Opioid pain killers work by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. In addition to morphine, they include codeine, medications like Darvocet, Vicodin and Oxycontin. Researchers in this study theorized from their findings that with the lower availability of the MORs in three regions of the brain of people with fibromyalgia, such opioid based pain killers may not be able to bind as well to the receptors as they can in the brains of those people without the condition. To make it more simple, when the pain killers cannot bind to the receptors, they cannot relieve the patient's pain as effectively. The reduced availability could result from a reduced number of opioid receptors, enhanced release of endogenous opioids, or both.

The research also found a possible link with depression. The PET scans showed that fibromyalgia patients with more depressive symptoms had reductions of MOR binding potential in the amygdala, a region of the brain thought to adjust mood and the emotional dimension of pain.

In knowing this, people should be more aware of their body and how it reacts to pain. Fibromyalgia is a condition where the intensity of symptoms actually vary. So what were our ancestors doing to remain in good health and shape? First, let’s not neglect the fact that cars weren’t everywhere and that those who lived in towns often were able to walk wherever they needed to go. The days of small town living with a grocery store in walking distance are long gone—suburbia is here. 

What else did our predecessors do? Not only did they walk, but they rode bicycles and generally did more outside than we do today. Computers weren’t even dreamed of at that point, and television didn’t rule their days and nights like it does now. 

They also ate less than we do today. Have you noticed that portions are getting larger and larger as prices go up? Americans really want their ‘money’s worth’ when it comes to eating out, and we’ve become very accustomed to large plates mounded with food. Our great-grandparents wouldn’t have considered eating until they were gorged—oftentimes, there wasn’t enough food to go around the table of the larger families. 

So all of this brings me to my ultimate question: Is going to a gym and working out really necessary? 

If we forget about our ancestors, let’s look at a more ‘modern’ example found in our Amish and Mennonite communities. These individuals don’t partake in gym workouts, and they won’t be seen jogging the roads at 5:30 a.m. Yet they are typically more fit than many personal trainers? So what gives? 

They walk. They move. They bend. They work. They eat when they’re hungry, stop when they’re full, and enjoy a simple lifestyle. They have no computers or televisions to sit and stare at all day (or night), and they don’t have washing machines and dryers to do their laundry chores. 

Think I’m making this up? Try washing all of your clothes by hand on a washboard, wringing each piece out, and then lugging a large basket of wet things to a clothesline to hang out. You’ll build muscles you didn’t even know you had! 

Could it be that simple? Could just going about our daily lives and moving more be the answer to physical fitness? I think that, added to a sensible eating plan, could very well be the nirvana to the quest for fitness in our country.

It’s quite a relief to witness active and valiant efforts to help out North Korea on a particularly devastating incident that happened on April 22, 2004. These efforts to extend a helping hand were even projected over the web. It is a relief, since North Korea has been the target of many attacks for the past few years after the civil war that created the two borders over Korea. 
The incident that came about on April 22 was the explosion of a train loaded with ammonium nitrate fertilizer and tank wagons which obliterated the entire area within a half–mile radius. When the launching of the relief project was projected online on May 2, 2004 at, the deaths already totaled to 161 and it is reported that thousands were burned, blind and/or deaf that lie on cabinets without even the most basic medical supplies. 
According to the reports, most of the victims were school children (over 60% of those who died) and over 2,000 home have been completely destroyed. This incident became the first opportunity of LiNK website to organize all of its chapters and launch their first major independent initiative – “ The Ryongchon Relief Project”. Another thing that prompted them to act was because the Korean Red Cross was granted permission by the North Korean government to transport medical and food supplies directly to North Korea. 
As such, the LiNK did not waste time on getting the attention over the North Korea blog-zone to request donations addressed to pharmaceutical companies, local hospitals, drug stores, university labs and even compassionate individuals. For those interested to send out their donations, they can be coursed via the Korean Red Cross to Ryongchon, directly. 
Phases are programmed in the revival of the Ryongchon area – from emergency phase, they are now into the stabilization phase. For each of this phase, different things are needed. They had particularly listed down the things that are specifically needed so that even individuals or other civic organizations would really know what they could do to contribute even a bit: medical supplies like ointments, antibiotics, antiseptics, bandages, Vaseline, IV fluid, and other treatments to help in the injuries. Ways of shipping location and methods are also elaborated so that people will know how to send their contribution without it being wasted on other pockets.

It is that time of year when the Flu is flourishing in the workplace, classrooms, hospitals, and homes. The influenza virus differs from the common cold in the sudden onset of symptoms. These are severe headaches, fever, chills, muscle aches and sometimes, nausea and diarrhea. The following are some strategies to stay healthier, this flu season.
Get the flu shot. There are three types of flu. However, the type A virus is constantly changing which tricks the body into believing that it is fighting a new virus. The flu shot is the best line of defense in fighting the flu which is most prevalent.
Stay home when ill. Even though the common mode of thought is to drag our bodies to work when we are sick, it is not necessarily the best mode of thought. Studies have shown that sick and ill workers actually reduce productivity which costs the company money, not to mention the inconvenience to other workers who are infected. Use your sick time.
Wash your hands frequently. The key to removing germs, which could spread infection, is soap, water and friction. Wash your hands briskly and frequently. Keep a hand sanitizer on your person or near you, when a restroom is not readily available.
Eat yogurt or take a supplement containing probiotics. Probiotics are nature’s friendly germs. A large percentage of immune cells, that ward off disease, live in our digestive tract. Keeping a larger percentage of probiotics or beneficial bacteria to harmful bacteria in our intestines helps to ward off colds and flu.
Hydrate your environment, inside and out. Keep a few bowls of warm water around your house to increase moisture inside your house. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day. A lack of adequate hydration lowers the immune system making you susceptible to colds and flu. Drink tap, purified or spring water. Distilled water contains no minerals.
Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Colorful berries provide a natural mix of antioxidants. Orange vegetables are a great source of beta-carotene. Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Thinking in terms of a rainbow of color, of different fruits and vegetables, will ensure that you get the vitamins necessary for good health.
Make sure to get adequate sleep. The average American subsists on two hours less sleep, a night, than our ancestors. Studies suggest that most of us require a little more than eight hours of sleep a night. Lack of adequate sleep causes our bodies to produce fewer antibodies, resulting in a lower immune system. Adequate sleep is crucial to good health. 
Have a regular exercise regimen. Moderate exercise, thirty to sixty minutes, three times a week helps boost immunity. An exhaustive workout can suppress the immune system for the short term. Find an exercise regimen that works for you.
All of these strategies will help you to live a healthier life, as well as provide protection against the flu. Try and make these strategies a part of your everyday life and you should be rewarded with less colds and flu when the flu season hits.

(NC)-With approximately 42,000 mosquitoes for every person in Ontario, most of us spend a great deal of our summers swatting away these pesky insects. Protecting yourself against mosquitoes will not only make your summer more enjoyable, it will help prevent you and your family from getting annoying and sometimes dangerous bug bites.
As a family physician, I recommend the following tips for a bug free summer. 

Stay Scent-Free. Avoid using scented soaps, lotions and shampoos. 
Gear Up. Cover your skin as completely as possible. This may be challenging by the beach, but when possible wear long sleeves, pants and socks. 
Be Colour Conscious. Mosquitoes are attracted to blue, so avoid this colour and stick to neutral colours.
Use Repellent. Repellents containing DEET are most effective for areas with heavy mosquito or tick infestation. 
Alternative Repellents. When applied frequently, citronella-based repellents can provide the same bug protection as products containing low concentrations of DEET. I recommend Natrapel®, which contains 10 percent citronella to ward off bugs for up to two hours. 
Meal Time. Be alert to the time of day when certain insects are most active such as dawn and twilight. 
Check Point. Upon returning indoors, check your children and yourself for bites. 
Treatment. Sunburn and bite treatment products should be included in every outdoor adventurer's travel kit.
