are a few patients who even perform the acupuncture treatments on themselves.
When performed by a properly trained and licensed practitioner, acupuncture is safe and effective, free from adverse or addictive side effects. Quite often, a sense of relaxation and well-being occurs during and after treatments. While undergoing therapy for one ailment, other problems may resolve concurrently. This is a common side benefit that again demonstrates the value of balancing the quality and quantity of “vital energy” within the entire person.
Licensed acupuncturists know the human anatomy well, and insert needles in a safe fashion. The instruments used to penetrate the skin are either pre-sterilized and disposable after a single use, or disinfected and sterilized in an autoclave, as surgical and dental instruments are, after each use.
Although most evidence supporting acupuncture can be dismissed as anecdotal, trials have been done where acupuncture does show a pain relieving effect above placebo. The effect is not large, of the same magnitude as taking Aspirin or Ibuprofen, but nonetheless it's there and cannot be ignored.

Acupuncture: The Alternative Medicine From The Orient

What you should know about acupuncture, the alternative medicine which proves to be beneficial.

acupuncture, migraine headahces, low back pain

Article Body:
For Mrs. Cooper, life in sunny California in her modest home has become a tug-of-war of aches and pains for this housewife of forty. A mother of five and at the same time managing a home business, she found it very challenging to keep a home and manage a business at the same time while suffering from lower back pains and migraine headaches.  She tried using the traditional medicines prescribed by her doctor but it seems that these only provided temporary relief. One day, her cousin Meredith recommended that she try other alternative medicines to cure her ailments.

At first, Mrs. Cooper was skeptical since she knew that Meredith was into new age stuff like meditation, yoga, organics, herbal medicines, and vegetarianism.  She felt she was entering into new, unfamiliar territory. But upon her cousin's insistence, she tried this ancient Chinese practice called acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a procedure that treats illness through the insertion of needles at specific points in the body. This process is said to alter the body's energy flow into healthier patterns and used to treat a variety of illnesses and heath conditions. According to the World Health Organization (who) acupuncture is an effective treatment for “over forty” medical problems such as chronic pain, headaches and those associated with problems like back injuries and arthritis. But it is limited in treating conditions like broken bones or that requires surgery.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?

Just make sure you’re getting this treatment from a well-trained acupuncturist and that the acupuncture needles are sterile and disposable. Undergoing this kind of treatment is like receiving an injection. You only feel pain from injections if it is larger diameter and it is a hollow needle. While acupuncture needles are very fine and about the diameter of human hair. When properly inserted by a skilled practitioner, you won't feel pain. However, you may experience a sense of electricity in the area of insertion. This kind of treatment for most patients find it relaxing and more often they fall asleep during treatment.

THE BASIC PHILOSOPHY OF CHINESE MEDICINE

Alternative Chinese medicine like acupuncture views the body as tiny part of the universe, and subject to universal laws of harmony and balance. The Chinese believe that emotions and mental states play a role in causing diseases.  Illnesses are also affected by other factors like the environment, lifestyle, and relationships. Acupuncture is based on the Taoist philosophy of yin and yang and the chi. The chi, or cosmic energy, is an invisible force found in the air, water, food and sunlight. In the body, it is a vital force that creates and animates life.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN VISITING ACUPUNCTURIST

Like a Western medical practitioner, the first thing an acupuncturist will do is to get the patient's medical history and symptoms. This will be followed by a physical examination. He or she will be looking closely at the patient's tongue, pulse, complexion, general behavior, and other signs like coughs or pains. From this, the acupuncturist will be able to determine patterns of symptoms indicating which organs are imbalanced. Acupuncture needles are always sterilized and it is a safe procedure.

In most cases, acupuncture does work ad relieves pain by helping stimulate the release endorphins into the bloodstream.

Acupuncture:  Ancient Needle Work as Pain Relief Treatment

Summary:
Acupuncture is an ancient form of pain relief treatment that improves the flow of energy throughout the body. Article Body:
The sight of piercing needles through the skin in specific areas of the body may appear to be painful, but acupuncture is actually an ancient form of pain relief treatment that improves the flow of energy throughout the body. Acupuncture originated in China thousands of years ago and is still being practiced until now.  The National Institutes of Health has sponsored several studies on the effects of acupuncture as pain relief treatment for conditions such as arthritis and other ailments that produce chronic pain.  While western scientists suspect that acupuncture may stimulate the release of chemicals to soothe pain or prompt the body's natural healing abilities, the patient's faith or belief in acupuncture is a big factor in the procedure's success.
According to Dr. Hayes Wilson, chief rheumatologist at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and national medical adviser to the Arthritis Foundation, says that acupuncture can work for anybody. However, he said that,“...it's going to work for the people who believe in it.” Many pain relief treatments are effective because of the patient's belief in them. People who don't believe that they're going to get better are less likely to get through.
Since the procedure involves risks inherent in needle use, however, there are some conditions where acupuncture is not recommended, such as those with bleeding disorders as well as people who are taking blood-thinning medications. There is also a high risk of spreading infectious disease, accidental piercing of organs, minor bleeding and broken or forgotten needles.
According to Dennis Turk, professor of anesthesiology and pain research at the University of Washington School of Medicine, people make sense out of noxious sensations and determine how bothersome they really are with the help of the brain. Several factors can affect how people perceive sensations, what they decide to do about them, and how they interact with respect to their environment.
One psychological factor that can intensify pain perception is stress. Muscles tend to become tense and may affect tissues that are already tender. Emotionally, the pressure may amplify pain perception. People who are distressed may interpret situations to be more difficult and may lead them to avoid certain types of activities because they are afraid that it will make their pain become worse.
A change in the source of stress can help alleviate the pressure. In the case of a frequent nagging from your spouse, try to find a way to sit down and discuss the problem with open communication. If changing the source of tension is not possible, consider wholesome and positive distraction such as watching a movie, listening to music, or spending time with friends. Pleasurable activities can shift the focus away from the pain temporarily.
Relaxation is another pain relief treatment. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing techniques, progressive muscle relaxation, massage, Tai Chi, and visualization have been proven to be effective pain relief treatment.
Joining support groups or getting individual counseling also help in coping with stress or ailment. However, while there is enough evidence to prove that people who join support groups experience dramatic improvements in their physical and emotional well-being, nevertheless, people who are not open in discussing about their problems may not benefit from this type of stress-management strategy.  Different techniques apply for different people.

We often experience sinus problems especially when it is cold. And sometimes we just disregard the signs and symptoms we experience knowing it is only a simple cold symptom, however from simple cold develops into a sinus infection. How hard to spot the difference isn’t it?
Here is a more specific presentation of the signs and symptoms of sinus infection depending upon which of the sinuses are affected and in cases where the infection is acute or chronic.
The following are the sinus infection cases under the Acute Sinusitis.
Frontal Sinusitis (located above the eyes in the region of the forehead) - In this case for sinus infection symptom there is severe ache in the forehead, fever, postnasal drip or nasal discharge and the sufferer is on a lot of pain when in a stretched out position but feels a bit better when the head is upright. Maxillary Sinusitis (located on either side of the nostrils in the cheekbones) - There is pain and pressure on one or both sides of the cheek; tenderness, redness and swelling of the cheekbone; pain is worse when the head is upright and feels better when in reclining position; pain across the cheekbone, under or around the eye or around the upper teeth; there is also nasal discharge.
Ethmoid Sinusitis (located behind the bridge of the nose and at the base of the nose between the eyes) - There is nasal congestion with nasal discharge; pain or pressure around the inner corner of the eye or on one side of the nose; headache in the temple or surrounding eye, pain or pressure symptoms worse when coughing, straining or lying back but better when the head is upright.
Sphenoid Sinusitis (located behind the ethmoid sinuses and the eyes) - The sinus infection symptom here are fever; nasal discharge; deep headache with throbbing pain behind and on top of the head, across the forehead, and behind the eye; pain is worse when lying back and bending forward; vision disturbances when pressure extends to the brain.
And for the sinus infection under Chronic Sinusitis here are the following symptoms.
Frontal Sinusitis –the sufferer will feel a constant low-grade headache in the forehead and accounted damage in the sinus area.
Maxillary Sinusitis - There’s pressure below the eye, chronic toothache, discomfort throughout the day with amplified cough at night are some of the effects.
Ethmoid Sinusitis - There is chronic sore throat that causes bad breath; chronic nasal discharge, congestion, and a bit of discomfort across the bridge of the nose; worse pain in the late morning and when wearing glasses, recurs in other sinuses.
Sphenoid Sinusitis - The sinus infection symptom in this sinus is low-grade headache.
Anyone can be a victim of this infection. It may sound impossible to prevent this but on the contrary you can get yourself be cured. Just be vigilant to detect such symptoms and be ready to prepare a proper medication if persist.

Acuvue Hydraclear contact lenses, are they right for you?

Summary:
Get the facts and some tips on the care of the acuvue hydraclear contact lenses and if these revolutionary contacts are right for you...

Keywords:

Article Body:
Acuvue Hydraclear contact lenses are some of the finest, most advanced contact lenses on the market today. Of course they come with the fine Acuvue name, which represents uncompromising quality and unparalleled innovation no matter which type of Acuvue lenses you use.

Another great Johnson & Johnson product, the acuvue hydraclear contact lenses comes with the latest refinements that acuvue offers to make your contact lens wearing experience the most comfortable and beneficial possible.

But, even with these advances and super technology, these lenses require the same basic but very important care that all lenses require.

Just like any other lenses the acuvue hydraclear contact lenses need to be replaced on a regular basis, depending on exactly what type of acuvue they are. It is very important that you make sure to set a regular schedule for removing and discarding your old lenses and replacing them with a new pair.

Here are a few tips you may want to consider to stay on a regular schedule.

If you need to replace your lenses weekly, for example, maybe you can time your contact lens schedule to your favorite show, like “Survivor.” This way, you remember to replace your old lenses for crisp new ones each week before the show begins. Of course this is just an idea and I wouldn't really recommend it since TV programming constantly changes from season to season.

A better idea would be to write your replacement date on a calendar or on your refrigerator. This way you will be reminded each time to change your contact lenses.

Then again if your on the cutting edge of technology and the digital revolution like I am, you can program your desktop or laptop email calendar program like Microsoft Outlook or your personal digital assistant (PDA) to remind you to replace your lenses.

Or maybe just the old-fashioned techniques will work for you, like writing the date on a new box of lenses with a permanent marker when you open them and when you get down to your last box, you can add another note on the box, something like “Reorder.”

Taking such simple precautionary steps like these is critical to ensure that you are getting the most from your Acuvue Hydraclear contact lenses. This is very important, because the most from these advanced lenses is a lot.

Hydraclear is fantastic new substance that provides the best features in a contact. For your eyes you get a soft, silky feel that provides wearability and comfort over the long haul.

Johnson & Johnson acuvue hydraclear contact lenses are made from a soft flexible material that promises you clear and crisp vision enhancement. Hydraclear also boasts low dehydration, which means you don't have to worry about that terrible dry feeling in your eyes after prolonged use, and of course low protein deposits, which has a serious effect on all lenses durability and performance.

And here is one more point to keep in mind, the acuvues come with the highest UVA and UVB blocking on the market to guard against the sun’s harmful rays giving your eyes even more added protection.

Without a doubt the Acuvue Hydraclear is a great lense and breakthrough for many contact lense wearers. Talk to your doctor and ask him/her about these lenses. They will be more than happy to answer any questions you have and help you make the right decision for you and your eyes health.

article:

As the owner of several weight loss ebooks and weight loss web sites I am often asked, “What are the best all around diet foods?”
My first response is to tell people that there are no magic diet foods that will help you lose weight fast, and it is important to understand that most people must make lifestyle changes that include a permanent change in their diet (not a fad diet, or temporary diet), and exercise must play a role in any weight loss program.
Once people understand these basic elements to any weight loss program I feel much better explaining to them what I believe are the best diets foods in existence because what you eat will have a big effect on how quickly you lose weight, and more importantly, how long you keep the weight off.
There are certain foods that you really should be eating on a regular basis. They come from all food categories, but every one of these diet foods has one thing in common: they pack a lot of nutritional punch into their calories. Here's a list of five diet foods that will help you stay healthy and lose weight.
1. Whole grain breads
If you've been paying attention to latest weight loss fads, you know that carbs are the current diet buster. Many weight loss programs claim that if you just stay away from all carbs you'll lose weight no matter what else you eat. That's not only wrong, it's downright dangerous for both your health and your diet.
Instead of cutting out carbs, you should be aiming to reduce carbs to a healthy portion of your diet - which most doctors agree is about 50-60% of your caloric intake. That means that if you're on a 1500 calorie a day diet, you should be striving to get about 900 calories a day from grains, fruits and vegetables. Whole grain breads pack a lot of nutritional value. Replace your two slices of white toast with 1/2 a cup of oatmeal or whole grain cereal, and for about the same number of calories, you'll be getting three times the vitamins, amino acids and roughage that your body needs to function. You'll feel full far longer, too - because you've given your body something to work on that will take a while to digest.
2. Fish
Eat at least three servings of fish per week. Fish is low in fat, is high in protein, and provides something that most other proteins don't - omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 is one of the main building blocks in your cells. If your body doesn't get enough Omega 3 fatty acids, it will try to build cells from other fatty acids. The problem is that those cells are not as flexible, and not quite the right shape. Among the cells that aren't quite right are the ones in your brain that help control impulses and tell your body what it needs. By providing enough Omega 3 fatty acids for your body to use, you'll be healing the damage done through years of poor diet. And since fish, as a general rule, has fewer calories than most meats, you'll be saving calories as well. Just remember that you're replacing portions of meat with fish, not adding them to what you already eat.
3. Spinach
Spinach is one of the lowest cost sources of nutrition you can give your body with 13 calories and 2 grams of carbohydrate in 2 cups of chopped raw spinach. Every serving gives you folic acid, manganese, beta-carotene, protein, lutein (a potent anti-oxidant), magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin K. You can eat it raw in salads, steamed as a side dish, or sautéed in a tiny bit of oil for a different taste, and still get all the nutritional benefits.
4. Olive Oil
Have you every heard of the Mediterranean diet?  Well, as it turns out, olive oil is a mono-unsaturated fat that is the primary source of fat in the so-called Mediterranean diet. Your body does need a little fat to process vitamins and use them properly. It contains antioxidants, flavonoids, beta-carotene and vitamin E, among other things. One tablespoon has a whopping 125 calories, but drizzled on a 13 calorie spinach salad with a little lemon juice and some garlic, you still have a meal with less than 150 calories - and a whole lot of healthy fuel for your body.
5. Pink Grapefruit
With only 40 calories in half a grapefruit, you're getting 45 mg of vitamin C, lycopene, pectin, beta-carotene and potassium. It's versatile and tasty. Eat it as is for breakfast, or toss it into a salad with spinach for an extra punch to perk up the nutritional quality of your diet.
As stated earlier, the best weight loss plan combines a healthy lifelong diet with daily exercise.  And, your diet should not be based around any single one ingredient. The best way to lose weight is to eat a healthy variety of foods to make sure that you get all the essential nutrients that you need each day.  The diet foods mentioned above are five of the best diet foods that should be included as part of any weight loss program and diet plan.

Modern civilization has produced an unusually stressful environment to humans and animals, with extreme high demands on our physical and mental abilities. The last one hundred years have brought unique new challenges for all. It doesn’t take much reflection upon the obvious and not so obvious sources of stressors today to realize the average person endures a lifetime of extraordinary physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual stress.
Unfortunately the continual assault of these daily modern stressors can have severe consequences on our health and well-being. Are you aware that 80% of all illness and disease today is stress related? That 25% of all prescriptions written are due to issues stemming from the root problem of stress. That one of the three top selling drugs in North America is a tranquilizer and 2/3 of all visits to family physicians also stem from stress. What can be done about it? The answer is, Prime One! Dr. Brekhman’s signature daily adaptogenic herbal formula made with the seven most powerful Adaptogens known to man.
What are Adaptogens? Adaptogens are biologically active substances found in certain herbs and plants, which help the body and mind of humans and animals adapt to the change and stresses of life.
The world-renowned Russian research scientist, Dr. Israel I. Brekhman PhD, is hailed world-wide as the father of extensive Adaptogen research. He was a professor of medicine, and a physiological pharmacologist. The Soviet Union and The Russian National Parliament bestowed on the good doctor the Order of Lenin, The Lenin Medal for valiant work, as well as the coveted Certificate of Honour, these awards came to him for breaking the genetic codes of plants, uncovering the molecular structures of their phyto-chemicals and his lifetime work with Adaptogens.
He also held 40 patents, published 22 monographs, several hundred scientific articles, and wrote many books. Dr. Brekhman pioneered a vast “top-secret” scientific effort funded by the Russian government involving 1200 of their best scientists. Directed by Dr. Brekhman this scientific community applied scientific methodology to the study of plants. They explored plant biological codes and analyzed their molecular structures. Entire populations of towns, schools, hospitals and factories became his test subjects. In one case study, for example they analyzed an entire town and all its inhabitants including the animals for twelve long years. This lead to one of the most massive, sustained and successful programs of human and animal testing in recorded scientific history.
After 45-years of consistent research and thousands of clinical trials, the final patented formulation, Prime One was created and consists of seven adaptogenic herbal extracts. The primary herb is ‘Eleutherococcus’ also known as Siberian ginseng. This phenomenal herbal blend was subsequently found in clinical trials to have surprising synergistic qualities – so that the blend of these seven herbs together was significantly more effective than any of the single herbs taken alone.
Prime One contains rare trace minerals, co-enzymes, metabolites, anti-oxidants and vitamins. These phyto-nutrients address entire classes of body functions. They enhance human resistance to a broad variety of physical, emotional, metabolic and environmental stresses, and fill a nutritional void addressed by no other dietary element.
In 1962 Eleutherococcus, the prototype Adaptogen was declared an official herbal medicine by the USSR Minister of Health and was included in their National Drug Guide, the pharmacopoeia. Also, “Brekhman’s formula was used on par with diabetes medications to help  balance blood sugar levels”. Morton Walker medical journal report Innovative Biologics, July 1994
Why are Adaptogens important to our health you might ask? Well, stressors such as: toxins, pollutants, oxidants, and chemicals in processed foods, radiation, depression and fatigue – are now thought to be the cause of DNA mutations that produce cancer. Adaptogens are the missing nutrients from nature that protect us from the chemical hormonal assault of such stressors. The frequency of cancer was 3.3 times lower in the animals taking the Adaptogens than in the control group of animals not given Adaptogens.
But the paramount question for each of us concerned about health is whether we can find a way to reduce, undo and buffer these damaging chemical effects of stress. That is precisely what Adaptogens are all about.
The soviet scientific community tested these particular plant extracts, on large groups of people under physical and mental stress. Russian cosmonauts, top athletes, aircraft pilots, military personnel, truck drivers, factory workers, were all given Adaptogens. They found  dramatic improvements in performance, fewer errors, less illness, less accidents and calmer functioning.
The Russians spent more than 500 million dollars in Soviet government sponsored monies backing this massive secret research. Dr. Brekhman’s, Prime One, is one of the most researched, scientifically sound nutritional food supplements in the natural products market place today bar none!
Initially, for political reasons, Adaptogens were kept a highly guarded secret from the rest of the world for some time. Perhaps only in the Soviet Union could such an undertaking have been considered. Only in a totalitarian state could this massive testing have ever been carried out. Certainly, it would never have found adequate funding or the amount of test subjects in Canada or the United States, as was done in Russia on such a massive scale.
Other countries such as Germany, Japan, and Sweden, independently conducted their own research and testing validating the research and results of Brekhman’s work. The Medical Molecular Biology Institute of Heidelburg, Germany, published an important double blind study in the 1990’s testing one of Brekhman’s Adaptogens, Eleutherococcus Senticosus. This study employing flow-cytometry showed a powerful strengthening of the immune system. Those who received the plant extract during the clinical trials had their immune system markers reveal all T-lymphocyte subsets, including cancer killing cyto-toxic t-cells showed 40 to 80 % increase. Excerpt from a German Study done in 1990 on Eleutherococcus Senticosus as an Immunodulatory Agent
In 1984 a very important scientific paper by the renowned Soviet molecular biologist, Dr. Igor Totoroff, showed that these plant extracts (found in Brekhman’s formula) had wide ranging effects in different organ systems and could suppress excess cortisol production during stress thus controlling the wide spread damage known to occur from excess cortisol production. These adaptogen extracts also showed increased energy production within human cells. In fact, leading scientific research centre’s world-wide are currently conducting ongoing studies and clinical trials, revealing new and amazing benefits for the human body from the use of Brekhman’s formula.
One can’t help noticing in various medical journals and health publications these days where scientists and leading health professionals are reporting that a human body is as young and as healthy as its immune system allows. In light of these health facts, Prime One is the much-needed answer for our health and well-being.
Dr. Brekhman’s research was a key factor in the success of the Soviet Space Program. His formulas restored the natural balance of the cosmonauts’ bodies and protected them against the stress that is inherent in space flight, such as motion, vertigo, weightlessness and inactivity. Brekhman’s Adaptogen formulas became known as the Soviet “Right Stuff”.
These Adaptogens were exclusively used by the top Russian Sports figures that dominated in the sports sector, world-wide for decades. Not the least of Brekhman’s accomplishments was achieving sports success for world-class Russian athletes, as well, other athletes from Eastern Bloc countries. Soviet Olympic and elite athletes have routinely for decades included Brekhman’s adaptogenic formulas in their training programs to give them a well-documented optimal edge in competition.
More recently, Dr. Brekhman’s formula was administered to the victims of the Chernobyl disaster with success and great benefit, so significantly that Dr. Vladimir G. Sprigin, PhD., Principal Scientific Fellow at the Russian Academy of Sciences, wrote a letter to AMS Health Sciences, right after the terrible tragedy on Sept 11, 2001, stating; “Because of ongoing events I would like to tell you that you have in your hands the miracle remedy for the people that passed through such physical and emotional stress”; I remember how effective Eleutherococcus (the main Adaptogen) was for this purpose after Chernobyl Catastrophe and you have the preparation that is at least 6 times more powerful”.
Vladimir G. Sprigin PhD.,
Russian Academy of Sciences

Shortly after the 911 tragedies, world wide associates donated $200,000 worth of Prime One and Prime One Concentrate to the New York Firefighters, and ERT Ground Zero Rescue workers and their working animals.  The fire fighters and ERT workers reported that, “Prime One helped them cope with the stressors at hand, giving them the advantage of working more than normal hours with less exhaustion despite the unfamiliar stressful circumstances”.
Phil Cappadora, Firefighter, NY City
Kevin Gallagher, President,
Firefighter’s Union, New York City

Best selling author Pete Bilac wrote a book about Dr. Brekhman and Adaptogens titled “Managing Stress through the Miracle of Adaptogens. Pete credits Brekhman’s Prime One formula for saving his sons life. Pete’s many books are currently available in any of the Chapter’s bookstores.

One of the world’s leading Biochemists, Dr. Stephen Fulder PhD states in one of his many articles on Adaptogens, "The soviets almost universally used Adaptogens to reduce convalescence, to return patients to health more quickly after heart attacks and other illnesses. It became standard treatment for patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer. Perhaps Adaptogens had their most widespread impact in the area of Russian sports and the Brekhman formulas were routinely used on par with diabetes medications".
Dr. Steven Fulder PhD., Oxford, England
International Authority on health and wellness

Research has convincingly shown that Adaptogens are a powerful protection against radiation. They increase non-specific resistance to stress. Inhibits free-radical oxidation, accelerates rehabilitative processes, protects vital organs from stress, and has potent anti-viral properties, and has been found to be very effective in helping normalize blood sugar levels. It has been proven that the chemical hormonal assault on the body from stress lowers the immune system responses. The effects from stress upon the immune system are dramatic, immediate and well documented.
The good news is that Prime One, Dr. Brekhman’s signature Adaptogen formula is now available world wide through The Adaptogens for Life Group. Prime One is sold through Network marketing as per Dr. Brekhman’s request. It was his wish for all the peoples of the world, to hear by word of mouth of his work and have access to his formulas.
“It has always been my dream to create a special formula to prepare people for life and to protect them from stress.”
Dr Israel I. Brekhman 1921 - 1994
Dr. Israel I. Brekhman remains a visionary whose dream to enhance human health and to prevent disease talks to a new generation today.

“Psychological and physiological dependence on a substance or practice” – is the medical definition of the term addiction. An addiction is an uncontrollably strong longing for something -  an abnormal kinky obsession for things.  A person with an addiction is called an addict.

Addiction is in fact a hydra-headed concept having different facets.  Medical researches and studies have divulged that every individual to some extent has an addiction.  People who have an uncanny pining or obsession for anything, are indeed addicted.  Medical studies have also revealed other forms of addiction besides alcohol, nicotine and drugs.

According to the medical community, generally there are two forms of addiction.  First there is the physical addiction, or physical dependence and psychological addiction. The second type is called pseudo-addiction.

Physical dependence: An addiction in which the addict becomes physically dependent on intoxicating substances or drugs.  People dependent on tobacco or smoking suffer from nicotine addiction.  Dipsomaniac people suffer from alcohol addiction.

Drug addiction literally means addiction to certain drugs.  A drug addiction is an extreme state of addiction resulting from drug abuse.  Drug abuse is a common practice where hard drugs are abused – for example cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamine, opiates (heroin, morphine and codeine) and laxatives - drugs derived from narcotics. There is a debate over the idea that freely-sold substances like alcohol and nicotine should be classified as hard drugs, as the both are linked with high mortality rates.

Psychological addiction: The term literally means getting psychologically addicted to certain things or practices. Sometimes there are people who are highly obsessed with practices like gambling, food, sex, pornography, computer, work, shopping, spending etc.  Therefore as absurd as this may sound, these people actually do in fact suffer from gambling addiction, food addiction, sex addiction, porn addiction, computer addiction, work addiction, shopping addiction, and spending addiction respectively.  People addicted to food consumption are highly preoccupied with overeating and overeating is food addiction. These people are sometimes mockingly dubbed as “food alcoholic”.  Narcissism is also a form of addiction.

Pseudo-addiction is the state in which a patient manifests drug-seeking behavior similar to psychological addiction; however, the patient experiences genuine pain or other symptoms in such cases.  Normal behavior is resumed as soon as the pain has subsided.

The physical dependence on a substance such as drug addiction, nicotine addiction and alcohol addiction can sadly often have direly fatal results.

An addiction in any form is the sign of an abnormality that requires immediate treatment. An addiction is a disorder, but it is treatable. There are numerous addiction help centers or rehabilitation centers providing addiction treatment, all over the world.  Standard drug addiction treatment may include behavioral therapy, medication therapy, or a combination of both.

People experiencing any symptoms of addiction should go forward for treatment before their addiction becomes significantly advanced.

Addictions are pervasive in our culture. And addictions to alcohol or drugs aren’t the only ones out there. Addiction to shopping, sex, gambling, video games, are but a few.
Addictive habits are forms of dependence. They are habits- performed time after time- done so often, they are performed in involuntary or compulsive fashion.
Ask any addict how hard it is to break a habit. One reason these habits are so hard to break is the physiological basis for addiction. Diana Schwarzbein, MD, does a stellar job in articulating these physiological mechanisms in “The Schwarzbein Principle”.(Diana Schwarzbein, MD, Nancy Deville, Health Communications, Deerfield Beach, FL,1999)
Many substances that people are prone to become dependent on tend to lower serotonin levels in the brain. Examples include high glycemic carbohydrates, alcohol, and street drugs, such as methamphetamines and cocaine; even stimulants like caffeine results in lowered serotonin in the brain. Lowered serotonin, as we know, leads to depression and the tendency to increase craving. Typically we seek what is easy and what is available to us. If alcohol isn’t available, we will reach for chocolate. Or, we will resume smoking, if we quit years ago.
Have you even met anyone who got a promotion and blew through their money just as fast? We used to attribute this level of spending primarily to people diagnosed with manic- depression. Today, such spending, just as one example, can be attributable probably much more commonly than we realize to a compulsive craving or habit.
All these compulsive habits do initially cause a rush of serotonin. The initial rush of serotonin is followed by a serotonin depletion that we know as depression. Addicts are no longer able to naturally support the rush of serotonin and the subsequent serotonin drop.  It is at this point, addicts really “crash”-they hit “rock bottom” and often face hopelessness and despondency.
Dr. Schwarzbein astutely reminds us that people can be addicted to stress. Stress causes release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, insulin which stimulate the production of serotonin. Eventually the body cannot maintain this surge of serotonin and serotonin levels crash. This low serotonin state is what cravings are made of.
Likewise the same mechanism is taking place in people who seem to be addicted to crisis in their lives. This way of life becomes a roller coaster that is not easy to get off. In fact, the “crashes” can so unravel one’s life, it can take years of pain and struggle to regroup, heal and get one’s life back on track.
So no matter what the addiction, if we do not get off that physiological roller coaster, we will simply substitute one addiction for another.
And how do we get off this roller coaster?
A proactive total commitment to health and recovery is the only way.
Physiologically, the need to infuse the body with a balanced set of nutrients is essential. The time for ‘crash’ diets is over. Balance in intake of proteins, fats and carbohydrates is essential. However, the carbohydrates need to be “good” carbs- the ones found in starchy vegetables like peas, corn, leeks, lima beans, turnips and the like; legumes such as beans and grains in their natural state, yogurt and most fruits. Breads should be eaten sparingly, and crackers, which contain hydrogenated fats, are best avoided altogether.
Fast foods are best avoided altogether. So are gravies and ketchup. So are processed snack foods like chips and pizza. Sugar pastries and desserts are out as well.
The more foods we can eat in the natural state the better. That means fresh, organic produce. Also, our meats need to be lean and be free of injected chemicals as well. If you notice, a lot more of our larger chains are carrying organic selections. Clearly people are becoming more knowledgeable about their grocery selections.
Future articles will elaborate more on dietary selections. Let’s not forget mental and emotional health as part of recovery. Transforming our negative belief systems into positive ones can go along way in promoting recovery from seemingly insurmountable addictions. This includes overcoming insecurities, fear of rejection, anger, rage, bitterness, guilt, shame, and a root of unforgiveness. Even if we have been treated unfairly, overcoming these feelings will release a process of healing and restoration that will actually help us reduce our risk of relapse into addictive behaviors. These issues are like layers that need to be brought to the surface and resolved, for life to be lived to the fullest. And it is the only pathway out of addiction for good. We cannot live life to the fullest harboring these feelings.
And a deepening sense of spirituality is vital towards recovery. A belief that there is a Power greater than ourselves who we can depend on when things get rough. It’s really the only type of dependency that frees us up to live life to the fullest. And it takes openness, time and commitment to deepen our spiritual connection and beliefs. Subsequent articles will expound on this.
Addiction is a complex, and gripping state of imbalance that overtakes a person’s body, mind and spirit. Clearly recovery is a complex and lifelong process, but so worthwhile. And it is achievable. The more we understand the complex physiological processes taking place that reinforce addiction, the more we can invest in better self care, and heal. Our lives depend on it.

Addiction Retreats

A new weapon in the battle against addiction has emerged recently. Instead of just working through a 12-step program, or being helped medically, a number of people who are having problems with addiction have chosen a different route. Addiction retreats have popped up in several areas of the United States, taking a new approach to helping those who have addictions to substances and other addictive behaviors.

One of the new addiction retreats that has started recently is the Essence Recovery Center, located in Asheville, North Carolina. This retreat offers an all-inclusive vacation-like feel, all while helping you to work through your problems with addiction. There are therapy sessions, which include individual "talk" therapy, as well as music and art therapy. They also offer massage therapy and acupuncture, which help to detoxify your body. Meditation, 12-step group programs, sauna and whirlpools, and even spa cuisine help to round out this holistic spa retreat. Week long programs and 28 day programs are available, and the spa is careful to point out that you should get your doctor's approval before starting this program, as it is not a medical program.

One of the addiction retreats located outside of the US is the Soukya Holistic Health Center in Bangalore, India. This retreat is one that combines many different health approaches, such as Ayurveda, homeopathy, naturopathy, acupuncture and Western (allopathic) medicine, in order to help people beat their addictions. With their approach including counseling, homeopathic remedies, relaxation techniques and more, they have earned the praise of people such as Dr. Deepak Chopra, a well-known doctor and philosopher from here in the US. Bangalore is known for having many English speaking residents and is a city that is often visited by US and British citizens. As with all programs, your doctor should be consulted before you start (or book your stay).

This new group of addiction retreats is sure to grow as more people discover the healing benefits of total body cleansing and relaxation. Whether you are in need of a long stay or just a short trip to rejuvenate your mind and spirit, these retreat centers offer more than just the usual massages and facials found at most other spas. They offer a new way of life and a new way of thinking, along with the luxury of a spa atmosphere.

Addiction is a scary thing and breaking it is a difficult task. Addiction retreats offer people the ability and time to break the addiction curse.

There are many different types of addiction treatment or detox centers and each of them will have a different function and role in the detox process.  There will usually be a medical doctor present for each detox procedure that takes place in the detox center.  A medial staff is there to assist the addict in rapidly detoxing from the substance of abuse and to make the process as pain free as possible.  When a person enters a detox center they are usually doing so under the advice of their doctor.  Most detox centers will only take a patient that has been referred by a medical doctor.

An addiction treatment center is available for a variety of substance abuse problems.  These problems can include alcohol addiction, narcotic abuse, and chemical dependency.
Many times a person will enter a detox center and have multiple addictions that need to be dealt with.  In these circumstances a detox center will usually deal with all of the addictions so that the person can cleanse their body of all toxic substances at one time.

The more addiction that a person has when they enter a detox center the longer it will take for the substance of abuse to be flushed from the body and the more counseling and therapy a person will need once the detox center has helped them through the withdrawal of their addiction.

The Internet is a great resource for finding the best addiction treatment centers. In your search, you should focus on finding those centers with high success rates for treatment completion and long-term drug freedom. It's also important to find addiction treatment centers that have 24-hour supervision over their members. Remember: You want your loved ones to have their freedom, but drug addicts have typically not build up the self-control that's necessary to quit cold turkey.

Article Body:
While most people enjoy casino gambling, sports betting, lottery and bingo playing for the fun and excitement it provides, others may experience gambling as an addictive and distractive habit. Statistics show that while 85 percent of the adult population in the US enjoys some type of gambling every year, between 2 and 3 percent of will develop a gambling problem and 1 percent of them are diagnosed as pathological gamblers.

Where can you draw the line between harmless gambling to problem gambling? How can you tell if you or your friend are compulsive gamblers? Here you can find answers to these questions and other questions regarding problem gambling and gambling addiction.

What is the Meaning of Problem Gambling?
Problem gambling or compulsive gambling is defined as an uncontrollable urge to gamble despite the destructive effect of gambling on the gamblers life and despite feelings of guilt and remorse. Problem gambling tends to have a negative effect on the gamblers financial state, relationships and daily life. Severe cases of problem gambling can be defined as pathological gambling.

Am I a Compulsive Gambler?
1) Do you gamble until your last penny runs out?
2) Do you gamble to win back your former losses or debts?
3) Did you ever had to borrow money to continue gamble?
4) Did your gambling habit ever made you lie to your friends or family?
5) Did you ever skip work or other obligation to gamble?
6) Do you tend to gamble to forget about your personal problems or to celebrate happy occasions?
7) Does gambling have a negative affect on your daily life or relationships?

If you have answered yes on at least one of the questions listed above, then you have a problem.

Can Anyone Become a Compulsive Gambler?
Theoretically, yes. Any gambler can develop gambling problem regardless to the type of gambling he is occupied with, the amount of money and time he is spending on gambling. Researches show that slot machines that can be found in bars and convenient stores are the most addictive type of gambling activity, while lottery draws and bingo games are located on the other end of the scale. Gambling addiction is an emotional problem; its symptoms, causes and treatments are similar to any other form of addiction.

How Can I treat Gambling Addiction?
1) Group Therapy:
Gamblers Anonymous offers a 12 step self help program similar to the one offered to alcohol addicts in Alcoholics Anonymous.  Group therapy also offers gambling addicts advice and support from professional counselors and other gambling addicts in different phases of their recovery process. Gambler Anonymous centers are available in more than 1,200 locations statewide.

2) Individual Therapy:
Cognitive or behavior therapy can help gambling addicts to identify their unaware thinking and acting patterns, which led them to gamble compulsively, and to replace them with controllable and healthier ways of thinking.

3) Psychiatric Medication:
It has recently been proven that antidepressant medications from the family of SSRIs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors can be affective in treatment of gambling addicts.

Adding more phytonutrients to your diet might just seem like a prescription for more food, more confusion, more to worry about. But in reality, making sure you get enough of the phytonutrient benefit is as easy as adding color, freshness and variety.

Phytonutrients are found naturally in a variety of foods, such as legumes, nuts, teas, fruits, vegetables and grains, but are not considered necessary to sustain life (as are fats, protein, vitamins and minerals). Many people choose to increase phytonutrients in their diet by improved diet as well as nutritional supplementation.

Phytonutrients are thought to have a variety of beneficial and significant benefits to our health. Eating more whole foods in the form of fruits and vegetables and the like can benefit you by protecting you from cancer and certain diseases. In addition, it’s believed that phytonutrients can improve cell-to-cell communication within the body, possibly repair DNA damage from smoking and other toxic substances, and strengthen the immune system.

So how do you add more phytonutrients to your diet? It’s as easy as adding color, variety and freshness.

Color – When you think of phytonutrients, think color. Think of the bright red of a perfectly ripe tomato, or the rich redness of a summer grape. Although fruits and vegetables are the best source of nutrient-dense phytonutrients, most Americans get woefully low amounts of fresh produce in their diets. According to the USDA, while it’s recommended we get at least 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, most Americans get little more than 3 servings. Of that, deep yellow and dark green vegetables account for only 0.2 daily servings on average.

Yet it’s the richly colored vegetables and fruits that provide the best sources of phytonutrients. If your grocery cart isn’t full of color (and that doesn’t include colored Goldfish crackers), add some next time you’re shopping.

Variety -- Although fruits and vegetables are the best sources of phytonutrients, they aren’t the only source. So while you want to add a lot of color to your diet in the form of nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables like berries, grapes, tomatoes, peppers, spinach and the like, think about adding other sources of phytonutrients as well. Consider adding a glass of tea at lunch or dinner or some chopped pecans or slivered almonds to your oatmeal in the morning.

Freshness – There is much debate on the value of fresh vegetables versus frozen. It’s fair to say everyone agrees that canned holds little nutritional content, so adding can of veggies to your cart isn’t the best plan (this excludes canned tomatoes which retain the freshness and nutrient value of fresh). But in a pinch, or in the off season, frozen vegetables can certainly be included in your daily diet. Frozen fruits are always fine, as long as they are whole, unprocessed and without added sugar.

article:

As the holidays near, many of us will be surrounded by family and friends – some who we haven’t seen for some time.  As we reminisce and update each other on what’s been going on in our lives, most assuredly we will notice changes in our loved ones.  It may be weight loss – or weight gain.  It could be hair color – or hair loss.  The biggest changes we notice are the growth of children.  Babies start crawling and walking and talking.  Older children enter school.  Children we remember being in grade school “just yesterday” are getting ready to leave school and enter their adult lives.
There is one change we may notice in our friends and relatives that we won’t comment on – hearing loss.  Hearing loss is something we should mention to people we care about because it is often not apparent to the sufferer.  In fact, age related hearing loss often takes place over a long period of time.  Additionally, when it is identified, it is often too late to do very much about.
So, what should you pay attention to if you think someone you care about is suffering from hearing loss?

a ringing, roaring, hissing or buzzing in the ear
trouble determining television sounds from real sounds
dizziness and loss of balance
difficulty hearing low pitched sounds or whispers
moderate to severe vision impairment

If a potential hearing loss symptom is identified in someone you care about, there may be some challenges in telling them.  While some hearing loss can be caused by something as simple as too much earwax, most hearing loss has long term potential and some hearing loss is indicative of a serious health condition.  A short visit with a hearing care professional will sort out the problem and provide peace of mind.  The important thing to remember is the earlier hearing loss is diagnosed, is the sooner it can be treated.  Encourage your loved one to see a hearing professional or do some research on the internet.  Hearing Aid Match will even give you a free hearing test.
It’s easy to point out a positive change in someone you care about, but sometimes it’s necessary to point out, in a loving manner, changes that aren’t so positive.  Hearing loss is one of those changes that need to be pointed out.  This holiday season, pay special attention to those you care about who may have this problem.

article:

Certain weight loss diets, such as Atkins, emphasize increased protein consumption while reducing carbohydrates. One recent commercial in America depicts a woman describing her meal from the previous evening: “I had beef. With a side of beef.” Diets like this don’t offer the variety of choices that we normally enjoy, and they cause concern over kidney and liver damage.
High protein diets are effective ways of building lean body mass. It’s been a reliable technique for athletes. For people seeking to lose weight, these diets will increase your resting metabolic rate as the muscular-skeletal tissue increases. In other words, you’ll gain muscle tissue while your body burns fat.
It’s a great concept, but how do we do it without damaging our kidneys and liver? The key is in choosing the best sources of protein possible. Red meat is high in protein, but is difficult for our bodies to break down, requiring extra effort from our liver and kidneys, in addition to being a source of unhealthy cholesterol.
For dieters, the best sources of protein are soy and whey. They are heart healthy foods that are very versatile. Soy protein is absorbed slowly, making you feel full until your next meal. Whey protein is absorbed faster, which sends signals to your brain, notifying it that your body’s hunger has been satisfied. The combination of these two protein sources will control your cravings while reducing your overall food intake.
A protein powder that is made with a blend of soy and whey protein is a useful ingredient for the dieter. One can sneak extra protein into favorite dishes by adding it to pasta dishes, using it to thicken sauces, sprinkling it on vegetables, and baking with it. Find shake mixes, sports drink mixes, and meat substitutes that have been made with a blend of soy and whey protein.
The next consideration for the high protein dieter is the rate at which you consume the protein. If a dieter has a target protein consumption of 100 grams, his body needs time to process and absorb that much protein. If this dieter skips breakfast, his liver and kidneys will have to work harder to filter the 100 grams of protein he crams in during the last half of the day.
If you need to lose weight, consume 3 healthy, high protein meals in addition to 2 healthy snacks. Your body can absorb 30 grams of protein every 3 to 4 hours, so adjust your meal plans and protein consumption accordingly.
Here are some additional ideas for an effective high protein diet:
Take a multi-vitamin while you are dieting. You don’t want your body to experience malnutrition while you are on a controlled or restricted diet.
Drink 6 to 8 eight-ounce glasses of water each day. This is especially important for higher protein consumption, as it will improve the performance your liver and kidneys.
Consider an Omega 3 fatty acid supplement. Obesity is an inflammatory disease, and the omega 3 fatty acids help control cellular inflammation.
Also, consider taking an amino acid supplement, which helps break down proteins, making them easier for your body to absorb, while reducing the burden on your liver and kidneys.
Once you’ve achieved your weight loss goal, you can reduce your daily protein consumption to 60 to 80 grams, which is the recommended amount to maintain lean body mass. The guidance of a health or wellness professional should be used when determining the protein targets for your body. Many people need guidance that goes beyond FDA nutrition charts. An individual’s eating habits, trigger foods, medical history, and body shape are important factors to consider when revising a diet plan.

article:

There is an epidemic, at least in the States when it comes to treating back pain. Most doctors do just that... treat back pain rather than finding and eliminating the cause.
You can treat your symptoms for an eternity, and you may feel better for a short period of time. To truly get at the heart of the matter though, you have to find and eliminate the cause of low back pain.
I*ll let you in on a little secret. Most chronic low back pain can be resolved in six weeks or less. It*s true!
A majority of chronic low back pain is caused by simple factors including:

Poor Posture
Injury
Muscle Imbalances
Improper Lifting
Extra Weight

Let*s take a look at each of these more closely.
Poor Posture
Posture is everything when it comes to back pain. Good posture results in stability and strength. Bad posture results in back pain. Many people can alleviate chronic back pain simply by taking the time to improve their posture. You probably can too!
Injury
We are all subject to injury at one time or another. You can work toward preventing injury in certain circumstances however. A lot of the injuries that result in low back pain are caused by improper lifting techniques. You may be lifting a heavy box, or you may be lifting a heavy weight without warming up adequately. Either way, if you injure yourself you are subject to back pain. What can you do to improve your chances for recovery? One of the best things you can do is exercise. You should incorporate stretching activities into your daily regimen. By doing so you will condition your back and are les likely to get injured, and more likely to recover faster when you do get injured.
Muscle Imbalances
Muscle Imbalances occur when two muscles that oppose each other are unequally matched. If you exercise your back regularly for example, but never exercise your stomach, you body will be in a state of imbalance. No matter how strong your back is in this situation, you are going to be subject to back pain. Eliminate the muscle imbalances through rehabilitation and proper exercise and you stand a good chance of eliminating back pain.
Improper Lifting
OK, go back and re-read the section on injury. You need to lift correctly in order to avoid injury. NEVER bend from the waist when picking something up off of the floor, even if it is a feather. Always bend from the knees, and use your leg and abdominal muscles to support you when lifting an object. Many improper lifting injuries actually occur in the gym. This happens when a person attempts to lift a weight that is too heavy or fails to warm up properly. You can avoid these injuries by paying close attention to technique at all times.
Extra Weight
Carrying around a few extra pounds may not seem like a big deal, but when it comes to back pain it could mean the difference between no back pain and chronic back pain. Even if you are carrying around just ten extra pounds, your body will have to shift and redistribute itself to accommodate the extra weight. Consider losing the extra weight, and you may realize your back pain soon follows.

ADD - Alternative Treatments

Word Count:

Summary:
Article on alternative treatments for patients suffering from ADD.

Keywords:
ADD, attention deficit disorder

Article Body:
In this article we're going to discuss some alternative treatments for someone suffering from ADD.

Unfortunately some people suffering from ADD cannot handle taking medication, either for psychological or physical reasons. For these people their only recourse is taking an alternative path.

There are many alternative treatments for ADD. We'll be going over the most common.

One way to treat a person who has ADD is through what is called behavioral modification or intervention. This is a direct negative or positive reinforcement of the behavioral changes we want to have take hold in the child. For example, a child in class who never raises his hand before asking a question might be given a small reward by the teacher for restraining himself enough to raise his hand before asking the question. This is reinforced over and over until it becomes second nature to the child. In other words, the child learns to raise his hand in class before asking a question. Even if the child still blurts out the question after raising his hand he is still rewarded for raising his hand to begin with. It's a small step but an important one. The theory behind this is that rewarding the struggle towards changing the child's behavior encourages the new full behavior.

Another alternative treatment for ADD is the use of neurofeedback. This is where electrodes are attached to the scalp so the patient can actually see the brainwaves working. By doing this he can see the effect on his brain of staying calm in a given situation. This way he can learn to slow down or speed up brain waves.

Another thing that can be done is to hook up an interactive metronome to the patient. This metronome will assist the person suffering from ADD in focusing his attention through sound and movement patterns. This is supposed to also have a calming effect on the patient.

Then there is EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique. This involves stimulating specific acupressure points while speaking certain words that reinforce behavior. This seems to trigger changes in the neurological system.

Another form of therapy is what they call "Animal Assisted Therapy" or AAT. This is the practice of getting a pet for the child to pet and even to take care of. This teaches the child responsibility and keeps his mind occupied. Many children who care for pets become more self regulated and calmer.

A very effective form of treatment is the small specialized classroom. These classrooms fill in gaps in learning that the child may have missed in his regular classroom, because of frequent outbursts. These classrooms incorporate learning with periods of vigorous physical activity, opportunities for success, and attention and reward for every accomplishment. These classrooms also provide naps for proper sleep and good food for proper nutrition.

In the final article in this series we are going to discuss how parents can cope with a child suffering from ADD and what support groups they have available to them.

Title:
ADD - Causes and Diet

Word Count:
485

Summary:
There are several factors that contribute to ADD.  These factors may be controlled through diet possibly eliminating medications.

Keywords:
attention deficit disorder, ADD

Article Body:
Parenting, good or bad does not cause Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).  A calm stable home may help ease some children, while a home with problems may lead to more frustration for a child with ADD/ADHD, but these are not the causes of ADD/ADHD.

Studies show that ADD and ADHD are linked to genetics.  If a parent had ADD or ADHD the child has a seventy percent chance of also having it.

Studies show that children who exhibit ADD and ADHD qualities do not have the proper nutrients for brain functioning.  Because the body is not receiving important nutrients, the brain can not perform properly.  Many children with ADD or ADHD have lower levels of amino acids and zinc.  Low levels of essential fatty acids (EFAs) also play a very important role in ADD/ADHD.

Another possible factor that may contribute to ADD and ADHD is food allergies.  Take out highly allergenic foods and then watch your child's behaviour then add the foods back in to the diet.  Do this slowly - one food at a time every two weeks.  You may notice a behavior change when adding a certain food back into the diet.  This is how you can determine if a certain food or foods is causing ADD/ADHD symptoms.  Common allergy foods that lead to ADD/ADHD symptoms are chocolate, wheat, corn, eggs, sugar and milk.

It is important to find the causes of ADD/ADHD.  Many professionals prefer other avenues than going straight to drugs for help.  If you can identify the main issue causing the ADD/ADHD then you can hopefully avoid the medications.  Drugs will not cure ADD/ADHD.  They may just help with the symptoms.

Diet

We stated above that Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are very important to brain functioning.  There are low levels of EFAs in children with ADD/ADHD.  The brain cells need fat (Omega 3s-n which are EFAs) to function properly.  The only way to get this Omega 3 fat is through your diet or vitamins.  Good sources of Omega 3 fatty acids are tuna, shrimp and salmon.  Olive oil and walnut oil also provide the Omega 3 fats.

Amino acids are a source of food for the brain.  They are a source of protein for the body and are essential for brain functioning.  You may want to include meat, soy, eggs, fish and dairy into your child's diet.  If you are vegetarian, try brown rice and beans, nuts and seeds.

Along with the amino acids and EFAs, 'B' vitamins, zinc and phosphatidyl serine can be used to help with the symptoms of ADD/ADHD.

If your child exhibits ADD/ADHD symptoms, remember to eliminate high allergy foods adding them back in slowly to find the possible culprit.  Also add in EFAs, amino acids, 'B' vitamins, zinc and phosphatidyl serine.  These steps may be the winning combination to help you avoid medication.

ADD - How Is It Diagnosed?

Word Count:
567

Summary:
An article about how ADD is diagnosed.

Keywords:
ADD, attention deficit disorder

Article Body:
In this next in a series of articles about ADD we're going to discuss how to diagnose if someone indeed does have Attention Deficit Disorder.

First of all, in order to accurately diagnose ADD you need to see your family doctor. This is not something that you can do on your own no matter how well you think you know the symptoms or even if you have it yourself. As was discussed in the previous article, there are other problems that can have the same symptoms as ADD.

For starters, there is no blood test that can determine if someone has ADD. The truth is, there are no definitive tests for most mental illnesses. So the logical question becomes, how does a medical professional diagnose ADD?

Again, you should begin with your family physician. However, if you don't feel comfortable with him for some reason then you can opt to see a specialist in this area. Ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist.

The first thing that should be done is to have a complete physical examination to rule out any medical causes. There are many medical conditions that are similar to ADD. These include the following: autism, hearing impairment and hypothyroidism.

Having a complete physical exam can rule out these other disorders.

The next thing you should do is a complete family history. The main reason for this is that ADD is inherited so by tracing your family history to see if anyone in your family has had ADD it will show how much of a likelihood that your child has ADD as well. Also any special circumstances in the family history like divorce should be discussed as events of this nature can cause significant changes in the child's behavior that, though appear similar to ADD symptoms, are actually as a result of the change in the family situation.

If the child goes to day care or attends school, questionnaires should be given to the teachers or care givers for them to complete. According to the DSM-IV criteria, symptoms have to be present in at least two settings. The reason for this is that a child may simply just not enjoy one particular setting because of the teacher or maybe even just the surroundings, especially if they are not, in the child's eyes, pleasant. This questionnaire will rule out special circumstances being the cause of the symptoms. For example, if the child is having problems at school but not at home, the cause may be simply a matter of being unable to see or hear well enough in the classroom to be able to do the work. Many times, the cause of ADD-like symptoms is that the child simply needs eye glasses. In fact, that was exactly the case of an associate of mine long before they even knew about ADD. He had trouble concentrating in class only because he couldn't see the board and needed glasses. Therefore this questionnaire is one of the most important parts of this process.

Psychological testing should be done also, such as IQ tests. This will show a correlation between the child's test scores and his ability.

Once the doctor has gathered all this information he will compare the results to the DSM-IV criteria for determining if a child indeed has ADD.

In the next of this series we'll discuss how to treat ADD once it is diagnosed.

Title:
ADD - Treatment Through Medication

Word Count:
530

Summary:
Article about treating ADD with various medications.

Keywords:
a

Article Body:
In this third of a series of articles on ADD we're going to focus on treatments for ADD besides simple nutrition.

The most common form of treatment for ADD is through medication.

The underlying theory on ADD is that it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Through certain medications we can correct that imbalance and help a person with ADD to live a normal and productive life.

PET scans of patients with ADD who are taking medication for their condition show that there is significant improvement in many cases.

Medication that is given to treat ADD is to stimulate the production of two neurotransmitters known as dopamine and norephinephrine. These neurotransmitters are needed to carry a nerve impulse along a neuropathway. When one of these transmitters is under supplied the message is stopped short of it's intended destination. When this happens, whatever function that circuit is assigned to doesn't work properly.

Your brain circuits are like a computer circuit. They are either on or off. When a circuit is on it makes something happen, like helping a child concentrate on a math problem or read a passage from a novel. When other circuits are on they prevent something from happening. For instance, some circuits prevent a child from becoming over emotional about an event or situation. If this circuit is supposed to be on but isn't because the transmitter didn't work then the child ends up getting upset where a child without ADD would have remained calm.

Medicines that treat ADD are not sedatives or tranquilizers. They don't slow down the nervous system. What they do is stimulate various areas of the brain to be more active, actually the reverse of a sedative. By being more active, concentration and attention are improved. This medication helps circuits stay on when they're supposed to be on.

The most common medication for ADD is Ritalin, which is a psychostimulant. The drug appears to work very well in treating ADD. However, it has gotten a lot of bad press even though it is relatively safe and very effective. Should Ritalin not work other drugs may be used like antidepressants and beta blockers. These have both been shown to be very effective for certain patients.

Other drugs that have been used to treat ADD are Dexedrine, Desoxyn, Adderall, and Cylert, which are all stimulant drugs like Ritalin. The most common antidepressants are Desiprimine, Anafranil, Elavil, Tofranil, Wellbutrin, Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil. Then there are neuroleptics which were developed to treat serious mental disorders like psychosis and schizophrenia. In patients with severe ADD symptoms these have been very effective treatments. The most common of these drugs is Haldol and Mellaril. However the AMA cautions that these drugs should only be used in the most severe cases of ADD. Then you have mood stabilizers which are lithium based drugs that are very effective in certain cases in calming a child down.

The number of drugs to treat ADD is numerous and growing everyday. With proper diagnosis and testing it is relatively easy to find the right drug for treating the disorder in each case.

In the next article we'll discuss other treatments for ADD.

ADD - Treatment Through Nutrition

Word Count:

Summary:
An article about treating those with ADD through proper nutrition.

Keywords:
ADD, attention deficit disorder

Article Body:
In previous articles we covered what ADD is and how to diagnose it. In this third instalment we're going to begin a series on how to treat ADD.

ADD can actually be battled from many directions. There are drugs, behavior modification, nutrition, exercise, and a number of other things that can be done to combat ADD in both children and adults.

In this article we are going to choose the natural route first and discuss proper nutrition which can have a huge effect on the behavior of someone suffering from ADD.

One of the main contributing factors to children who suffer from ADD is when their blood sugar level, or glucose level becomes too low. This causes them to become sleepy in class and then ultimately restless because they are bored. Glucose is extremely important in determining a child's attention span. This may sound clichéd but the most important meal of the day is breakfast and glucose should be a part of every child's breakfast. This will ensure that the child's blood sugar level is maintained throughout the day. Kids who skip breakfast tend to have a shorter attention span and a harder time remembering things.

Next is vitamin B. Vitamin B is needed because it helps to release the energy in glucose. Without the proper amount of vitamin B in the diet a child can become aggressive and depressed. There are 12 essential parts to vitamin B so it may be difficult for a child to get all the vitamin B he or she needs just from eating, even though cereal is a good source of vitamin B. To supplement the rest a good multi vitamin capsule will do the trick.

Also very important is iron. Iron aids in transporting oxygen to the blood system and the individual cells, most importantly, brain cells. Not enough iron in the diet results in anaemia, which is very common in children who don't have a balanced diet. Anaemic children, as well as adults, are very tired and don't have the energy to do the things that want to or need to do. Good sources of iron are red meat, tuna, chicken and vegetables like broccoli.

Folic acid is also essential as this helps in the formation of red and white blood cells. Not enough folic acid will also make a child feel tired, irritable and forgetful. Fruits and vegetables are good sources of folic acid.

Zinc is needed to maintain communication between the brain cells and the nerve cells. Zinc deficiencies can cause your child to have difficulty in solving academic problems, which can lead to frustration for the child, therefore bringing on ADD symptoms. Zinc can be found in cereals and peanuts.

Vitamin A is important for the nervous system. Vitamin A also helps to strengthen vision. Many times a child will have problems in school because of impaired eye sight. Vitamin A can help to improve the eye sight which in turn will lessen the child's frustration. Vitamin A can be found in carrots and many orange or yellow fruits like bananas.

Proper nutrition is an essential part of a child's health whether he or she has ADD or not. But in children with ADD, proper nutrition is critical.

In the next article we'll cover other treatments for those suffering from ADD.

ADHD, or what's more commonly referred to as simply ADD, is one of the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed diseases in the world. The truth is, most people don't understand ADD and wouldn't recognize a person with it if they saw one. It is the hope of this article and the series to follow, to educate you about ADD, what it is, how it's diagnosed, how it's treated and several other topics that hopefully will aid in your awareness and understanding of this disease.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD or ADD, is a condition where the person with it is unable to maintain attention for an extended period of time. Other symptoms are impulsive behavior and motor restlessness. It is said that about 4.4% of all adults have ADD.

ADD is what is classified as a neurobiological disorder caused by problems in the dopamine neurotransmitter systems in the brain. Most cases of ADD are inherited. If a parent or close blood relative has ADD then there is a 30% chance that a child will have ADD. In studies of twins it is shown that if one twin has ADD there is a 50% chance that the other twin will also have ADD. ADD is not caused by poor nutrition as it was once believed. It is also not caused by bad parenting, drugs or allergies. Other medical conditions may cause symptoms similar to ADD such as severe head trauma, thyroid problems, foetal alcohol syndrome and lead intoxication, so it is important to do a thorough analysis in order to determine if the person has ADD and not one of these other problems.

What happens with ADD is that when a person does not get adequate neuro-chemicals, or in other words, the brain is not being properly stimulated, it tries to find ways to increase their release. Things such as movement, physical activity, focusing on things that are stimulating or doing anything that causes stimulation are various ways that people with ADD stimulate their brains. In a sense this is more a reflex to their not getting the proper neuro-chemicals and not so much a conscious act, which is the reason that people with ADD act in this way and really can't control their actions.

The problems this action causes is that people with ADD, when confronted with a situation that doesn't stimulate them, such as school work, then focus their attention on something that does stimulate them. Obviously when this happens the school work is not attended to and this results in poor performance in the classroom. An associate of mine related a story of this to me, about a child who would get up in the middle of the class, stand on his desk and start telling jokes. At first it was thought that he was just trying to be funny and disrupt the class. As it turned out he actually had ADD and couldn't help himself. This occurred during a time when people really didn't understand this disease.

Other problems associated with people who have ADD is that they have difficulty with personal relationships and staying employed. Also people with ADD may do things to stimulate themselves that are actually reckless and dangerous and thus may further complicate their lives with legal problems.

In the next in this series we'll discuss how to determine if someone has ADD and if diagnosed what steps can be taken to treat it.

Most of us know that losing that excess bodyfat for good will bring us a LONG list of benefits. Lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, decreased risk of some cancers, and so on. Besides just helping us look and feel better, achieving true fitness also prevents bone loss, improves memory, eases the symptoms of menopause, and more! In short, regular exercise and bodyfat reduction will all years to our lives by minimizing so many life-threatening conditions.
Now, thanks to new research from Britain, we can actually say how many years we might gain by losing that excess weight once and for all! Researcher Tim Spector of St. Thomas' Hospital (U.K.) is part of the team that studied 1,100+ British women between 18 and 76 years of age.
"Telomeres cap the ends of chromosomes in cells and protect them from damage. However, each time a cell divides -- and as people age -- these caps get shorter, so decreases in telomere length have long been associated with the aging process.
Reporting June 14 2005, in the early online edition of The Lancet, the British researchers found that telomeres of obese women.....were much shorter than those of lean women...... In contrast, lean women had much longer telomeres than moderately overweight women who, in turn, had longer telomeres than obese women." (Source: HealthDay News)
The researchers found that obese women aged an additional 8.8 years more than lean women (based on telomere length). Wow, 8.8 years!
By the way, this study also focused on smoking and how that impacted aging in women. Perhaps surprisingly, this study found that women who do (or have) smoked aged an additional 4.6 years. What's surprising about this finding is that obesity appears to cause more 'aging damage' than smoking, at least in some women.
There you have it, yet another reputable study proving that regular exercise can add years to our life (and life to our years!). The evidence is absolutely OVERWHELMING: maintaining a fit body through regular exercise will help us live longer!
Besides, we want to look good in a bathing suit this summer!

title:ADD and Coexisting Conditions - Why is it so Complicated?

article:

ADD is often accompanied by a coexisting condition.  On the other hand, often ADD and these other conditions have similar symptoms and, therefore, are easily misdiagnosed.  Of course, this creates a plethora of problems as these disorders, when separate, must be treated differently.  A misdiagnosis will lead to ineffective treatment.  As coexisting conditions, these are especially of concern, because they increase the severity of many of the symptoms of ADD, as well as the negative impact on those that suffer them.
One such condition is Oppositional Defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorder.  Children with this disorder tend to be very aggressive and defiant.  They usually lose their tempers very easily and challenge authority figures.  This is the most easily diagnosable behaviors, as teachers and parents become aware of this conduct quickly and seek treatment almost immediately.  This particular disorder is common in children that are the hyperactive/impulsive type of ADD and occurs in 35% of children with ADD.  This coexisting condition makes it much more likely that these sufferers will get in legal trouble as they age due to their authoritative defiance.
Many children that have ADD also suffer from mood disorders and/or depression.  The complication associated with this coexisting condition is the increased likelihood of suicide common during teen years.  18% of ADD children also suffer from some type of mood disorder, and is it more likely to occur within the inattentive type of ADD.  This is often not as easily diagnosed as compared to other conditions.  Children with mood disorders as a coexisting condition must be treated with different medication than typical ADD treatment; therefore, such therapy may be more difficult.
Also a concern is anxiety disorders among ADD sufferers, which constitutes roughly 25% of those with ADD.  Traits common of Anxiety Disorders are fear, panic, and worry, which may necessitate medication and/or counseling.  As with mood disorders, combined treatment make therapy more complex and arduous.
Learning Disabilities are also conditions common with children that have ADD.  While ADD, in itself, is not a learning disability, it can make it extremely difficult for children to perform well in school.  If coupled with a learning disability, it makes it considerably more challenging for children to grasp academic concepts and utilize such knowledge.
For the most part, coexisting conditions make treatment more difficult and the side effects of both disorders more severe.  The typical signs and symptoms of ADD are difficult enough to deal with, but with more intense severity, it often makes side effects deadly or incredibly negatively life altering.

Unfortunately, Attention Deficit Disorder does not necessarily fade with age.  Many people that suffer as a child will continue to suffer as a teen, as well as into adulthood.  However, this disorder may affect people differently at different stages in their life.
College can be a difficult time for some students.  For many, this represents a time of breaking free and starting their new uninhibited lives.  This may be an exciting and emotional time.  How does a college student with ADD face such a time?
For a person with Attention Deficit Disorder, this may prove to be a harsh time of transformation.  Typically coming from families that were especially doting and accommodating to their situation, they are thrown in to a new environment to fend for themselves.  One of the basic behavior modification techniques in training an ADD child is through structure, routine, and habit.  At once, all of this is taken and it becomes the student’s responsibility to recreate this structured life they once had.  Of course, a person with ADD is typically disorganized and unstructured.  So, they may have a difficult time having the discipline to enact such stringent requirements for themselves.
Another aspect to consider is the increased difficulty in the academic load in college as compared to high school and the additional responsibility put on the students.  Not only will the student be responsible for their own organization and structure, they will do so under more stress and academic pressure.  This increasingly more difficult schoolwork is not made easier by the student’s general inattentive nature, distractibility, and impulsiveness.  The very core of ADD makes college more difficult.  With any luck, the student has spent enough time over the last few years regulating their own behavior that they will easily be able to in this new environment.
For the most part, the same steps should be taken in college to deal with ADD as was necessary in high school and other grades.  To be effective, a student should carry some type of organizational calendaring system or digital organizer.  In college, they do not hold the students’ hands like they do in high school – once an assignment is made, it is expected to be turned in on time, without reminders.  Therefore, it becomes imperative to keep up with deadlines and dates.  Students should also create structure and organization in their dorm or apartment and utilize the same skills they have been developing for years.

Attention Deficit Disorder is often difficult to diagnose in adulthood as it sometimes masked by relationship problems, mood disorders, substance abuse, employment issues, or other psychological disorders. It was previously believed that children and adolescents would grow out of ADD, but it has just been acknowledged in the last few decades that it persists into adulthood. Actually, 67% of children with ADD will continue to exhibit signs well into adulthood. ADD is very difficult to diagnose in adults and sometimes only occurs after a child of the adult is diagnosed and the genetic link is made.

How is Attention Deficit Disorder exhibited in adults? Actually, in much the same ways as in children. Adults with ADD often have difficulty in completing assignments, fail to pay close attention to details, fidget, are inattentive, are unorganized, and talk excessively. Unfortunately, adult ADD is often commingled with lack of self-control, poor memory, anxiety, depression, mood swings, employment issues, chronic lateness, and difficulties regulating motivation, emotions and arousal. Like their child counterparts, these behaviors cause an inability to function in every day activities, which can especially cause a problem in employment situations.

Adults that have grown up being undiagnosed as having ADD often suffer from low self-esteem and feel like they are stupid, lazy, or even crazy. Diagnosing them as adults may lay to rest lifelong perception issues they may have had with themselves and may allow them to improve on self-esteem, as well as work skills and performance. It is believed that these reasons could actually be the basis for the depression and other psychological issues they have as adults.

Treatment for adults often includes medication, education, behavior skill building to better cope with their disorder, and counselling. Stimulant medication, as with children, may be the first stage in treatment. However, this is not a cure and should be coupled with behavior modification to reach full potential. Counseling may very well be an important aspect of treatment, as ongoing psychologically issues have been present. Likewise, just being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder may cause reason to seek counseling in order to come to terms with the diagnosis.

The important thing for an adult to remember when they have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder is that there is help available and treatment is easily attainable. They should find comfort in understanding the root of their behavior and actions and knowing help is available.

When I was a 42 year old woman the awareness that I had ADD, or ADHD to be specific, changed my life forever.  Until that day, I had never even heard of ADD.
ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is not fun.  Not for anyone. I am annoyed when I hear anyone minimizing it or its effects. I am a 53 year old woman who was affected my whole life by an invisible disorder I couldn’t name. I never knew what was wrong with me. I always felt as if there was something, but I never quite knew what it was. I was always complimented on my achievements, capabilities, looks and talent. The compliments somehow felt odd. The outsides looked perfect. I functioned on a very high level- always in the “in crowd”, lots of friends, good schools, nice boyfriends, husbands, career, family, mother, and wife. To the outside world, I was a success in life, highly achieving both personally and in any profession I chose. (And there have been a few.)
The insides were another story.   I often felt overwhelmed by life, terrified of nameless things, anxious, confused, hopeless, resentful, and depressed. I wasn’t conscious of “keeping up the facade” because it never felt like a facade. It just felt like the way it was. This internal conflict was in direct opposition to all of my outward appearances.
School was a nightmare for as far back as I could remember.  Thinking about the struggle makes me uneasy to this day. What do I mean by nightmare? Basically, I never knew whether I was going to retain the information that I was receiving.  As the lecture proceeded, I was still thinking about, processing the first fact or concept that had been presented, while in the meantime, several other facts had been offered and I missed them all.  There were always what felt like gaps and I always felt as if I had to scramble to put them together.  Sometimes I made the Dean’s List with A’s, sometimes I barely passed. I remember always feeling somehow as if it wasn’t up to me.  I just never knew. Consequently, I regularly felt stupid, scared, confused and often inferior.
I was 42 years old when I finally found out what was really wrong with me. I mean really wrong. I had been searching for years. Therapy, group therapy, Alanon, Chit Chat, ACOA, more therapy, psychodrama, career counseling, you name it; I never gave up. The diagnosis in my case was a classic one for an adult. We are often diagnosed when our children are diagnosed. It is hereditary.  At the time, my daughter was in 2nd grade at one of the preeminent public schools in NYC. I always “sensed” that there was something wrong with the way she was learning, processing information or playing from the time she was really little.  Everything just FELT wrong.
The so called” experts” continually and emphatically assured me that it was “just my imagination” and her issues were merely “developmental”. They assured me that she had been tested by “the finest reading specialists in NYC and there was nothing wrong”.  She was outgoing, very social, very bright, socially integrated, and adorable. In fact in nursery school, they moved her quickly ahead to kindergarten because they felt that she was so ready!  From the time she was in nursery school, I would literally feel nauseous whenever I went to her school, whenever I sat in a conference.  I could never quite put my finger on it, but the feelings were very real and very consistent.  I knew that she was never the kind of kid who sat and played with blocks or puzzles but never knew what to do with that information or thought much about it. I remember sitting in a school conference after she had taken her first ERB tests when she was 3 1/2.   The director said that everything was great and as an aside, almost as an afterthought, mentioned that her scores had fallen dramatically on the tasks that she had no interest in. The tests reflected some difficulty with attention.  I remember taking note in my head, but not sharing it because it was a thought without a context.
I wanted badly to believe all of the so called experts and educational professionals. After all, I had always felt that anyone in a position of authority naturally knew more than I did. I tried but things with my daughter were not improving. She was still struggling with reading and organizational skills and the pain for me was getting greater. It’s interesting as I look back to know that the pain that I was experiencing through her was all of those unresolved years of my own pain. It was certainly not clear at the time. The only thing that was very clear was that something was not right. That’s all I knew.  I finally sought help outside of the school with a psychologist who was recommended to me by a friend.  She said that it might be nothing more than an eyelash. But, she said, an eyelash could drive you crazy so we decided to take a look and see. I felt very relieved because I intuitively sensed that I was in the right place.  I somehow just knew.  She spent some time testing my daughter, then 7 years old, and diagnosed her with ADHD ( Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) which as I mentioned, until that day, I had not ever heard of.  No one had ever mentioned it- not the experts, not the schools, none of the therapists that I had seen over the years, no one. She diagnosed me simultaneously and I had what I have learned is a classic response to this awareness. It was as if the flood gates opened up, the bright lights went on. After all of these years, I knew what was wrong with me. I wasn’t crazy. I wasn’t stupid. I wasn’t even confused. I had a neurological disorder with a name that appeared to be the cause of most if not all of the underlying negative feelings about my own behavior that I had been living with and compensating for all of my life. I knew that I was not alone and I knew that there was hope. It wasn’t my fault and there was nothing wrong with me except exactly what was wrong with me which suddenly became OK.
Since my diagnosis, I have stopped wondering, searching and feeling shame about my very existence. I learned that ADD is a neurological disorder and has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence.  It has to do with brain wiring and body chemistry.  I learned that there is no blood test and that it is diagnosed through symptoms which must have onset before the age of 7 like impulsivity, difficulty sustaining a single task or getting organized,  interrupting constantly, a sense of underachievement and a tendency to be easily bored.  I learned that there is an 80% correlation between ADD and substance abuse and depression/anxiety disorders. I began to read everything that I could get my hands on, went to CHADD meetings and began to be very verbal about this.  I began to address my shame- the all pervasive feeling that told me that I was fundamentally flawed.  I not only began to advocate for my daughter in school, I began to advocate for myself both at work and in my personal relationships.
My life is no longer an uphill climb.  I would have to say that I am happier today than I have ever been in my life. I see a therapist regularly who is trained in and very knowledgeable about ADD and I am on medication prescribed and monitored by a medical doctor. My daughter is doing great.  She takes her Ritalin as prescribed and is an integrated, socially adept, well adjusted, happy kid.  I can accept the eclectic person I am today with love and kindness.  I often feel a sense of well being and peace and no longer castigate myself  for walking on the planet.  I find joy in living and feel hopeful much of the time.  The inner voices are much more gentle and continually remind me that all is well.

Adequan is an injectable substance, which is very similar to the more conversant oral supplement called ‘glucosamine’. Adequan is also known as ‘polysulfated glycosaminoglycan.’

Adequan has been proven to be specially absorbed by inflamed joints when interjected into the dog’s muscles. It pacifies and lubes the joint, reducing swelling and soreness by repressing friction in a natural way. It also helps to restructure cartilage in the damaged joint. It’s not just pain reliever, its therapy.

In treating inflammation of a joint or joints (arthiritis), injections are given two times a week for at least 4 weeks for a maximum of eight injections. Injections are given intramuscularly to dogs, cats, and horses suffering with arthritis. A human product has freshly joined the market.

Adequan does all this without potential fallouts. To know its possible side effects, a study was conducted on 24 dogs receiving Adequan injections, one dog developed a painful injection site, one developed looseness of the bowels (diarrhea), and one developed abnormal bleeding. All side effects were classified as mild and none of them required any cure.

Some humans who have used Adequan have reported that it burns a little. After injecting, Adequan upsets some dogs’ stomachs for a short time. In very rare cases it can cause low platelets, and this is a condition that is reversed upon discontinuing the drug.

Adequan binds to damaged cartilage and advances cartilage metabolism, easing repair processes. Simultaneously, it blockades the activeness of unhelpful enzymes, which encourage joint inflammation, collapse the synovial fluid, and harass the cartilage. Adequan energizes the synovial tissue layer to fabricate novel synovial juice to reinstate the thin, degraded fluid of joint disease. By doing all this, Adequan helps lubricate, nurture, and clear the cartilage.

Adequan has not been analyzed in pregnant or breastfeeding animals. At first 8-dose series is suggested: 2 mg/lb intramuscularly twice a week for four weeks. Adequan Canine is boxed in 5 mL (100 mg/mL) multidose vials.

Adequan, also known as Adequan Canine, is a steroid used for treating a disease called Canine osteoarthritis which is generally seen in pet dogs. The disease results in joint failure, loss of mobility and gives a feeling of inflammation with pain. It is generally caused by loose joints or slack ligaments.

You must check out the symptoms of Canine osteoarthritis, so that you should be able to recognize the disease and give the necessary treatment to your dog immediately. Canine osteoarthritis begins with pain and inflammation. The pain may make your pet limp, or lazy. Your pet may feel difficulty in walking, getting up, jumping – into the car or climbing the stairs. Any of these symptoms in your pet indicate that your dog is ailing from Canine osteoarthritis, which is pretty similar to the condition that ails millions of American humans, Arthritis.

Manufactured by Luitpold, Adequan Canine is an injectable steroid that is chemically known as “polysulfated glycosaminoglycan,” quite similar to the familiar oral supplement known as glucosamine. Adequan Canine comes as 100 mg/mL that is meant for veterinary use only. It is often administered to dogs ailing from inflamed joints.

Adequan Canine comforts pain and reduces inflammation by lubing the joints and reducing friction. It not only helps to reduce pain, but also helps to rebuild cartilage in the damaged joint. Adequan is very effective in repairing damaged cartilages. It helps in keeping the joints intact, bonded and lubricated and helps to relief the dog from continuous inflammation and pain. So, Adequan Canine is not just pain control, it's a therapy.

Adequan Canine injections are given twice a week for 4 weeks to treat arthritis. These injections are given intramuscularly to dogs, cats and horses. A human product has recently joined the market.

However, Adequan Canine injections are reported to be causing side effects. An experimental study conducted on 24 dogs that were given Adequan injections showed that one of the dogs developed pain on the site where he was given the injection, one developed abnormal bleeding and some others showed looseness of the bowels. Some of the possible side effects associated with Adequan Canine are vomiting, bloody diarrhea, kidney and liver damage, and even death. The people using Adequan complained of burning after taking the injection.

Introduction
There are a number of controversial areas in medicine when it comes to ADHD.  Food allergy is certainly one of them.
The classic allergic reaction, which is classified as the type-1 hypersensitivity reaction, can be elicited by food, but this is fairly uncommon.  When we discuss food sensitivities in ADHD we are discussing a different, not well-defined, mechanism.
One of the main progenitors of the food allergy/ADHD connection is Dr. Doris Rapp.  Dr. Rapp was a pediatric allergist who noticed that many children in her practice had significant physical and behavioral changes when exposed to certain foods.  They may have red ear lobes, dark circles under their eyes, or glazed eyes after eating certain foods.  These children could have tremendous swings in behavior.  They can be calm one minute and wildly hyperactive a few minutes later.
To make it more interesting, children with food allergies usually crave the food that affects them negatively.  That means a child who is allergic to peanuts will demand peanut butter and jelly for lunch everyday, and for the rest of the afternoon you have to peel him off of the ceiling.
What is Food Allergy?
The classic allergic reaction operates through a very specific mechanism.  The reaction is caused when a specific type of antibody, called IgE, reacts with a specific provoking substance called an allergen.  The result of this interaction  is an allergic response and the person is deemed allergic to that allergen.
The specific type of antibody involved in classic allergy is called IgE.  The proposed antibody mechanism for this type of food allergy does not involve IgE, but a different antibody called IgG.  This is significant because standard allergy testing tests only for IgE antibodies.  If your child has IgG mediated sensitivity, his allergy test is going to miss it.  That means that your child may have a severe allergy to a specific food, but your allergist will tell you he is not allergic to it.
Why the Controversy?
Reason 1:  Diagnosis
I said this was a very controversial area of medicine and here is one of the reasons why.  Food allergies are very difficult to diagnose.  One reason is that the symptoms wax and wane.  When a child has a classic allergy, for example to bee stings, then every time a bee stings him, he will have a reaction.  Food allergies don’t work that way.  There seems to be a threshold that must be exceeded before there are any symptoms.  In addition, this threshold seems to vary from day to day.  On some days a food will affect the child, and on other days it won’t.  Dr. Rapp explains this phenomenon using the analogy of a barrel.
We can view each allergic child as if he has a barrel.  As long as the barrel is empty or only partially full, your child will have no problems.  Your child won’t become hyperactive until his barrel is overflowing.
Various things will fill your child’s barrel.  Let’s say your child is sensitive to chocolate, cats, and peanut butter.  Each of these things all can partially fill his barrel.  As long as he only has peanut butter or only plays with the cat, his barrel is only partially full.  That means that there are no symptoms and that his behavior is fine.  Then, one day he has a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, has chocolate ice cream for dessert and plays with the cat all afternoon.  These things in combination make his barrel overflow, and by evening he is out of control.  Your child has food allergies, but sometimes they affect him and sometimes they don’t.
The barrel can change sizes.  If your child has a cold or is upset his barrel gets smaller.  It takes less to make it overflow.  If he is happy his barrel is bigger.  It takes more to make it overflow.  If he isn’t eating well and that day he is low on certain nutrients his barrel gets smaller.
Many traditional allergists find this barrel concept ludicrous.  It doesn’t fit into the pattern of how other allergies work.
Reason 2:  Method of Diagnosis
The next problem is the way in which you test for food allergies.  Dr. Rapp describes a technique called provocation-neutralization testing.  This method works as follows:  Say that a child frequently has headaches after eating eggs. The practitioner will give an intradermal injection of egg extract.  If this elicits the child’s headache, then the child tests positive for egg allergy.  Other signs of a positive test include an increase in pulse rate of 20 points, a large skin  reaction (this indicates a classic IgE reaction), a change in the child’s handwriting, or some other physical or emotional complaint.  This last criterion “some other physical or emotional complaint” is problematic.  It is too vague.  The result is that when studies compared how several physicians evaluated the same group of patients, their results didn’t agree.  For each patient if there were twenty different doctors with twenty different sets of findings.  None of their diagnoses matched.
Reason 3:  The Mechanism
As I mentioned before, the proposed mechanism is an IgG mediated response.  Some food allergists diagnose specific food allergies by measuring IgG levels.  This runs counter to all of modern allergy practice.
Allergists give allergy shots to treat allergy.  The way this works is they give a low level of allergen, which is not enough to elicit an IgE reaction.  The dose is slowly increased until eventually the patient can tolerate a significant exposure to the allergen.
This is how it works.  The repeated low-level exposure to the allergen induces the body to make a different antibody to the substance.  This antibody attaches to the allergen and deactivates it before IgE can cause the allergy reaction.  What is this antibody that allergists try to induce to cure their patients of their allergies?  You guessed it, IgG.  So the very antibody the traditional allergists have been inducing for decades to successfully treat allergies, the food allergy people claim is the antibody guilty of causing allergies.
For a traditional allergist this is nothing short of heresy.  IgG has been used for decades to treat allergies successfully.  Comes along Rapp and her friends and they claim that IgG causes allergy?  This is a little hard for some people to accept.
Just how strongly do allergists reject this idea?  I once tried to contact an Israeli physician who was a food allergy specialist to discuss with him provocation-neutralization testing.  I called the hospital where he is on staff and asked to  speak with him.  For some reason the operator instead put me through to the head of the Department of Allergy.
I began discussing with him the theory of food allergies, provocation-neutralization testing and IgG testing.  He told me that he was the head of a committee of allergists who were in the process of testifying before the Israeli Knesset to get legislation passed to make IgG testing illegal in Israel.
Can you imagine?  You visit a prison in Israel.  In one cell there is car thief.  In the next cell there is a mass murderer.  And in the next cell there is a guy who tested someone for food allergies.  Now that’s pretty strong opposition!
Do Food Allergies Really Exist?
The formal medical societies like the AMA claim there is no such thing as food allergies.  Rapp and her friends have been screaming for decades that they do exist.  So, what is the bottom line?  Does it really make sense that what a child eats can affect him so strongly that experts will diagnose him as having ADHD?
We know that the brain is a highly complicated and sensitive organ.  We know that many foods have a physiological effect on the body without inducing a classic allergic response.  For example, people who are sensitive to monosodium glutamate can have a severe reaction to eating it.  The chemicals in red wine affect certain people.  We also know that ingesting certain foods alters brain function.  Diet has been proven to influence neurotransmitter function.  Components of foods can also be used as drugs.  For example, tryptophan, tyrosine, and choline have been used in the treatment of sleep disorders, pain, depression, mania, hypertension, shock, or dyskinesias.
The logic of Rapp’s argument is so strong and there is enough circumstantial evidence, that I feel that the question is really the other way around.  We know that the brain is intricate and has tremendous metabolic requirements.  We know  that some people have very strong reactions, including behavioral changes, to certain foods.  These things are undisputed.  If it turns out that foods do not elicit significant problems in sensitive children, in my opinion, we would need to explain why not!
Are we really seeing an allergy mechanism to food?  I prefer to stay out of that debate.  Rather than be ostracized by the doctors who specialize in allergy, I feel it is safer to call them food sensitivities.  There are no doctors who specialize in sensitivity.
Does Your Child Have Food Sensitivities?
A large number of ADHD children may be having a negative response to food, and this response may be the primary cause of their ADHD.  In what type of child should you suspect food allergies?
The following is a list of symptoms that resulted from food allergies in certain children:

Hyperactivity
Changes in mood
Halitosis
Sleep disturbances
Delay in sleep onset
Migraines
Other headaches
Abdominal pain
Bedwetting
Tantrums
Eczema
Asthma
Seizures

Research shows that by treating the food allergies all of these symptoms can be relieved.
If you see your child’s symptoms in this list it is possible that food allergies may be contributing to his problem.  If your child also has other allergic problems, such as allergy or asthma, then food allergies are almost certainly contributing to his problems.
What Should You Do?
As I wrote in How to Help the Child You Love, there are a number of approaches to diagnosing food allergies.  None of them are well substantiated and all of them have difficulties.  Yet, many people find that these diagnostic techniques worked for them.  Therefore, I’d suggest you could use them provided you have it on good authority that the person administering them has a strong record of success.  In my experience, these techniques are more of an art than a science.  They really depend upon the talent of the diagnostician.
As I said last time, the best approach to finding food allergies in your child is an elimination diet.  It doesn’t really matter which one you choose.  I prefer the three that I outline in How to Help the Child You Love. (see http://addadhdadvances.com/childyoulove.html)
Conclusion
Researchers claim that the percentage of ADHD children whose behavioral symptoms are affected by foods ranges from 60% to 75%.  This, however, is probably not an accurate number.  Parents who consent to have their children participate in diet studies usually believe they have observed food-induced problems in their children.  Therefore, children who participate in these studies are more likely to respond to foods than the general population.  The truth is we do not know what percentage of ADHD  children will respond to dietary changes, but it seems that the number is significant.
Treating the food sensitivities in  ADHD  children has a number of advantages over using medication.  One major advantage all the current methods of treatment can be used to treat pre-school children.  Most clinicians do not use medication on pre-school children.  A more significant advantage of treating food allergy is that when it works, it works all day.  In contrast, Ritalin wears off in about 4 hours.
All this, of course, is providing that food allergies really do exist.
The main thing to remember is that if you think your child has food allergies, then the biggest mistake you can make is to go to an allergist.  They don’t believe in food allergies.  And whatever you do, do not go to an allergist and ask to have your child provocation-neutralization tested for food allergies.  He is going to laugh at you.
Food allergy is an alternative medicine diagnosis.  Still, there are physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating these sensitivities, but they no longer call themselves allergists.  Rapp and her group were so ostracized by the formal  allergy societies that they eventually broke off and formed a new field called Environmental Medicine.
Therefore, if you want a physician to treat your child you need to find an Environmental Medicine specialist.  They are not so common, but they are around.
As I mentioned before, there are a number of approaches to treating food sensitivities.  The one you can do yourself is to use an elimination diet.  I devoted a large section of How to Help the Child You Love describing exactly how to use elimination diets to diagnose and treat food sensitivities.
In the final analysis, I feel it is fair to say that many ADHD children have sensitivities to the foods they eat.  These sensitivities may exacerbate their ADHD symptoms.  I won’t go so far as to say that food allergies cause ADHD.  That means that if your ADHD child has severe food sensitivity, treating that sensitivity may not get rid of his ADHD.    However, until you treat his food allergy, nothing else you do will really help your child’s ADHD, either.

article:

About 8% of children, ages 4 years and under, are deficient in iron.  Between the ages of 5 and 12, the percentage rises to 13%, and then settles back to 8% in people above the age of 15.  Anemia is the best-known repercussion of iron deficiency.  However, even minor deficiencies in iron may weaken the immune system, affect the thyroid, and impair general physical performance.  Iron deficiency has also been implicated in a number of psychiatric and neurological conditions, including learning disabilities  and ADHD.
Iron is a co-enzyme in the anabolism of catecholamines.  That means it is essential for the creation of certain neurotransmitters.  It helps to regulate the activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which probably accounts for the  association of iron deficiency with neurological problems.  It makes sense that supplementing ADHD children, who have some  level of iron deficiency, might have some effect on their ADHD.  However, what makes sense in theory, does not always work in practice.  Unfortunately, there have been very few studies done testing the effects of iron supplementation on ADHD.
One study, done in Israel, evaluated 14 ADHD boys for the effect of short-term iron administration on behavior. Each boy received iron daily for 30 days. Both parents and teachers assessed the behavior of the children.  The parents found  significant improvement in the behavior of the children.  However, the teachers noticed no improvement.
In a second study, 33 iron-deficient, but otherwise normal, children were given an iron supplement.  The children became less hyperactive.  This study suggests that iron deficiency may cause hyperactive behavior in some children and that hyperactive behavior is reversible when the deficiency is treated.
A third study tested the affects of iron supplementation on a group of teen-aged high school girls who were determined to be iron deficient.  At the end of the 8-week study, the researchers found that girls who received iron supplementation performed better on verbal learning and memory tests than those who did not.
This is about all the evidence we have.  It’s not a lot and it’s not very impressive.  None of the studies were double-blind studies, which means we cannot really rely on them all that much.
If this were the only consideration, I would say you should definitely try to treat your child for iron deficiency.  The reason is that hyperactive children are more likely to be iron deficient than other children.  Also, there is a possibility that your child has a higher than average iron requirement.  That means that he might test normal on all the iron blood tests and still be iron deficient because he requires more than the average amount of iron.
So why not just give your child iron supplements and see what happens?  Because iron functions in the body like a two edged sword.
Iron exists in the body in two chemical forms.  There is the ferrous form, where the iron atom will bond to two electrons and the ferric form where the atom will bond to three electrons.  Iron can go back and forth between these two forms.  This is the property of iron that allows it to play a role in carrying oxygen as part of hemoglobin.  However, it also makes iron an active player in oxidation-reduction reactions.  What that means is that iron has the ability to act like a free radical and cause significant damage to tissues.  Whenever iron is not bound to hemoglobin or to some other carrier protein, it travels around the body as free iron and can cause damage anywhere it goes.  To further exacerbate the problem, excess iron is not eliminated well by the body.  Most of the iron in the body gets recycled.  Therefore, not only is excess iron toxic, but also once you have excess iron in your body, it is going to stick around for a long time.  High amounts of iron have been ! found in the brains of people with Parkinson’s disease.   It is very likely that excess iron can aggravate, if not cause, other neurological problems as well.
With that in mind we have to approach iron supplementation with caution.  My feeling is that if your child turns out to be one of the 8-13% that is deficient in iron, it is worth giving iron supplements.  I doubt that it will help much with his  ADHD, but it should help with his general health.  This advice applies to your non-ADHD children, also.
How should you test iron deficiency?  The hemoglobin and hematocrit counts that come as part of the standard complete blood count (CBC) are good for diagnosing anemia.  They do not really give you accurate information about the body’s iron status.  The best test for iron status is the serum ferritin test, which measures how much iron is stored in your body.  It will be low if you are deficient and high if you are overloaded.
If you find your child has an iron deficiency problem, there are several approaches to treat it.  Probably the safest is by giving him more iron-containing foods.  You can serve him red meat several times a week.  Liver is an excellent source, if you can get him to eat it.  You can enhance dietary absorption by supplementing with vitamin A (about 10,000 IU) and vitamin C (about 500mg) with the meals.
The most likely the reason that your child is deficient is because he is a poor eater; so, dietary intervention may not be practical.  A second and far inferior source of iron is through supplements.  The primary difficulty of iron supplements is that they do not get into the body.  Fortifying foods with iron in general does not work.  Many foods bind iron and, as a result, the iron is excreted rather than absorbed.  The best form of supplemental iron is Ferrochel.  Ferrochel is an amino acid chelated iron, which is highly bio-available and is not affected by foods that bind iron.
Most iron supplements have a ten percent absorption rate.  That means if you take 10 mg of the supplement, your body absorbs 1 mg.  Ferrochel is different. Ferrochel has a 75% absorption rate.  That means 1.5 mg of  Ferrochel  provides more iron to your body than 10 mg of other supplements.
That is an interesting fact, but it is not why I am recommending it.  The more important property of Ferrochel is that since it is already amino acid bound, it does not become free iron in the body.  That means it does not have the dangers and side effects of other iron supplements.  The FDA has given  Ferrochel the designation of GRAS, (generally regarded as safe).  No other iron supplement has this designation.
The take home message is that iron deficiency may be the cause of hyperactivity in some children.  It is worth your while to have your child tested.  If for some reason you suspect your child is iron deficient, the best approach is to increase your child’s iron intake through his diet.  If that doesn’t work and you need to use supplements, the best supplemental iron is Ferrochel.

(NC)—Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is thought by some to be an "academic" disability causing difficulties with attention and concentration in the classroom. However, ADHD is more than just an academic issue, it is a neurobiological disorder caused by chemical differences in the brain. Untreated, it may affect all aspects of the lives of those with ADHD, including his/her social interactions, extra-curricular activities and family relationships. ADHD requires continuous symptom relief to improve the overall functioning of a child.
Studies have shown that children with ADHD who do not receive treatment run the increased risk of accidental death, injury, sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse and criminal activity, along with causing marital difficulties for their parents. Social abilities and development of strong interpersonal skills are also at risk. Many children with ADHD have few friends and suffer from low self-esteem.
Proper diagnosis can help those with ADHD put their difficulties into perspective and provide a better understanding of many ADHD symptoms. Although more formal checklists are used in assessing ADHD, the patient support group CHADD, Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, lists the following core symptoms:

Poor attention to detail
Fidgeting
Difficulty sustaining attention
Poor listening skills
Difficulty following instructions
Difficulty engaging in leisure activities quietly
Poor organization
Always "on the go"
Excessive talking
Losing things
Easily distracted
Impatient
Forgetful
Interrupting others

Proper treatment of ADHD can manage symptoms and provide children with a chance to fulfill their potential. Research shows the greatest improvement in ADHD symptoms results from a combination of counseling and medical treatment.
All medications currently approved to treat ADHD belong to a class called stimulants. A number of new investigational ADHD treatments offer great promise and in the future Canadians will have more choice in ADHD treatment.

What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, also referred to as ADHD and formally called hyperkinesis or minimal brain dysfunction is a neurologically based syndrome characterized by any or all of three types of behavior: hyperactivity, distractibility, and impulsivity.
ADHD is usually diagnosed before age seven. It is often accompanied by a learning disability. It often create difficulties in school, at home, or at work.
Not everyone who is overly hyperactive, inattentive, or impulsive has an attention disorder. People with ADHD are excessive and have long-term periods of hyperactivity, inattentiveness and impulsiveness. Eating too much sugar does not cause hyperactivity. ADHD is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain.
How is ADHD Diagnosed?
ADHD is a diagnosis applied to children and adults who consistently display certain characteristic behaviors over a period of time. The behaviors must be excessive, long-term, pervasive, a continuous problem, and not occuring in other people of the same age.
What are the Symptoms?
The most common behaviors fall into three categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
Inattentive.
Inattentive refers distraction by irrelevant sights and sounds or carelessness and inability to carry simple tasks to completion. People who are inattentive have a hard time keeping their mind on one thing and may get bored with a task after only a few minutes. They may give effortless, automatic attention to activities and things they enjoy. Focusing deliberate, conscious attention to organizing and completing a task or learning something new is often difficult.
Some signs of inattention are:becoming easily distracted by irrelevant sights and sounds.
Failing to pay attention to details and making careless mistakes rarely following instructions carefully and completely losing or forgetting things like toys, or pencils, books, and tools needed for a task.
Feeling restless, often fidgeting with hands or feet, or squirming running, climbing, or leaving a seat, in situations where sitting or quiet behavior is expected blurting out answers before hearing the whole question and having difficulty waiting in line or for a turn hyperactivity.
Hyperactivity refers to feelings of restlessness, fidgeting, or inappropriate activity (running, wandering) when one is expected to be quiet. People who are hyperactive always seem to be in motion. They can't sit still.
They may dash around or talk incessantly. Sitting still through a lesson can be an impossible task. Hyperactive children squirm in their seat or roam around the room. Or they might wiggle their feet, touch everything, or noisily tap their pencil.
Hyperactive teens and adults may feel intensely restless. They may be fidgety or, they may try to do several things at once, bouncing around from one activity to the next.
Impulsivity.
People who are overly impulsive seem unable to curb their immediate reactions or think before they act. They may blurt out inappropriate comments. Their impulsivity may make it hard for them to wait for things they want or to take their turn in games.
What Causes ADHD?
The exact cause of ADHD is unknown.
How is ADHD Treated?
Treatment usually includes behavioral therapy and emotional counseling and medication. Two of the most common medications that are prescribed are: Stimulants and Antidepressants.
Stimulants decrease motor activity and impulsivenss and increase attention span and concentration. The usual dosage is 2-3 times a day.
Antidepressants can be used if the patient does not respond to stimulants. Antidepressants work by decreasing hyperactivity. Side Effects of Treatment? Antidepressants and Stimulants may cause headaches, upset stomach, loss of appetite, tiredness and difficulty sleeping.
Statistics
1 in 4 children with ADHD have a parent who has or has had ADHD In about 10% of the cases, ADHD can persist into adulthood.

Adjustable Beds - Not Just For the Elderly!

Word Count:
1201

Summary:
Understanding the many sleep and health benefits from a qualtiy Adjustable Bed and tips on what to look for.

Keywords:
Sleep, health, beds, mattresses, air mattress

Article Body:
In an ever increasing market for the ultimate Sleep System, most people still believe that the Adjustable Bed which was originally used in Hospitals and Homes for the Elderly are still that. A bed that can help the elderly in and out of bed! Although they are extremely helpful in these situations, they can also be very important for anybody in today’s lifestyle.

Now any sincere knowledgeable mattress salesman won’t push the watching TV or reading in bed, it’s not something that we should recommend. But with today’s lifestyles, this has become a normal way of life for some people. Sitting in bed watching TV, working to make the big deadline is OK, if that’s your choice. But propping up two pillows every 3 minutes is probably not doing any good to your back or any other part of your body for that matter. If this sounds like you, maybe your next mattress purchase should have an adjustable base as well.

There are many “side affects” from poor sleep and sleep habits that might also be a clue for you to check out the benefits of the adjustable bed. Some of the health issues are back problems, neck and shoulder pain, arthritis, circulatory problems, gastric reflux at night, snoring, breathing problems. Not only does an adjustable bed provide serious convenience with regards to helping people in and out of bed but there are many health benefits that can be taken advantage of for anyone.

Tossing and turning at night on their mattress is the most common reason that people don't sleep well at night. The main reason people toss and turn at night is pressure points; traditional coil and spring mattresses put pressure on different areas of your body causing restricted circulation to those areas, when your body becomes uncomfortable you turn to a new position. Another reason for tossing and turning is improper spinal alignment. All traditional mattresses are flat but our bodies are curved, the traditional mattress fails to offer the lumbar region enough support often allowing your lower back and hips to sink below the rest of your body. This causes pressure and discomfort in that area which causes your body to turn to a new position.

Adjustable sleep systems offer you several great benefits. Obviously, the adjustable base is only that, an adjustable base. To get all the benefits out of your adjustable base you need the proper mattress to work with it. Together they can create a totally pressure free environment while you sleep. Many studies have been done with the space program; the best known is the creation of memory foam. But there is more that was learned from the way astronauts sleep in space. Well our astronauts sleep in a totally pressure free environment experience all the time, floating in space. In studying the way astronauts sleep in space we have discovered a few interesting things. First off, their heads stay slightly elevated allowing for easier breathing. Secondly and probably more importantly, we see that their knees naturally bend and elevate slightly above the heart. This position takes pressure off the spine and allows for increased blood flow to the heart.

Only an adjustable bed can mimic this extremely comfortable and healthy position. Keeping your body in our natural sleep position reduces the pressure on your skeletal frame more than 85% ensuring you will get the deepest most restful sleep possible.

What to Look For

An adjustable sleep system consists of two parts, the base and the mattress.

The Base: There are really two types of adjustable beds, the commercial model used in Hospitals and regular consumer models. The commercial product is very heavy duty and usually has rails on the sides to help someone pull themselves up. These models are extremely expensive and are not very esthetically pleasing for home use, unless your health requires it.

- Concentrate on the frame construction; you want the heavy duty construction with the look of an elegant piece of furniture. Preferably, a regular box spring appearance giving you the ability to dress it how you like it.
- Look for quality motors at the “head and foot.” Make sure they are UL Listed and CSA approved. Preferably a Freefall Design so the head and foot sections lower by gravity only, this will ensure the motor gets extended life. Also ensure that it’s equipped with insulated rubber wheels for smooth, quiet operation.
- A Polarized “Modular” electrical system is the way to go as it ensures you won’t have any stray wires and with the plug-in feature makes service a snap.
- Look for at least a 50 degree incline at “both head and foot”, 60 degrees is optimal.
- Make sure the legs have threaded glides allowing you to adjust the height of the bed to your liking.
- Now depending on your preference, make sure there’s the availability of a massager. I don’t know about you but I like the massager, it provides that little bit extra pampering you need at the end of some days. Some brands you have no choice, either you get it and pay for it or you can’t get it. Having a choice is always nice.
- Same goes for the remote, it’s nice to have the choice between wired or wireless.

The Mattress: Your mattress is the single most important component of any bed, adjustable or not, even if your foundation was the corner of 4th and Main. The proper mattress should provide the proper support, pressure relief and spinal alignment even in this situation.

- Many companies only offer coil and spring mattresses with their adjustable bases. This is not exactly the best case scenario. The coil and spring mattresses are not very pliable and don't really work well with an adjustable base and often need replacing every five years.
- There are other very luxurious choices “at a fraction of the price” that you would benefit from with use of your adjustable base. All are designed to offer you pressure relief, proper spinal alignment and a more breathable sleep surface. Air Mattress Beds work well with the adjustable base when they are equipped with horizontal chambers, the chambers follow the contour of the bed nicely. Although this works well, it’s still not the optimal choice.
- Try looking at a Memory Foam or Latex mattress, these mattresses are made from highly specialized foams and are more durable and pliable than coils and springs, as a result they will work in unison with the adjustable base to provide you with the ultimate adjustable sleep experience. Not to mention your mattress will most probably last for its intended life and these foam mattresses can go for twenty years.
- The final tip is to stay away from the deal that promises, “Mattress Included” rarely does this mean your getting any quality in the mattress they’re giving you. Just “FOAM” doesn’t mean Memory or Latex foam; check it out to make sure.

So depending on your lifestyle or if your health dictates (I hope this isn’t the case) check out all the health and convenience benefits of a quality adjustable bed, but don’t forget the “quality” mattress!!

Adjustable beds by their very existence as mechanical marvels of design and function are perfectly adapted to alleviate many different symptoms associated with varied conditions that lead to back pain. If you suffer from lower back pain, your condition may be the result of a multitude of causes, many of which the sufferer has no clue as to how they got them in the first place.

The causes associated with back pain include muscle spasm or sprains, ligament sprains, joint problems or a slipped disk. Actual physical disability from instances such as work related accidents are another well-known cause of back pain. In all these instances, an adjustable bed can help alleviate your sore aching back. Why can an adjustable bed help you? You do not have to take my word for it. I am not a medical expert. But I do know how to quote them.

Through my research, I have found that medical experts advise that the best way to ease back pain is to position yourself with your back on the floor, with pillows under your knees, hips and knees bent, with your feet raised on a chair. Now imagine yourself in that position. Looks rather awkward, doesn’t it. Can you imagine doing this every time your back begins to act up? Now imagine yourself, if you can, in an adjustable bed perfectly aligned to provide the same comforting relief. Looks a lot better on an adjustable bed than on the floor, doesn’t it

There are other tips from medical advisors on relieving back pain. Heating pads are recommended to relax painful muscle spasms and medications such as Motrin, Aleve, Aspirin, Orudis and Tylenol, also reduce pain and swelling. Once again, an adjustable bed can help you!

Some adjustable beds, more notably electric adjustable beds, come equipped with soothing heating units built in. Some electric adjustable beds even have a vibrating feature to massage away that nagging sore back. As far as any relief you may get from taking medications, the adjustable bed manufacturers haven’t come up with anything to replace them yet. You will just have to place them on your night table next to your adjustable bed.

Adjustable beds come in a multitude of different shapes and sizes, models and types to fit most any budget. There are basic, hand operated adjustable beds, basic electric adjustable beds that elevate and configure themselves at the push of a button on a remote control unit, to the top of the line, everything you could ever want in an adjustable bed, electric adjustable bed. This type of electric adjustable bed will have all the bells and whistles and awe inspiring electronic gizmos, but will also carry a hefty price tag. But if you can afford it, go for it. After all, it’s your back that’s hurting.

For more serious back conditions as in the case of a person with a debilitating physical impairment, getting a hospital adjustable bed would be advisable. These adjustable beds are constructed far more sturdily in order to continual use in an acute care situation. If you find that an adjustable bed is just a little too pricy for you, there is an alternative and I don’t mean lying on the floor with your feet propped up on a chair.

If the price of the adjustable beds you like is out of your reach, you can always look for a good, used, cheap adjustable bed. I wont go into the details of how to get your hands on one of these cheap adjustable beds, other than to say that there are articles available that go into the specifics. Getting a good, used adjustable bed at a good price is not as hard as you may think.

One thing to remember, regardless of which adjustable bed you finally decide to buy, you will need a new adjustable bed mattress to go along with it. A mattress from an average flat bed will not fit or function properly on an adjustable bed. Just as with adjustable beds, there are varying degrees of quality, materials and prices associated with adjustable bed mattresses.

So, in closing, I say, let the shopping begin. You’ll only have your back to thank you, but it will be well worth it.

Article Body:
Adjustable gastric banding surgery is now one of the most popular methods of restrictive weight loss surgery in the UK and Europe. gastricv banding or bariatric surgery is a surgical procedure specifically designed to assist in wieght loss for obese or morbidly obese patients who generally have a body mass index (BMI) of between 35 to 40 or sometimes a little higher.

The Gastric banding appliance itself is an inflatable prosthetic medical device which is placed around the opening and top section of the patients stomach . A tube is connected to this banding devices via a tiny keyhole laparoscopic surgical procedure. Once the gastric banding device is in situ around the top of the stomach the gastric banding device is then filled, or inflated with fluid which then creates a small area at the upper end of the stomach. The gastric banding device is usually inflated and adjusted through a small access port which is normally located just under the surface of the skin in the abdominal area of the patient. A solution of saline or other non toxic solution is introduced into the banded area via this port to fill the pouch. A specialized surgical needle is used to avoid any damage to the portal membrane and any adjustments must subsequently be undertaken by a qualified gastric banding Surgeon or one of His assistants who have been specially trained in this procedure. There are several port designs in common use today, which may be placed in varying positions, according to the surgeons own personal preference and experiences in managing these types of procedures. The port is generally stitched into place to maintain the stability of the portal access point, and also to avoid any accidental damage by the Patient in their normal every day life.

This pouch normally 'fills' with food quickly as the patient eats and thereby restricts further passage of food from the top to the bottom area of the patients stomach. Once the gastric Banding is applied to the patients stomach, that part of the stomach sends a subconscious message to the brain receptors that the stomach is full. This sensation is interpreted by the brain as a message that the stomach is now full. This in turn helps the patient to eat smaller portions of food and fluids, with the resultant effect of providing the required weight loss over time.

When fluid is introduced into the band, the band itself inflated further, and as it expands it places additional pressure around the outside of the banded stomach area. This then decreases the size of the passage between the two areas of the stomach thereby restricting the movement of food into the lower part of the stomach. Over a period of time this restriction is often increased until the patient feels that they have reached a point where optimal weight loss can be reached for them, with the minimum amount of fluid required. This is an individual preference, and several visits and consultations are generally required to fine tune the tightening of the band and the amount of fluid content required for each individual patients overall comfort and weight loss targets

The Main benefits provided by Gastric Banding Surgery is that it does not require any major surgery cuts, nor is it necessary to remove any part of the digestive system of the patients. Furthermore Subsequent Removal of the Band is possible, but this does require a further keyhole surgery procedure to be performed to remove the device. Once the Gastric Banding has been removed from the patient the stomach usually returns to its normal pre-banded state over time without any known problems to date.

COMMON GASTRIC BANDING PROBLEMS

It is unusual for gastric banding patients to experience any nutritional deficiencies following gastric band surgery. "Gastric dumping syndrome" issues also do not normally occur with gastric banding surgery, since no parts of the intestines or indeed of the stomach need to be removed or re-routed.

However weight regain is possible as with ANY weight loss procedures including gastric banding. Some of the more radical procedures can initially result in rapid weight loss but this is normally controlled and managed well in Gastric Banding situations. World Health Organization recommend that monthly weight loss of ½ to 1 kilograms per week should be a general target weight loss for the average Gastric banding patient generally, and then the (Patient) should have no problems to lose this amount of weight, however this can be very variable, and in accordance with the individual patient, their personal life circumstances, their personal attitude and mobility.

A commonly reported occurrence for gastric banding patients is regurgitation of non-acidic food from the upper pouched area. This is commonly known as Productive Burping. If the gastric banding Patient experiences this regularly, then they should consider eating less, eating much slower, and chewing their food much more thoroughly. If this does not eventually solve the problem then further medical advice must be obtained from your Practitioner or gastric banding surgeon.

Occasionally, the narrow passage at the Banded are of the stomach can become blocked by a larger portions of un chewed or unsuitable food. If this occurs on a regular basis then further adjustments to your diet should be considered, and once again you are strongly advised to consult your gastric banding Reactionary or dietician.

I some cases Ulceration or Gastritis Erosion can occur as the band can wear and aggravate a small area on the outside of the stomach wall which can then, in very rare and extreme cases, lead to a migration of the band itself into the inside the stomach. This however is a very very rare occurrence and usually there are many warning signs well in advance of this ever happening.
Slippage of the gastric Band is also an unusual occurrence. This when the lower part of the stomach may prolapsed over the band devices and cause an obstruction. Once again however this a very rare occurrence and warning signs are usually noticed well beforehand.

Psychological effects of any weight loss procedure may also be considered. Many Patients who have been Obese for extended periods of time prior to the gastric banding surgery procedure, have been habitually overeating for a greater part of their lives, therefore any sudden changes to their diet and lifestyle can have some adverse affects on the Patient.

Your adrenal glands are two tiny pyramid-shaped pieces of tissue situated right above each kidney. Their job is to produce and release, when appropriate, certain regulatory hormones and chemical messengers.
Adrenaline is manufactured in the interior of the adrenal gland, called the adrenal medulla. Cortisol, the other chemical from the adrenal gland, is made in the exterior portion of the gland, called the adrenal cortex. The cortex also secretes androgens, estrogens, and progestins. Cortisol, commonly called hydrocortisone, is the most abundant -- and one of the most important -- of many adrenal cortex hormones. Cortisol helps you handle longer-term stress situations.
In addition to helping you handle stress, these two primary adrenal hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, along with others similarly produced, help control body fluid balance, blood pressure, blood sugar, and other central metabolic functions.
In the heightened nervous state of adrenal burnout, the body overproduces adrenaline, cortisol and other stress hormones. Constant stress and poor nutrition can weaken the adrenal glands. Eventually, this causes the adrenal glands, the front line in the stress reaction, to show wear and tear and become depleted. This frequently leads to impairment in the thyroid gland, which can cause a further decline in energy level and mood and is one of the reasons why many people have thyroid glands that don’t work well.
When stress continues over prolonged periods of time, the adrenal glands can deplete the body's hormonal and energy reserves, and the glands may either shrink in size or hypertrophy (enlarge). The overproduction of adrenal hormones caused by prolonged stress can weaken the immune system and inhibit the production of white blood cells that protect the body against foreign invaders (in particular lymphocytes and lymph node function).
Adrenal dysfunction can disrupt the body's blood sugar metabolism, causing weakness, fatigue, and a feeling of being run down. It can also interfere with normal sleep rhythms and produce a wakeful, unrelaxing sleep state, making a person feel worn out even after a full night's sleep.
Common Causes of Adrenal Stress
• Anger
• Fear / Worry /Anxiety
• Depression
• Guilt
• Overwork/ physical or mental strain
• Excessive exercise
• Sleep deprivation
• Light-cycle disruption
• Going to sleep late
• Surgery
• Trauma/injury
• Chronic inflammation
• Chronic infection
• Chronic pain
• Temperature extremes
• Toxic exposure
• Malabsorption
• Maldigestion
• Chronic illness
• Chronic-severe allergies
• Hypogycemia
• Nutritional deficiencies
Testing for Adrenal Health
In order to determine the health of your adrenal glands you need to have a simple blood, urine, or saliva test performed by your practitioner. Cortisol levels can be checked by blood or throughout the day by a saliva test. DHEA, and Epinephrine, are some other indicators of adrenal function.
Associated Symptoms and Consequences of Impaired Adrenal Functioning
• Low body temperature
• Weakness
• Unexplained hair loss
• Nervousness
• Difficulty building muscle
• Irritability
• Mental depression
• Difficulty gaining weight
• Apprehension
• Hypoglycemia
• Inability to concentrate
• Excessive hunger
• Tendency towards inflammation
• Moments of confusion
• Indigestion
• Poor memory
• Feelings of frustration
• Alternating diarrhea and constipation
• Osteoporosis
• auto-immune diseases/hepatitis
• Lightheadedness
• Palpitations [heart fluttering]
• Dizziness that occurs upon standing
• Poor resistance to infections
• Low blood pressure
• Insomnia
• Food and/or inhalant allergies
• PMS
• Craving for sweets
• Dry and thin skin
• Headaches
• Scanty perspiration
• Alcohol intolerance
Treatment
Lifestyle changes such as:
Eating steadily, all day long. Skipping meals is one of the worst things you can do for your body. When you're hungry, your blood sugar drops, stressing your adrenal glands and triggering your sympathetic nervous system. That causes light-headedness, cravings, anxiety and fatigue. Another drawback to skipping meals: The resulting low blood sugar can affect your ability to think clearly and shorten your attention span.
Skipping breakfast is particularly bad, as it is a sure fire way to gain, not lose, weight. If you start each morning with a good breakfast and "graze" healthfully every two to four hours, your blood sugar will remain steady throughout the day. You'll feel more rested and energetic.
Eat protein with every meal. Eat Complex carbohydrates such as brown rice. Avoid sugar, junk food, white pasta, white rice, white bread.
Absolutely NO Caffeine. Coffee/Sodas over stimulates your adrenals and they deplete important B vitamins.
Coffee does not give you energy; coffee gives you the illusion of energy. Coffee actually drains the body of energy and makes you more tired, because of vitamin and adrenal depletion.
Exercise to relax. Walking, Yoga, deep breathing, meditation, or stretching. No vigorous or aerobic exercise, which depletes the adrenals.
Avoid alcohol, processed foods, and tobacco. Nicotine in tobacco initially raises cortisol levels, but chronic use results in low DHEA, testosterone, and progesterone levels.
Reduce stress; learn relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation.
Helpful Supplements
The use of small amounts of natural adrenal hormone (hydrocortisone) to bring slightly low adrenal function up to its proper normal daily range is often helpful.
Take a daily multivitamin to provide nutritional support to the adrenal gland.
Vitamin C 1,000-3,000 mg a day
L-Theanine 100-400 mg a day
Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) 300 mg a day
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), no more than 1000 mg of glycyrrhizin

Adrenal Fatigue occurs when your adrenal glands - 2 small glands that sit on top of your kidneys - become overworked and depleted. Your adrenal glands are responsible for handling the stresses of your daily life, whether that be physical stress, emotional stress, or psychological stress.

When your adrenal glands become overworked, they cannot keep up with the stresses of your everyday life. You then start to manifest the symptoms of adrenal fatigue.

Note that just because you have one or two of the symptoms of adrenal insufficiency does not mean that you have adrenal fatigue. However if you find you have the majority of these symptoms then you may want to investigate further.

You'll want to learn some of the common causes of adrenal fatigue to see if you can identify with any of these causes in your own life. You'll also want to see your doctor for a full medical workup and diagnosis of adrenal fatigue.

Here are the key symptoms of adrenal fatigue:

You're Tired For No Explainable Reason

People with adrenal fatigue experience extreme physical exhaustion and they don't have an explanation as to why (such as a strenuous workout). This isn't just everyday tiredness it is extreme exhaustion.

You Gain Weight Easily - Especially Around the Middle

People with adrenal fatigue often notice they gain weight very easily. They especially notice the extra weight around the middle - and it's very hard to lose it.

You Have Difficulty Rising In The Morning

Those with adrenal fatigue often find they feel tired when getting up in the morning - even with a full night's sleep. They often need stimulants like caffeine and sugar to 'get going' both in the morning and throughout the day.

You're More Susceptible To Flus and Colds

If you have adrenal fatigue, you may notice that you seem to be catching every flu and cold that comes within 10 feet of you. You'll also notice that it seems harder for your body to bounce back from illness.

You Often Feel Overwhelmed and Run Down

People with adrenal insufficiency often feel run down and overwhelmed with the tasks they have to accomplish. They may feel as if they can't keep up and do it all. (This can lead to other symptoms like depression and social withdrawal)

You May Crave Salty or Sweet Snacks

This may include high protein snacks like meat or cheese. Some people with adrenal fatigue can have an increased craving for salt. You might also notice an intense craving for sweets and fast carbs like donuts, chocolate bars, pastries, ice cream etc.

You Feel Better In A Less Stressful Environment

Many people with adrenal insufficiency feel better when on vacation. Their symptoms may even clear up entirely but then return when they go back to their normal lives.

You Are Troubled By 'Brain Fog' or Inability to Concentrate

This may include things like the inability to remember certain details, appointments, etc. This may also include a feeling of confusion or difficulty concentrating.

Increased PMS For Women

Women with adrenal disorder may find their periods become heavier and/or irregular. They may also notice increased PMS mood swings and/or food cravings.

Those are several key symptoms of adrenal fatigue. Other symptoms include:

Lightheadedness/Low Blood Pressure

Tendency to Tremble When Under Pressure

Reduced Sex Drive

Heart Palpitations

Nervousness/Raw Nerves

Poor Digestion

Feel Most Energetic in the Evening

Extremely Senstive To Cold

If you can identify with the majority of these adrenal fatigue symptoms you may want to read about the causes of adrenal fatigue to see if you can identify with any of them in your own personal life. You'll also want to see your doctor for more tests and a complete diagnosis.

Adrenal fatigue can be overcome and you can feel better. Listen to your body, cut back on stress and treat yourself well.

title:Adults Don't Get Acne! Do They?

Skin problems not only effect those in their teens, adult acne is also a very common occurrence, in today's society. Adult women are more apt to suffer from acne than men. Adult men are at higher risk in terms of permanent scaring, caused by acne problems. Contrary to what most people think, adult acne is NOT caused by improper hygiene.
In truth, acne is caused by a number of different things. Oily skin, hair ducts that do not close as they should and infection are three key factors which lead to skin problems. These factors remain the same, in both adults and teens. (How's that for thinking you wouldn't get acne, because you are an adult.)
Pimples occur when dead skin, small deposits of fatty tissue and keratin get clogged in a hair duct. When the duct is open, this clogging produces a "blackhead". When the duct is closed, it is referred to as a "whitehead". Because a whitehead is closed, in most cases, it will eventually rupture. This bursting causes the redness and infection of adult acne.
There are many myths associated with adult acne. Dermatologists tell us that acne is not caused by eating chocolate, fish or oily foods. Stress, in itself, does not cause acne. However, there are certain stress-relieving drugs that have been known to cause skin conditions.
Acne does not clear up faster if you wash your face several times a day or sit out in the sun. Acne is not caused by dirt. Washing your face many times a day can actually do more harm than good. Sitting in the sun only darkens your skin and can cause scaring.
Remember, if you are battling a skin condition, you are not alone. There are numerous ways to treat the problem. You do not have to live with adult acne forever!

Acne has always been a dreaded occurrence in our life. Most of us have carried this burden in our teenage years and after almost seven teenage years we think we are finally home free. Then one morning in your twenty sixth, twenty seventh or even twenty eighth year of your existence you wake up with a huge zit on you face. And even worst, sometimes it is not just one but two or even three or even four! And they just keep on sprouting like weeds in an inhibited garden! So you wonder, I’m already an adult so why, why, WHY?
Adult acne is more common than we thought. Almost five percent of adults have adult acne mostly in their twenties, thirties and even forties and beyond. Adult acne can be found in the face and sometimes even on the neck and on the chest and back area. There are many reasons for the occurrence of these devils incarnates and we will enumerate them here plus ways on how to outsmart them.
Adult Acne Source Number 1: those pesky hormones
And we all thought we are done with having problems caused by them! Apparently, they still have a last attack. Experts still can’t pinpoint the main reason why our oil glands are more prone to breakouts because of hormonal shifts in this age line. Unfortunately, these up and down hormonal shifts are the main culprit in adult acne. But fortunately, there’s an easy cure for these shifts and that is the common birth control pill. But take note that this is not applicable to you if you are pregnant. For stubborn and hard to kill zits, you may also use medication that has the ingredient retinoids that can help unclog those pores. If still doesn’t work then it’s high time to up your ammunition. Use antibiotics (may be topical or even oral) to reduce the swelling.
Adult Acne Source Number 2: stress
Stress is also a major source of adult acne. But we can’t help it, can we? Our world is full of stress inducing situation and things that it is already a part of our daily lives. We have bills to pay, kids to feed and a house to clean. So much stress we endure in a day that it results to the dreaded adult acne. This happens because stress triggers the body to secrete cortisol that results in the secretion of more hormones thus resulting to zits. So what do we do when the bump pops? Relax! Do some de-stressing. Go on a vacation or just spend a day doing nothing. Eat right, sleep right and do your exercise routine regularly. If your darn acne are still there after doing these things for a month or two then it is high time to see your dermatologist for some treatment and prescription.
Adult Acne Source Number 3: Daily Grooming Products
It is a fact that as we grow older we tend to become more vain especially in our twenties to thirties when we are still finding our ideal mate. We tend to use a lot of products to make ourselves more attractive to the opposite sex. Unfortunately, this only results to adult acne as these products tend to block pores which can result to zits erupting like crazy in our pretty little faces. How ironic, isn’t it? We bought and used these products to make ourselves more pretty only to have these little craters embed in our face. So what to do? Simplify! You don’t need all these products to make yourself pretty. Just use basics like moisturizer, cleanser and sun block. Purchase cosmetics that are noncomedogenic and make sure that they are oil free especially your moisturizer. And always remember your acne 101: do not touch your face or rest your pretty little chin in your grubby little hands!

Are you one of the millions of adults who have acne? Many adults are dealing with acne, the first signs of wrinkles and grey hair all at the same time – talk about physical and emotional tolls. Life just seems too unfair at times. Fortunately, there are some simple solutions for treating acne. Really. You don’t have to live with it.
To properly treat acne, one must first understand what causes it. When hair follicles and sebaceous glands become inflamed acne follows soon after. Sebum is an oily substance made by the sebaceous glands. Bacterial growth and inflammation result when too much sebum is produced. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the four basic mechanisms contributing to acne are hormones, increased sebum production, changes inside hair follicles, and bacteria.
These simple solutions require persistence and consistency.
First things first, talk to a Dermatologist. A Dermatologist can provide you with the best solutions for you based on your medical history, age, skin type etc. Depending on the severity of your acne and your individual circumstances, your Dermatologist may want to prescribe an antibiotic, a vitamin A derivative like Isotretinoin, or one of the other acne drugs now available.
Use non-comedogenic products. Non-comedogenic basically means - not likely to block the pores of the skin, or cause blackheads or acne. There are many non-comedogenic products available today, including, makeup, foundation, moisturizers, sunscreen, lip stick, etc. If it’s something that you apply to your skin you should be able to find a non-comedogenic version. In fact, you can also find non-comedogenic and medicated makeup with acne fighting ingredients like, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and sulfur. These products shouldn’t clog your pores and should help treat acne.
Proper skin care is also very important. Gently washing with a facial cleanser that contains benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or sulfur will also kill the bacteria that causes acne. Proactiv Solution is one such product that is used my millions of people – with great results. Whatever product you decide to use, do not scrub your face as this can irritate your skin and make your acne worse.
Even though there is no cure for acne, there are several effective methods available today to treat it. By discussing your acne with a Dermatologist you can determine the best course of action for you. In the mean time, keep your chin up – there are treatments available that will help you with your acne situation. Imagine waking up one morning and noticing how clear your face is becoming. It really is a great feeling!

While it is true that acne most commonly appears during the teenage years, it is just as true that a large percentage of individuals suffer from adult acne. In fact, figures show that as much as 25 percent of men and 50 percent of women in their twenties up to their fifties still experience pimple flare-ups. Adult acne can have just as much negative psychological effects as adolescent acne – perhaps even more so. The stress of having a career or raising a family is bad enough. Having to deal with an unsightly skin problem at the same time would be even worse.
Adult acne can be caused by several things, one of which is mental stress. The body can react to stress by increasing the secretions of the skin’s sebaceous glands or by releasing more hormones from the adrenal glands. Oils from the sebaceous glands can block pores, while a greater amount of hormones in the body can cause hormonal imbalance – both of which can give rise to acne flare-ups or exacerbate an existing acne condition.
It is not surprising that women suffer from adult acne more than men do, since women are more prone to hormonal imbalance. It is known that changes in hormone levels can occur during menstruation and pregnancy. But men, too, are subject to hormonal changes, though not to the extreme level that most women undergo. In any case, hormones play a great role in the occurrence of acne in adults.
Lifestyle and environmental factors also contribute significantly to the emergence of adult acne. A diet that is poor in the necessary vitamins and minerals can wreak havoc on how the body’s organs functions. The skin, being the largest organ in the body, needs nutrients in order to work effectively. If the skin is unable to metabolize or secrete the waste products that it needs to because of poor nutrition, acne can result. Habits such as smoking and drinking can also affect the skin’s condition and its resistance to diseases like adult acne.
What is the best way to deal with adult acne? Like many other ailments, prevention is the key. Make sure that a proper diet is being followed; get enough rest; try to find ways to alleviate stress; maintain proper hygiene to prevent dust from accumulating and blocking the pores. Washing the face once or twice a day and using hypoallergenic or noncomedogenic cosmetics and other personal care products can go a long way towards preventing adult acne.
Treatment options abound for persons with adult acne, however mild or severe their condition may be. Dermatologists may recommend anti-acne medications to be taken in conjunction with other skin care products. More severe cases – such as those involving infection – can be treated with antibiotics to prevent complications. Very severe cases of adult acne have several therapeutic regimes, such as microdermabrasion and laser surgery. A person suffering from adult acne, whatever the level of severity, should consult a dermatologist or other qualified professionals to get the treatment option that is the most suitable for him or her.

Being an entrepreneur and having adult ADHD symptoms means one thing: you've got to be ten times more vigilant about not getting distracted...
Because the challenge with working on your own--especially if you have adult ADHD symptoms--is overcoming distractions. It's the little stuff, those sneaky little killers, that will destroy you!
What do I mean by "sneaky little killers?"
Let’s say you’re working on one project for the day. Let’s say your project is a simple project like putting up a webpage, just as an example.  How can you get something like that done without getting distracted?
When you have to:
feed the dog,
do the dishes,
go to the post office,
answer your messages,
file some paperwork,
get some lunch,
dryclean your suit...
If you have adult ADHD symptoms, you know how deadly these things can be.
And if you have adult ADHD and you're an entrepreneur, like me, it's these sneaky little things that will prevent you from ever getting to your really important work, ever achieving the Big Picture...
Either that, or you:
forget to eat,
don't answer your messages,
throw your paperwork away...
Sound familiar? If you have adult ADHD symptoms, it will! What can you do?
There is a simple technique that's worked for both myself and my clients like a charm, and you can make it work for you. Especially if you have adult ADHD symptoms, this can be absolutely essential.
It’s called outsourcing, and you can do this at home or at work (if home is work, so much the better).
How? Here's two examples that anyone, even with severe adult ADHD symptoms can use, both at home and work:
Technique #1: Outsourcing at Home:
"Outsource the Dishes."
Actually, this applies to any housework including cooking that you don't have to do yourself. By the way, outsourcing can mean to other people in your family, too. That’s okay.  You have to do things a little differently if you have adult ADHD symptoms.  Outsourcing means paying someone else to do the things that get you distracted.
Maybe you’re talking about your kids. You say, “Hey, how much would I need to pay you a week in order to take care of the dishes every night?” Or, walk the dog, go to the post office, etc.
These are things you can also ask a partner or roommate to do, too. Think about what your time is really worth, then imagine what you could get done if you didn't have to think about these sneaky little killers anymore. Be creative about it! Who can help you, and benefit as well?
Technique #2: Outsourcing at Work:
"Outsource the Paperwork."
I’ll give you an example for this one.  My friend is building a home, and that means getting new mortgages, filling out applications, getting all the necessary information to go on a loan application of multiple pages. It takes time and it’s a huge distraction.  So, he paid his bookkeeper to do it and really, it has changed his life.
Is that really his bookkeeper’s job?  Is that what he hired his bookkeeper originally to do? No, its not. But he found someone who would happily deal with the paperwork. This is a good example of being creative (which is actually a very common trait in people with adult ADHD symptoms).
--So there are two concrete ways entrepreneurs with adult ADHD can make their lives less cluttered and distracting.
Even if you don't have ADHD symptoms, this is very helpful; but I've found for those dealing with adult ADHD it's an absolute lifesaver.
But, what if you can't pay for outsourcing?
What if you're an entrepreneur with adult ADHD symptoms but you don’t have a lot of finances to pour into this technique? Not everyone has the immediate resources to pay to get things outsourced, but you still have to contend with your ADHD symptoms...
What happens then?
It is very possible for people with adult ADHD to do outsourcing without a penny, and in fact it's one of my favorite ways to do it. My article "Adult ADHD Entrepreneurs: 3 Magic Outsourcing Tips" talks about this in detail and you can find it through my resource box below.

A bit like the elephant on the dinner table that families don't talk about, adult ADHD is something that people often know is there but don't necessarily talk about.
But at some point they say "Okay, this exists. This is a problem.  I don't know if this has been a problem that has been genetic, or what, but what I do want to know is the answers to some of these questions about why I'm struggling with these ADHD symptoms."
Recently, ADHD Secrets did a worldwide survey in which they asked 30,000 people who have ADHD symptoms or think they have adult ADHD, what their ADHD symptoms are and what kinds of problems this causes in their lives, both at home and at work.
One respondent wrote in that because of adult ADHD, it had taken him literally over an hour to write an email that was one sentence long.
Can you imagine?
One hour to write one sentence, just because his ADHD symptoms made him unable to deflect daily distractions.
But if you or someone you know has adult ADHD symptoms, you probably have a similar story yourself--reasons why you didn't complete that paper for school, for example, or can't get your bills paid on time...
But is it really adult ADHD that is causing your problems?
I'm not going to tell anyone that they have adult ADHD. I have absolutely no interest in doing that...
I have had ADHD symptoms since I was born. So, on top of my experience helping people with my Hyperfocus program, what makes me qualified is I know adult ADHD from the inside.
I've had ADHD symptoms all my life, I have what for convenience I will call adult ADHD--whether or not I believe it is a "disorder" or a natural brain state category or what. What I am interested in is helping people overcome their adult ADHD symptoms and go on to be confident, fully successful and functional adults.
If you have a problem with focus, if you procrastinate, if you find yourself getting distracted, then you're exhibiting some of these adult ADHD symptoms and that's exactly what the techniques I have developed are designed to overcome...
But at the moment, maybe you are thinking, OK, so if I do have ADHD symptoms, or think I really have full-blown adult ADHD, what is something I can do about my ADHD symptoms right away, today, not tomorrow, but immediately?
Well... I am going to give you a quick way to get started changing things today, actually USING your ADHD symptoms. Here we go...
The number one thing if you are saying "Do I have adult ADHD? Don't I have adult ADHD?" Throw that out the window. Technique number one is to say, "What are my strengths? What am I really, really good at?" Write that down on a piece of paper. ok...
Here is the second question you are going to write down: "What are my weaknesses?"
Here's the trick. This is where adult ADHD symptoms which some people might be embarrassed or ashamed of become your single biggest asset.
Let me explain.
Look at the difference between someone who is "easily distractible" and someone who is extraordinarily good at "multi-tasking."
What's the difference?
One's a skill, one's a disability, but it's the same skill set. Think: what skill sets have you developed already, because of your ADHD symptoms?
You can transform those ADHD symptoms into your own ability to accomplish whatever it is you wish to accomplish, whether it's financial freedom, getting straight A's in school, maintaining a relationship, holding a job, whatever it is...
People with adult ADHD often have amazing drive to succeed. And once they learn how to make their ADHD Symptoms into strengths, they are unstoppable!
Once you realize that your ADHD symptoms can be your advantage, you have made the most important decision right there: to stop seeing yourself as a victim of adult ADHD symptoms, and see yourself as a person with amazing potential for success in anything you do. All you have to do is reach out and grasp this knowledge, and you've taken the first step, you're on your way.
