title:Contact Lenses in Silicone Hydrogel – the Vision of the Future?
author:Dr Bianca Tavares
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

Contact lenses manufactured from silicone hydrogel represent the most important advance in soft contact lens technology in recent years. Wearers would obviouly prefer lenses they can sleep in with total safety, so it was only a matter of time before the industry developed a safe product for continuous wear. After years of ongoing development and testing, such lenses are now readilly available for everone to wear at an affordable price. This article looks at what’s so special about silicone hydrogel lenses and why they might be just the right choice for you.
The concept of lenses made from silicone hydrogel was first proposed over 20 years ago. The potential benefits were clear but the technological challenge was as difficult as needing to combine oil and water to produce an optically clear product. Researcher organizations have to date invested considerable academic and financial resources to achieve the high performance soft lenses of today. They have done this quite simply because they see this material as the way forward and the ultimate standard of the future.
At the time of writing, silicone hydrogel lenses are available in the USA from four manufacturers: "Night & Day" and "O2OPTIX" from CIBA Vision, "Pure Vision" from Bausch & Lomb,  and "Acuvue OASYS" and "Advance" from J&J Vision Care.
So what’s so special about silicone hydrogel as a lens material? Essentially, the great benefit of this material is it’s ability to transport oxygen to the eye and thus maintain proper eye health. Modern contact lens technology is all to do with oxygen permability, which is measured using the "Dk" index. And for optimal oxygen transmission, this must be as high as possible.
The Dk of traditional, non-silicone based hydrogel lenses is directly related to the amount of water that the material can hold, since oxygen dissolves into the water-component of the material and thus diffuses through the lens. The Dk in fact increases logarithmically with increasing water content. Water itself has a Dk of only 80, thus placing a ceiling on the Dk of convential materials, and the original soft contact lens material, polyHEMA, possesses a Dk of only around 10 (with a water content of about 38%).
However, in silicone hydrogels, the relationship between Dk and water content is  the opposite. Here higher water content implies lower Dk. With these lenses Dk increases significantly as the silicone content - not water content - of the lens increases. The Dk values of silicone hydrogel contact lenses are much higher than those of older soft lens materials.
According to market data from CIBA Vision, 84% of soft contact lens wearers occasionally sleep with their lenses in, and one-third admit to doing this regularly. 25% of wearers of one to two-week disposable lenses with low oxygen transmissibility occasionally or routinely sleep in their lenses overnight. And 72% of soft contact lens wearers said they would prefer to be allowed to wear their lenses overnight provided it was safe.
Thus the demand for lenses with the capablities of silicone hydrogels is evidently very high with almost three-quarters of soft lens wearers wanting to be able to sleep in their lenses.
Silicone hydrogel lenses are significantly more rigid than their conventional counterparts, due to the presence of silicone. This increased rigidity does possess some advantages, making the lenses markedly easier to handle and thus the ideal choice for wearers with a less delicate touch. There is a downside to this however in that the rigidity makes the lenses less prone to adopting the shape of the eye so readily, resulting in the possibility for some of reduced comfort.
Historically, the deposition of proteins and lipids has been a problem with contact lenses. The amount of depositions is essentially linked to the duration of wear, the lens material and the tear composition of each individual wearer. With traditional lenses, a frequent replacement schedule greatly reduces the buildup of harmful  deposits.
Silicone hydrogel contact lenses have been proven to offer major benefits in the reduction of protein and lysozyme deposition. Indeed, combined with the correct replacement schedule and appropriate care system, problems associated with protein deposition have become almost a thing of the past.
A problem frequently encountered by wearers of traditional soft contact lenses is one of a feeling of discomfort and "grittiness" in the eyes towards the end of the day. It has been reported that after one week wearing silicone hydrogel lenses, the quantity of regular soft lens wearers in a particular study group who previously suffered significantly from end-of-day dryness, was reduced dramatically to only 13% of the sample.
Silicone hydrogel contact lenses also provide some benefits that conventional lenses don't. Continuous wear contact lenses can be particularly beneficial for use by members of certain professions, such as medical workers, police, the armed forces and firefighters who frequently work unpredictable and long hours.
Furthermore, an increasing numbers of contact lens wearers can now enjoy active outdoor lifestyles, enjoying pursuits such as camping and hiking where it is often difficult to handle and disinfect the lenses with the appropriate level of hygiene.
There is much evidence to suggest that, owing to their significant benefits over conventional soft lenses, silicone hydrogel lenses will ultimately, and sooner rather than later, displace other types of contact lens as the prefferred choice for both daily and overnight wear for the majority of contact lens wearers. Silicone hydrogel lenses provide a much improved physical performance, excellent handling properties and greater comfort. They might be considered as the ideal lens for general purpose use that exists today and are likely to become the new everyday standard.
title:Controlling Acne
author:Lori Stryker
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11
article: affects a majority of teenagers and many adults well into middle age.  It is dreaded and despaired over by many who suffer from this common skin condition.  Clearing acne begins by understanding what acne really is and what triggers it.  Then we will consider how it can be controlled by lifestyle choices, skin care choices and wise use of make-up.
Who suffers from it?
Teenagers struggle with acne, but so do many adults. Acne breakouts can result from fluctuating hormone levels at various stages of life, such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause.  Outwardly, acne can reveal internal signs, such as poor elimination or buildup of toxins, a lack of exercise or high stress levels.  Both men and women contend with acne, and as good health and beauty are intertwined, the causes of acne can reveal the solutions to managing and reducing skin breakouts.
What is it?
Acne occurs when the oil glands produce excess sebum, the skin's own oil, which accumulates with dead skin cells to form a plug which results in a clogged skin pore.  Bacteria trapped inside the pore feed of the sebum mixture, multiplying and producing agents which irritate the walls of the pore.  As the immune system works to attack the bacteria, pus is formed leading to an inflamed pimple, blackhead or whitehead.  Picking or squeezing a pimple can cause the pore to rupture, releasing the bacteria into the surrounding area, and can cause more pimples, cysts or scars.   For many, certain areas of the skin have overactive sebaceous, or oil glands which produce excess sebum.  These areas are typically the forehead, nose, cheeks and/or chin.  Comedones, or blackheads, are not caused by dirt, but rather by sebum which has clogged a pore, oxidized and discoloured by melanin.
What triggers it?
Often a spotty complexion denotes a diet high in sugar or saturated fats found in fried foods, refined or processed foods.  Conversely, a diet low in fat may lack  essential fatty acids, and can also affect the appearance of the skin.   Breakouts can  reveal toxin buildup, resulting from constipation, kidney or lymphatic problems.  Other triggers include a polluted, dry environment, and seasonal climate changes.   Genetics also determines whether a person will be predisposed to acne breakouts.  In general, acne is caused by a combination of four main factors:

Skin Care
Emotional State

We cannot change our genetics, but we can change the other three factors to help reduce the likelihood of acne breakouts.
How can acne be controlled?
Skin needs to be cleansed, fed and nurtured.  Externally, the skin benefits from a simple regimen:

Cleansing with a mild, slightly acidic and all natural soap.  Other kinds of soaps can cause redness, soreness, irritation or tightness because of the harsh chemicals, colorants detergents and fragrances they are made with.  Avoid any products which contain ingredients which may irritate or dry out the skin.  Most often culpable ingredients are petroleum derived, synthetic or animal based.
Tone with an alcohol-free, all natural toner, since alcohol is drying to the skin and will cause the oil glands to produce more sebum.  Toner also helps reduce the bacterial population on the skin, decreasing the number of bacteria which will migrate into the pores.
Moisturize with a petroleum free cream.  Petroleum is comedogenic and can clog pores unnecessarily.  Creams which contain natural waxes such as beeswax do not have a comedogenic effect on the pores.  At night, massage a facial oil into the skin as this helps increase circulation to the surface of the skin and suppresses the oil glands from producing excess oil.
Once per week, use a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells which accumulate at the surface of the pores and lead to blackheads.   A mud mask used once every couple of weeks also helps draw out sebum in the pores as the clays present in the mask are highly absorbent.

Internally, the skin is fed and cleansed by a diet rich in fresh fruits, whole grains and vegetables.  These foods provide more water, nutrients and  fibre into the diet and can make a remarkable difference in the appearance of the skin.  Relaxation, adequate sleep, exercise and stress reduction also play an important role in keeping the skin clear and healthy as they assist the body to repair and detoxify itself.
Seasonal or climate changes, such as winter and humid summers in addition to dry, polluted environments also contribute to acne breakouts by drying out or irritating the skin.  As the skin is exposed to dry temperatures  moisture is lost through the skin, triggering the oil glands to produce more sebum.  Keeping the skin clean and moisturized is essential to preventing the pores from  becoming clogged with excess sebum.  In humid conditions, the skin loses moisture through sweat and evaporation, triggering the same process which can lead to breakouts.  Moisturizing and regular cleansing in dry, humid or polluted conditions can reduce the onset of acne.
Makeup can also trigger breakouts.  If they contain comedogenic ingredients, such as those derived from petroleum, they may contribute to acne despite a clean and healthy skin regimen or lifestyle.  Choose all natural makeup which is in harmony with the rest of your skin care regimen and less likely to contribute to breakouts.
Acne treatments which contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide worsen acne, as these are skin irritants and very drying.  Tea tree essential oil is a natural alternative, and works by  sterilizing the infected area upon contact without damaging the surrounding skin cells.  It can also prevent microbial growth in that area for hours.  Other treatments for acne include hydrocortisone which thins the skin over time, or antibiotics which can contribute to microbial resistance in the long term.  Hormone treatments work by decreasing testosterone levels in the body, since this is the hormone responsible for sebum production.  There are natural alternatives to aid in controlling acne, such as tea tree, lemon and juniper berry essential oils.  These are effective and much safer to use for treating acne.
Acne can be a source of frustration for many.  Much can be done, however to minimize the occurrence of breakouts thereby reducing the impact of acne on our lives.  Making healthy adjustments to our diet, lifestyle and skin care product choices can lead to clearer, more radiant and healthy skin, free at last from acne.

title:Controlling Intestinal Gas Naturally
author:Dr. Rita Louise
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:12

Intestinal gas, flatulence, farting or breaking wind is a natural part of the digestive process.  This odorless gas, although at times embarrassing, is the result of good digestion.  Every day our body produces one to three pints of gas that is ultimately passed.  Intestinal gas is made up of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane.  If we notice an unpleasant smell, it is because the gas contains other compounds, including hydrogen sulfide and ammonia.
Bacterium that lives in our intestinal tract is what produces most intestinal gas.  It digests the food we eat; primarily sugars, starches and cellulose.  When ingested sugars are not been properly broken down, they can ferment and produce gas as they pass through the small intestine.  Contractions of the small intestine propel this gas through the large intestine, where it is expelled out the rectum.  This prevents gas from accumulating in the body, which can cause cramping.
Certain foods produce more gas then others.  Some healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, beans and peas often are the worst offenders.  These foods are high in soluble fiber.  Fiber slows the digestion of starches in the small intestine, thus promoting increased gas.  Fiber, however, has many benefits including promoting a healthy digestive tract, regulating our blood sugar and maintaining normal cholesterol levels.
Normally we pass gas about fourteen times a day.  Intestinal gas is only considered excessive if it is being passed over twenty times per day.  If someone complains of excessive gas, but isn’t passing it over twenty times a day, then something else may be going on.  Perhaps the real concern is the foul odor to their gas, an inability to hold gas back, or even a problem with soiling their undergarments when gas is being passed.  Thankfully there are a number of natural, alternative health remedies we can try which may help to reduce or eliminate the embarrassment of intestinal gas from our lives.
Recommendations For Wellness
Avoid foods such as beans, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, coffee, eggs, fish, prunes, radishes, dates, figs - or artificial sweeteners like sorbitol - which can promote gas production.
Limit high fat foods.  Fats slow the digestion of foods through the stomach and small intestine.
Avoid milk and milk products, especially if you suspect you are lactose intolerant.
Try taking a digestive enzyme or digestive bitter tonic before meals to help improve carbohydrate digestion.
Activated charcoal tablets, when taken before a meal, have been shown to greatly reduce gas formation.
Ginger, either fresh or in tablet form, is useful in relieving flatulence.
Catnip and fennel are herbs that are often used to ease bloating and reduce intestinal gas.
Nature’s Sunshine’s Anti-Gas Formula contains a blend of herbs that assist the body’s efforts to expel gas.
Supplementation with probiotics such as acidophilus and bifidophilus supports healthy bacteria in the digestive tract and keeps gas-producing bacteria in check.
title:Controlling The Urge For Comfort Foods
author:Joey Dweck
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

Eating ‘comfort’ foods to calm your stress levels may not exactly be a new technique, but a recent study has shown that the use of comfort foods has steadily risen over the past two years. The study was conducted by the University of Michigan’s American Customer Satisfaction Index and revealed that customer satisfaction ratings for manufacturers of traditional so-called comfort foods were up. These foods included some of the most popular candy companies; like Hershey and Mars. So, what has caused the consumption of comfort foods to rise? The study concluded that concerns about the war in Iraq, personal safety, the economy and other events have significantly contributed to the increase in use of food as a way to relieve stress.
While indulging in cookies, candy and other calorie laden foods may make you feel somewhat better about stressful events and news; ultimately it will nothing for your health. There might not be much you can do to control the stressful events surrounding you; but fortunately there are several techniques you can utilize to control comfort eating.
One of the best ways you can control comfort eating is to practice a little patience. If you can wait at least 15 minutes before indulging in traditional comfort foods, there is a very good chance that you can avoid eating them at all.
Another good way to limit the amount of comfort foods you consume is to keep a food diary. Make a point to diligently write down all the foods you eat each day—even those that are just a few of this and a handful of that. Seeing what you have eaten in writing is a great way to keep you on the right track.
Most people indulge in comfort foods while chatting on the phone, watching TV or surfing the net. Try making an agreement with yourself that you will only eat while seated at the table and you will improve your ability to withstand the urge to comfort snack.
The buddy system is also a fantastic way to take control of the desire to delve into comfort foods. If you happen to have a friend that also faces the same temptations; this provides an advantage for both of you. Whenever you are feeling stressed and are tempted to grab your favorite snack; opt to phone or visit your buddy instead.
Many people who feel the temptation to indulge in comfort foods due to stress find that redirecting their attention helps tremendously. One way to do this is to place the amount of money that your comfort food would cost into a jar and saving it for something special. You will be surprised not only at the amount of money you will save, but at how well you will be able to avoid comfort food and feel better about yourself.
Finally; whenever all else fails, remove yourself from temptation by doing away with the junk food in your home and office. Replace them with foods that are healthy for you; so that even if you can’t resist the urge to snack while stressed at least you will be filling your body with something good for you.
title:Controlling Type II Diabetes Through Diet And Exercise
author:Sintilia Miecevole
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

If you have been diagnosed with adult onset type II Diabetes, you may be able to control your condition through diet and exercise. Many people have genetic predispositions for adult onset diabetes, but the disease is usually brought on by poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. It can be hard to reverse the damage caused by years of unhealthy living, but by changing the way you eat and exercise, you can help control your disease and can lead a fairly normal life without the need for insulin-regulating medicine.
Before embarking on a workout plan or adhering to a new diet, you should first consult your doctor. He or she will probably make dietary suggestions and will usually refer you to a dietician who can help you plan your meals. The dietician will tell you what you can and cannot eat, and what you can eat in moderation. You will have to cut out all of the sugar from your diet. This means drinking diet sodas, if you must drink sodas at all, and eating sugar free candy on those special occasions.
It is important to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables to take the place of all of those empty calories and to keep you feeling full and energetic. You should make sure to take in enough protein to help your muscles get your through your new workout schedule, and be sure to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. You will want to eat several small meals throughout the day rather than just eating two or three times with a lot of time in between. By eating more small meals, you will keep your blood sugar at a more steady level, rather than having the ups and downs associated with large meals followed by gaps in eating.
Once your diet is under control. The next step is to begin an exercise program. You don’t have to aim for running a marathon or even a mile. Walking is the most prescribed form of exercise for diabetes patients. Whether you walk in the mall, around the neighborhood or on a treadmill, the most important thing is to get moving and to keep moving for an extended period of time every single day. Though you may not feel motivated at first, you will soon start to look and feel better and better. Seeing these changes will hopefully provide you with enough motivation to stick to your workout plan.
If find walking boring, try to find a partner who will keep you motivated. There are also many diabetes support groups that have walking clubs that meet daily. You can join a club and meet other diabetes sufferers who will help keep you on the right track. They can provide inspiration and encouragement by sharing success stories and by keeping you aware of the complications that can arise if the disease is left untreated. Once you get into fairly good shape, you might try playing a sport that you enjoy, like golf or tennis. You could also join a gym and participate in some yoga or aerobics classes to add some variety to your workout plan.
Keep in mind that the best way to avoid diabetes complications is to change your lifestyle. Many of the common problems of people diabetes can be avoided by staying away from sugar and other harmful foods. By exercising and staying healthy, you can avoid vision loss and circulation problems associated with the disease without having to use expensive and debilitating drugs to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level. Remember that your body is your most important asset, and keeping it working properly should be your highest priority.

Article Body:
Dieting is much easier once you learn to control hunger throughout the day. One popular way many dieters are suppressing their appetites is by drinking protein shakes as replacement meals. Even many bodybuilders are finding protein shakes to be helpful in getting all the protein they need each day.

There are many types and brands of protein shakes such as Herbalife products used in the La Bamba diet. Protein shakes enable you to eat - or drink - two replacement meals each day that are rich in nutrition and protein. The more protein you take in, the more fat your body will burn.

How Protein Shakes Work

Adding more protein to your meals or using protein shakes to supply the protein you need enables your body to burn fat while also building muscle. It preserves your body's lean muscle mass as well. Protein also helps the body to produce nucleic acids, cellular messengers, hormones, enzymes, and immune system components.

Unfortunately, eating protein in the form of meat can be hard on your digestive system. Protein shakes come in liquid form so they are easy to digest. It only takes approximately 30 minutes for the protein from shakes to reach the muscle after ingestion where solid food proteins could take an hour or longer.

Many bodybuilders will drink a protein shake immediately after a workout to heal and strengthen their muscles. It's a good idea to eat foods rich in protein at breakfast to get your metabolism moving. Then, add protein or protein shakes to your diet throughout the day so your body will keep burning calories.

Drinking Protein Shakes for Dieting

Protein shakes in dieting are usually meant to replace meals or snacks each day. For example, with La Bamba Herbalife three-day diets, you would drink a shake, take protein powder, drink herbal tea and a beverage mix, and drink herbal aloe drink concentrate for three days.

With the Herbalife Shapeworks diet, however, you'll drink filling protein shakes, eat healthy snacks, and take herbal supplements to lose weight or maintain your weight over a long period of time. Diets such as these are often customized to meet your dietary needs and your body's protein requirements.

No matter what type of diet you choose, protein should be a key ingredient because it is so important in burning calories, and it helps you keep that "full" feeling much longer. Use protein shakes to ensure that your body receives the protein it needs and watch those unwanted pounds melt away!

How to Overcome Emotional Urges to Eat (Whether Too Much, at the Wrong Time, or for the Wrong Foods)

muscle building, fat burning, fitness and weight training

Article Body:
How do I overcome urges to eat?

To answer this question, we first need to understand why we eat in the first place. It's probably safe to say, you likely already know the answers to that question. We eat for energy. We eat to stay alive. We eat to nourish our bodies. And, we eat to preserve our health.  There are social reasons too—such as a business lunch or a dinner party with friends. There are cultural reasons—such as the Fourth of July BBQ and Thanksgiving dinner. And, of course, we can never forget to eat a piece (or two) of the traditional birthday cake during a celebration.  Eating is even focused around religious observations—like Easter dinner, Passover, or a Bar-mitzvah.  And, for some of us, eating plays a role in our romantic activities as well—the infamous late night dinner date or breakfast in bed.

But why do we sometimes feel the overwhelming magnetic attraction to stop by the local fast-food joint and grab a double-cheeseburger and fries? Why do we feel the need to super size our meals when we're depressed or have had a bad day? Where does the desire to gulp down every last bite of a restaurant meal—whose portions are grossly oversized—come from? Why do we feel the sudden urge to raid the refrigerator late at night—looking for anything fattening or sweet? And why do we feel the need to mindlessly munch on "snack-foods" from the nearby vending machine during the middle of a workday... when we're not even really hungry?

If you've ever experienced any of these common scenarios, you're not alone. Thousands of people every day, including me, battle with these sudden "urges" to eat. The truth is, in most cases, these desires are driven primarily by our emotions and, in some instances, physiologically, by our brain chemicals. Either way, the two are intertwined more closely than some people and scientists think.

Typically, "urges" to eat are first driven by our emotions. Emotions so strong, they can easily override our common sense or desire to do the "right thing"—that is, to eat healthy, nutritious, moderately low-fat foods. So, why, when we are working so hard to improve ourselves and striving to build a better body do we allow ourselves to fall into these "mindless" eating traps?  Eating like we are... well... out of control. We are supposed to be different than that, aren't we? We're supposed to be perfect, right? We're supposed to be healthy and always eating only what's on our prescribed list of "approved" foods, isn't that correct? Well, I've got some news for you...

"Once we can accept that we are not perfect and determine how to overcome those emotional "urges" when they do arise... we can keep ourselves on the right path to a lean, strong, healthy body."We are not perfect. We're not always going to eat the right foods! We are going to make mistakes. You know it, and I know it. The good news is, once we've become aware of that fact, we can begin to accept that we are not perfect and determine how to overcome those emotional "urges" when they do arise... and keep ourselves on the right path to a lean, strong, healthy body.

Eating Success Strategies
Now, let me share with you what I believe is the most powerful strategy you can use to help overcome any challenges that typically arise or are associated with "emotional eating."

From here on out, I will refer to these as "Eating for Success strategies."  Here are the strategies to help you overcome your emotional urges to eat:

We eat for a range of different reasons, besides trying to build muscle and slash bodyfat.

Of course, we already know the importance of eating smart. So why do we sometimes crave "bad" foods? Overeat? Or eat when we're not even hungry?  The answer to those questions is not so simple. However, as the latest science has shown, unless you're one of the small percentage of people who have a genetic tendency to produce higher-than-normal amounts of the "hunger" hormone, ghrelin (or the newest appetite-stimulating gene, recently discovered in France, called GAD2), there's an overwhelming amount of evidence to support the fact that your personal psychology plays a prominent role in determining when, and how much, you "feel" the need to eat.

See, our ability to control our eating has a great deal to do with our emotions—our personal psychology. Or, what I call "emotional triggers."  It can be extremely helpful to become very aware of the psychological factors that may be negatively influencing your eating habits. Awareness is the first and most important step. Maybe we eat in response to different emotions. We get upset or angry at our spouse or have a dispute with a co-worker. We get depressed when a loved one passes or a cherished relationship ends. We're bored at night or during the weekends or lonely and living alone (and it's just you and the fridge!). It's as if food is supposed to suddenly "fix" these feelings or solve your problems.

Not a FAT chance!  As you know, if you've experienced any one of these emotional triggers, eating food in response to them DOES NOT make you feel any better afterward. In fact, oftentimes you feel downright guilty because you know you're more "in control" than what you displayed by eating so mindlessly. And more often than not, you're angry at yourself too, because you likely ate an entire pint of Ben & Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk ice cream, topped it off with a bowl of Frosted Mini-Wheats, and set yourself back on your course to your new body.

To minimize emotional triggers that cause you to crave unhealthy foods, I suggest you keep a food journal, writing down everything you eat each day for about one week. When you eat uncontrollably, or mindlessly, simply write down how you were feeling when the urge to eat hit.

"To minimize emotional triggers that cause you to crave unhealthy foods, I suggest you keep a food journal..."Once you become aware of an emotional issue that repeatedly causes you to go into a tailspin of eating mindlessly, you can actually turn that awareness into action to control the issue. See, every personal insight you can collect then becomes an opportunity for a careful choice in the future. And a mindful, careful choice is the key to gaining control over your urges to eat, and thus, instead of eating "comfort foods," you can make the right decisions—smarter decisions—when it comes to maintaining balanced, healthy food choices.

By understanding that awareness of when and how your particular emotional responses are triggered, you'll quickly discover the reasons for many of your choices in the past. And possibly more importantly, you'll gain an appreciation for how your past choices may have led to current, sometimes careless eating habits. In other words, you'll learn when poor eating habits derailed your progress in achieving your physique development goals and how they may have been better dealt with, more wisely and more consciously.

So, now we've come to the $64,000 question: How should you respond to those sudden, uncontrollable urges to eat? Well, let's start with some very effective preventative measures... strategies I've used for some 15 years now to keep me on the right path to a better body.

Eat smart. Not less. Try to consume five to six protein- and carbohydrate-balanced meals each day. It amazes me how many times I've given out this advice, yet at the same time, I find it's continually overlooked.  Besides the scientific fact that by eating small meals throughout the day, you can keep brain chemicals (i.e., hunger hormones) and insulin (along with blood sugar) levels even, in doing so, you will undoubtedly suppress those uncontrollable emotional hunger cravings.

Also, cutting calories, or eliminating food groups altogether, such as all carbohydrates or all fats (recommendations often found in traditional diets), is the absolute WORST thing you can do. Limiting calories and/or food tells your mind that you're depriving yourself... and shortly thereafter, your body will crave those forbidden foods. In essence, you're more likely to psychologically "want" to eat them and, consequently, more likely to binge on them. That's besides the fact that once you reintroduce them into your diet, you'll easily put back any pounds you lost.

"...cutting calories, or eliminating food groups altogether, such as all carbohydrates or all fats (recommendations often found in traditional diets), is the absolute WORST thing you can do."Research shows that by consuming five to six protein- and carbohydrate-balanced meals each day—eating every two to three hours while you're awake—is the optimal way to keep your body in a fat-burning mode, supply your muscle tissue with plenty of the nutrients it needs to rebuild itself, and defer any hunger cravings that could otherwise arise. One great way to achieve this is by using a meal replacement. These powders are convenient and provide your body with all of the essential nutrients of a whole-food meal without all of the hassle of shopping, preparing, cooking, eating, and cleaning up after a regular meal. Think of meal-replacement protein shakes as fast food for the 21st century. They are extremely convenient and work exceptionally well to fulfill your daily nutritional needs.

My favorite meal replacement/protein supplement is called Eat-Smart®. I helped to create Eat-Smart, and it's as delicious as it is nutritious. Eat-Smart contains healthy, whole-food ingredients and absolutely no bad stuff like fructose, hydrogenated oils, or aspartame. The best part might well be that you can choose from "dessert-like" flavors. (If you'd like to learn more about Eat-Smart, please visit

Make better bad choices (if it comes to that!)
Here's an example: whenever you get caught on a three-hour plane flight, and you weren't prepared (leaving your protein/nutrition bar or RTD at home)—hey! I'm just as guilty—and your only choice is the airline's mystery meat sandwich... as crazy as it sounds, eat what the airplane serves you. Now, before you think I'm crazy, here's what I mean by making a "better bad choice"...

In the above scenario, you're faced with literally NOTHING in your stomach for three or maybe four hours. Then, there's the strong likelihood that once you land and retrieve your luggage, you'll make a B-line for the nearest fast-food joint and gobble down EVERYTHING in sight.

That's clearly not what you want!

So, to keep this from happening, simply eat what the airlines offers you; however, here's what I'd suggest to make it truly a "better" bad choice: drink water or a diet soda, take half the bread off of the sandwich, don't spread on the mayonnaise, and don't even look at that little slice of cheesecake or cookie served on the side.  Now, believe it or not, in that instance, by at least eating SOMETHING (halfway nutritious), you've just made a better choice.  This goes for having a night out (e.g., dinner and drinks with your friends). Instead of gulping down two or three beers, have a glass a wine. Instead of chomping down on the bowl of deep-fried tortilla chips in front of you, ask the server for some plain corn tortillas, and dip them in the salsa. Instead of allowing the restaurant cooks to douse your vegetables in butter, tell the server you want them steamed (with no butter!). And last, go for the low-fat or nonfat dressings if you can when you order your salad.

Making "better bad choices" like these is really as simple as that. And, once you begin to put this strategy into practice, you'll quickly see how easy it is to follow through, no matter what your circumstances. Plus, you'll feel much more in control.
Plan and prepare your meals in advance.
If you fail to plan, you might as well plan to fail. Seriously. While I recognize that most of us are too busy to prepare healthy, low-fat, nutrient-rich foods every day—six times a day (I'm included here!)—don't make the mistake so many others make, which is to plan their workouts but eat "accidentally." If you fail to follow a proven nutrition strategy, your chances of building a better body are pretty much slim to none.

One possible solution I've used over the years with great success is for my wife and I to prepare our meals for the week on Sunday night and then store them and freeze the rest. Cooking in larger quantities will take the pressure off of you having to shop, cook, prepare, and clean-up after several meals throughout the week. Plus, as a bonus, by shopping like this, you'll likely save more money on groceries too.

In addition, by being more prepared throughout the week, you won't have to "think" about what you're going to eat or how you're going to get your food... you only have to consider when to eat it. It's a simple solution to a complex problem that many, many people suffer from each and every day. It's a shame to see so many people put in such hard work at the gym and then follow a haphazard eating pattern. Being prepared with healthy, nutritious meals will ensure you're not the guy you see every day standing by the break-room vending machine, slamming in 50 cents to get his daily lunchtime candy bar. Following this strategy, you won't look and feel like him either.

Now it's time for you to get to work. That means, it's time for you to take these THREE success strategies I've described and put them into your daily practice.

Remember, all successes and failures in life are based on habit. Those who are unsuccessful have the EXACT same biological make-up as those who are successful. The only difference is, successful people follow successful habits, and unsuccessful people follow unsuccessful habits. It's really as simple as that.

My hope is this exercise has enabled you to identify a number of useful, actionable, and motivating strategies for creating your own success... so you can now overcome any emotional eating habits you might have had and stay on the right path to building your absolute best body!

Article Body:
First thing to do is know and understand the problem, so you need to find out your personal Body Mass Index. This is the figure the dentitions use to asses how much over weight you are.Its very easy to look at this figure and thinks that’s o.k. its not that much overweight.

Remember that everyday you are overweight you are putting an excess strain on your body and heart muscle so consider even removing a small amount of weight being a very important step in being able to live longer and be healthier.

Body Mass Index can be worked out as follows. Your weight in kilograms is divided by your height in meters squared you can obtain the required conversion to pounds and feet if you require and then put the figures in.
Once you have obtained your Body Mass Index its then time to do something about it.

For everyone it’s a good idea to have a BMI of between 18 – 25 Its important not to go underweight as this has extreme dangers and can cause major problems for your body to cope. How ever most people have the problem over being over the magic 25 figure which means you require to do some exercise, change your diet and consider what else you can do to reduce Fat intake.

The most important thing to consider is how you feel  sometimes BMI is misleading in the way the figures show. Some people feel fine at being overweight so its important add that into your factor before considering the action you need to take.

If your BMI is over 30 then you are considered obese and this does need to be addressed.  Also you need to consider your shape if you have FAT building around the waist this is the most dangerous As this can increase your chance of having heart problems.

Before considering what to do be realistic the following is always sound advice. Fast diets are never good for you and always return you to your previous weight sooner or later. So find out what you are taking in at the moment list all the items and do some serious research on the products that you are eating.

Asses what your findings are carefully and then look at what would be a good for an average days intake of calories and start to measure how much calories your burning. Get a pedometer and make sure you balance any excess food against sufficient exercise.

Try to balance your diet also consider how much alcohol you consume as this carries calories too. Increase your energy output by doing the best exercises like swimming which is a non impact exercise and operates all your muscles.

An average man requires around 2500 calories per day and a woman around 2000 calories try to keep a record of this per day per week and track your progress. Try to consider that eating smaller regular meals is easier for the body to maintain good blood sugar levels.

Don’t binge on items such chocolates and cake I know its hard an every time I pass a cake shop I feel the urge to get one.  Control your shopping habits try to pre order in your mind the shopping list so that bad items don’t get on it.

(1) Set a good goal for a period of time always helps and makes you feel better when you achieve it.

(2) Reduce fried foods and look at alternative ways of cooking the same foods.

(3) Replace fizzy drinks with water as fizzy drinks contain enormous amounts of sugar.

(4) Reduce alcohol consumption always a good idea during dieting.

(5) Try to get the five recommended fruit and vegetables a day if possible.

(6) Water intake needs to have around 6 glasses a day which is around 2.5 pints per day this helps your body tremendously and reduces the urge to eat.

(7) Maintain a good exercise program try to do good non impact exercises.

(8) Consult a Doctor or detritions for proper advice only take pills under medical advice.

(9) Feel good in yourself that you are improving everyday.

(10) Seek good advice from friends and get support from them if you feel depressed.

title:Control  Cholesterol Naturally

date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:10

Blood Cholesterol is produced by our body for several purposes. In some people it is produced more than is required by our body, especially when the diet contains saturated fats. Saturated fats in the diet force the body to make too much cholesterol. The cholesterol may become high when our diet is rich in saturated fats that are found only in animal products. Plant foods do not contain any cholesterol, but the animal foods are loaded with cholesterol and fats. Most of the fast foods are very rich in fats, monounsaturated fats. If you eat lot of meats and fast foods, then the chances are that you have high cholesterol. You should get your blood cholesterol checked. Remember that without your blood cholesterol report, you can not know if you have high cholesterol.
Blood cholesterol can be both good and bad. There are two types of cholesterol: LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol & HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol. The LDL cholesterol is known as "bad cholesterol" because it gets deposited on the walls of the arteries as plaque, and restricting the flow of the blood. The HDL cholesterol, known as the "good cholesterol" helps remove the plaque from the arteries.  Both the types of  cholesterol are produced by our body for certain functions and are always present in our blood. The problem arises when the cholesterol is produced more than is required by our body. The following are the desirable levels of cholesterol in adults:

Total Cholesterol:  below 200 mg/dl
LDL cholesterol:   less than 130 mg/dL
HDL cholesterol: more than 35mg/dL

HDL cholesterol of less than 35mg/dL is a risk factor for heart disease, even if your total cholesterol is within limits. Both LDL and HDL cholesterol can be improved with regular exercise and eating low fat cholesterol friendly foods.
To take better care of your heart and reducing your risk for heart attack, you must understand the complete facts about cholesterol and how to control cholesterol.
Note that you do not always need to take medication for controlling your cholesterol. There are several natural heart friendly foods that are good for controlling cholesterol without any medication. Good eating habits and some exercise can control your cholesterol and triglycerides naturally.

Pro anorexia is a controversial matter, referring to the pro-active character of anorexics’ lifestyles. There are lots of pro anorexia web sites throughout the Internet that provide feedback to people with anorexia. These web sites offer tips, advice and support to persons who are dealing with eating disorders.

Pro anorexia (pro-ana) web sites claim that their aim is not to encourage and support anorexia, but to prevent and eliminate its undesirable effects. However, despite these affirmations, pro anorexia web sites primarily focus on helping people with anorexia to better deal with their condition, instead of revealing the dangerous aspects of having such an eating disorder.

Through the means of pro anorexia web sites, persons with anorexia are integrated into an online community; they mainly receive tips on how to take care of themselves and they are not encouraged to ask for professional help. Pro anorexia web sites challenge people with anorexia to accept their condition, regarding to anorexics as rebels fighting against conventional, old-fashioned ideals and values.

Pro anorexia web sites usually implement the idea of superiority among the community of people with anorexia, referring to anorexics as people with a strong will that take action in order to achieve their goals. Their behavior is appreciated and considered to be an act of courage.

The ideals promoted by pro anorexia web sites are drastically contradicted and admonished by medical professionals. In their opinion, people who suffer from eating disorders like anorexia actually engage in acts of self-destruction. The truth is that anorexia is a very serious mental illness that may actually lead to death by starvation. Physicians and psychiatrists strongly recommend persons with anorexia to accept and follow an appropriate treatment. Medical professionals are disturbed by the slogans promoted by pro anorexia web sites and try to inform people with such eating disorders about the risks they expose themselves to.

It is very important to understand that anorexia is an illness, not a lifestyle! A real act of courage is to ask for help, not to try to deal with anorexia on your own. It is also vital to quickly take action in overcoming such eating disorders, in order to prevent further damage and health problems. Anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders can be treated; however, a lot of ambition is involved in the process of overcoming the illness. People with anorexia usually deny having a problem and they isolate themselves from the rest of the world. Pro anorexia web sites try to make these people feel appeased and to integrate them within a community where they are understood and appreciated. Despite all that, these web sites never encourage anorexics to take steps in curing their condition. They concentrate on providing them with recipes and diets instead, therefore contributing to their destruction.

People with anorexia should accept professional help and try to perceive their condition from an objective point of view. They should understand there are better things in life than continuously counting calories and worrying about gaining weight.

Cooling Down Hot Flashes

Article Body:
Menopausal women searching for new ways to cool down hot flashes have found a new prescription: antidepressants. Although this does not mean that all menopausal women are going through depression, none of these drugs are specifically approved for the condition, yet the number of doctors giving “off label” prescriptions is on the rise.

Hot flashes are characterized by the sudden, intense, hot feeling on your face and upper body, and can be preceded or accompanied by a rapid heartbeat and sweating, nausea, dizziness, anxiety, headache, weakness, or a feeling of suffocation.

According to research, the use of antidepressants for menopausal women has become increasingly common due to the fact that women and doctors alike are seeking alternatives to menopause hormones. It has been observed that the use of hormone drugs for menopause has decreased significantly since 2002, after a government study that linked hormone use in older women may result to stroke and breast cancer.

There is no clear evidence why antidepressants seem to have a cooling down effect in the hot flashes of some women. The connection was made only by chance in the studies of women with breast cancer. There are some cancer drugs that can set off hot flashes, and researchers noticed that women who were also taking the antidepressants known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors had fewer flashes.

There are studies which showed that the use of these and other serotonin-altering drugs to treat hot flashes in healthy menopausal women have shown disappointing results. On the other hand, Wyeth’s Effexor and GlaxoSmithKline’s Paxil, have shown a meaningful benefit in high-quality controlled studies, as per a review published last year in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Most women welcome the idea of relief more than they would receive from drugs. In one Effexor trial, the antidepressant users reported about 60 percent fewer hot flashes. By comparison, studies of hormones show estrogen reduces the frequency of hot flashes 80 percent. However, some women also complained of numerous side effects, such as constipation, dry mouth and nausea.
According to Cynthia Pearson, Executive Director of the National Women's health, some women are fine with antidepressants and say, “It helps and it makes a difference,” while others say, “Forget it. I don’t feel like myself.”

Different studies produce a variation of results in connection with the drug responses. A study of the antidepressant Zoloft which was sponsored by its maker, Pfizer, and published this month in the journal “Menopause,” has reported that one-third of the subjects actually had more hot flashes while taking the drug, a third stayed about the same or experienced just a slight benefit, and another third reported far fewer hot flashes. Such finding is similar to trends shown in other studies of antidepressants for hot flashes, which include Prozac and Paxil.

Figuring out which type of women have the most to gain from taking antidepressant drugs is the real challenge but the number of women to be studied should increase in order to come up with significant conclusions. In the Zoloft trial, only 27 women were in the high-benefit group.

A very interesting trend emerged among women who were recently menopausal.  These women who had just stopped having their periods turned out to receive the most benefits from antidepressant treatment. However, women who had been menopausal for a year and those who were just starting to experience the effects of hormonal fluctuations fared worse on the drug.

The biggest concern about antidepressant use for menopause is that the drugs may worsen some symptoms already common during menopause — things like anxiety, sleep problems and loss of libido. And while the drugs have been used safely for years in people with depression, there’s no long-term data on their use in healthy women with healthy brains.

Women who will opt to try antidepressant treatment for the relief of hot flashes should first consult professional medical advise. Regular follow-up is also necessary in the first weeks after starting the drug.

title:Cool Down with Hot Summer First-Aid
author:Louise Roach
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:10

When the temperature tops 90 and the soles of your shoes sizzle on the sidewalk, cold therapy is a necessity for summer first-aid.  Whether it is ice from your freezer, a bag of frozen vegetables or a convenient commercial cold pack, ice therapy has many more uses than treating bumps and bruises.
Here are five summer first-aid tips for cold therapy:
Chill heat-related illnesses.
During the hot summer months, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be a problem.  Symptoms of exhaustion can include dizziness, weakness, a feeling of nausea, excessive sweating and a shallow, quick pulse.  With more serious heat stroke, the skin is hot and dry, and mental confusion can occur along with a loss of consciousness.  Cold packs can be used to keep the body cool in excessive temperatures, helping to prevent heat exhaustion. Many athletes cool down after a summer event with an icy cold pack on the back of their necks. If symptoms are present, ice packs along with hydration can be used to lower the body temperature to a safe level.  Always seek medical attention in the case of heat stroke as this condition can be sudden and deadly.
Ice bug bites.
Let’s face it, insect bites are a nuisance, causing swelling, itching and sometimes pain.  Icing a bite immediately will keep the bug poison from spreading to other parts of the body, reduce swelling and inflammation, and numb the area, lessening the need to itch. Use ice therapy on mosquito, bee, spider, fire ant and centipede bites.  If an allergic reaction happens or it is a serious bite, such as from the poisonous Brown Recluse Spider, immediately seek medical help.
Keep pets cool.
Even pets can suffer in the summer heat.  Keeping them cool can be tricky.  An ice pack wrapped in a towel or beneath a thin blanket might do the trick if they decide to snooze on top of it.  Ice cubes are a cool treat that some animals enjoy.  There are also commercial products made specifically for horses to ice their legs down after a ride.  Special caution should be taken to never use a product containing toxins or one that might easily break, endangering a pet if they decide it would be more fun to play with the ice pack than lay on it.
Cool a Burn.
Getting too much sun or being careless around an outside grill can result in summer burns.  For minor first degree burns caused by brief contact with a hot object, water or steam, and sunburn, cool the skin by first holding it under running water, then apply a cold pack to numb the pain.  If blistering occurs (second or third degree burns) seek medical help.
Cold treatment for night sweats.
Hot summer evenings can mean intense night sweats for menopausal women.  A great natural approach to cooling off when awakened by a wave of heat is to tuck a cold pack into the pillowcase so that it lies at the crook of the neck.  Within a few minutes, the heat wave will subside, allowing for a restful night’s sleep.
Make sure you have at least one or two cold packs in your freezer for summer first-aid.  Chill out and be prepared!

Cool Ways To Combat The Common Cold

Article Body:
Yes, it's that time of year again-cold season. The typical cold is an upper respiratory infection that can be caused by more than 200 different viruses. Symptoms include sinus pressure, nasal congestion, headaches, body aches and sometimes fever and cough.

Recent statistics have shown that adults average two to four colds a year, which amounts to one billion colds nationwide. Contrary to popular belief, exposure to cold weather is not proven to cause colds. In fact, spending more time indoors actually increases the chance for viruses to spread.

When someone has a cold, sneezing, nose-blowing and nose-wiping may spread the virus. You're likely to catch a cold by inhaling the virus if you are sitting close to someone who sneezes, or by touching your nose, eyes or mouth after you have touched something contaminated by the cold virus.

There are over-the-counter (OTC) medications available at your local pharmacy to relieve symptoms of the common cold. If you're looking for 12 hours of relief from just one pill, Aleve Cold & Sinus is effective in treating headaches, body aches, fever, nasal congestion and sinus pressure that may result from a cold.

New guidelines published by The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) suggest that the pain reliever naproxen, an active ingredient in Aleve Cold & Sinus, is more effective in treating cold-induced coughs than popular OTC cough syrups.

If a cold causes your sinuses to become congested, this congestion may lead to painful sinus headaches. You might have a sinus headache if you are experiencing pain or pressure around the eyes, cheeks and forehead; tender skin and bones over and under the eyes; and pain when bending over. The active ingredient in Aleve Sinus & Headache is an extended-release decongestant that works to reduce sinus pressure for up to 12 hours.

In addition to an OTC medication, other ways to treat your cold include:

• Get plenty of rest

• Drink plenty of fluids

• Don't drink alcohol

• Gargle with warm water to soothe a sore throat.

"I'm exposed to germs every shift that I work," said Marty Heggs, a registered nurse from Loveland, Colo. "Aleve Cold & Sinus allows me to continue to help others during my 12-hour shift. I recommend it to all my co-workers and patients."

Aleve Cold & Sinus and Aleve Sinus & Headache are both available at your local pharmacy and many other stores where you purchase health and beauty products. If you cannot find these products on the shelf, ask your pharmacist or store manager for help, as they may be located behind the pharmacy or service counter.

Article Body:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD is a disease that causes destruction of airways in the lungs. In the United States, it’s the fourth highest cause of death. Every year, more than 85,000 people die from COPD.

In most of cases, the root cause for COPD is smoking or consumption of tobacco. Naturally, COPD causes a number of health problems and reduces the life expectancy of those who suffer from it. If detected and treated early, life expectancy can be greatly increased, and if smoking is stopped immediately, lung has the capacity to recover dramatically. This, in turn, increases the life expectancy.

In cases where the intensity of COPD has developed beyond the initial stages, giving up smoking alone may not help increase life expectancy. In such cases, oxygen therapy is given and the patient must inhale oxygen through a mask or nasal cannulae placed beneath his nostrils. The patient needs to purchase oxygen tanks for home use, or portable versions for travel. Nowadays, oxygen concentrator machines that use air to produce oxygen are effective replacements for traditional oxygen tanks.

In many cases, when COPD is in its final stages, even oxygen therapy may not help the patient. In such cases transplantation of the lungs may be the only way of increasing life expectancy. Transplantation is suggested to those patients whose life expectancy is felt to be less than two to three years. However, at this stage, there is no average to determine the life expectancy of a patient.

If COPD is detected in a person, giving up smoking is the best way to increase life expectancy. Other treatments like oxygen therapy, exercise and transplantation will also help, but you cannot fight COPD unless you quit smoking.

title:COPD Sufferers – Keep Those Pearly Whites Clean!

If you have emphysema, chronic bronchitis or asthmatic bronchitis (the group of diseases that make up Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD), you have a few good reasons to keep your teeth clean:

There are over 300 species of bacteria that live in your mouth. Periodontal disease is caused by the plaque producing bacteria.
Studies suggests that periodontal disease may promote the progression of COPD. Bacteria in the mouth may infect the body either through saliva or from breathing into the lungs.
Cytokines are released by the body in defense of periodontal disease. These cytokines tax the body’s immune system.

COPD sufferers know an ordinary cold or flu can be destructive. Coughs linger and flu turns into pneumonia.
The bacteria that cause periodontal disease and are taxing your immune system are breeding right now in the cozy, moist, acidic environment of your mouth. The areas between the teeth are particularly good breeding grounds because the bacteria thrive in the absence of oxygen. Symptoms of periodontal disease are often not noticeable until the disease is advanced. A dentist can diagnose the disease in the early stages, prior to individuals realizing they have it.
Periodontal disease is prevented by thoroughly cleaning your teeth. Professional cleanings at a dentist office every six months, brushing teeth twice a day and flossing once a day are recommended. Because it is a laborious task to floss, most people don’t. Yet, to prevent and control periodontal disease, flossing is extremely important. Unfortunately, The Journal of Clinical Periodontology reported that for those that do floss, only 18 – 35% of the plaque between teeth is removed. And oral irrigators can’t cut through plaque’s sticky biofilm.
Even with more tools available to keep teeth and gums healthier than in the past, 80% of all adults have some form of periodontal disease. There are electric toothbrushes, oral irrigators, tongue scrapers, oral disinfectants and even a new device – Dental Air Force that combines brushing and flossing - available. The Dental Air Force ( also has an added benefit of aerating the sites between teeth, changing the environment and making it difficult for the bacteria to grow.
Whatever method of cleaning used, studies show that oral health is critical to total health. With the cold and flu season here, wash your hands, keep your immune system healthy AND clean your teeth.
COPD: Respiratory Ailment Explained

Word Count:

The article talks about the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a combination of two similar conditions among smokers. Chronic bronchitis and chronic emphysema are among the two respiratory conditions that may occur together in the same person.

quit smoking

Article Body:
Cigarette smoking has been strongly linked to health conditions like heart disease and lung cancer. Other than these two dreaded disease, heavy smoking may also cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This condition causes inflammation and damages the small airways of the lung tissue and may cause breathing difficulties. COPD is usually a combination of two similar conditions: chronic bronchitis and chronic emphysema. Because cigarette smoking is the major cause of these two conditions, they often occur together in the same person. COPD damage is progressive and permanent and has become one of the fastest-growing health problems. It has become the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and is responsible for more than 96,000 deaths annually. Because of these health conditions the need to quit smoking has become more important than ever. Understanding COPD is essential in encouraging smokers to quit this dreaded and potentially fatal habit.

Chronic Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is caused by inhaling bronchial irritants like cigarette smoke, chemical fumes, air pollution, and environmental irritants like mold or dust. Cigarette smoke may increase the risk for infection because it damages the cilia or the small hair-like projections that protect the lungs from bacteria and other foreign particles out of the lungs. This disease develops slowly, middle aged and older individuals have heightened risks of getting diagnosed with bronchitis. Symptoms of chronic bronchitis may include wheezing, expectorating cough, chest pains, and persistent fatigue.

Emphysema is a chronic respiratory disease that is characterized by the enlargement of the alveoli or air sacks.  Emphysema may reduce the elasticity of the lungs and may result in the collapse of the bronchioles, the first airway that no longer contain cartilage. As this happens, air cannot leave the alveoli therefore hampering the function of the lungs. The lungs may lose their ability to shrink during exhalation. Reduced exhalation may also reduce the amount of air that is inhaled. Because of this condition, waste air is not easily removed from the lungs and oxygen-rich air is not restored. Individuals with emphysema may have a hard time breathing and oftentimes gasp for air. Emphysema is most common on individuals aged 50 and older and may occur with other respiratory disease like bronchitis.

Causes and symptoms of COPD may include the following:

Lifestyle. Cigarette smoking is by far the most important risk factor for COPD and accounts for at least 80% of all COPD cases. Cigar and pipe smoking can also cause COPD. Air pollution and industrial dust and fumes are the known air pollutants that worsen the ailment.
Age. Chronic bronchitis is more common in people over 40 years old; emphysema occurs more often in people 65 years of age and older.
Socioeconomic class. COPD-related deaths are about twice as high among unskilled and semi-skilled laborers as among professionals.
Family clustering. It is thought that heredity predisposes people in certain families to the development of COPD when other causes, such as smoking and air pollution, are present.
Lung infections that can either be viral or bacterial.

Treatment for COPD is dependent on the patient's condition and the severity of the disease. With a health program that involves respiratory care, disability and other symptoms can be prevented and therefore reducing the occurrence of early deaths. However, no treatments are proven to cure this disease. Certain treatments are only designed to alleviate symptoms and increase survival rate.

Rather than focusing on the cure, lifestyle changes that may prevent the development of COPD should be  emphasized. The occurrence of COPD may be prevented if individuals who smoke quit smoking, maintain good nutrition, drink lots of fluids, maintain proper weight, and exercise. Understanding the health risks of of COPD are essential in making smokers quit smoking.

title:Coping Strategies For Back Pain
author:Kim Standerline
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

One coping strategy becoming more recognised by the medical profession in Back Pain Sufferers are Relaxation Techniques
The importance of relaxation in controlling and treating disease as well as back pain is now starting to be recognized by the general public as well as the medical profession though to be honest the public don't always understand its effectiveness.
Relaxation techniques, especially if they involve meditation, has often been seen as "mumbo jumbo" However within recent years scientists and doctors have discovered immense benefits to meditation in the relief of pain and illness.
Relaxation techniques have a definite place in the healing process of the body, With certain types of back pain the importance of relaxation is increased, since stress and emotional disposition plays a large part in a sufferers life due to their constant pain.
Prayer is a form of relaxation and meditation that works wonders for some people if they have faith. Allowing a minister or someone else to lead you in prayer or formulating your own inspirational prayer can assist you in calling upon the comfort of your God as you see him taking your pain away. Again mental and physical benefits are realized from such a practice.
Hypnosis as another option you can consider. Hypnosis is guided meditation allowing you to access the power of your subconscious mind with the assistance of a qualified hypnotist. The hypnotist can be a qualified psychologist, psychiatrist, counsellor, or social worker.
Hypnosis for pain management is nothing more than an assisted guided imagery. The only difference here to the relaxation techniques described above is you have someone to help you through the steps of relaxation and meditation on your image.
Relaxation is especially effective for those suffering from fibromyalgia, because this condition is caused by a number of non-physical triggers. Fibromyalgia largely comes from stress, lack of proper sleep, depression, and other emotional duress, and doesn't involve degeneration of the bones or joints. With this in mind, it's easy to see why relaxation techniques help alleviate fibromyalgia so well.
Yoga is very beneficial both for flexibility as well as relaxation. Forms of yoga such as Bhakta are devotional, and Raja is meditation-oriented. They can provide a great deal of healing toward all types of back pain. but specifically fibromyalgia because of the emotional causes of fibromyalgia

Many people are plagued with the everyday aggravation of skin problems.  One of the most common of these is acne, a frustrating skin disorder that, if left untreated in its severest form, can physically and mentally scar those who suffer from it.
Acne is a condition caused by the overproduction of sebum, a type of body oil.  It appears on the skin in the form of blemishes, also referred to as “pimples” or “zits”.  The condition takes on different forms with various people, whether it’s one or two inconspicuous pimples, or a full face flare-up.  It is particularly prominent in youths experiencing puberty, due to an increase in hormone production.
Although there is no ultimate cure for acne, it can be managed by using the proper skin care steps:
Choose cosmetics carefully.  Women who wear makeup can be susceptible to breakouts when they use products containing oils, which can aggravate their condition.  Oil free or non-comedogenic cosmetics are a good alternative, since other products can irritate pores and cause breakouts.  (Suggest product)
Easy does it-don’t over wash.  Excessive scrubbing can strip the skin of essential oils it needs to stay balanced.  In order to replace those oils, the pores work overtime, often overproducing oil and ultimately leading to more breakouts.  So be gentle with your skin, washing your face no more than twice daily.  Follow up each cleansing with a lotion containing benzoyl peroxide.  (Suggest product)
Stop-don’t’ pop:  tempting though it may be, leave those pimples alone!  Squeezing a blemish can actually drive oil deeper into the skin, causing more redness, or even scarring.  (Suggest product)
Keep it clean:  Any items that touch your face on a daily basis, such as eyeglasses, telephones, and pillowcases can accumulate oils that can aggravate skin.  It’s a good practice to keep such items as dirt free as possible, washing them often.
If you follow these tips and still experience breakouts, then perhaps it’s time to visit your dermatologist.  Dermatologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions such as acne, and can provide prescription medications to help you manage your blemishes.  They may also find other factors which cause flare-ups, such as diet, hormone levels, and stress.

title:Coping With Alopecia Areata
author:Richard Mitchell
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:10

Alopecia areata is a condition that is typified by patchy hair loss over the scalp or body. It comes in several forms ranging from a single patch to total body hair loss (alopecia universalis). Its cause may be difficult to diagnose but many cases appear to link directly to imbalances in the immune system that can be treated effectively. In most cases hair will reappear on its own but some patients develop more extreme variations that are more difficult to treat.
It is important that sufferers diagnose their condition correctly by visiting their doctor and undergoing a series of blood tests to check factors such as hormone levels. This will allow your physician or dermatologist to accurately diagnose your condition and recommend an appropriate treatment regime.
The treatment chosen will depend on the causes identified by the blood tests as any underlying problems must be addressed first. In severe forms of alopecia areata successful treatment may prove problematic. In other cases the problem may rectify itself without external treatment. At present successful treatment regimes are somewhat limited but the following may prove useful in stimulating hair growth:

Daily application of minoxidil (Rogaine).
Injection of cortisone into patchy areas of the scalp (this must be administered by a physician). Creams and lotions containing cortisone can also be used but results are variable.
Dithranol can be applied to the scalp in mild or early cases.
Application of 100% aloe vera gel.
Massage the scalp with rosemary and lavender essential oils in a jojoba base.
Use of a hair loss product containing the Chinese herb He Shou Wu.
A product called Calosol has recently generated positive feedback.

Please note, however, that none of these is guaranteed to work due to the unpredictable nature of alopecia areata. It is this uncertainty that offers opportunities for scamsters to make outlandish claims. The fact remains, there are no miracle cures for advanced forms of alopecia areata so sufferers may wish to consider other options such as head coverings and wigs.
This does not mean that patients are without hope because, even in severe cases, hair can spontaneously start to grow again even after years of loss.
You can find out more about alopecia areata and other forms of hair loss at the site listed below.
Coping with anxiety through martial arts

“To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the highest skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the highest skill.” -- Sun Tzu, The Art of War

A lot has been said about martial arts. There's a lot punching, kicking, and wrestling involved — all considered as systems and tools of brutal force. This notion or preconceptions about the martial arts were developed, in a large measure, due to films and movies that depicted the combative arts as a means of inflicting violence. But in reality, the true aim of martial arts is quite exactly the opposite. At the core of every fighting philosophy are the values of valor, chivalry, nobility, self-control, and self-sacrifice. This art form is not just about fighting, combat, or self-defense. Martial arts philosophy stresses that people should live in peace and harmony. It also emphasizes  respect for self and others, compassion, and  a high regard for physical and moral excellence. In its purest form, the martial arts is practiced to achieve  strength and enlightenment of the mind, body, and spirit.

For thousands of years, different people from different cultures have practiced and propagated their own system of martial arts.  These unique forms of self-defense and philosophies include the following:
· Karate (empty hand)
· Muay Thai (Thai boxing or kick-boxing)
· Tae Kwon Do (foot hand way)
· Wing Chun (forever spring)
· Silat (to fend off)
· Aikido (the way of harmonious spirit)
· Judo (gentle, soft way)
· Yaw-yan (dance of death)
· Jeet Kune Do (way of the intercepting fist)
· Jiu-jitsu (the soft, pliable method)

Spiritual Benefits

True achievement in martial arts is not gaining the force and skill to smash bricks, cement blocks, baseball bats, and blocks of ice. Neither is it the privilege of wearing different colors of belts nor the prestige of winning sparring championship titles or tournament trophies. The real value of martial arts is in helping individuals harness their natural physical strength and innate goodness of character.
The power within— the elevation of the spirit and the mind. The spiritual side of the martial arts is not religious in any sense but more closely related to the practice of ethics and philosophy. Spirituality in the martial arts is manifested in several training methods and techniques which includes breathing and relaxation drills.  According to experts, these drills may help reduce stress and anxiety. Engaging in martial arts also helps people in their battle against emotional, physical, and mental stress and ailments. The deep breathing exercises, similar to the techniques of yoga, produce a calming effect on a martial artist.  The inhalation of oxygen and the concentration involved in meditative execution of martial arts routines serve to relax the body and provide “stillness” in the mind during practice.  In many martial arts schools, the promotion not only centers of the defensive aspects but also for the benefits of martial arts in coping with anxiety.   Long-time martial arts practitioners attest that physical training has helped them deal with depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, and other related illness.  To some degree, one can even “shout away” both stress and anxiety during a punching or kicking exercise.

Mental Benefits

Today, martial arts therapy is used as an unconventional treatment for children or adults with social anxiety disorders.  Also known as social phobia, this condition refers to excessive, long-lasting anxiety due to various fears, worries and apprehensions. In general, people with social anxiety disorder have an intense fear of being judged or ridiculed by others. People with this condition may often be found in isolation or may only have very few friends.   Through martial arts training, people with anxieties may be taught to improve their social skills at the same time as they learn self-defense.  These individuals are also taught to develop self-respect and respect for others. By attending self-defense classes, people with anxieties slowly gain confidence and develop healthy relationships with other people in and outside the class.  Regular martial arts practice not only provides skills in self-defense.  More importantly, it restores or improves the self-image of the practitioner.

Some precautions in practicing martial arts

In general, the martial arts is an excellent means to achieve physical fitness and spiritual health.  But if it is practiced carelessly or without proper instruction, the physical activities and routines involved in martial arts training may cause harm or injury.  Certain very strenuous movements may put a high stress on the muscles and joints. It is also very important to give special attention to stretching. Stretching regularly to maintain or increase flexibility helps lower the risk of injuries.

Indeed, the martial arts has a deep meaning and philosophy.  It is a centuries-old way of training a fighter --- how not to fight, which is a paradox in the art and science of combat.  These days, it is now one of the most popular means to attain physical health and to control stress and anxiety. But just like everything else in life, martial arts can be used either for good or for bad.  For the serious practitioner, determining the proper and safe ways of training is as important as gaining the true, philosophical aims of the martial arts.

Managing and controlling asthma is very important for asthma sufferers.  Knowing the triggers that affect your airways and learning to avoid these things is key.
Asthma triggers can be any number of things.  If you smoke or allow smoking in your home, you should stop.  Wash sheets, blankets, and pillows once a week and look into dust-proof covers for mattresses to help control dust  mites.  If the pollen count is too high, stay indoors.
Asthma suffers affected by cold air should wear a scarf over the mouth and nose in winter, and should wash their hands often and get a flu shot to prevent colds and the flu.  Food triggers should be avoided.  If animal dander is a problem, owning a pet can be a major hassle.  Keep the pet out of the house, or at least out of your bedroom, and wash your pet often.  Keeping humidity levels at a rate beneficial to your health is crucial, but avoid the use of humidifiers.
Once you know what your triggers are and how to control them, you should make a plan of action with your physician.  Your doctor will help you figure out if any of your current medications are affecting your asthma, and what asthma medication is right for you.  You should follow your asthma plan properly with the correct usage of your medication.  If you're unsure about the use of your medication, consult your doctor, who can teach you how to properly use the inhaler or other treatment methods.
Controlling your asthma is crucial, but if your asthma symptoms are not under control, it can get worse.  If your symptoms happen more often and are getting worse, or you have to use a quick-relief inhaler often (every day is too often), you should contact your doctor for a change in medication or other steps to control your asthma.
Asthma affects so many people and should be managed and controlled to keep the dilemma from getting out of hand.  Using and sticking to a plan that works for both you and your doctor is the only way to ensure that your asthma is controlled properly.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome with constipation is a treatable medical condition. It is characterized by recurring abdominal pain and discomfort, and bloating along with constipation.

IBS with constipation is common to a number of people. Getting accurate information on what causes IBS with constipation may help in improving the condition. It is also recommended to seek medical assistance from doctors who specialize in this type of disorder.

It is not really clear why some people develop IBS with constipation while others do not. IBS with constipation can be caused by a sensitive, slow working gastro-intestinal tract, which causes abdominal pain, bloating and constipation. This was thought to be due to the way the gastrointestinal tract reacts to the changes in serotonin. Serotonin is a natural occurring chemical in the body that plays an important role in making the gastrointestinal tract function normally.

IBS with constipation may also be affected by diet and disease. Most constipation cases are due to insufficient fiber as well as inadequate fluids in the diet. Fibers are important since they help to soften stools, and water or fluids help to flush stools through the body.

Diet is partially to be blamed for the occurrence of constipation especially for people over 65 years old. Constipation occurring in people in this age range is due to medications, poor diet, and lack of water intake, as well as poor muscle tone.

Teenagers or younger people are also at risk of IBS with constipation; in fact, a great number of young people are suffering from irregular bowel movement. They also experience bloating and abdominal pains. Another factor that contributes to IBS constipation is traveling since most people who are traveling tend to suppress the urge to go to the bathroom. There are also some cases where some people just can’t have a bowel movement in bathrooms that are not familiar to them.

There is still no specific cure for IBS with constipation however there are proper treatments for the symptoms that goes with it. Bowel habits may also be stabilized to diminish abdominal cramping as well as lessen the pain associated with bowel movements.

For symptoms that are transient and only happen occasionally, no special treatment may be needed. However, for those who have persistent and chronic symptoms special treatment may be needed. There is no specific therapy that can resolve all symptoms in patients. However, some treatments may prove to be effective in treating symptoms of IBS with constipation.

The first treatment calls for lifestyle changes. This means recognizing and dealing better with stress. Take some time to relax, sleep, and exercise. The diet for IBS entails for eating smaller amounts of food more frequently. This may help in alleviating symptoms of IBS. Eating foods that are low in fat and high in carbohydrates is also beneficial to keeping a healthy intestine.

Fiber in diet is also excellent in controlling IBS with constipation. The dietary fibers are known to add bulk to the stool creating stools that are much larger and much softer making bowel movements easier and less painful.

Medications are applied for patients that have severe and recurrent symptoms of IBS with constipation. Nevertheless, medications like treatments need to be customized to suit various needs of the patient since different patients tend to respond differently with various medications.

Psychotherapy is also applied to some IBS cases since stress sometimes affects bowel movement. Psychotherapy can provide assistance in coping with chronic illness and uncovering emotional triggers that may be present.

If you suspect you are suffering with IBS, you should first consult your primary care physician before taking other steps.

Coping With Hearing Loss

Author Connie Briscoe talks about how she lost her hearing and finally made the decision to buy a hearing aid, a decision that she believes led to her success as a best-selling fiction author.

Article Body:
Oddly enough, I've come to think that losing my hearing was one of the best things that ever happened to me, as it led to the publication of my first novel. But it took a while for me to accept that I was losing my hearing and needed help.

I believe that no matter how tough things get, you can make them better. I have my parents to thank for that. They never allowed me to think that I couldn't accomplish something because of my hearing loss. One of my mother's favorite sayings when I expressed doubt that I could do something was, "Yes, you can."

I was born with a mild hearing loss but began to lose more of my hearing when I was a senior in college. One day while sitting in my college dormitory room reading, I noticed my roommate get up from her bed, go to the princess telephone in our room, pick it up and start talking.  None of that would have seemed strange, except for one thing: I never heard the telephone ring! I wondered why I couldn't hear a phone that I could hear just the day before. But I was too baffled--and embarrassed--to say anything to my roommate or to anyone else.

Late-deafened people can always remember the moments when they first stopped being able to hear the important things in life like telephones and doorbells ringing, people talking in the next room, or the television. It's sort of like remembering where you were when you learned that President Kennedy had been shot or when you learned about the terror attack at the World Trade Center.

Unbeknown to me at the time, that was only the beginning of my downward spiral, as my hearing grew progressively worse. But I was young and still vain enough not to want to buy a hearing aid. I struggled through college by sitting up front in the classroom, straining to read lips and asking people to speak up, sometimes again and again.

By the time I entered graduate school, I could no longer put it off. I knew that I had to buy a hearing aid. By then, even sitting in front of the classroom wasn't helping much. I was still vain enough to wait a few months while I let my hair grow out a bit before taking the plunge but I eventually did buy a hearing aid. It was a big, clunky thing, but I knew that I would have to be able to hear if I ever wanted to graduate.

Soon, my hair length didn't matter much, as the hearing aids got smaller and smaller. They also got better and better at picking up sound. The early aids did little more than make sounds louder evenly across the board. That doesn't work for those of us with nerve deafness, as we may have more hearing loss in the high frequencies than in the lower ones. The newer digital and programmable hearing aids go a long way toward improving on that. They can be set to match different types of hearing loss, so you can, say, increase a particular high frequency more than other frequencies.

Once I got my hearing aid and was able to hear again, I could focus on other things that were important to me--like my education, my career and writing that first novel! I didn't realize it then, but that first hearing aid actually freed me to go on to bigger and better things.

I had long dreamed of writing a novel, but like others kept putting it off. As I began to lose more and more of my hearing, it was a chore just to keep up at work, let alone doing much else. Then once I got the hearing aid, I no longer had to worry about a lot of the things I did before, and I began to think that writing a novel would be the perfect hobby for me. Anyone can write regardless of whether they can hear. I was also determined to prove that losing my hearing would not hold me back.

My first novel was published in 1994 and my fifth in the summer of 2005. Writing turned out to be much more than a hobby, as I've been writing full-time for more than 10 years. I'm now hard at work on my first nonfiction work, a photo-essay book to be published in 2007.  I honestly believe that I would never have sat down at the computer and banged out that first novel if I hadn't lost so much of my hearing. Instead, I'd probably still be an editor somewhere and still dreaming about someday becoming a novelist. That's why I sometimes think that losing my hearing was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

Coping with Job Stress and Heart Disease

Word Count:

While everyone knows that stress has an obvious negative implication on heart health, still, many people have the notion that a heart attack is caused by a slow, progressive build-up of plaque. To think that a blood vessel takes a lifetime to become completely clogged is simply not true for most cases of heart attacks.

Article Body:
Everyone knows that job stress has an obvious negative implication on health, specifically, the cardiovascular system. While various studies have been conducted and validated to establish that job strain increases the risk of a first coronary heart disease, little was known about the connection between stressful jobs and recurrent coronary heart disease.
Recently, however, scientists have decided to bring their research to the next level by studying nearly a thousand men and women who returned to work after having a heart attack. Observations were made for the first six weeks after their return to their jobs, and the again two years later. Early findings show that the people who return to a chronically stressful job after a heart attack are twice as likely to experience another heart attack than those with stress-free jobs. Job strain, as specifically defined by researchers, involves high psychological demands with low decision control. If the stress of the job doesn't change upon return to work, there is a much higher risk of having another heart attack or developing angina and coronary heart disease.
A heart attack occurs when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the heart becomes blocked. Due to the lack of blood flow, it results in a permanent damage to the heart. Blood vessels are blocked by advancing atherosclerotic plaque lesions, a sudden formation of a blood clot, or from the spasming of a coronary artery, which supplies blood to the heart.
Many people have the notion that a heart attack is caused by a slow, progressive build-up of plaque. To think that a blood vessel takes a lifetime to become completely clogged is simply not true for most cases of heart attacks. When an unstable, atherosclerotic plaque lesion, filled with cholesterol and fat, suddenly breaks apart, thus forming an open wound within the artery wall, a heart attack occurs. Blood platelets and clotting proteins rush to the wound and form a clot, called a thrombus. In a matter of moments, the clot can enlarge and may cause obstruction of blood flow to the heart with resultant angina (chest pain). If the blood flow becomes completely obstructed, a heart attack ensues.

In addition to the evidence linking workplace stress and heart disease was another study on the occurrence of cardiac events and heart attacks on Monday than any other day of the week. A study carried out by Japan's Tokyo Women's Medical University and published in the American Journal of Hypertension showed that many workers suffer a significant increase in blood pressure as they return to the office after the weekend.
High blood pressure is associated with a greater risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke, and the results could help to explain why there are more heart attacks on Mondays than at any other time of the week.
While workplace stress can have a negative impact on your health, marriage, on the other hand, can be good for your health. However, it is important to be more specific as a bad marriage can increase the risk of heart disease as compared with married couples who are having great relationships.

title:Coping With Male Pattern Baldness
author:Richard Mitchell
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:10

Androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) is by far the most common cause of hair loss amongst men and a serious problem for many women. For it to develop, three important components must come into play:

A genetic predisposition for balding to occur.
The presence of male hormones.
Aging - enough time for the first two factors to occur.

Despite the common perception, familial baldness patterns are not completely reliable as predictors of future hair loss. The fact that your parent or grandparent exhibited a given pattern does not guarantee your hair loss development will be the same. However, if your father was completely bald and you begin to lose hair excessively at an early age, it's safe to assume you will develop extensive balding.
All normal men and women produce male hormones such as testosterone and DHT. These hormones have a useful role to play in both sexes but it is the fact that androgens occur in much higher concentrations in men that explains why this type of hair loss is more common in males.
The effect of these hormones on hair follicles is as follows:

High levels of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase occur in cells of the hair follicle.
This enzyme converts testosterone into DHT.
DHT causes the robust terminal hairs to miniaturize.
This leaves soft, fine hairs that provide poor scalp coverage.
The growth phase becomes shorter until these soft hairs are lost for good.

Excessive hair loss can occur at any age and may even stop only to start again. As time progresses the process of hair loss accelerates leading to its logical conclusion.
Understanding this process helps to explain how the currently available treatments for male pattern baldness work. Propecia is one of only two FDA-approved hair loss treatments and it works by interfering with the process outlined above. In brief, Propecia inhibits the formation of DHT in the system thus slowing down and eventually stopping the adverse effects of DHT on the hair follicle.
Most of the non-drug, commercially prepared products operate on a similar basis by utilizing natural ingredients that attempt to interfere with the production of DHT. Presently the most popular natural ingredient is saw palmetto although some products combine this with other herbs such as pygeum, stinging nettle and green tea.

title:Coping with Narcolepsy
author:Anne Wolski
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

Are you one of those people who can drop off to sleep anywhere? Do you find that you are going to sleep at inappropriate times? Are you constantly fighting to stay awake during the day despite having a good night’s sleep? If so, you may be suffering from a condition called Narcolepsy.
Narcolepsy is a condition in which the sufferer has episodes in which he/she suddenly falls asleep. These episodes are uncontrollable and can last for anything from a few minutes to hours after which the person will awake feeling refreshed and fully alert. There are usually several episodes in a day.
Often, these attacks occur following a meal but they can happen at any time during the person’s waking hours.
The condition does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity or socio-economic background. It does normally become evident between the ages of 15 to 25 but can affect young children as well as the elderly.
Imagine the effect this condition can have on the lifestyle and the quality of life of the person. The person may be in class or in a meeting with colleagues when he suddenly just drops off to sleep. He may be at a party, crossing a street, having sex or, worse still, driving a vehicle when one of these episodes occurs. As you can see, the results of this illness could be catastrophic for both the sufferer and for the people around him.
The cause of Narcolepsy is unknown but it is agreed that it involves a malfunction of the neurotransmitters, the part of the brain that controls sleep and awake states. It is also possible that hormones such as melatonin may be maladjusted, thus failing to do their job which is to control normal sleep patterns.
There are also three auxiliary conditions associated with Narcolepsy. These are called cataplexy, hallucinations, and sleep paralysis.
Cataplexy involves sudden, temporary muscle weakness and is the most common secondary condition to Narcolepsy. Cataplexy is believed to occur during intense emotional states such as anger or excitement. During a Cataplectic attack, the person is totally aware and has total recall of the attack later on.
Hallucinations occur quite frequently in people with Narcolepsy and can be visual, audible, or tactile. These hallucinations can be terrifying for the person as they are similar to bad nightmares. Historically, people with these hallucinations accompanying Narcolepsy were misdiagnosed as having Schizophrenia.
Sleep Paralysis describes the feeling of not being able to move immediately before falling asleep and upon wakening. It usually lasts anywhere from a few seconds to half an hour and is generally accompanied by hallucinations.
Because Narcolepsy is not curable, the condition is treated symptomatically. This involves a strict sleep regime such as proper night-time sleep, avoidance of shift work and alcohol, and taking short scheduled naps throughout the day
The main drug therapy used in Narcolepsy is stimulants. Sufferers of this condition are also encouraged to drink more coffee and caffeinated drinks to help control their need for sleep.
In treating the auxiliary conditions of cataplexy, hallucinations and sleep paralysis, the person is often prescribed antidepressants
Prevention of the attacks is obviously a very important factor and can be assisted by simply following a sensible sleep regime at night, taking daytime naps where possible, avoiding heavy meals, and the intake of more caffeine.
Emotional support is another important factor. The person needs to have friends and family who can understand what is happening and not become upset by it, thus increasing the stress and anxiety that the person is probably already feeling. Obviously, if the person is married or in a relationship, their partner needs to be very understanding and supportive.
In summary, Narcolepsy is characterized by uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep. This may be accompanied by muscle weakness, hallucinations, and/or sleep paralysis. There is no cure and treatment is symptomatic. It is important to take preventative measures to avoid these episodes so that you can live a reasonably good lifestyle.

Coping with Sexual Misinformation

Word Count:

It is about sexual health, how the lack of information can
cause unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.  Also about how it is important to inform the youth about reproductive health, how sexual health clinics pick up from where the sex education programs from school left off.

Sexual health clinic

Article Body:
Sex, as a conversation piece, is not the best way to break the ice.  This topic is still considered taboo for some conservative countries.  More so is the idea of incorporating sexual education into the academic curriculum.

Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders at a Community Health Centers of Arkansas summit on health care said that the lack of sex education in the nation is "deafening" and it makes children vulnerable to sexual assault and sexually transmitted diseases. She added that the country is "paying a very heavy price for not educating our young people."  She also said that abstinence-only sex education programs are unrealistic, adding to it “abstinence-only programs that do not teach contraception will not solve the issue.”

Studies show that most of the youth today who become sexually active, engage in the act without accurate information about reproductive health. This insufficiency of information can increase the risk of unplanned pregnancy and/or sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Sexual health education can be one means of helping young people prevent these problems and improve their future reproductive health.

According to an expert on adolescent health, sex education programs may be the only way that the youth can learn accurate information about reproductive health. Sex education programs may offer the only setting in which young people can attain the skills necessary to maintain good reproductive health.

Misinformation and misunderstandings about conception, family planning, and STD risks abound among young adults. In Jamaica, research conducted by the University of the West Indies and FHI's Women's Studies Project found that a group of young adults had little knowledge about reproductive health issues. The study surveyed about 500 students, ages 11 to 14, as they began an in-school family life education program designed to delay first pregnancy. Students in this group were considered to be at high-risk for early sexual activity.

Because of the lack of information on sex and how to cope with its consequences, a lot of our youth either have unwanted pregnancies and/or STDs, and they don’t know what to do.  Further discussion on this matter is necessary, and that’s where sexual health clinics play an important role.

A sexual health clinic is a clinic that specializes in curing sexually-related concerns. Sexual health clinics have been known as venereal disease (VD) clinics, sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics and genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinics.  Almost every sexual health clinic will, at the very least, have one public health nurse who can discuss sexual issues with visitors and patients and provide referrals to community agencies for additional information. Bigger clinics may have a full medical staff who can provide a full range of sexuality-related test services, including testing for, protection from or treatment of STDs, and perhaps even psychological counseling. Very few sexual health clinics offer abortion services.

The biggest concern for a lot of people is the issue of confidentiality. GUM clinics are aware of this matter, and take every step to protect every patient’s privacy. All material relating to every visit is totally confidential and will never be made available to anybody who shouldn't see it. If the patient would prefer, they don't even have to give their name.

Where the school’s duty to inform kids of reproductive health ends, that’s where the sexual health clinic’s duty begins.  Being sexually active is a choice and it must me made with utmost care.  Know the facts before you jump in the bandwagon and engage in sex.

Coping With Sleep Bruxism

Word Count:

Sleep bruxism is the third most common sleep disorder.  It is more prevalent in children who often outgrow it, but the condition may be different in adults.Without proper treatment, sleep bruxism may cause serious damage to the teeth and surrounding tissue, as well as trigger headaches and jaw pain.

sleep disorder, stress, treatment, headaches, smoking

Article Body:
About eight to 10 percent of the adult population have a secret malady called sleep bruxism, a sleep disorder characterized by the grinding or clenching of teeth.  Some people do it unconsciously even when they are awake.  Stress usually has something to do with it, but the origins of the disorder are quite varied.  The effects of bruxism are seldom anywhere near as bad as during sleep when the body’s protective mechanisms are turned off. Without proper treatment, the condition may cause serious damage to the teeth and surrounding tissue, as well as trigger headaches and jaw pain.

Bruxism can be a real nuisance. “It’s much like having a large football player standing on the tooth,” said Dr. Noshir Mehta, Chairman of General Dentistry at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and Director of its Craniofacial Pain Center.

Under normal circumstances, a person's teeth make contact for about 20 minutes a day with only 20 to 40 pounds of pressure to be able to chew. During sleep bruxism, however, the upper and lower teeth come into direct contact in as much as 40 minutes per hour, and with a force of about 250 pounds on the first molar.

Sleep bruxism is not a disease, but it is the third most common sleep disorder after sleep talking and snoring.  This condition is more prevalent in children, who often outgrow it, and causes behind adult cases are very different from those of the younger age bracket.

In the 1960s, Dr. Gilles Lavigne, a Professor of Dentistry and Medicine at the University of Montreal, and President of the Canadian Sleep Society explained that bruxism was thought to be the body's response to “malocclusion” --- a problem that arises when the upper and lower teeth don't fit together.  Due to lack of clinical evidence, the theory was not accepted in the medical and dental community.

Later on, stress was cited to be the cause of the sleep disorder proponents of this theory failed to explain why not everyone with sleep bruxism was stressed and not everyone with stress ground their teeth. Some recent research studies also reveal the connection of sleep bruxism to neurochemicals like dopamine, but its significance is still being questioned. Dr. Lavigne’s latest studies have identified a pattern of activation in the autonomic nervous system that correlates strongly with sleep bruxism. He emphasized that sleep bruxism is not an indicator of neurological disease.  No matter what science eventually discovers as the cause of sleep bruxism, current medical literature point out to stress, smoking, alcohol, caffeine as the main “triggers” of the disorder.

Relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or even acupuncture may help promote overall heath and wellness. Doctors, however, say that these alternative healing methods will not cure or relieve sleep bruxism.

For treatment, anti-anxiety medications and other pharmacological treatments may be prescribed by doctors to help bring bruxism to a halt. Patients, however, must be aware of that these drugs are potentially habit-forming.  “It works too well,” said Dr. Michael Gelb, a clinical professor at the New York University College of Dentistry.  The drug “working well” also entails the potential of substance abuse if the patient is left to use the drug without doctor supervision.

In the meantime, dentists suggest that patients may use a mouth guard.  The mouth guard is a small plastic device that covers some or all of the teeth to protect them against damage, but does not really stop the grinding or clenching itself. The temporary relief can be quite expensive, as the device is customized to fit the user.  But a more affordable version can be bought at over-the-counter drugstores which are usually better than nothing.

Dr. Charles McNeill, director of the Center for Orofacial Pain at the University of California, San Francisco agrees that mouth guards may protect the teeth but should only be for temporary use as it may also be more likely to induce a chewing response and increase bruxism.  They can also cause irreversible damage to the bite, or arrangement of the teeth. Customized mouth guards made by a dentist last longer, fit better and are generally designed to distribute the force of grinding to reduce jaw pain.

title:Coping With Stress and Anxiety

Among the hardest parts of living in the modern world is stress and anxiety.  With worries about work, the environment, the economy, natural disasters, terrorism, and the general state of the world, it seems that there is no end to the number of things to worry about.  Though we cannot control many of these things, they still weigh on our minds and cause us stress and anxiety.  However, despite these concerns, we should try to avoid stress and anxiety.
Stress and anxiety are, at their hearts, mental problems.  They are conditions in which the mind is racing and constantly circling around certain concerns.  The concerns may be seemingly mundane, but the concerns keep recurring until they push out all the other thoughts in the brain and create their own towering mass of worry.  And this tower is, in itself self-propagating simply because stress and anxiety tend to create themselves because stress and anxiety cause the mind to condition itself to stress and anxiety.
There is research to suggest that the mind gets used to stress and anxiety and, once it is conditioned, it will quickly return to stress and anxiety.  In fact, there is some evidence that shows that stress conditioning may actually begin when we are too young to do anything about it.  Children who face a great deal of stress will find their minds altered such that they will quickly return to a state of stress at the slightest provocation.  It is almost as though the mind misses the state of stress and anxiety and wants to return to it once it has found the state.
Unfortunately, this creates serious problems not only for the mind, but also the body.  Stress and anxiety put a great many demands on the human body.  It causes headaches, high blood pressure, ulcers, sleep problems, immune system deficiencies and can even swell the joints, which can cause severe problems with conditions such as arthritis.  As well, stress and anxiety can result in depression, memory problems, and even alcohol and drug abuse for those who suffer from stress and anxiety regularly.  Thus, stress and anxiety are not merely problems of the mind, but they are problems of the mind that can cause problems in the body.  The mind does, in surprising ways, control the body.  And a mind that is overly taxed can lead to a body that is overly taxed.
Thus, you must understand that you can also control your mind.  Stress and anxiety do not need to take over your mind.  In fact, you can control how your mind responds to the problems that arise in life.
Remember that you can decide not to be stressed.  You do not have to be anxious.  You can change your mind and let things slide away.  Yes, there are many things in this world to worry about.  However, worrying about them will not change many aspects of the modern world.  Constantly thinking about work, the environment, the economy, or politics will not change them.  Instead, resolve to change things that you can change and do not worry about what you cannot control.
The thing to keep in mind is a sense of perspective.  Yes, work is stressful, but do you need to worry about being attacked by a lion when you leave the office?  When you go shopping for groceries, do you need to think about whether there will be a pack of marauding barbarians in the produce section?  Hopefully, the answer is, "No."  Thus, you do not have the same concerns as our forebears and you should keep that in mind.  Life is pretty safe these days and the so-called "Age of Stress" is entirely of our own creation.  We are stressed about things that we decide to be stressed about.  And the things that we are stressed about really aren't that important in the long-run scheme of things.
Stress and anxiety are, seemingly, enough to worry about on their own.  So don't fall into the trap of keeping them going.  Keep life in perspective, keep yourself on an even keel and remember that you can control your own mind.  If you can manage to do that, stress and anxiety to not need to take over your life.

author:Richard Mitchell
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:10

Telogen effluvium is a hair loss condition that is characterized by a general thinning of the hair over a period of months. It is usually found in people who have recently experienced trauma with common causes including childbirth, major surgery and severe illness.
It occurs when one or more factors interfere with the normal growth cycle and manifests when large numbers of hairs are prematurely pushed from the growth (anagen) phase into the resting (telogen) phase. The telogen hairs are loosely attached at the roots and fall out easily. Fortunately, this unnatural growth behavior is only temporary and completely reversible.
Diagnosis of telogen effluvium involves a three step process:

Assess the type of hair loss suffered - generally telogen effluvium is typified by a rapid thinning throughout the scalp rather than the localized loss evident in most other conditions.
Review life events over the previous six months - typically some sort of traumatic event will have occurred.
Undergo a hormone test to rule out other abnormalities.

As far as treatment is concerned, telogen effluvium usually disappears as the effects of the trauma previously experienced begin to wear off. Consequently, there are no treatments specific to this condition although a product such as minoxidil (Rogaine) may help to accelerate the regrowth process.
You can find out more about telogen effluvium and other forms of hair loss at the site listed below.

Article Body:
It may be hard to believe but child sexual abuse really happens.  No matter what race, religion and economic status, children are getting sexually abused.  And its effects don't stop until the child grows through adolescence and into adulthood.
Most children who have become victims of sexual abuse usually grow up struggling with depression, self-hatred, alcoholism, drug addiction, depression, eating disorders, the inability to trust, and thoughts of suicide. They often feel hopeless, like there was no light at the end of the tunnel of despair.  They experience nightmares and would wake up in the middle of the night with panic attacks. They fear they are getting crazy, that something was wrong with them. Although, they may be involved in a relationship, it was hard for them to be sexual, and they shut off during sexual activity. Most of the time, they just feel empty, disconnected, and alone.
Sexual abuse can take many different forms.  It could be an unwanted touch by a babysitter, a brother or sister, or even a parent, step-parent, friend, and even from a church minister. For others, it may be a recurring abuse that lasts for many years.  It could also be a one-time occurrence, such as a date rape or coercive sex with a partner. A lot of times, survivors of sexual abuse don't speak about their experience, sometimes holding it as a secret they share with no one for years.
Many blame themselves, feeling shame, guilt, and depression. Some victims experience flashbacks and live in fear. Others just try to block it all out. Their spiritual struggles and injuries are often deep and painful.  They may feel abandoned by God, lose their faith, or feel a pervasive sense of spiritual isolation.
There are different ways to heal and restore wholeness for those who suffered from the terrible trauma of sexual abuse. Victims of sexual abuse can heal from the depression, the anxiety, the panic, the loneliness, and the other ways that sexual abuse creates havoc.  Healing may not come easy, but it is possible to regain a sense of wholeness once again.
In order to address the deep psychological and spiritual wounds of sexually abused individuals, spiritually-integrated therapy helps in overcoming issues, such as anger at God, abandonment by God, and spiritual disconnection.  It involves counseling on how sexual abuse creates deep feelings of shame, and how this shame covers the true beauty within. They explore how sexual abuse affects their sexuality and their beliefs and ideas about their bodies. In general, spiritually-integrated therapy healing, growth, and empowerment. According to a research study on the effectiveness of spiritually-integrated therapy, all of the participants reported significant decreases in psychological distress by the end of the therapy, and at a one to two-month follow-up, including significant decreases in depression and anxiety.  Moreover, participants who were facing significant spiritual struggles reported increases in their spiritual well-being and spiritual health across the course of the therapy and at follow-up. This kind of spiritually-integrated therapy involves several individual sessions with a trained psychotherapist and complete healing may involve a long-term course.  Although some of its aspects can be used on their own to begin or speed up their healing process.

title:Copper And Your Health
author:John Sanderson

Copper is a trace element mineral that serves a wide variety of purposes within the body, both on its own and as a cofactor, meaning it is an essential part of chemical processes that involve other vitamins, minerals, other nutrients or other substances. Although the body requires a comparatively tiny amount of copper per day, even that little bit is essential to optimum health and performance.
Copper came to be recognized as in the 1870’s as a basic part of our blood. This mineral is called an elemental because it is a metal. In terms of concentration, it is the third greatest metal present in our bodies. Copper is present throughout the body, and serves many purposes that influence physical and mental health and function. In addition to the influence it has independently, it acts as a cofactor, or partner, in many enzymes and processes, affecting a wide variety of bodily functions and systems.
Copper works with Vitamin C in the production of collagen and elastin, which are connective tissues that, quite literally, hold the body together. In addition to this aspect of wound healing, copper also has a role in the first step to wound healing – blood clotting. It also partners with iron in the making of red blood cells, which serve the essential purpose of bringing oxygen throughout the body, as well as helps the body to absorb and use iron. It is helps to make bones, working with calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, Vitamin D and Vitamin C.
Melanin, the substance that gives skin and hair their color, requires copper for its production. Copper has a role in the production of hormones that come from the thyroid, and thus is important to the body’s rate of metabolism, which in turn affects body weight. Body weight affects the start of puberty and the onset of sexual maturity. Copper has a role in the nervous system, as well. It is necessary in the creation of the myelin sheath, which protects nerves and enhances their communication. The connective tissues and nerves in the brain require copper for both structure and function. Copper also serves as a cofactor in the production of the body’s important antioxidant enzymes, making a significant contribution to the control of damaging free radicals.
Copper has a role in each of the body’s major systems and processes. As a trace element, the body requires just a tiny bit of copper daily. Adults should have just 1.5mg to 3mg per day. It is important to note that too much copper can be toxic to the body’s system. The body’s systems are basic are regulated by chemical reactions, and the chemicals in the body are a delicately balanced group.
Nutritional supplements can offer a safe and reliable means of making sure that the body receives all the nutrients that it needs daily. However, when using supplements, it is important to be aware of the upper levels of tolerance, and to make sure that your dietary supplement dosages fall within that range, staying well below toxic points and maintaining the system’s healthful balance.
title:Coral Calcium: The Preferred Source of Absorbable Calcium
author:Jeremy Maddock
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

Coral Calcium is an excellent source of readily accessible and absorbable calcium in the body. Superior 100% pure fossilized, coral calcium is harvested from above ground, meaning that no harm is done to any living coral.
This unique formula contains a form of calcium, which is alkaline, and supports the body’s pH (potential hydrogen) balance to promote tissue health. Coral calcium promotes healthy oxygen levels in the body and helps to maintain immune system function as well as promote waste removal.
The Importance of Alkalinity
Maintaining an alkaline pH is critical to cellular health, and if your body's pH is unbalanced, you will have problems effectively assimilating vitamins and minerals. According to Bob L. Owen, Ph.D., D.Sc., author of Why Calcium?, “when coral calcium is added to water it raises and balances the body’s pH levels. Consumption of this alkalinized water also balances the body’s acid/alkaline levels, thus bringing about many health benefits.”
The Importance of Oxygen in the Body
Scientists have discovered that a low level of oxygen can disrupt the body's natural functioning ability and can cause harm to the immune system. Coral calcium promotes healthy oxygen levels, and helps to process and remove toxic wastes that may build up in the body.
Why Fossilized Coral Calcium is Superior
This advanced formula contains an organic composition very similar to that of the human skeleton, and contains calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and other trace minerals essential to good health.
Cord Blood Accreditation

Word Count:

If you have decided that you want to store the blood from your baby's umbilical cord it is an important step to compare cord blood banks in a bid to make sure that you select the correct organization. You would be forgiven for thinking that all of the organizations offer the same things, but some companies offer more than other companies. There are a number of things you should consider before making the all-important final decision. Some factors might be considered.

blood cord banking, cord blood, blood cord, umbilical cord banking, umbilical cord bank, cord blood stem cell, cord blood donation, cord blood registry

Article Body:
When you begin to compare cord blood banks one of the first things you may notice is that some of them are accredited while others are not. Accreditation is voluntary but being accredited by the AABB means that the company you are considering has high standards with regards to most of the factors you will look at yourself.

The use of stem cell transplants is quite a new technique, however, successful cord blood transfusions have taken place and this means that there are organizations that have successfully stored and eventually used the cord blood in question. It may seem unfair to judge a company just because they haven't had the opportunity to prove that there systems, technique and facilities are up to scratch but the fact remains that if your child needs the use of their cord blood in ten years time you want to be absolutely certain that the company you have entrusted with this will be able to unfreeze the blood and find that it has retained it's potency. Some of the well established companies have 100% success rates with tens of previous cases. This is a statistic not be taken lightly.

One factor that you might overlook when trying to compare cord blood banks is whether the company in question dedicate any or enough money to funding further research. In the case of many banks, funding is primarily used to research advances in storage techniques and the techniques in which the blood is transported and prepared for use. If a company does not invest enough money in this then they will eventually be left behind by the companies that do. Inevitably it is you, or indeed your children, who will suffer the consequences.

Financial security.
When investing time, money or your children's cord blood in a company it is important that that company will still be in operation should the day arrive when you need the blood in question. If a company fails financially while your baby's blood is stored in their facility then there is a reasonable chance that you will not be able to do anything about moving the blood. Once cord blood goes into storage it should not be removed and transported from location to location if it is at all possible to avoid this. You will be storing the umbilical cord blood for up to 15 years, and that's only presuming that no further advances are made, so you need to be as sure as possible that the company will still be in operation in 15 years time.

By selecting a company that is affiliated to a large hospital or other organization you can afford yourself greater peace of mind that they will indeed still be around when the time comes to use the blood you have in storage. Many major hospitals do affiliate with some of the more famous and well established cord blood banks and for true peace of mind you should consider using one of these companies. This also offers you the benefit that that hospital in question will be willing to undertake a transfusion using that blood.

Donating cord blood.
Of course, money plays a part in any major decision of this kind and, unfortunately, it isn't always possible to pick the company you would ideally settle on in other circumstances. In fact, the cost may add up to prove to be more than you can afford. In which case, you should not feel guilty about it, but you should instead consider donating the cord blood.

Article Body:
Coronary heart disease is a condition that arises from increased amounts of atheromatous plaques that gather within the arteries. Many people who develop this condition may not begin showing symptoms until years after they have initially developed the disease. The most dangerous symptom of this disease is a heart attack, and this will generally occur after the atheromatous plaques break apart and begin restricting the flow of blood into the heart. Coronary artery disease is a common cause for sudden death.

This condition is known for having varying extremes. Certain people can be defined as being asymptomatic, and will have an early form of the disease where the flow of blood is not blocked. Doctors who perform coronary angiograms at this point may not be able to detect the disease because the lumen within the artery has not been reduced in size. However, the atheromatous plaques will grow into the walls of the arteries, and once they cause the lumen to expand, the blood flow will be restricted. Many researchers believe that this process took many years to occur, but there have been some cases where the plaque would rupture, and the progression of this disease would increase much faster than normal.

If the atheromatous plaques do not block more than 70 percent of the artery, patients will typically not begin showing the symptoms that are associated with the disease. Once the atheromatous plaques block more than 70 percent of the artery, the patient will begin showing symptoms. The heart will begin working harder to increase the amount of blood that flows to it, and the lumen may nearly become completely blocked. A patient who is in this situation will typically have suffered from multiple heart attacks, and may have angina as well. The restriction of blood flow to the heart is called ischema, and the cells will starve because they don't have oxygen.

There are a number of things responsible for the development of coronary artery disease. Smoking or being overweight is a common cause, while a lack of vitamin C can also lead to the development of this condition. There is also evidence that this disease is genetic in nature. Someone who comes from a family where many members have developed coronary heart disease will be much more likely to develop it themselves. People who have large amounts of triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins have an increased chance for developing this condition. Angina is defined as the pain a patient will go through when they have an advanced form of the disease.

Coronary artery disease is very common in the West, and has been called the number one killer of Americans. The best way to avoid it is to avoid smoking and reduce the amount of cholesterol in your body. People who are overeweight will want to exercise and avoid foods that are rich in saturated fats. Those who live a sedentary lifestyle will want to go out as much as possible to be physically active. It is also important to make sure you consume decent amounts of vitamin C.

Corporate Bureaucracy: Dealing With And Surviving Catch-22 At Work

Word Count:

Every so often, people working in a big company feel that the internal corporate bureaucracy is too much to handle. In some cases, the bureaucracy can be perceived as a catch-22, which may or may not be entirely accurate. To prevent the sort of paranoia this tends to bring, it is best that employees regularly find ways to relieve stress and feel totally separated from the bureacracy.

stress and anxiety, stress relief, nausea, fatigue

Article Body:
Corporate life can take a serious toll on the mind, particularly if you happen to be the one caught amidst the company's hustle and bustle. There are a thousand things that need to be done any given shift, and you'd need at least a shift just to get one of those tasks to be done properly. There are also the occasional added duties of the typical employee, such as the meeting with the boss, rant sessions with fellow employees, and the pressures and responsibilities that the typical worker adds to his already overwhelming set of problems. The need for stress relief  is most commonly seen among people who are doing the dry grunt-work of a company, the ones working the trenches at the front lines of the “corporate war.”

Of course, a company employee may not necessarily be fighting a “war” against the company's enemies, or business rivals, as the case may be. For anyone who has ever read the novel “Catch-22,” the rather daunting concept of a soldier fighting the rigid bureaucracy of his own army is a humorous, unpleasant yet all too realistic storyline. Unfortunately, for some corporate employees, the Catch-22 is an everyday ordeal.  They find themselves willing to fight even their own corporate bosses. Even worse is when there is no convenient or regular source of stress relief, which tends to wear down a person's mind and makes the situation much worse. Once a person thinks the situation is getting worse, it inevitably really does become worse, through some dismiss it as a mere quirk of fate. Yes, this sounds terribly pessimistic, but there are several people who go to their jobs day after day --- resigned to go through the daily drudgery.

The fact is, there are always a few disgruntled, disenfranchised, and disillusioned employees who will look at the corporate power structure and only see the Catch-22 bureaucracy. They literally see policies leading them around in circles, with stress relief being just a pipe dream --- with each step leading to  the path of madness. Of course, madness is not included as a job skill requirement although in some lines of work that involve creativity, being somewhat “looney” is an unwritten prerequisite.

Dealing with a Catch-22 bureaucracy can be taxing on your mental health, whether you're fighting it or you're trying to work with it. There is ample anecdotal evidence to show that attempting to work within a bureaucracy that keeps on going around in circles can drive employees to develop frequent bouts of nausea.  Besides the nausea, chronic fatigue also seems to be a growing problem among employees that attempt to survive in a Catch-22 environment. Mental fatigue is also a problem, as some people tend to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out how to get out of the mess that the company's policies have gotten them into, all the while realizing that any attempt to get out is likely just going to get them deeper into the problem.

Naturally, from a realistic point of view, the above situation is hardly feasible, but if work-related stress and anxiety are not dealt with in a timely and effective manner, it can lead to some unpleasant situations. For the most part, the common reaction when the situations get extreme is to simply try and find a way to escape, or at least get into a position where the bureaucracy is less constrained. In a corporate environment, the former is little more than just removing yourself from the company's employ, and the latter means working within the constraints to get into a position of power. Of course, working twice as hard just to get away from the bureaucracy means the company will be getting more work out of an employee, but not have to pay more. Why does that sound like exactly what your typical corporate slave driver actually wants? If it does start sounding that way, then it is a safe assumption that your stress and anxiety at work has gone past being an anxiety disorder and developed into a full-blown paranoia. Next thing you know, you'll start thinking they're all out to get rid of you.

Correct activation and use of the gluteal muscles in a dancer.

Word Count:

It is often asked in regards to ballet training how hard the bottom muscles should be working. This article makes a distinction between the turn-out and gluteal muscles and endeavours to make clear when and when not the gluteal muscles should be activated when dancing. A test for the gluteal muscles is included. Correct use of these muscles will help you in everything from jumps, to your work en fondu, your arabesque line, your back, and even your flexibility into the splits.

Article Body:
Your 'Gluteal Muscles' are actually extremely important when you are dancing, and the correct use of them will help you in everything from jumps, to your work en fondu, your arabesque line, your back, and even your flexibility into the splits. It is important to work out the correct way to use these muscles, and to avoid the downside of over-using them such as tight turnout muscles, poor hip mobility, and a 'too perky' bum under your tutu!
The first thing you have to understand is the difference between your turnout muscles and your gluteals. In 'The Perfect Pointe Book' (A book designed for the education of dancers. Page 54) there are great pictures to demonstrate the difference. The turnout muscles are a group of 6 deep muscles that connect from the bumpy bone on the outside of your hip (greater trochanter) towards your tail bone (sacrum) and other parts of your pelvis. They turn the top bone (femur) of your leg out, and there are six of them so that they can work to turn the hip out, no matter what range the leg is in (helps in a Grande rond de jambe).
Your Gluteal muscles on the other hand, work to extend the hip (in other words, take the leg behind you). There are some other muscles that can also do this job, so often people will have no idea that their bottom is not working properly. The hamstrings and some of the low back muscles will be overused if the gluteals are not switching on properly, especially in an arabesque. The Gluteals should also contract strongly during push off in allegro, and work to control your landing.
If you often feel tight in your low back, and struggle to keep your knee straight in an arabesque derrière, the chances are that you are using the hamstrings to lift the leg, rather than the gluteals. If you do this repeatedly, and especially if you use your hamstrings too much when walking, all the extra contracting will tighten them up, no matter how often you stretch your hamstrings.
Try this simple test to see how well the gluteals are working.
· Lie on your tummy with your legs out straight, in parallel.
· Turn your head to one side and place your fingertips into the middle of each of your bottom muscles.
· Keeping it straight at the knee, lift one leg just off the floor.
· Notice whether anything happens under your fingertips, and even better, note where in the movement it comes on.
· Some people will find it hard to bring the muscle on at all; others will find that it comes on at the end of the range only.
· For some people, it will come on beautifully, automatically!
· To take the maximum load off your hamstrings, the gluteals should start the movement, and then continue to work throughout the movement.
· Test the difference side to side, and test your friends. If you are testing other people, place one hand on the back of their hamstrings and one on their bottom.
· Remember, it is okay for the hamstrings to work a little, we just want the bottom to be doing its fair share!
Once you are sure that the bottom is working, you must know when to use it. I hate hearing girls being told to grip with their bottom throughout class. This is not necessary and will build too much tension in the area. All muscles work best when they are allowed to relax and then contract to perform their specific movement.
Another tip is to see if your bottom muscles come on when you are walking. Especially up stairs or up any incline, the gluteal muscles of the supporting leg should squeeze on a little to take the strain off your hamstrings. If you can master this, you will be amazed at how quickly your flexibility will improve.
The one major time when the gluteal muscles should not be doing too much is when you are just standing in first, second or fifth positions of the feet. The turnout muscles will be gently working to maintain the position; however your gluteal muscles should be reasonably relaxed, and ready for action.
· Stand in parallel, with your finger tips on your bottom.
· Rock your weight back onto your heels and turn the legs out, focusing on starting the movement from your hips.
· Place your toes back down on the floor (you will be in a small first position) and focus on what you are feeling through the hips. Can you keep the thighs turned out with your deep turnout muscles, and still have your outer bottom muscle relaxed? This may take time, and patience, to achieve, but will really improve your dancing.
Using the gluteals and turnout muscles in this way is the secret to improving the mobility of your hips and height of the leg en l'air. You must learn to use the muscles the way they were designed to be used for optimum effectiveness. Further exercises for turnout and gluteal strengthening are available in The Perfect Pointe Book.

Article Body:
First, in order to chose the correct contact lenses and maintain eye comfortable., We recommended the following methods:

1. Measurement must fbe conducted by eye care professional Optometrists:

Measurement of corneal curvature and the degree of myopia to be accurate.
Contact lenses too tight will cause corneal edema, skin damage, while the wearer is too loose will slide, not clear, ?¡ãlooking for experienced experts will be more than a layer of protection,?¡À

2. View their working habits:

contact lenses that usually need to see distant objects, such as drivers, pilots and other flight, the need for more accurate checks, in particular the deployment of astigmatism.

3. Seek medical examination.

The eye care professional will help you do a detailed inspection to determine the appropriate types of contact lenses.

For example, many people in order to get rid of the dry eye problems, high water content to buy contact lenses, ?¡ãThis is the consumers to buy contact lenses, the most common myth,?¡À contact lenses experts explained that the high water content in water , in order to maintain moisture content, surface water will absorb the eyeball, causing serious water shortage in eyes.

Moreover, would increase chances of infection. Contact lenses absorption of tear evaporation, more protein and sediment accumulation, ?¡ãencourage the breeding of bacteria.?¡À Dry eyes, tears secretion less, not more than 50 water content of the choice of contact lenses, because high levels of contact lenses absorb it will tear, so that more dry cornea.

Bausch & Lomb and Johnson & Johnson hold the same view, the statement of the high water content than for non-dry eye contact lenses of the people.
Seek medical check Another benefit is early uncovered eye diseases. For example, slight conjunctivitis, easy to be ignored and treated early, to avoid wearing contact lenses after deterioration.

4. Basic maintenance work can not be less
Elections and the maintenance of proper maintenance mode is also very important.
The maintenance of contact lenses available in the market range, how the selection ?
1) whether the Department of Health permission to see the name, if approved, will be the Department of Health for medical lose the first word.
2) asked the staff members choose the most suitable to wear contact lenses made of syrup, ?¡ãis the best choice of sterilization components of the syrup macromolecules,?¡À contact lenses experts explained that the small molecule stuck in the syrup easily in contact lenses, and then slowly release , Instead of corneal damage skin cells.
3) to the best of citric acid protein composition of syrup, 4 inLOOK contact lenses Monopoly experts pointed out that such a charge to use and the number of ion replacement role in the maintenance of, in comparison to the chemical composition of the protein to reduce the irritation.

5. Rigid good or soft-good ?

From the perspective of the eye care, rigid contact lenses correct astigmatism and myopia of the better-performing, especially a high degree of astigmatism and irregular astigmatism people. Hard glasses and high oxygen permeability rate, not cause corneal lack of oxygen, ?¡ãis a more healthy choices,?¡À contact lenses experts frankly, but because of wear after a foreign body sensation, the public acceptance of the low.

The high water content in soft contact lenses, comfort better than corneal lenses, the wearer is not easy shedding and displacement, the more popular the past, soft contact lenses by increasing the water content and increase the oxygen permeability of comfort, but relatively Allergies and raise the risk of infection, the latest version of the silicon material of plastic water, oxygen permeability rate was as high as 100 or more, and the almost rigid, is a good choice.

Correct your acid / alkaline balance by the water you drink: What the experts say
In health circles there has been much recent talk about acid / alkaline imbalance. Let's see if we can clarify how experts recommend we correct this imbalance.
The problem
Your body functions best when neither too acid nor too alkaline. Unfortunately almost all of us have become acidic due to diet, drinks and stress -- both psychological and from pollution. Acids can build up in the body's system causing the body's pH to be out of balance.
The effects
According to Dr. Stefan Kuprowsky, "Acid wastes build up in the body in the form of cholesterol, gallstones, kidney stones, arterial plaque, urates, phosphates and sulfates. These acidic waste products are the direct cause of premature aging and the onset of chronic disease."
When this occurs, the body will restore its optimal pH by depleting certain minerals, such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, from organs and bones. In addition, your immune system may become fatigued from dealing with an excess of acid. Your body then stores acidic wastes in 'hiding places' such as muscles etc. rather than releasing the acids into the bloodstream.
As Dr. Robert Atkins, the noted author, health and diet expert, notes: "Just about every condition I can think of, from arthritis to diabetes to cancer, is associated with acidity."
"The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause...too much tissue acid waste in the body!" Theodore A. Baroody, ND, Ph.D.
What can be done?
A vast body of research reveals you can help the body neutralize acids in the blood and maintain a balanced pH, by taking some simple steps, such as:
· Exercise
· Avoiding highly acid-forming food and drink.
· Drinking the right water
What is the "right" water?
"International studies show that populations with little or no history of illness, such as cancer, drink higher pH (alkaline) waters. After all potential risk factors were considered and factored out, it became evident that they had been drinking waters with a pH of 9.0 to 10.0." Dr. Leonard Horowitz in "Aids and Ebola"
Alkaline ionized water "first came to notice in Japan, where researchers noted that people drinking water that came from certain fast-moving rocky mountain streams enjoyed extraordinarily good health. It turned out that this naturally occurring water was alkaline and had a different structure and electrical properties." Larry Clapp, PhD. in "Prostate Health in 90 days"
Alkaline water is produced at home with a small kitchen appliance called a water ionizer (long in use in Japan and Korea).  As water ionizers have become more popular in North America, more health professionals have had the opportunity to evaluate their effects on their clients:
Sue Pollock, N.D. writes, we can "assist the body in being more alkaline with …drinking alkaline water."
"I believe that the best water is water that is alkaline (reduced) and purified using a small device known as a water ionizer." (Dr. Stefan Kuprowsky)
"It is my opinion that ionized water will change the way in which all health practitioners and the public approach their health in the coming years." Dr. T. Baroody in "Alkalize or Die."
Why not just rely on a change of diet?
According to Sang Whang, researcher and author of "Reverse Aging", the danger is that we might omit important foods:
"Since the waste products that we are trying to discharge are acidic, the right kind of water is alkaline water...My personal recommendation is to enjoy the foods that we like, but do not over-eat or exclude any food. Eat in moderation following the professional dieticians' "balanced diet" concept, and let alkaline water do the job of cleansing acidic wastes."
Correlation of Sleep Deprivation and Man-Made Accidents

Word Count:

The articles is about the dangers posed by sleeplessness.  Sleep deprivation not only causes physical and emotional disturbances, but can also result to poor judgment, lack of concentration, and reduced reflexes.  The slow down of a person's mental acuity and physical movement can cause minor mishaps, fatal accidents, and major disasters.

car accident, sleeping pill, over the counter sleeping pill, side effects of sleeping pill

Article Body:
How much impact does sleep deprivation make on a person's mind and body?  A little drowsiness at the office...a millisecond of mental shut-down as you drive down the highway?   The facts glaringly bear out the dangers of losing sleep.  Some of the worst industrial disasters recorded in history --- the Chernoby Nuclear Disaster and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill --- all happened because someone who was supposed to be wide awake and alert allegedly fell asleep on the job.

In 1986, a flawed nuclear reactor design led to a stem explosion and fire that released at least five percent of the radioactive reactor core.  The radioactive fumes flowed into the atmosphere and left a total of 54 fatalities, almost 20 years after the incident.  The radioactivity caused people to get sick and die painfully slow from the effects of exposure to the nuclear fumes.  While officially, the records show that it was a mechanical failure that caused the steam explosion, many attribute the tragedy to poor training, lack of safety measures, and the poor concetration of a sleepy worker at the nuclear plant.

Three years after Chernobyl, another major disaster occurred that has again put the lack of sleep as center of the blame.  In 1989, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez struck a reef and spilled approximately 11 million gallons of oil into the sea.  At the time of the accident, the captain of the ship was in his stateroom --- leaving a ship officer and a seaman on the control.  According to reports, the two men on the bridge were apparently tired and sleepy and, thus, momentarily lost their concentration while maneuvering the tanker.  Exxon, the company that owned the tanker, spent around $3 Billion to finance the oil clean-up operations and to settle damages incurred by fishing companies that operated in the site of the accident.

Sleep deprivation also causes other relatively smaller scale incidents, like a car accident, which is, by no means, less tragic. Sleeping while behind the wheel is the culprit for the 13 percent rise in highway road accidents in the United States.  According to studies made on road accidents, one in thirteen drivers regularly felt drowsy while driving a car on a busy highway.  It does not take much to be in a road mishap.  Even if a driver closes his eyes for a millisecond, that is enough for him to unintentionally swerve the vehicle to the opposite lane and cause a head-on collission. Based on records by the World Health Organization, at least 1.2 million people die each year on the road due to a car accident.

So, how can we prevent accidents due to sleep deprivation?  The answer is as simple as this: people should get enough sleep.  Studies show that the amount of sleep needed by an individual is influenced by genetics. While some people feel fine with just five hours of sleep a night, most doctors and health experts prescribe at least eight hours of sleep.  While the number of hours of sleep time somehow decreases with age, it is clear that lack of sleep makes a person lose concentration which could have disastrous consequences.

People who are under extreme stress or those who suffer from insomnia need additional help in getting sleep.  For many years, millions of people have turned to the sleeping pill to find quick relief from sleeping disorders like insomnia.  Over the counter sleeping pills are among the most bought pharmaceutical products today, especially in highly industrialized Western countries.  These sedatives help a person experience relaxation which eventually leads to sleep.  Still, users of the drug are strongly cautioned about the side effects of sleeping pill use which include slurred speech, slow reflexes, and poor judgment.

Accidents happen unexpectedly, without any warning.  Perhaps, there is close to nothing that we can do to totally prevent minor mishaps and large-scale tragedies from happening. Still, ensuring that we get enough sleep may be a good start.  Failing to get enough rest at night not only disrupts our body processes and reduces our mental capabilities, it can even lead to the fatal incidents that could possibly lead to  the sleep of death.

Cortisol --- The Stress Hormone

Word Count:

Experts claim that physical illness are among the negative effects of too much stress and anxiety.  During stressful situations, the body stimulates the release of cortisol through the adrenal glands to cortisol. Cortisol is a natural steroid hormone that science experts refer to as the “stress hormone. It is known as the“stress hormone” because large amounts of this substance are released whenever a person feels stressed out.

Article Body:
Stress affects health in many ways, unfortunately none of them affects well-being in a good way. Many health specialists claim, as normal human experience would confirm, that stress and depression can have negative effects on physical health. In the long run, persons under high stress can develop eating disorders and sleep disturbances.   These conditions could also possibly lead to decreased physical energy, chronic pain, and sexual dysfunction.

Physical illnesses are  almost always present whenever a person is under extremely stressful conditions.  Even the body's internal processes respond to external difficulties experienced by a person. During stressful situations, the adrenal glands inside the body release a substance called cortisol. Cortisol is a natural steroid hormone that science experts refer to as the “stress hormone.”  It is known as the“stress hormone” because large amounts of this substance are released whenever a person feels stressed out. It is an important hormone in the human body because it is involved in proper glucose metabolism, regulation of blood pressure, and control of immune system functions, and inflammatory response.

In general, cortisol is present in the body at elevated levels in the morning and lowest in the evening. Small increases of cortisol have some positive effects like quick bursts of energy, improved immunity, heightened memory function, and lower sensitivity to pain. In addition, moderate doses of cortisol helps maintain homeostasis in the body. Homeostasis is the property of living organisms that regulates its internal environment to maintain a stable and constant state in terms of body temperature, acidity, and nutrient and waste balance. Health experts stress that this process is critical for survival and good health. With minimal or no thought at all, people maintain and restore homeostasis all the time. For example, people drink if they are thirsty, wear a sweater when it is cold, or take a rest after an intense physical activity. All these actions contribute to ones state of homeostasis. Dilemmas occur when the body's cells fail to communicate properly, and cause breakdown in homeostasis. This disturbance can lead to poor health and later into serious health conditions.

Sustained and prolonged levels of cortisol, however, may lead to many harmful effects like high cholesterol, suppression of the immune system, and acceleration of the aging process. Prolonged stress may lead to imbalance of cortisol in the body which causes disturbance in the components of the digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, and other major systems of the body. Medical specialists conclude that such imbalance may lead to several illness like cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease. In addition to these harmful effects, high levels of cortisol may lead to weight gain.  When people become stressed, the adrenal glands produce more cortisol that release sugar in the blood which then leads to additional weight gain. Studies add that people who secrete higher levels of cortisol as a reaction to stress tend to eat more food that is high in carbohydrates. To keep cortisol levels under control, the body's relaxation response is activated during stressful situations. The following methods have been proven by many health experts to be very beneficial helping the mind and the body relax and, in the process, control the body's production of cortisol:

· Journaling or keeping a diary
· Self-hypnosis
· Exercise
· Yoga
· Listening to music
· Meditation
· Sex

Cortisol production varies from person to person.  People are biologically designed to react differently to different forms and intensities of stress. There are many kinds of medication out in the market that are designed to reduce high levels of cortisol in the body. However, it is important to understand that certain illnesses are caused by too much stress. Keeping our lives as stress-free as possible and by practicing stress management techniques, living life would not be so hard as it seems.

When either cosmetic or plastic surgery are mentioned to us, our thoughts run immediately to breast implants or liposuction, but there are many other procedures available that although they might not receive the same attention of their more obvious counterparts can have a huge impact upon both the appearance and the self confidence of a patient. One of these unsung heroes is cosmetic chin surgery, which can exert a profound effect that belies the ease with which it can be performed.
Cosmetic chin surgery is a relatively simple procedure that is usually performed in about an hour or so. Scarring is minimal, and though the patient might be limited to a liquid diet for the two or three days following surgery, recovery time is typically fast, and patients are back to their usual routines within a couple of days. Side effects, including the risk of infection or numbness in the area, are rare, making the benefits of cosmetic chin surgery far outweigh the risks.
And the benefits are striking. Those of us with ample chins have probably never noticed how they suitably frame our facial features, creating a sense of balance in our face. A smaller or receding chin can set this balance awry, placing a disproportionate emphasis on other features, such as the nose, particularly if this is already large - in fact, chin and nose surgeries are commonly performed in a complimentary fashion, in order to balance the patient's features, and release their true beauty.
Cosmetic chin surgery involves the simple insertion of an implant through an incision made either underneath the chin or in the mouth. The implant will be custom designed for each patient, insuring that the client achieves precisely the look that they and their surgeon have agreed will be most flattering to their features. The surgery can be performed under either local or general anaesthetic, and is usually done on an out patient basis - meaning that before the day is out, you will be at home again, waiting until your bandaging can be removed so that you can see the new you, in all your glory.

title:Cosmetic Dentistry And Can Put The Smile Back On Your Face

You see your boss and he compliments your efforts on the success of last week's presentation with a promotion. Your response? A half-smile. You see your crush down the corridors. She's smiling that come-hither smile. Your response? A sheepish grin.
Surely, you don't want to give those two VIP's a wrong impression, right? But what is really bothering you that you can't smile that widest smile you should be flashing them? It's those far-from immaculate white teeth your mouth is "stuck" with.
Have you ever thought about cosmetic dentistry? No? white teeth is not only for celebrities. Everybody deserves to smile that bright smile propped with white teeth. So, read on for more info on this long dream of yours - achieving a sunnier smile by teeth whitening.
Whiter teeth is not impossible, you only need the moolah and the drive to pursue this teeth whitening endeavor. Fortunately, there are three teeth whitening methods available for you to choose from. These three differ from each other in cost and effectiveness.
One way to accomplish teeth whitening is through the help of over the counter products that ensure a flashier smile. See, this is not so hard an activity. All you need is ask that trusty saleslady to give you those teeth whitening paraphernalia. This dental whitener kit consists of a mouthpiece, a bleaching agent and sometimes an applicator. This is a DIY method that could easily be done at the comforts of your home sweet home. This home teeth whitening is carried out through wearing the mouthpiece, filling it with the bleaching agent and wearing it overnight. Availing a fitted mouthpiece is often recommended since it produces better results. A formula that contains 15% to 16% of carbamide peroxide is said to be the safest and most effective concentration to achieve that sunny smile. But it is important to know that some teeth discolorations are more stubborn than other. So, results may really vary depending on the resistance of your teeth discoloration. This kind of teeth whitening method is the least expensive. Kits may be bought with a very low budget.
A recently presented procedure is laser teeth whitening. From being first developed by NASA scientists, it has become the favorite teeth whitening method of dentists. Why did it win the dentists' preference, you ask. Simply because it's lesser time-consuming, two hours will be enough for the treatment and no follow-up treatment is really that necessary. Dentists seek the help of a peroxide solution to breeze through this teeth whitening process. Then the whitening process will be accelerated with the use of laser. 93% is reported to be the satisfaction rate for this procedure. And this is more preferred by those who are not into the overnight-long wearing of the mouthpiece required by the home teeth whitening method. Its results even last the longest compared to other treatments. One major disadvantage of laser teeth whitening is its effect on one's pocket. A procedure like this could cost one to shell out about a months wages. What a hefty price, right?
Another resort for whiter teeth is through the professional teeth whitening method. This is a system that requires dentists to create a mold of your teeth. From this mold, a mouth guard is produced to custom-fit your mouth. You will wear this mouth guard for some hours a day in a period of two weeks. A stronger concentration of carbamide peroxide will be used as a filler on your mouth guard. The setback of this system is its risk of teeth and gum sensitivity. But it is relatively lesser expensive than laser teeth whitening.
So, there you have it. Have you finally singled out the cosmetic dentistry procedure that suits you. Make up your mind. Sooner or later, thanking your boss and sparking up a cheerful convo with your crush won't be that troublesome as it used to be. You'll be more confident with your whiter set of teeth.

Maybe you are ready to get rid of your old silver fillings.  Maybe you don’t like you discolored teeth. Or maybe your smile needs adjusting.
This new dentistry goes beyond just fixing teeth.  Its about helping people gain more self confidence by having a wonderful smile.  Your image matters and tells your customers and friends that you value your image and expect the best in return.  There are several different forms of cosmetic dentistry to give you that “winning smile”.  Crowns, veneers, bonding and bleaching are all effective methods to varying degrees and price.
Cosmetic crowns can cover old, leaking silver fillings.  They can also cover fractured and broken teeth.  If you have visible fillings when you smile, porcelain crowns can eliminate that metallic look.  Crowns are tooth colored to match your existing teeth.  They are carefully tinted to match existing teeth.  Cost can range from $550 to $800 per tooth.
Veneers are around $750 to $2,000 per tooth.  But it will reshape your teeth.  The dentist usually grinds down your teeth and adds a custom porcelain shell.  Most people get the six to ten teeth in their “smile zone” fixed.  Then you can have the others bleached.  But the bad news – they usually have to be replaced about every 10 years.
Bonding is similar, but uses a plastic resin instead of the porcelain.  Dentists have used these to replace chipped teeth.  Bonding is done by hand by the dentist and is much cheaper at $300 to $700 per tooth.  It can’t reshape your teeth like veneers, but it can whiten your teeth similar to bleaching.
Bleaching is good choice if you don’t need your teeth straightened or reshaped.  Peroxide bubbles out some of the stains in the tooth enamel.  Your dentist will make a tooth tray for about $200-$500 that allows you to wear and let the peroxide do its trick.  Usually you can get your teeth 5 shades whiter.
You may have heard of Zoom! or BriteSmile.  These are dentist-performed bleaching using special gels that are light activated.  This can get your teeth up to 10 shades whiter!  But this process can run from $400 to $1200.  But it’s fast and your done.
Before you go to any extremes, it may be beneficial to try the Crest Whitestrips Premium.  This may give you an idea of how much change you want before spending the big bucks at the dentist for a professional service.
Long ago, they used chlorine as a paste on people’s teeth.  Looked great, but it ate off all the enamel and subsequent tooth decay set in causing unbearable pain.  Thank goodness we have better options.  There are several methods to whiten your teeth.  These are some ideas on how to get your teeth, not only whiter, but also give you that wining smile you deserve.

Many people who have discolored teeth opt to use a “crown” as a remedy. Just as the name applies, this is a prosthetic device that covers the tooth. Sometimes a tooth may have a large filling and there is very little tooth left to support the filling. This would be an effective treatment for that situation. They are often used in conjunction with the dental implants we discussed above. A crown makes your tooth stronger as well as prettier!
Bonding is a cosmetic treatment for teeth that involves placing tooth colored bonding material directly to the surface of the tooth using resin. First the tooth is prepared by slightly etching the enamel. This is done in order to give the bonding material “mechanical retention” allowing the bonding material to adhere to the tooth properly. Then the bonding material is applied, shaped and sculpted. A ultraviolet “laser” light is used to harden the resin material. When the process is complete the tooth is polished to a high shine.
Bonding is also used now for “fillings.” In fact, it is favored over the old silver (amalgam) fillings because the bonding resin can be matched to the rest of your tooth color. The downside to bonding, is the expense. Bonding is more expensive to silver. The bonding material is also porous making it a poor choice for smokers as it will yellow.
This is considered a permanent procedure because of removing small amounts of the natural tooth enamel.
Enamel shaping.
This process is often done in conjunction with bonding. The enamel is sometimes removed or reshaped. Shaping allows the dentist to sculpt chipped, cracked or broken teeth using bonding material as discussed above. In both procedures the catalyst is usually done with a laser light which insures that the material is securely merged with the natural tooth material.

Many people suffering from hair loss prefer not to use the strong drugs and medications that currently form the best available treatment options. They may have tried a range of treatments but found they did not work or perhaps suffered unpleasant side effects. What options are left for such people, especially if they do not wish to consider surgery?
There are a number of solutions available but the final decision will be strongly influenced by the amount of thinning that needs to be covered.
1. Creative styling - this is perhaps the easiest option but its success depends on how far your hair loss has progressed. Slight balding can easily be camouflaged by careful grooming but attempts at covering large bald patches can end up looking ridiculous. One option for men with extensive thinning is to shave the head completely but this is not for everyone.
2. Hair cosmetics - this can include anything from hair thickening / volumizing products to dyes and fibers that blend with existing hair. Once again, these solutions really only work if the area of scalp to be covered is minimal.
3. Head coverings - seen by many as a last resort, wigs and hairpieces offer a further option. Once an object of derision, hairpieces have improved beyond recognition in recent years, although the price you are prepared to pay will determine the realism of the final result. Wigs come in all shapes and sizes and can be made from real or synthetic hair, but be warned the best ones are very expensive.

Cosmetic Surgery UK: Do Not be Fooled by Marketing Gimmicks

c) Both in a package along with other discount options.

Tick your choice. Is it (c)?

Do you really believe on the marketing gimmicks that plastic surgeries are as easy and acceptable as going to a holiday? Can you just have it done by any person and from anywhere? Sorry, a logical brain can not subscribe to this view.

However this is not the only marketing gimmick we have seen so far. Last year around 65000 operations had taken place in UK. And one can easily make out the reason why such advertisements are seen round the corner.

Not only the film actors and actresses or pop stars, but general people, who can afford to have it, are also taking cosmetic surgery to boost up their confidence and self esteem. It is all about getting everything right and only a perfectionist knows, what it does mean.

One may find a lot of such advertisements in the back covers of a number of Woman’s Magazines. People are advertising even for plastic or cosmetic surgeries for less in a lot of substandard hospitals away from United Kingdom. Some even do not care about GP’s reference.

One cannot help supporting the views of General Medical Council that all patients should be referred by his or her general physician or some other consultant before taking a plastic surgery for their own good.

In many of such cases they hardly even think about the issue regarding ‘aftercare’. Whatever let the surgery be, tummy tuck or Breast enlargement, aftercare is as much important as the operation itself had been.

Many research studies have shown that where aftercare is poor, the rate and extent of complications increases. Having a weight loss surgery without an extended aftercare programme is never a safe option.

The operating surgeon ideally needs to keep in touch with the general physician of the patient for a long time after the surgery for safety reasons.

To add to this, one must remember that, any doctor may call himself or herself a plastic surgeon even without any specific surgical training. There are no official restrictions to it if the doctors do not feel any moral obligations to it.

This is reason enough for you to be careful enough while selecting a plastic or cosmetic surgeon.

However, if financial assistance is needed, there are a lot of cosmetic surgery and treatment providers who may help you in getting it easily.

Never settle for gimmicks; it never pays in the long run.

With the proliferation of TV shows and dramas about cosmetic surgery, you could be forgiven for thinking that getting a procedure done was no more difficult than going to the dentist.
And what is more, that all cosmetic surgeons were handsome and rich and cared for their patients.
Cosmetic surgery is no different than any other profession, there are good surgeons, who keep up to date with medical trends, who invest thousands every year honing their skills and knowledge and who deeply care for both their profession and their patients.
Then there are those surgeons who see cosmetic surgery as just another way to earn money, they may attend a course or two and maybe a convention once a year, purely for networking purposes. They see the patient as just another dollar earned. These doctors would be unprofessional no matter what specialty they chose.
The difficulty lies in how do we know which is which? When we are sat in the reception or the doctors office, diplomas on display and palms in the corner, how do we know?
Well, there are a couple of things that you can do and ask, that, speaking from experience, allows you to sort out the wheat from the chaff.
1.How do the reception staff treat you? Are they welcoming or aloof?
2.Is the work area organised? A professional practice will look professional.
3.Are the staff aware of your particular needs? Are they empathetic or 'cold'
On to your interview
1.Is the consultant open and willing to discuss his education and experience? Don't just trust the diplomas on the walls. What associations do they belong to?, get their addresses and phone numbers, talk to them and find out what membership entails.
2.Do not be intimidated. Remember, it is your body you are talking about. You have every right to ask any question you think is neccessary to enable you to make a decision to proceed or not.
3.Is the consultant happy to refer you to other previous patients? If they claim 'confidentiality', explain that you will be discussing personal issues, not professional and that they are running a 'business' and should be more than happy to provide references.
4.Does the consultant behave in a professional and confident manner? Beware of statements such as 'It looks like it should be easy enough' or 'This is very simple to do'. Surgery is always rife with danger, no matter how 'small' the operation. A professional knows this and never takes any procedure for granted.
5.Does he conduct a thorough check on your health and medical history and explain why.
6.Does he explain what post surgery will entail? How you will feel, how you will look, whether there will be pain, how long it may take to fully recover and what other follow-up will be needed, if any.
All these things go towards giving you an overall impression of whether this is the right surgeon for you.
The decision to go ahead or not is yours, should you feel pressured, even slightly, unless it is a health risk to you, move on to the next candidate.
Also, remember to trust your intuition. It is a powerful ally and will not let you down. You will know when you have made the right decision, your body and your mind will tell you.
title:Cosmetic Surgery – Vanity or Healthy Choice?
author:Rex Ryan
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

Cosmetic and plastic surgery has long been associated with vanity, but mounting evidence suggests that in many cases cosmetic surgery can offer substantial health benefits.  Nose jobs can offer real health benefits in addition to improving the symmetry of the face.  Face lifts have been shown to increase life expectancy.  And eyelid surgery can create significant vision benefits for some people.  All of these examples show the lines between aesthetics and real health benefits can blur when examining plastic surgery procedures.
Rhinoplasty, or nose jobs have health benefits beyond the aesthetic appeals of the procedure.  In many cases, rhinoplasty can substantially improve breathing difficulties.  In cases where people have broken their nose, the cartilage can become constricted, creating breathing problems.  Rhinoplasty can alleviate this, along with snoring problems associated with constricted nasal passages.  Many people who have persistent sinus problems have remedied the issue with rhinoplasty.
Face lifts have long been considered a purely cosmetic procedure for people to fight the effects of aging.  However, evidence shows that face lifts actually can have health benefits.  A study performed at the Mayo clinic reviewed data from 250 women who had undergone face lifts in the ‘70s.  The data showed that on average, women who received face lifts outlived their counterparts in the general population by 10 years.  The self esteem factors attributed to looking and feeling younger as a result of the face lift are cited as possible reasons why these patients lived longer.
Eyelid surgery known as blepharoplasty is a procedure to remove fat--usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids.  While the procedure does have cosmetic benefits, it can also provide real health benefits to those who have vision problems caused by excess skin around the eyelids.
Gastric Bypass surgery, while not often considered “cosmetic surgery” can be viewed as a surgery to improve appearances.  Like liposuction, it reduces an individual’s weight through surgical means.  However, the health benefits of losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight are well documented and accepted.  Losing weight is a perfect example of how health benefits and aesthetic benefits can both result from the same surgical procedures.
Most who have significant dental problems will view fixing those problems as a mandatory concern.  Braces were once considered strange, but now are commonplace.  People who lose teeth in accidents don’t think twice about the vanity associated with replacing those teeth.  Indeed, they argue that replacing broken or lost teeth is necessary for healthy eating function, as well as restoring appearance.  Improving speech through dentistry has been long accepted for its benefits, and without the taboos associated with many cosmetic surgery procedures.
Cosmetic surgery is not just for vain people who want to improve their aesthetic appeal.  In many cases, the real benefits of cosmetic surgery make the aesthetic improvements just an added bonus when compared to the health benefits the procedures can provide.   As cosmetic surgery becomes more common, the lines between purely cosmetic and self esteem benefits and real measurable health benefits will increasingly blur.  As the health benefits of cosmetic surgery become more apparent and documented, the acceptance of the procedures by the public at large will continue to climb.

I'm sure you can see why in most countries, many years of training are required in university in order to become an actual dentist. A dentist is what we call a professional practitioner of dentistry. This "Dentist" has normally studied between 4-8 years at university and will normally also have alot of practical experience with working on actual patients, often times accompianed by a more experienced dentist.

There is nine different specialties that are branched out from dentistry which all require initial education after the initial dental school. These are:

Dental Public Health - Which is the study of dental epidemiology and social health policies
Endodontics  - Which is root canal therapy
Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology - Which is the study, diagnosis, and often the treatment of oral and maxillofacial related diseases
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology - Which is the study and radiologic interpretation of oral and maxillofacial diseases
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - Which is the extractions and facial surgery
Orthodontics - Which is straightening of teeth
Pedodontics - Which is pediatric dentistry for children
Periodontics - Which is treatment of gum disease
Prosthodontics - Which is the replacement of missing facial anatomy by prostheses such as dentures, bridges and implants

Often times visiting the Dentis is an un-nerving situation. Rest assured that if you are going to a qualified dentist, they have all of the training that is required to perform what it is that you require. If you are still un-easy or having a problem choosing a dentist in your area, you might want to talk those around you and find out who has had good and bad experiences and where.

title:Costume Contact Lenses – Be Noticed in the Crowd!
author:Tanya Turner
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

Costume contacts have always been a favorite tool of movie costume designers. What makes a werewolf appear like a real monster and not just an actor in a costume? The eyes, of course! The eyes make the entire image seem real and very believable.
But the days when theatrical lenses were available only to movie stars are long gone. Now everybody can get a pair of costume contacts that makes their eyes appear bright and inhuman. The only limit is your imagination.
Many people think of theatrical contact lenses only at Halloween time. But there is no reason why you can’t wear them just for going out to the club. If your eyes look like you just came back from Dune, you can be sure that your appearance won’t go unnoticed.
What are my choices?
There are many costume lenses on the market; the most popular brands are Crazy Lenses, by Cooper Vision, and Wild Eyes, by CibaVision. Both Crazy Lenses and WildEyes offer bright, exciting designs. Their lenses are also comfortable and affordable.
If you type “costume contact lenses” into a Google or Yahoo search, many different collections will show up. Some of them offer a great look for a reasonable price. However, you should always bear in mind that most paints are toxic; so some of the lenses on offer might seem beautiful, but the could also irritate your eyes. It is always best to go with costume contacts produced by major contact lens manufacturers.
And for a particularly magnificent effect, you can get scleral contacts. Unlike ordinary color contact lenses, sclerals cover not only the colored part of your eye, but the entire visible portion of your eye. Sclerals create a knock-out effect. The only draw back with scleral contacts is that they are awfully expensive.
You can also get custom-made costume lenses. This way, you can be sure that nobody would have eyes like yours, and you can have any design imaginable.
You can see pictures and reviews of different costume contact lens collections at
Do I need a prescription for costume contact lenses?
Most brand name costume contacts come in Plano (no vision correction) as well as with corrective powers. And whether or not you need visual correction, you should ask your eye doctor to fit costume lenses for you. Even if you have perfect vision, it is best to see an optometrist first.
Can I see while wearing theatrical contacts?
Yes, you can. Even though the lens is completely opaque, its center is clear so you can see. The only exceptions are white-out contacts, which create the effect of blind eyes. In this case, the entire lens is fully opaque so, unless you want to find out how it is to be blind, you should wear a white-out contact lens in one eye only.
Are costume contacts safe?
There are many FDA warnings about the dangers of costume lenses, although the lenses themselves are usually not to blame. Unfortunately, some people wear their costume contacts for several days straight, or put them in without washing their hands first, or swap the lenses with their friends, and then blame the theatrical contacts when they get an eye infection.
The truth is that if you get reputable brand name costume lenses and take proper care of them, costume contacts are as safe as any other type of contact lens.
Here are 5 simple rules, to keep costume contact lenses safe:

Don’t wear your costume contacts for longer than a few hours
Don’t swap them with other people
Order your lenses from your doctor’s office or a reputable online retailer. Contacts sold in costume shops or flea markets might be of questionable quality.
Have an optometrist fit you with theatrical contacts
Clean your costume lenses properly

How do I take care of my costume lenses?
Novelty contact lenses don’t require any special care; you simply treat them the same way as you would treat any contact lenses.
All you need is a multi-purpose solution and a contact lens case, which you can get in any chemist shop. Rinse your lenses in the solution before inserting them in your eyes, and don’t forget to wash your hands before handling the lenses.
When you’re not using your costume lenses, keep them in the solution, in their case. It is recommended that you change the solution at least once a week, if you don’t use them for long periods of time. But who would bother? If you have to wear contacts that have spent a month or so in their case, just give them a double rinse in fresh solution.
title:Could Drinking Water Cure Your Ailments?
author:Royane Real
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

Yesterday I was supposed to have lunch with my friend Margaret, but she told me in the morning that she didn’t want to walk to the restaurant where we were supposed to meet because she had painful arthritis in her foot.
I asked her, “Do you want to hear what helped my arthritis go away?” and of course she did.
Then I told her about a strange little book I had read a few years titled “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water” by F. Batmanghelidj, M.D.  The theory that Dr. Batmanghelidj proposes is that almost all bodily ailments, no matter where and how they manifest in the body, are usually caused by our body cells being chronically dehydrated, and that the cure for almost all illness is simply to get our cells properly hydrated again.
At the time I read this book, I had arthritis in my fingers so bad that I could not hold a cup in my hands, or turn a door knob.  I often had very little energy.
Within a few weeks of trying Dr. Batmanghelidj’s recommendations, my arthritis went away.  Now whenever I get a few twinges, I simply step up my water intake, and the pain disappears in a couple of days.  I have more energy now than I had twenty years ago, and I haven’t really changed anything except my water intake.
Dr. Batmanghelidj had been a medical doctor living in Iran when he was arrested and thrown into jail on trumped up political charges.  He was scheduled to be executed.
One night a prisoner in the same jail was brought to him for treatment.  This prisoner was suffering terribly from an acute ulcer, and Dr. Batmanghelidj had nothing to give the man for his pain except water.  To his great surprise, after a few glasses of water, the pain went away.
Over the course of treating other prisoners with nothing but glasses of water, Dr. Batmanghelidj found that he was able to help many serious conditions using water as therapy.  When he was eventually released from prison, he conducted many experiments and found many conditions improved with this treatment.
He came to the conclusion that many physical ailments are simply a result of dehydration.
Among the many ailments that Dr. Batmanghelidj believes are really a result of the body being dehydrated are such varied conditions as allergies, asthma, lupus, arthritis, back pain, ulcers, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
The book is somewhat hard to read because Dr. Batmanghelidj is not very skilled in writing in English, and he uses a lot of medical terminology, so it can be difficult for a lay person to understand some of it.
According to Dr. Batmanghelidj, only water counts as a hydrating beverage.  Other drinks such as juices, milk, coffee, and soft drinks do not have this miraculous ability to reverse disease.
Dr. Batmanghelidj has developed a formula to figure out how much water a person should be drinking each day.  According to him, a person should drink one fluid ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight.
Here is a quick summary of his proposed schedule:
About two glasses of water taken upon waking.
Then, one to two glasses of water taken half an hour before meals.
A glass of water two and a half hours after a meal.
Other glasses of water as needed.
Dr. Batmanghelidj also recommends adding a pinch of unrefined sea salt to each glass of water to help the body cells absorb the liquid.
Of course, not all people agree with Dr. Batmanghelidj’s recommendations, especially not all other medical doctors.  Some people think he is a medical quack, while others think his theory about dehydration being the cause of many ailments is not only simple, but correct.
It is very fascinating to read the letters to Dr. Batmanghelidj from people who say that following his regimen helped cure them of all sorts of longstanding medical problems.
The book “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water” is available at various on-line sellers, as well as in some bookstores.
If you wish to try Dr. Batmanghelidj’s recommendations, please keep in mind that he says that it takes months for the body’s cells to become dehydrated to the point of illness, and it can take months for the cells to become properly hydrated again.

Perhaps they could circulate information about cheap generic Viagra or incredibly inexpensive Generic Cialis. They might then have luck with trapping a criminal who desired a way to improve his sexual performance.
Back in 1985, well before the appearance on drug store shelves of both Viagra and Cialis, the FBI sought a murderer, one who loved to jog and to lift weights. While living in California, that jogger and weightlifter had performed a very callous act. He had killed his son and two daughters.
In an effort to escape from the long arm of the law, that uncaring father traveled across the United States. Eventually, he found himself in a Pennsylvania county, York County.
Now the criminal’s movements did take him far from California, but they moved him into a County that was the home of Bob Hoffman, the founder of the York Barbell Company.
Bob Hoffman had earned the title “Father of World Weightlifting.” Hoffman had been given the title because he had directed his efforts towards the promotion of physical fitness. Between 1948 and 1964, Hoffman had been the coach of the U.S. weightlifting team.
After leaving that position, Hoffman put much of his energy into the affairs of York Barbell Company. Hoffman enjoyed business success, and he used some of his profits to support a cause that was dear to him. He offered financial support to the promotion of weightlifting and bodybuilding. In addition, he advocated for the benefits of nutritional supplements.
Recognized and respected as a philanthropist, Bob Hoffman received affirmations from many in the community. When Hoffman died, in 1985, the papers carried a long article about his life and his business dealings. That article mentioned the existence of the Hoffman Health Store.
Now the murderer from California happened to see the article about Hoffman’s passing. He made note of the fact that the Hoffman Health Store had been mentioned in that article. The murderer wanted to visit that store.
The murderer’s desire to become even healthier landed him in prison. When he got into a taxi and asked to go to the Hoffman Health Store, his behavior aroused the suspicions of the taxi driver. Taxi drivers across the U.S. had been given information about the FBI’s most wanted. The murderer stepped into a cab with a driver who linked the picture he had seen to the face then in his taxi.
The taxi driver contacted the FBI. The FBI learned that the murderer, Robert Henry Nicklaus, had chosen to get a room at the local YMCA. The agents waited quietly near that room. They caught Nicklaus when he returned from a shopping trip with a bag of groceries.
Maybe our present-day FBI agents could nab a criminal on the “Most Wanted” list as he returned to his residence, following a trip to the drug store. That criminal might return to his residence with a bottle of generic Viagra.

Ask Rusty
Arthritis Questions answered by Rusty Ford Editor of
Could this be arthritis in my hands
Hi Rusty. A few days ago, I slightly injured a finger on my hand. Now my hand is swelling with severe joint pain in the fingers. At first I thought this was a possible sprain in that region, but now my other hand is showing the same swelling of the fingers and pain of the joints. Should I go check this out right away? It doesn't seem to be getting worse today, but the pain and swelling are persistent. Could this be a sudden arthritis attack? I'm 38 years old and in good health (I just had a check-up at the doctor last week and the blood work came back okay).
Your advice is greatly appreciated.
Ouch, a little sprain is not supposed to do that. Unfortunately some times it does. I am sorry to hear about this. It is not unusual for arthritis to begin in an effected joint. It is not the norm for it to set in so quickly. There are different kinds of arthritis that can effect the hands and feet that can cause swelling. It is possible that arthritis was already beginning but not showing symptoms yet but this triggered a symptomatic response.
I am concerned that the pain is bilateral, effecting both sides. I doubt it is anything extremely serious but it would be good to see your doctor. The sooner the better. If nothing else, your doctor will be able to treat the pain and swelling. But if it is arthritis or one of the other conditions that can cause this type of swelling in the fingers the earlier the diagnosis the better.
I wish you good health.

The Dangers About Your Personal Care Products That May Shock You Or Harm You

I would like to ask you these shocking questions:
Could the underarm deodorant you're using be linked to Alzheimer's disease and breast cancer?
It could if it has aluminum in it. Check the the back of the label.
Could the mouthwash you use be linked to oral/throat cancer?
It could if it has alcohol in it. Again, check the back of the label.
Could you be using engine degreaser or garage floor cleaner to wash your hair and brush your teeth?
Could you be rubbing antifreeze and/or break fluid all over you and your children without even knowing it? If you think that people are aware of these statistics, they are not, and that can be terribly dangerous!

What You Don't Know Can Hurt You
Take a look at the ingredients on the back of those lotions, moisturizers, hair conditioners, wrinkle creams, or baby wipes. Just about everybody has at least one of these five products in their homes. If you check the back of the label of those products just mentioned, most likely you will find an ingredient called Propylene Glycol. Did you know that you can find this same ingredient in the back of a container of prestone antifreeze. That ingredient has been proven to cause kidney and liver damage once it's absorbed into the bloodstream.
Next, take a look in the back of a label of a bottle of shampoo, or a tube of toothpaste. Most likely, you will find something called Sodium Lauryl or Laureth Sulfate (SLS or SLES) which are found in engine degreasers and garage floor cleaners. Once these lethal ingredients are absorbed into the bloodstream, studies have shown that they can cause abnormal development of children eyes, cataracts, and even hair loss! That's something I never knew and really surprised me!
This Information Was Not Meant To Scare You, But To Inform You
This information wasn't given to you to scare you, but to help you make a wise decision about your health and your families as well when it comes to personal care products. Scientists say that long term exposure to ingredients such as Sodium Lauryl or Laureth Sulfate (SLS or SLES) could start to build up on your liver, kidneys, and many other vital organs and tissues, which could eventually lead to cancer. The government knew that these ingredients were being added to these personal care products and didn't do anything about it. That was definitely shocking to me! To learn more about the harmful ingredients that go into personal care products, please visit: Thank you very much for taking the time to read this article.

title:Could Unresolved Emotional Issues Be The Reason Your Dieting Attempts Always Fail?
author:Wayne Ennis
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:12

Have you tried to loose weight and failed?
Do you find it impossible to stick to a diet plan?
What if I told you that a recent exciting medical discovery has found the reason some people are overweight is due to unresolved emotional issues?
If we are being honest most people are overweight because they eat too much and do not do enough exercise.  It is only for less than 1% of the population that their weight problem is due to a thyroid or glandular problem. For the other 99% of the population their weight problems are simply down to overeating and a lack of exercise.
However it is too simplistic and easy to just tell somebody they are overweight because they eat too much.  If people are fat because they overeat then should we not be looking for the reasons as to why people overeat?  I make's perfect sense that if we fix the reasons that cause people to overeat then they would be able to loose weight more easily.
Does any of the following apply to you?
- I eat to comfort myself.
- I sometimes even when I am not hungry.
- I eat when I am depressed or lonely.
- Eating makes me feel better.
- I eat when I am stressed.
- I sometimes reward myself by eating.
- After an argument with my partner I eat to console myself.
- I sometimes eat to punish myself.
- When the children play up I reach for the snacks.
- When I am under stress I crave sweet things
The above are just a few examples of emotional or comfort eating.   Unless you resolve these issues then you will struggle to achieve your ideal weight and you will never be able stay slim.   Dieting may work for a short while but as soon as your emotional issues re-appear you are going to be back to comfort eating.   Your weight loss or gain will be decided by what is happening in your life emotionally.
The problem most people have is that they do not realise that this emotional eating is going on.  They don't realise that every time they feel stressed they reach for some chocolate or every time they fight with their spouse they reach for the biscuit cupboard afterwards.
Emotional eating affects men, woman and children.  Some people do realise that they comfort eat but they don't know how they can deal with it effectively.
So how do we deal with our emotional eating?  Naturally we could try good old willpower but for most people this will be too hard.   We could also try therapy but that could take months or years to resolve your issues. So what is the answer?
There is a new treatment available that helps in dealing with your emotional issues.  This treatment is known as Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT for short.  EFT has its basis in psychology and Chinese acupuncture.  However instead of using needles you simply tap on certain designated meridian points on your upper body.  Whilst you are doing the tapping you tune in/think about the problems you have.    You simply tap your problems away. I know for a lot of people the idea of tapping your problems away will seem a ridiculous concept but the results back up the claims.   EFT has helped thousands of people loose weight.  EFT makes weight loss easy.
EFT is also perfect for addictions.  Again you simply tap your addictions away.  So if you are addicted to chocolate or cream cakes use EFT and tap your addiction away.
Naturally EFT will not make you loose weight overnight.  You did not become overweight overnight.  It was gradual process due to your overeating.  So when you try to loose weight you have to be patient.  It can be very dangerous if you loose the weight too quickly.
One of the great things about EFT is that sessions can be done over the phone or Internet.  Your EFT specialist will tell you where to tap and what to say.   Being able to do EFT sessions over the telephone and Internet means it is perfect for seriously overweight people who have mobility difficulties or people with agoraphobia.
I know for some for you reading this article all of this must be a little bit hard to take in but what if I told that not only is EFT perfect for weight loss it is perfect for nearly every emotional and physical issue you can name?  EFT often works where all else has failed and often works where conventional medicine has no answers.  It has been known to work for all sorts of issues such as anorexia, bulimia, self harming, depression, phobias, allergies, anger, panic attacks, stopping smoking, asthma, shingles, OCD, trauma, high blood pressure and so much more.
So if you are struggling to loose weight then what emotional issues do you have?

Article Body:

While preparing a lecture in biochemistry and virology for his graduate students at the University of Alberta in the early 1980s, Dr. Lorne Tyrrell ran across a study just published in the medical journal, Cell. The research by William Mason and Jesse Summers, entitled “Replication of Hepatitis B,” discussed their study of the hepatitis B virus in infected duck liver.

After studying their duck model theory, Tyrrell speculated if the hepatitis B virus (HBV) might be susceptible to antiviral agents, and consulted with a colleague, who specialized in nucleoside chemistry. Both medical professors became excited about the possibility of inhibiting the HBV virus with nucleoside analogues. Thus began the infectious disease specialist’s first leg of a journey, which led to the use of lamivudine as a therapy for chronic HBV infections.

More than 350 million people across the world, especially in Asia, now had new hope, some for their lifelong infections contracted vertically at birth from their mothers. In 2003, the Center for Disease Control estimated 73,000 Americans were infected with HBV, and about 5,000 die each year from sickness caused by HBV. It is reportedly 100 times more contagious than the AIDS virus. Many in North America, who had been infected with the virus from sexual transmission or intravenous drug use, were offered a potentially life-saving therapy.

Licensed in 1998, lamivudine is now used in 120 countries as a standard therapy for chronic HBV carriers. The compound is also used in combination with other drugs, such as protease inhibitors, for HIV therapy. Development rights were licensed to Glaxo Wellcome in 1990, which is now sold under the brand name Epivir®. For his pioneering efforts in developing the antiviral agent, Dr. Tyrrell was awarded the gold medal by the Canadian Liver Foundation and the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver in 2000. In 2005, he won the prestigious EnCana Principal Award for his development of the first effective oral medication for Hepatitis B.

Despite the awards and recognition, questions remained for Dr. Tyrrell about the shortcomings of lamivudine. He was troubled that some viruses would develop resistance to the compound. “I was disappointed the sustained viral response was not complete,” Tyrrell told us. In April 2003, the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy published a study in Japan showing, “long-term (lamivudine) therapy is associated with increased emergence of lamivudine-resistant strains of HBV.” Researchers concluded in this study, “The therapeutic challenge to effectively treat chronic HBV infection continues.”

Having screened lamivudine for use in Hepatitis B at Glaxo’s research lab at the University of Alberta, Dr. Tyrrell was able to observe the immune response of various HBV patients. “What really got me interested in doing more work in this area was that we noticed patients, who have an immune response to the virus and take lamivudine, will have a better sustained response rate,” Tyrrell explained. “A patient with elevated liver transaminases taking lamivudine had a higher probability of a sustained viral response,” Tyrrell said with excitement in his voice. “In a patient with normal liver enzymes, who gets lamivudine, the virus will go down, but as soon as you stop the therapy, the virus comes right back up.” He told us the sustained viral response is only about two to three percent. Only about 30 percent remain free of the virus, about one year after patients have stopped taking lamivudine.

“How do you break tolerance?” Tyrrell asked himself, hoping to develop a way to stimulate an immune response. All of the patients, he had observed, seemed to be tolerant of the hepatitis B virus. He pondered the dilemma, “Was there some way to break tolerance to hepatitis B by stimulating the immune response?” Tyrrell studied what others were attempting and wasn’t satisfied with the approaches others were taking to stimulate immune response. His ViRexx Medical research team brainstormed about different ways to target the antigen into the dendritic cells.

“That’s where we came in with the Chimigen™ technology,” Tyrrell said. “The dendritic cells have receptors on their surface that will bind the Fc portion of an antibody.” He pointed out a key feature of the Chimigen™ platform, “We used the Fc portion of a murine (mouse) antibody to hook onto our hepatitis B antigens. This would direct the viral antigens into dendritic cells in vivo.” Because the dendritic cells are the sentries of the immune system, they guard what comes in. Recognizing a ‘foreign situation’ in the murine antibody, it treats the whole molecule including the virus antigen as foreign.

Dr. Rajan George, ViRexx Medical’s vice president of research and development, told us, “The dendritic cells chop up this protein into small pieces called peptides, also known as epitopes. The dendritic cells have a system where they put the T-cell epitope on another protein, MHC Class I, and bring it to the surface of the dendritic cell. They are presented as a complex on the surface of the dendritic cell to attract the T-cells.” When the T-cells arrive to inspect the foreign entity, the cytotoxic T-cells are activated. Then, they begin attacking and killing the virus-infected cells.

Research at Tokyo’s Cancer Institute Hospital, published in 1987 in Nippon Sanka Fujinka Gakkai Zasshi, suggested a feasibility of linked recognition of a virus antigen as a helper in tumor immunity with a target antigen. In the case of ViRexx Medical, Tyrrell’s team has created a new molecule, called “chimigen.” The term is shorthand for a chimeric antigen, meaning it is an antigen created from two different sources, part virus and part murine monoclonal antibody.

Dr. Tyrrell’s work at ViRexx Medical with Dr. George suggested the linked-recognition theory might be the key to breaking tolerance. Dr. George emphasized, “The new ‘chimigen’ stimulates an immune response to the antigen as well as the viral antigen. This is very important because the virus antigen was previously being ignored.” That brings us back to why lamivudine had limited success. The immune systems of some HBV carriers failed to recognize the viral infection as a threat to the body. Tyrell’s ViRexx Medical research team hopes the body’s immune system sees the threat, thus stimulating the immune system, and breaking tolerance. It appears Dr. Tyrell may soon find out whether or not the questions he asked will bring the answers he hoped for.

Could You Be A Candidate For LASIK Eye Surgery?

Word Count:

LASIK eye surgery is not for everyone. Read on to see whether you are a potential candidate for LASIK surgery

lasik, laser eye surgery, eye surgery, lasek, eye, vision

Article Body:
Does wearing spectacles or contact lenses seem cumbersome to you? Are you considering LASIK eye surgery – one of the most prevalent and successful refractive surgery techniques? I suggest you hold your horses and rather request the valuable assistance of an expert surgeon, since LASIK eye surgery is not for everyone. Read on to see whether you are a potential candidate for LASIK surgery.

An important aspect to bear in mind while considering LASIK surgery is the patient’s age. Since the vision typically experiences a continuous change until the age of 18, you must be at least 18 years old (21 for some laser ablations) to undergo LASIK. Furthermore, if you are myopic, you should defer LASIK awaiting your refraction to stabilize, since myopia may continue to increase until a patient’s mid to late 20s.

Pregnant or nursing mothers are advised against undergoing LASIK, though they might go for LASIK at a later stage in life. Also, you must not be taking certain prescription drugs, such as oral prednisone or Accutane. To be a potential LASIK candidate, your eyes must be healthy with a stabilized refraction. Moreover, LASIK is typically not recommended for patients with herpes infections of the eye, diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, glaucoma, or cataracts.

LASIK is not a panacea for all vision anomalies. You must have realistic expectations while you consider LASIK eye surgery. Consult your surgeon to check out if you are a potential candidate for monovision. LASIK can be used to impart monovision, that is, one eye corrected for near vision and the other for distant vision. The crucial aspect is to adjust to this particular type of vision correction. If you can do the same, your dependency on eyeglasses or contact lenses may be eliminated.

It is imperative that you discern whether you are a potential candidate for LASIK surgery or not. You must weigh the pros and cons before undergoing surgery. If you are happy wearing contact lenses or eyeglasses in order to compensate for the refractive error, and you certainly don’t believe that wearing eyeglasses cramps your style, then you could very well forego LASIK surgery. After all, LASIK is a surgical procedure and hence it’s bound to have associated risks and complications.

title:Coumadin Users Can Avoid Unnecessary Complications By Wearing Identification
author:Terry McDermott

The police arrive at the accident scene promptly. A driver has run his automobile into a guardrail while exiting a highway. The driver does not seem to be injured but is somewhat incoherent and is slipping in and out of consciousness. Did he strike his head? Is he inebriated? Is he on drugs? A quick review of the driver’s attire reveals a medical alert bracelet that identifies him as a Coumadin user. This is crucial information for those responding to the incident.
Coumadin (the brand name for Warfarin) is a medication that has offered protection from strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary embolisms other conditions resulting from blood clots. Coumadin is an anti-coagulant, or blood thinner, that helps to prevent the formation of blood clots. Those with certain heart conditions or who are subject to irregular blood clotting can benefit significantly from Coumadin. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Coumadin is a medication that must be carefully monitored to insure the correct balance in the user’s system to avoid serious complications.
Coumadin dosage is a very precise science and is determined by the specific condition being treated, certain characteristics of the person with the condition and the rate of clotting as determined by regular testing. In order to achieve the proper levels of Coumadin it may be necessary to take different doses each day. This requires that the user be very aware of the schedule and keep good records of dosage requirements and testing schedules.
Warfarin (generic Coumadin) was actually used as rat poison. Large doses of the compound caused rodents to hemorrhage internally and die. While the doses for humans are relatively miniscule, the dangers of excess bleeding are still a concern. The delicate balance of Coumadin in the system is the reason that many users will wear some form of medical alert identification. In the event of an emergency or an accident, attendants can readily identify a Coumadin user and attempt to discern whether to avoid certain other medications that may interact adversely with Coumadin. Emergency personnel can also determine if Coumadin may be the culprit.
There are many medical conditions and medications that can cause a situation or a reaction whereby a person cannot communicate. Conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, food allergies and the use of medications like Coumadin can be easily and readily identified by wearing medical alert jewelry with the proper information engraved or stored. A small problem can become a large problem if someone takes the wrong course of action, or no action, based on a lack of information. A small, attractive, fashionable piece of jewelry can help you look sharp…and save your life.

Counselling: Salvaging Your Happily-Ever-After

Word Count:

This article discusses about marriage.   It has four stages, namely: the romance or honeymoon stage; the reality stage;the accommodation stage; and the transformation or success stage.  During the honeymoon stage, couples are still excited about the transition from being just a regular couple to a married couple.  During the reality stage, they experience difficulties as differences in dealing with situations emerge.During the accommodation stage, the couple starts understanding each other and starts working on their differences.  On the success stage, they finally get to enjoy the rewards of the hard work they put into making the marriage work.  Counselling helps those who have a lot of difficulty coping with the reality stage. But counselling will not work if the will to work the relationship out doesn’t come from both parties of the relationship.

Article Body:
They say a healthy and harmonious relationship promotes well-being to the people involved in it.  But what happens when the marriage starts dwindling?  When the sparks seem to have disappeared?  Anxiety builds up - anxiety that will destroy the couple’s general outlook on relationships.  And what’s the first solution that comes to mind?  Marriage counselling.

But before trying to save a dwindling relationship, we need to understand how many stages marriage passes.  There are 4 stages that every successful marriage goes through.  These are: Romance or Honeymoon stage; Reality stage; Accommodation stage; and the Transformation or Success Stage.

Stage one, the honeymoon stage.  Newlyweds are still caught up by the excitement and romance of their relationship.  At this point, sexual attraction is still at its strongest.  At this point in the marriage, partners disregard differences, sometimes even taking it as a good thing, as they discover each other and sharing a life together.  During this stage, couples think that the marriage will go smoothly and will work itself out naturally.  Couples, at this time, think that their relationship will last forever as they are overflowing with love.

Stage two, the reality stage.  This stage is where reality starts setting in.  This is when the couple start learning more about themselves and each other in different situations they haven’t gone through as a couple before.  Some of the situations the couple may encounter may not agree to their prior expectations and may end up causing conflict.  Oftentimes, couples notice that there are more things they disagree on during marriage as compared to when they were still dating.

This stage is the most challenging part of the relationship, and puts the marriage at higher risks of affairs and divorces during the first two years.  The reality stage brings about certain feelings of disappointment, isolation and a let-down after the excitement of the wedding period.  Couples start harboring feelings of anxiety towards the whole marriage and often misinterpret this natural transition as incompatibility and start thinking that they’ve chosen the wrong partner.

Also, during this phase, sex feels more of a routine as the excitement fades away.  Some couples equate this to losing the so-called “spark” of the relationship and is also misinterpreted a lost of times.  Couple who have not foreseen this stage of the marriage begin feeling alienated and start drifting apart at this point in the relationship.

Stage three, the accommodation stage.  This is when couples work out their differences to renew the strength of their bond.  This includes learning the needs of both partners and how to manage differences and areas of conflicts, and it should be done in a humble, down-to-earth manner.

Stage four, the transformation or success stage.  At this part of the marriage, the couple gets to enjoy the benefits of the marriage that is both capable to satisfy their needs and provide them mutual support.  This eventually lead to a longer lasting intimacy as the couple shares all the experiences of ups and downs.  This is the part where the couple enjoys the rewards of the hard work they put in during the reality and accommodation stage, and work to keep the relationship working smoothly.

As mentioned earlier, during the reality stage of the marriage, couples grow anxious of each other as differences and conflicts of interest start resurfacing.  As feelings of anxiety grow, so does the fear of having chosen the wrong partner.  Couples then experience more and more difficulty getting along with each other and tend to want to break free from the marriage.  This is where marriage counselling comes into play.  During marriage counselling, doctors or trained professionals help the couple understand each other’s differences and help them work through it. This may also entail discussing the couple’s sexual activity and how each partner feels about it.  Couple’s therapy may touch on sensitive issues such as infidelity, divorce, substance abuse, physical or mental illnesses, finances & unemployment, infertility; which could all end up harmful to the partners both physically and mentally.  Counselling helps restore the intimacy and prosperity of the relationship.  Of course, no amount of counselling or help will work without both partners consent to undergo such a process.

Keeping a relationship, to be more specific, a marriage, is difficult and requires work.  Love may be the reason couples are together, but it isn’t the only thing that binds them together until the end.  It is important for would-be couples to understand these normal stages of marriage development before tying the knot to be prepared for whatever may happen during the marriage.  Understand these development stages minimizes adjustment issues and helps set more realistic expectations of the relationship.

How about those fabulous bike rides in the park! What about grilling barbeque on the deck? Are you down for a little surfing and tanning on the beach? Summer will be upon us in less than six weeks. Not only do we want to enjoy the warm months that are rapidly approaching, we want to look like we are enjoying them.

It doesn’t matter if it is ten, twenty, forty, or seventy pounds, just get started!

Weight loss should be slow and steady, while focusing on cutting calories and increasing exercise. It is important to refrain from overexerting yourself. Weight loss takes time.

I have never been one to acknowledge or accept the idea of dieting. The true meaning of dieting is counting and managing your calories for a specific amount of time in order to reach a target weight goal. This concerns me because it is temporary. What happens when you resume your normal eating habits? You gain weight!

I believe in making a complete paradigm in the way we think about food. You can do this by establishing good eating habits. Why not establish a habit of consuming 500-600 calories for breakfast instead of 1,500? If you replace muffins, bagels, pancakes, sausage, grits and bacon with fruit, turkey bacon, cottage cheese, grain cereal, or yogurt, you will probably find yourself 10 pounds lighter on breakfast alone. Do the same for lunch and dinner and lose an additional 10-20 pounds. Wait until you add exercise into the equation.

Exercise for thirty minutes per day, four to five times a week and watch additional pounds drop.
Of course, this takes determination and discipline. Yet, habits are habits. Once you get used to a routine of eating certain foods, it becomes second nature. Weight management not only helps you look better, but helps you feel better. You will begin to notice an increase in energy and an improvement in health.

It is important to monitor the amount of cholesterol you consume. Diets high in cholesterol can lead to heart disease, heart attacks and stroke. Be sure to get a cholesterol screening on a regular basis. Eat fish at least twice a week, preferably those with darker flesh, such as, salmon, herring mackerel, and lake trout. They are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which lower blood cholesterol.

It is also important to eat foods that will not contribute to high blood pressure. Limit your alcohol intake to less than two drinks per day, limit your salt intake, and reduce the saturated fat in your diet. Saturated fat can be found in animal products like milk, cheese, and meat. Let go of the cigarettes or tobacco products! Smoking increases your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Try nonfat yogurt, salsa, or nonfat sour cream instead of sour cream or butter on baked potatoes. Try substituting fresh vegetables and tomatoes sauce for creamy sauces, when eating pasta.

Substitute basic breads and cereal grains for bagels, muffins, and croissants.

A diet high in fruits and vegetables will help you ward off cancer and other diseases because of the cancer-fighting agents contained in them. They contain a lot of fiber and a diet high in fiber decreases your risk of developing colon cancer and other types of cancer. Fruits and vegetables also contain Vitamin A (beta carotene) and C, both of which contain cartenoids and antioxidants.

Cartenoids can also be found in dark leafy vegetables, carrots, cantaloupe, papaya, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes. Additional sources of Vitamin C are strawberries, oranges, broccoli, peppers, and tomatoes. It is always best to lightly steam your vegetables. The closer they are to being raw, the higher their nutritional value.

People have asked me how exercise can give you energy. It seems as though it takes your energy away because you utilize so much energy when you exercise. This is the farthest thing from the truth. The more you exercise and lose weight, the more energy you get and keep because you are carrying less weight, which takes less energy. The more you exercise, the more you are able to exercise.

After you get your weight to a manageable level, monitor or keep a close eye on it. Weigh yourself everyday. That way, you can take measures or do things to nip sudden weight gain. If you find yourself five or ten pounds heavier than your target weight, you should cut back immediately. It becomes a problem when we wait until we are 30, 60, or 100 pounds overweight. It can feel like you’re fighting a losing battle when your weight gain has become too extreme.

It is a good idea to make a list of different ways to incorporate walking into your daily life. If you live near a metro transit station, drive there, park your car and ride the train and walk to work. If you are a new mother, get a stroller that will enable you to burn calories while you are walking your baby. Why not take the stairs, instead of the elevator? You would be surprised at how many calories you can burn by gardening, swimming, skating, hiking, and dancing. Believe it or not, you can have fun while losing weight. Exercise, along with a positive attitude, and a healthy diet will help you to manage your weight and improve your health. Exercise does not have to be rigorous to be valuable. You will probably do yourself a disservice by exercising too hard. Take it easy. Just gradually build up your resistance to a manageable level. Always remember that if you can not talk and walk at the same time, then you are walking too fast.

If you have any of the following health problems, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

• Heart trouble
• Dizziness or faintness
• Chest pains
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Arthritis

How to prepare food for a good diet and low calories:

• Eat Fish at least twice a week, preferable baked, broiled, or grilled. Reduce serving size to 2-3 ounces.

• To reduce fat, use lean poultry and fish, as well as, lean cuts of meat such as top and bottom round and tenderloin. Avoid second servings. Feel free to replace some meats with beans or grains.

• Eat at least three to five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. Fruit like kiwi, figs, apples, raspberries, and blueberries are high in fiber and nutrition. Vegetables such as, broccoli, brussel sprouts, beets, cauliflower, carrots, spinach, chili peppers, red bell peppers, squash, sweet potatoes and tomatoes have high nutritional value and are great anti-oxidants (contain cancer-fighting agents).

• Eat whole-grain, whole-wheat bread, pasta, tortillas, and cereals daily

• Eat cooked dry beans, peas, and lentils regularly

• Eat popcorn with no added oil, salt, or butter.

• Drink skim milk or 1% milk

• You should drink at least 24 ounces of water per day, especially since you will be exercising.

• Limit the oil you use for cooking

• Steam your vegetables or sauté using wine or a half teaspoon of oil

• Use herbs and spices for seasoning, instead of sauces and butter

• Salads should be eaten with fat-free dressing or a combination of red wine vinegar and oil

• Drink a glass of water in the morning when you wake

• Limit your consumption of lean, red meat to no more than four times per month

Counting Cards: How to Escape Detection

Word Count:

We show you how to count cards at your local casino without getting caught.

Article Body:
It is not a secret for anyone that casinos do not like blackjack counters and frequently ask them to leave or to play another game. Here, we will describe how casino management detects counters and how to act when caught. We also describe the countermeasures that casinos use against skilled players but most of all we show you how to count cards while not getting caught.

Do Casinos Object?
Most casinos have strict policies that ban any player from counting cards when playing blackjack, but some like those in New Jersey do not pay any attention to such players.

How Do You Know Whether A Casino Minds?
You do not. But you had better act as if they all do and thus save yourself the embarressment of being shoved out if they do mind and if they catch you red-handed.

How to Count Without Getting Detected?
Always keep in mind that since card counting is something that one does silently, the only method to detect it is through observing you and the manner you play. Thus, look out for the following:
1) Do not stare at the cards of other players. Glance once, count, and then move on.
2) Do not stare at the cards that have been discarded. Look quickly and then slowly move away by shifting your gaze nonchalantly from player to player.
3) Change your pattern of betting occassionaly.
4) Change the amount of betting money each round.
5) Even though you know it, loose a round or two. Do not bet big on those rounds. But likewise do not bet too small too. If the casino notices that you are always winning big and losing small, they might get suspicious.
6) Buy chips of different colours and then mix them around while playing to confuse the dealer.
7) Talk to the other players while playing, but this is especially difficult so practice this at home before trying it at a casino.
8) Pick your seat carefully: either the first chair or the third one so that you won't have to twist your head around as the cards are dealt.
9) Dress casually because smart and elegant clothes cause the dealers to think you are intelligent and they might watch you more closely.
10) Order an alcoholic drink and pretend to sip it because they are looking for those non-drinkers who are staying sober to count the cards.

The common denominator of all these is that you must never forget that the casino si watching you and how you play. Act accordingly!

Supposing that the Casino Catches On, What Should you Do?
Stay calm if the casino catches you counting cards and abide by their wishes quietely. Do not make a fuss. If they ask you to leave, do so. The faster you leave, the easier it will be for you to return later. Remember that if you make a fuss, they will all remember you, so desist from any unfriendly behaviour. Note that after shifts change, the new personnel won't know you so all you have to do is wait for that and then you can start playing again. You could also just enter the next casino and start earning money there instead of risking casino personnel from recognizing you.

Counting our way out of anxiety

Word Count:

The article is about the prevalence of math anxiety among school children which is attributed to poor teaching, myths and misconceptions about mathematics.  It also cites a number of simple steps to slowly overcome math anxiety.

math anxiety

Article Body:
Mathematics is still one of the most challenging subjects faced by ordinary grade school and high school students.  It is not uncommon to hear of students who flunk at math not just for because the subject is hard to learn, but also because they are afflicted with what is now called by teachers as --- math anxiety.

Math anxiety is referred to as an intense feeling of helplessness or frustration about one's ability (or lack of it) to accomplish mathematical tasks or solve mathematical problems.  Some who have this “academic malady” claimed that their minds suddenly go blank and they feel terrified once they look at a mathematical question or test.  Many have proclaimed their sworn hate for the subject and have simply resigned to what they consider to be fact --- that they cannot learn to do math.

But what does make math difficult, or at least, different?  According to math teachers, their subject of expertise is unlike other courses or subjects taught in school for the following reasons:

1. Math involves the study of various processes. In other subjects, you learn and understand the material without necessarily having to apply it.  In math, you have to learn the lessons or processes such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division – and then, you have to move on to a workbook, apply those lessons, and solve math problems.

2. Math is considered to be a linear learning process where one such process is taught and used today,  and is used as part of the lessons of the following day, and so forth.  Teachers say that when you study history, you can learn chapter 6 even without passing through some of the previous chapters.  You can skip some parts of history and choose a specific section as part of the lesson. But in Math, you cannot study algebra without first mastering the four basic mathematical operations.  Given this situation, it is easy to understand why some children who failed to master basic concepts find it hard to learn higher math concepts, and, as a consequence, they tend to develop math anxiety.
3. Like a foreign language, math must be practiced daily to retain your skills.
There are other reasons why math is very different from other subjects.  But for sure, many children around the world have to grapple with the numbers and concepts that seem like undecipherable codes.  Math anxiety has become so serious that some academicians believe it is one of the causes for school dropouts.   They said that once the student who is struggling with math feels utterly frustrated in learning the concepts and processes. that student may conclude that going to school is futile.  In fact, test anxiety is often linked to the fear of failing math or the fear of actually having to try to solve a mathematical problem.  When a student fails to study or does not prepare sufficiently for an examination, nervousness and helplessness sets in.   But for a student who suffers from math anxiety, preparing for the examination is already considered “mission impossible” since he cannot even learn the basic lessons.  The only conclusion he can make is that he will fail the math exam --- again.  Clearly, it can be expected that a student suffering from math anxiety would almost always show signs of test anxiety.
Now, what can we actually do to help children cope with math anxiety?

The first step is to recognize that math anxiety is an emotional response.  It is not a permanent condition.
The second step is to know that certain myths and misconceptions have actually reinforced poor math performance. One such misconception is that a student can only be good either in language or in math, and not at both fields of study.  A student who performs well in English grammar class may be a dunce at arithmetic, while a good math student would surely stammer during a poetry class. Education experts say that nothing can be farther from the truth. They insist that if schooled well, children can be good in languages and in numbers. They say that a good foundation in arithmetic is necessary to do well in higher level of mathematics.  Academicians are also careful to add that teachers play a major role in developing a healthy and positive regard for studying math.   If children experience repeated frustration and failure in learning math, it may be the “teacher factor” that is causing the anxiety and inability to learn.  Good math teachers are necessary to make the subject more interesting and rewarding for the students.  The third and most obvious step is to buckle down to work and try to learn math from the very beginning. As mentioned earlier, it entails a linear, progressive mastery of concepts and processes.  As in all things in life, mathematics, too, must be learned one step at a time.

Couples rejoice because of IVF

Word Count:

Infertility is a major concern for women around the world not only due to biological concerns but also due to the socio-cultural definitions attached to “real” womanhood --- which supposedly includes the ability to conceive and give birth. Medical innovations such as In Vitro Fertilization, however, have made the challenge of conception or pregnancy a  surmountable problem.

Infertility,  endometriosis

Article Body:
In a recently held beauty pageant, once contestant was asked this question:  "What is the essence of being a woman?" Confidently, the attractive young lady replied, "The very essence of a woman is to bear a child.”

At first, one would think that there is merit to this short but sure answer.   However, one should still ask: What if a woman cannot conceive a child? What if she choose to be child-less?  Does being child-less disqualify a person from becoming a full-fledged woman?

These questions can be answered from different perspectives.  However, any discussion on this subject must not be made without taking into consideration the important aspect of infertility --- an issue that is already a major concern for women all over the world.

Female infertility is defined as a woman's biological inability to conceive a child or the inability to carry a pregnancy to full-term.  According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, infertility affects at least 6.1 million American women and their partners, or about 10% of the reproductive age population.

The subject of infertility has always been considered a “woman's problem.”  However, it is time to debunk that myth since not all pregnancy problems should be associated to women.  Experts say that 80% of cases that were diagnosed as infertility are due to male problems. Infertility may be due to a single cause in either a woman or her male partner, or a combination of factors that may prevent a pregnancy from occurring or continuing to full-term.

According to the National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC), most women in their late 30s are 30% less fertile than they were in their early 20s. About 20 percent of infertility cases are the result of fallopian tube disease. It also added that between 30 and 40 percent of women with endometriosis are infertile. In 85 to 90 percent of all cases, infertility is treated with either medication or surgery. However, recent improvements and innovations in medications such as microsurgery and assisted reproductive technologies (ART) can now make pregnancy possible. An example of assisted reproductive technology is called In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), a procedure that has made possible the delivery of more than 45, 000 babies, as of the latest count.

In Vitro Fertilization is a fertility procedure that was first successfully conducted by Dr. Robert Edwards, an embryologist; and Dr. Patrick Steptoe, a gynecologist.  The first-ever “test tube” baby named Louise Brown was born in England on July 25, 1978. Since then, the technology has been further advanced and developed by physicians and embryologists.

In Vitro Fertilization technique is an alternative used for women who have blocked fallopian tubes. In Vitro is actually a Latin phrase that means, “in a glass.”  As such, this procedure involves the fertilization of an egg cell with a sperm cell outside the female human body.  Medications are given to a woman to stimulate her ovaries to produce multiple eggs. After extracting the woman's eggs cells, the fertilization is manually done using a “culture dish” like a test tube, beaker, or petri dish.  The dish is then placed in an incubator. Two to three days later, three to five embryos are transferred to the woman's uterus. Pregnancy can be confirmed using blood tests about 13 days after egg aspiration. It can also be confirmed by ultrasound 30 to 40 days after aspiration. The entire procedure is done approximately for three weeks.

As with most medical procedures, there are some potential risks in the IVF procedure.  The main risk of IVF is the possibility of multiple births which come as a result transferring multiple embryos during the actual IVF procedure.

The issue of male and female infertility is of utmost importance to thousands if not millions of couples around the world.  Pregnancy and childbirth are considered as the ultimate experience for couples who dream of having their own family.  With the advancements in medical technology and growing popularity of IVF as a fertility method, the question about the “essence of womanhood” need not be a hindrance for women to realize their true worth.

Couples, Pregnancy And Murder: The Maternal Murder Phenomenon

Word Count:

Pregnant women have been the target of partners who do not want to assume responsibility for the unborn child.

pregnancy, fear and anxiety

Article Body:
In recent years, the high profile murder cases of Laci Peterson and Lori Hacking in the United States has brought to light an growing threat to pregnant women---murder.  According to a March 2001 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) using death records and coroner reports, state health department researchers found 247 pregnancy-associated deaths between 1993 and 1998, suggesting that the maternal murder phenomenon is the leading cause of death among pregnant women.

Pregnancy should be a time of great joy between a couple, so why are all those women getting murdered by their partners? According to Dr. Diana Cheng, director of women's health at the Maryland Department of Health and Medical Hygiene and her colleague Dr. Isabelle Horon, “Women tend to think pregnancy is a safety zone, especially if they are already in an abusive relationship, but what we're seeing is that no woman is safe from domestic violence or its most severe consequences." Unfortunately, most women who are in abusive relationships are physically assaulted by their partners even during pregnancy. Sometimes, this violence can result in injury for both the mother and child, miscarriage or death. The more alarming thing is that while the male partners of these pregnant women are often the chief suspects in the murder, it can be hard for the police to prove the fact and these men can go free to go on and abuse other women.

Why then would a woman stay in an abusive relationship? Unfortunately, apart from the financial aspect, many women are compelled to stay in the relationship because of companionship and for the sake of the child. Many victims of domestic violence find convenient excuses for their partner's behavior, some driven by the shame and disbelief that such a thing was happening to them. Women who are in comfortable financial positions and social standing may have more options but are not less vulnerable to domestic violence. Some women have asked, if he doesn't want the responsibility of a child, then why doesn't he just leave? Leaving the pregnant woman may be simple, but once the child is born there are other factors that will still tie him to his unwanted partner and child such as child support and alimony.

Many of the men who murdered their pregnant partners had shown signs of psychopathic behavior even before the murder, and were likely to have been arrested for domestic violence. If you are pregnant and your partner isn't feeling as joyous about the pregnancy as you are, it could be normal. Pregnancy is a big, life-changing event for the couple, and for men the emotional and financial responsibility it places on them can seem overwhelming. This feeling of fear and anxiety may be compounded by outside stressors such as problems with work, issues with their parents and physical or psychological problems. However, if you are getting some vibes that send cold chills up your spine, look for some signs and ask yourself these questions. Has your partner asked or told you to have an abortion? Has he said, he's not ready to be a father yet? Did he break-off the relationship because of the pregnancy? Have you had disastrous conversations about child support? Any comments about you personally being the wrong person to have his child? Is your relationship an abusive one?

If your partner has made direct threats that he would cause you harm if you plan to have the baby, protect yourself. Don't keep the news to yourself, tell your friends or family about it, and if the harassment escalates report it to local law enforcement agencies. There are also support groups that can help you during this difficult time. It might also be a good idea to move to a different residence. It is better to be proactive than to end up dead. Don't wait until its too late.

title:Couple Of Easiest Ways to Burn Fat Effectively
author:Chris Read
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

# 1) The first thing to do in the morning is to “Start Exercising “.
The first thing you should do in the morning to have some cardio work out for at least half an hour. Studies have shown that having some aerobics (high impact aerobics class, running, sex) as well as anaerobic (low impact aerobics, weight lifting, circuit training, swimming and walking) exercises in the morning, to be really effective in burning up to 4x more fat as opposed to working out at any other time during the day. Here's lies the reason:
Your body's main source of energy is the carbohydrates which you get from eating your daily meals. As you sleep at night for 6-8 hours, your body burns up all those carbohydrates as energy for various metabolic functions that go on even while you sleep. So, when you wake up in the morning, your body doesn't have any carbohydrates as energy to use as it’s already been consumed by then and it seeks another source to gain energy instead, so it starts burning body fat.
So to utilize this cycle of the body, what you need is to take exercise early in the morning. Avoid eating breakfast because that will give your body some carbohydrates as a source of energy which you don’t need at that time.
It has other advantages too. Your metabolism gets revved up immediately after your morning workout. It will keep the metabolism elevated throughout the day. An elevated metabolism throughout the day means that you'll have to burn more and more calories and thus lose more weight. If you exercise at night you may still burn fat while you workout but as soon as you go to sleep your metabolism will slow down and you'll miss out on all the extra fat that you can burn during the day. When you sleep your metabolic rate is always at its slowest. Also working out in the morning definitely reduces your level of stress throughout the day.
Tip for Naives: Want to burn fat even more? Add another workout to your daily routine 6 hours after your morning workout. If you're seriously thinking about adding another workout to your daily routine then try to do your cardio workouts in the morning because mostly of the fat calories are burned doing cardio at a moderate intensity. Build your 2nd workout of the day with weights. Mostly carbohydrate is burned doing weight-training workouts. 1lb of Muscle burns 50 calories a day or 1lb of fat every 70 days.
# 2) Having Breakfast is a stipulation.
Another way to keep your metabolism revved up all day long is to have breakfast without miss. Eating breakfast in the morning gets your metabolism started. Don't skip breakfast and wait until mid-morning or afternoon to eat, your metabolism will run slower causing you not burn any extra fat.
You can think this way-Your metabolism is a fireplace that'll burn fat for you all day long if you can operate it correctly. When you eat breakfast you are basically adding a catalyst to aggravate the burning of the Fat.
Eating breakfast will help stop those cravings you may have later on in the day and along with working out in the morning, eating breakfast will also keep you energized throughout the day.
Tip for Naives: Instead of eating only, the more general, 2 more meals during the day, i.e. lunch & dinner, try to eat 4-5 mini-meals spaced between 2-3 hours apart during the day. By eating those mini-meals you'll be throwing just the right amount of "wood" on the fireplace to keep your metabolism burning calories throughout the day.
Check list for the morning
1. Cardio workout for at least 30 min early in the morning
2. Have a healthy breakfast
just by using those couple of tips change yourself to fit into that dress for an upcoming event like a wedding, reunion or to impress that special someone for your life and remain pink for the rest time. Whatever your fitness goal is these tips should be able to surely help you reach them.

The emergency first aid protocol for an unconscious person on whom both breathing and pulse cannot be detected is called cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). It is a combination of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions. This kind of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation was first described in the Bible, but it fell out of practice. Drs. James Elam and Peter Safar rediscovered it in the 1950s. In the early 1960s, the advantages of chest compression to help artificial circulation was discovered by Drs. Kouwenhoven, Knickerbocker and Jude. Both mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compression were then combined to form modern CPR.

Kouwenhoven, Knickerbocker and Jude. Both mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compression were then combined to form modern CPR.

CPR is usually taught to people who may be the only ones present in the crucial few minutes before emergency personnel arrive. Lack of oxygen can cause permanent damage to the brain or lead to death in less than eight minutes. Effective CPR helps enough oxygen reach the brain and delay brain death. It allows the heart to remain responsive to defibrillation attempts.

CPR has three basic rules: (a) the victim's airway must be open for breathing to be restored. (b) Rescue breathing -- when the rescuer forces air into the lungs of the victim by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and (c) when rescue breathing alone is not enough and chest compressions are needed to start circulation.

CPR acts as a substitute pumping to circulate blood when the heart cannot. All it does is provide some amount of air and circulation to a victim, allowing more time for help to arrive. The goal is only to maintain the circulation of oxygenated blood to the brain until more advanced medical help arrives to provide advanced cardiac life support . It is not the way restart the heart, a myth inaccurately portrayed by  the media.  Nor is it the definitive treatment of cardiac arrest, as only 5% of victims regain regular heatbeat solely by CPR . CPR is never guaranteed to save someone's life and should only be performed when a person isn't breathing or circulating blood adequately. Whenever CPR is needed, remember to first call for emergency medical assistance.

title:CPT Codes; What are you Getting Billed for?
author:Mike Nielsen

All of us visit some sort of medical office from time to time and some of us make the visit a routine. No matter how many times we go in for a checkup or treatment we usually end up paying a relatively inexpensive co-pay for the services rendered to us. So who makes up the difference and how do they pay it? Obviously, the doctors and nurses that we visit are not making a living off of our co-pay; so how do they obtain the additional money from our heath care provider? In this article, I will tell you the basic information about CPT Codes and what they are used for.
CPT Code background
Before CPT Codes existed and when ICD-9-CM codes were just being developed, doctors had to write out in words what symptoms a patient had, what the diagnosis most likely was, and what visits, services, and procedures they thought they should get paid for. Then in 1966 Current Procedural Terminology or CPT was designed by the American Medical Association to assist doctors in billing Medicare and health providers using codes. Doctors use the CPT Codes to specify to health care providers the service rendered so that they can get paid. Currently with 8,568 codes and descriptors available with the CPT 2005 Codes, it is easy to see why these codes can sometimes drive doctors crazy with regard to knowing which ones to use and for what. However, the general idea behind the codes was to help doctors and create a standard as to what Medicare and health providers will pay for.
Where do CPT Codes come from?
There is a panel of 17 members, called the CPT Editorial Panel, who meet 4 times every year to consider proposals for changes to the CPT Codes.  The American Medical Association provides this staff which is responsible for editing, adding, and deleting CPT Codes. There is also a CPT Advisory Committee, made up of representative form over 90 medical societies and heath care organizations, which assist the Editorial Panel in its efforts to maintain the CPT Codes.
What are the CPT Code categories?
CPT Codes are classified into three categories. Category I are five digit codes that make up the main body of CPT Codes. When someone refers to CPT Codes, they are generally referring to category I. The codes found in category I represent procedures that are consistent with contemporary medical practice and are widely performed. Category I codes are then broken down into the following six sections.

Evaluation and Management
Pathology and Laboratory

Category II CPT Codes are supplemental tracking codes that are used for performance measurement. They typically describe services that are included in an evaluation and management service. They are optional four digit codes followed by the letter “F” which should not be used as a substitute for category I codes.
Category III CPT Codes represent temporary codes for new and developing technologies. They were created to allow for data collection and tracking for new procedures and services. Category III codes are different from Category I CPT codes in that they identify services that may not be performed by many health care professionals. The hope behind these codes is to help researchers track developing technology and services to facilitate widespread use and clinical effectiveness. The Category III codes are four digits long followed by the letter “T”. These codes are intended to be temporary and will be abandoned if the procedure or service is not accepted as a Category I code within five years.
As you can see, CPT Codes are a valuable asset to the medical world. They create a unified system of coding that is accepted and used throughout the United States. These codes are modified and updated every year to account for the changes in the medical field. You now have a better knowledge of how your medical health provider is charged each and every time you have any medical work performed.
Cracked By Crack: The Side Effects of Cocaine Withdrawal and Abuse

Word Count:

Cocaine, both in the common form and the more refined “crack” form, can cause a wide range of side effects on the body. Some of these symptoms are aggravated by withdrawal from the drug, while others manifest only once the drug is being removed from the system. The effects are both mental and physical, with things like panic, insomnia, coughing, and nasal congestion being commonly cited problems during the detoxification process.

mental health, chronic pain, side effects, insomnia, fear and anxiety, muscle spasms, panic disorders

Article Body:
Pure cocaine, along with the so-called “poor man's cocaine” known as “crack,” is among the most widely  abused substances in the world today. The pure cocaine in powder form is usually mistaken as fine sugar or baking soda.  The street variant called crack is diluted and mixed with baking soda, allowing the street pushers to reap more profits. People who become addicted to both cocaine and “crack” are considered to be among the worst addicts that can be found in a rehab clinic mainly because of the intense physical and mental health damage that prolonged use can lead to. There is an extensive list of negative effects associated with long-term use of “crack.”  Withdrawal from crack addiction is also very difficult in physiological and psychological terms.

Nasal passages, which are the primary pathways by which cocaine gets into an addict's body, can also suffer severe damage due to prolonged abuse. However, the damage tends to manifest only after the drug has been removed and withdrawal has occurred. Among the possible side effects of the damage are runny noses, nasal congestion, and nose bleeding. These side effects are relatively minor and can easily be treated by using the appropriate medications and having good environment, especially at home. During  cocaine withdrawal, nasal problems are likely going to be the least of a recovering addict's worries.

Panic attacks similar to those developed by people with panic disorders are not uncommon to both addicts and recovering users. This is more pronounced once a person undergoes withdrawal because  there is no longer the psychologically “stabilizing” effect of the drug. Also, people undergoing withdrawal have become so used to having “crack” on hand that they are almost mentally incapacitated by being deprived of it. Insomnia is also a recognized side effect of being forcibly withdrawn from cocaine abuse. However, insomnia encountered during withdrawal has a shorter range of effect compared with regular cases of insomnia. Mild headaches and occasional periods of excessive fear and anxiety are also possible symptoms of prolonged abuse, though they are not considered common.

Muscle spasms are usually associated with the more violent cases of withdrawal. This is particularly common in those cases where the user has developed a dependency on the cocaine being in the system, such that the mind no longer believes the body can function without it. Muscle spasms are usually a minor indication of a worsening problem in cases such as this, since people who develop them tend to suffer more physically violent symptoms of drug withdrawal. These problems generally occur in the earlier stages of withdrawal, as the shock to the body being cut off from “crack” is still fresh. As the withdrawal sets in and the cleansing process is underway, the body slowly adjusts to a normal state and the likelihood of muscle spasms and convulsions decreases considerably.

Chronic pain in the chest and coughing have also been noted as possible symptoms. Some withdrawal patients report that the coughing can sometimes be accompanied by severe chest pains. Phlegm coughed up by these patients tend to be colored black and are generally not mixed with blood unless the patient has another respiratory condition. Coughing and phlegm of this sort also manifests in people that abuse marijuana or nicotine. This is generally alleviated by any number of over-the-counter cough medications or increased intake of water and other fluids.

title:Cracked Skin – Fill In Those Gaps
author:Sharon Hopkins

When you suffer from eczema or psoriasis, your skin cracks, thus presenting you with painful slits or fissures. They cause agony even while doing simple movements. Your skin cracks and it can give you a terrible pain. The hands and feet are the most vulnerable spots for this problem. But other spots like the mouth, lips, cheeks etc. too can be affected. Usually, the areas between toes and on the heels are affected. These fissures, if neglected, can cause infection. Generally, women who wear open-backed heels and slides are affected.
Treatment for the cracked skin:
• Soak yourself: The best treatment for dry skin is to have a good bath every night before going to sleep. This enables your skin cells to absorb water, since these cells are like sponge. You can also soak the affected body part for about 20 minutes in warm water and then pat dry.
• Apply petroleum products: Once you are through with your bath, apply a coating of petroleum jelly product. Then put on a pair of socks for your feet or a pair of light cotton gloves for your hands to seal the moisture. These petroleum products work far better than commercial moisturizers, since they do not have the same sealing effects.
• Stick the cracks: You can apply glue to ease the pain caused by the fissures. This takes the air out of the nerve endings and thus sticks the slits. This procedure is completely safe for slits and minor cuts. However, avoid using this method on deep wounds.
• Avoid tartar toothpaste: If you suffer from cracked lips, minimize your usage of tartar toothpaste. This toothpaste contains compounds that irritate the mucuous membranes and other sensitive tissues. These toothpastes leave the skin cracked and cause a rash which itches around the mouth.
Following some of the above mentioned steps can help you in preventing/curing cracked skin.
title:Cracked Up Glossary Of Common Gym Terms
author:Nick Nilsson
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:10

If you’ve ever had occasion to visit a gym, you’ve no doubt heard people talking about "feeling the burn" and "pumping up."  But did you ever wonder what people were really saying?  Here are some common terms and phrases that will help you to learn what is really going on in the gym.

In The Zone - Tired and incoherent during a workout.  Commonly described out of the gym as "spaced out."
Extended Warm-Up - 20 minutes at low tension on the stationary bike then 20 minutes of casual stretching then a shower.
"Just One More Rep" - Said to a spotter during a set. Really means: "Lift the weight for me."
Forced Reps - For the reluctant exerciser, every single rep of a workout is a forced rep.  This is especially true when they have a mean trainer.
Hack Squat - The position a cat gets into when he’s coughing up a hairball, commonly mistaken as a leg exercise.
"Can I work in with you?" - Translation: "Can I remove all your weights and sweat all over your bench?"
Drop Sets - What sometimes happens after doing a hard set of dumbell bench presses.  A triple drop set occurs when you drop two dumbells and yourself to the floor.
Bulking Up - Name for the phase during which an otherwise healthy trainer will try to get bigger and fatter on purpose.
"I’m maxing out" - Translation: "I was going for 6 reps but I put too much weight on the bar and only got 1."
Cool-down - Sit on a bench and drink from a water bottle while talking about how much more you’ll lift next time.
Olympic Bar - Athlete’s nightclub.
E-Z Bar - "How dare you!  I’m not that type of bar."
Squat rack - The lonliest piece of equipment in the gym.
"It’s all you!" - Said by spotter during the last few reps of a set. Translatation: "It’s mostly me."
Pro-hormones - Hormones that have lost their amateur status.
Meal Replacement Supplement - Cold pizza and warm beer.
Clean and Press - Surprisingly enough, it’s a shoulder exercise, not laundry instructions.  A variation of it is even known as the Hang Clean and Press.
High Intensity Interval Training - Occurs when there are two or more flights of stairs leading up to the gym.
Skullcrushers - An exercise where you make like you’re going to bash your own head in with a barbell, a.k.a. lying tricep extensions.
"Hold the contraction at the top and squeeze for 10 seconds" - Said by a personal trainer when he or she wants to punish the client for missing a session.

Now that you’ve got an idea of what is being said at the gym, you’ll be able to converse comfortably with the natives.  You will be completely understood in any gym in the world when you walk in and say "I just did two sets of high intensity intervals and now I’m ready for some forced reps" or "I’m taking a lot of meal replacement supplements because I’m bulking up."

Article Body:
Researchers at the University of Rochester have published information showing that the cranberry may be effective at preventing tooth decay. The research focuses on the inhibiting effect of some compounds found inside the cranberry against a key bacterium blamed in the formation of cavities.

“Scientists believe that one of the main ways that cranberries prevent urinary tract infections is by inhibiting the adherence of pathogens on the surface of the bladder. Perhaps the same is true in the mouth, where bacteria use adhesion molecules to hold onto teeth,” says Dr. Michel Koo, an oral biologist and food scientist at the university's medical center.

While this may sound like good news for those who are looking for natural ways to support their body, it’s very important to understand what’s in cranberry juice before making a purchase. Always remember to read the labels. Most cranberry juice is cranberry flavored apple juice. Sometimes it is also mixed with grape juice. Other ingredients may even include high-Fructose corn syrup. Towards the end of the ingredient list is found cranberry concentrate.

While, drinking apple juice and grape juice is probably a dietary improvement for most people, juices that are made with so much processed sugar are clearly little more than cranberry flavored juices. They’re unlikely to contain significant amounts of the compounds that make cranberries useful in the prevention of tooth decay and tend to contain large amounts of the compounds that are blamed on tooth decay.

Purer forms of cranberry juice have a very strong flavor. Some people can develop a taste for unsweetened cranberries, while other people can only handle cranberries when blended with some other juice. If choosing a cranberry blend, be sure to read the ingredient label and avoid juices that are sweetened with processed sugars and diluted with juices that are mostly the sugars that lead to cavities.

Further research will be necessary before cranberries can actually be promoted as a preventative for tooth decay. However others sugars such as Xylose, are already used in “sugarless gums” because of their proven ability to inhibit bacterial development on the surface of teeth. Such gums are of course called sugarless because they do not have sucrose and glucose which are the sugars associated with cavities.

Cranberries have also been shown to have beneficial effects for people with chronic urinary tract infections. The compound believed to be responsible for this is a simple monosaccharide sugar called Mannose. Identified in Harpers Biochemistry as one of eight sugars necessary for normal cellular function, Mannose has also been shown to prevent bacterial infection and development.

These necessary monosaccharide sugars can all be found in a single dietary supplement. It also contains the other sugars identified in Harpers Biochemistry, based of their importance in biological functions. This can provide a more convenient choice for people wishing to improve their diets by increasing their nutrient intake while limiting the intake of food compounds which are not beneficial to good health.

Article Body:
Craps tournaments popularity is increasing lately. If you are a novice craps player who is still intimidated by the great selection of bets or you find the fuss around the craps tables too loud, you might not be able to enjoy playing craps tournaments. If you are an enthusiastic craps shooter, taking part in a craps tournament is a great way to enjoy a more intensive craps playing experience, meet other craps fans and, of course, a chance to win bigger cash prizes as well as the desired title.

Many casinos hold different types of craps tournaments to suit the different levels of skills and budgets of the players. Here you can find tips on the different types of casino craps tournaments including tips on how to choose the most suitable and enjoyable craps tournament as possible. In addition, you can find here tips on how to win in craps tournament.

Choosing a Craps Tournament

Cost: The cost of playing in a craps tournament can range from a free entry and a low buy in to an expensive entry fee with a high buy in. The prizes, needless to say, are corresponding; the higher the entry fee the larger the grand prize. The free tournaments are usually held on a weekly basis for promotional purposes while the high stack tourneys are pre scheduled, last for more than one day and their expensive entry fees include a cocktail party, free accommodation and other freebies.

Competition: Evaluating the level of the competition you are going to face in advance can be tough. However, the number of entrants allowed to take part in the tournament can give you a basic indication on the level of the competition.

Rules: Casinos often set different rules in craps tournaments. For example, some casinos require players to place a pass or dont pass bet each play on top of any other bets or limit the proposition bet to 25 dollars.

Winning a Craps Tournament

The main difference between playing a traditional craps game and a craps tournament is that with the latter you suddenly find yourself surrounded by competitors. While in a regular craps game you are used to compete against the house, in a craps tournament you are playing against the other entrants and especially against those who have managed to accumulate the biggest amount of chips. Therefore, playing craps tournaments requires amending of you strategy. Primarily, you can no longer ignore your opponents; you must keep an eye on their moves!

Always pay attention to your opponent’s chips; bear in mind that they might have been hiding chips to confuse the other players.
Pay attention especially to your closest opponents; watch their moves and conclude your future bets so you will stay far behind.
Start by playing conservatively; place small bets on pass and come bets.
When an opportunity comes up, for example after making two consecutive points change your pattern and make dont pass bet.
If during the final rolls you are still not leading, it is time to play aggressively; place large even bet your entire bankroll on one number and then hope for the best.

Have fun.

Crash Hits: Common Injuries In Car Accidents

Word Count:

Cars are becoming increasingly common in the modern world, but with that increase also comes an increase in the number of car accidents. According to the statistics, there are several injuries that appear in a vast majority of car accidents. Some of these common injuries can be difficult to recover from, sometimes taking years in extreme cases.

car accidents, chronic pain, mental health, stress, anxiety, lower back pain, knee pain, surgery, infection

Article Body:
Cars are the most visible signs of modernity in an otherwise ancient world. No urban environment would be complete without these four-wheeled machines. Most people see them as a convenience, enabling them to get from point A to point B without having to endure the crowds the rush hours associated with public transportation. However, as cars become more and more available, roads become more and more congested. As the congestion worsens, it is inevitable that car accidents occur and people get hurt. Statistically speaking, car accidents have been occurring with increased frequency over the past decade. The statistics also show that there are a number of injuries that have become common to most car accidents during that period.

Head and neck injuries are listed as being typical to a car accident. The face, in particular, can suffer laceration and cutting from shattered glass or shrapnel generated by the impact. Dental injuries are also possible, particularly for people in the driver's seat or were close to the point of impact. Mental health problems and head trauma are also possibilities. Concussions are not uncommon among car accident-related injuries. Some people also tend to experience anxiety for some time after the accident, though this is much rarer than physical injuries. The most common mental health concerns related to a car accident would be helping the victims overcome the stress of being involved in the accident, as well as the chance of post-traumatic stress disorder.

The body, however, is much more likely to bear the brunt of the damage caused by a car accident. Injuries to the abdomen and legs can result in chronic pain for prolonged periods after an accident. In some cases, accident survivors have had to endure lower back pain for years since their bodies never fully recovered from the damage. Knee pain and damage to leg muscles like the quadriceps can also occur for those who are involved in relatively minor accidents or were not at the point of impact. Areas that have been cut or injured during the accident may also develop an infection, depending on how quickly the wound or opening was addressed by medical teams.

Broken bones and torn muscles are common among car accident victims, though the likely areas to be affected vary depending on the specifics of the accident. Simple and compound fractures can both be experienced, typically requiring extensive time to repair and recover. In a number of cases, surgery may be needed to undo some of the damage done. Most often, drivers will experience trauma and damage to the legs and possibly the torso. Some injuries may not be obvious at first and can only be treated after the victim has been given a full examination.
