title:Eight Weight Loss Tips

title:Eight Weight Loss Tips
author:Beth Scott
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:10

There are a lot of “crash” diets out there that promise that you’ll drop a considerable amount of weight in days or a week.  I have tried a few of these, and in my experience the weight always comes back on, just as quickly.
One thing you don’t want to do if you are actually serious about losing weight is to follow these fad diets.   After their ineffectiveness has been proven time and again, people will start to wise up to that particular diet, and will head off in search of a new craze.
Lets be honest, people want to lose weight and they want immediate results, but this is just wishful thinking.  To lose weight permanently and effectively it will be a rather slow progress, all depending on your metabolic rate and how much you need to lose.
There are however some proven tried and true methods for aiding in the weight loss process, and I can make you familiar with them.
1. Don’t skip breakfast.  Whatever you do follow this advice, because otherwise you are much more likely in fact prone to binge later in the day.
2. Don’t eat anything for at least an hour before going to bed.
3. Don’t snack while watching TV.  It’s acceptable to eat a meal while watching television, but never is snacking at this time acceptable.
4. Substitute fruits like; bananas, watermelon, plums, peaches, and oranges for sugary treats like; cookies and candy.
5. Substitute honey for sugar, and carob powder for chocolate in all recipes.
6. Eat more vegetables.  This can even be enjoyable if you have a good cookbook like Good housekeeping's latest edition.
7. Avoid unnecessary high calorie foods.
8. Exercise at least a half hour each day for 5 days out of the week.
title:Elder Care Options
author:Thomas LeBlanc
date_saved:2007-07-25 12:30:11

Although our focus is on elder care options it is important to remember that life-changing conditions that threaten independent living are not limited to the elderly. People of any age can experience challenging conditions due to illness or injury that interfere with normal activities of daily living. When a decline in function renders a person unable to live independently, there are many care options to consider in regards to the kind of care they’ll receive and who will provide it.
It is my desire that the following summary of care options will be helpful to those needing care.
Hospitals usually keep patients with acute medical conditions until the acute condition is resolved. However, this is not always long enough to allow the patient to become independent and safe enough to return home.
Hospitals serve an important function by saving the lives of those with life-threatening conditions, but when patients are medically stable they must move to another type of facility.
Because the present healthcare environment imposes tight funding restrictions on hospitals, it forces them to reduce the duration of a patient’s stay. The allotted time is rarely sufficient to return patients to their prior level of function. At this point, patients and/or their family members must decide what to do next.
The care option that’s right for your circumstances depends on availability, accessibility, price, expectations and the patient’s age, condition and recovery potential.
Swing Bed Programs
Progressive hospitals offer Swing Bed Programs. To move from acute care to Swing Bed is no more than a paperwork move. However, patients on the Swing Bed Program can continue to qualify for Medicare benefits as long as they make progress in physical therapy, and as long as they demonstrate good rehab potential.
Rehabilitation is the key in these facilities. Patients are involved in therapeutic exercises, functional training, balance training, and gait training. The Swing Bed Program functions as a skilled nursing facility.
Regional Rehabilitation Centers
Qualifying patients may transfer from an acute hospital to a regional rehabilitation center. These patients receive intensive rehab that usually consists of a combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.
Stays are typically one to three weeks, after which the patient must either transition to their home or to another care facility.
Nursing Homes
Nursing homes, referred to as care homes, convalescent homes, rest homes, and elder care centers, vary in size and type. Skilled nursing homes can, in some cases, carry on the rehabilitation the hospital began. If the patient is able to consistently show physical progress and good rehab potential, Medicare may reimburse for a certain number of days.
Physical therapy and occupational therapy can include therapeutic exercises and training in activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, grooming, etc). When patients reach a plateau in their progress, they are either discharged or sent to a non-skilled nursing facility. Medicare does not provide financial assistance for non-skilled facilities.
The best nursing homes provide restorative services. A restorative aide performs simple exercises and assisted ambulation with patients that do not qualify for the skilled services of a licensed physical therapist. Nursing homes are a good choice for individuals who require lots of care or who lack the rehab potential to progress to a rehabilitation facility.
Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs)
ALFs provide care for individuals who have a much higher level of independence than do those who require a nursing home. They usually have a private apartment-like setting where the residents can be reasonably independent. Meals and varying levels of care are provided.
Assisted living facilities are designed for those who have a good degree of independence, yet are not able to live independently in their own homes. ALF’s typically do not offer physical therapy, exercises programs or restorative therapy services, and Medicare offers no assistance.
Adult Foster Homes
These facilities offer a home-like environment and the best possible staff-to-resident ratio. The State allows a maximum or five residents in Oregon Adult Foster Homes. Other states vary. Residents are given home-cooked meals and activities that are relevant to their interests.
In Oregon, adult foster homes are licensed as level 1, level 2 or level 3, based on the experience and capabilities of the care providers. Level 1 foster homes provide for functional residents who require only minimal assistance in their activities of daily living. Level three residents require care in several activities of daily living and may even be bed bound.
Although adult foster homes specialize in elder care and retirement age residents, people of any age can live in them.
Family Caregiving
Sometimes, families want or need to care for their loved ones in their own home. This seemingly overwhelming task can be handled in two ways: One way is by hiring personal in-home caregivers to provide the needed care. Someone needs to coordinate the caregivers to ensure consistency. When 24-hour care is needed the expense can far exceed any of the above options.
A second option is to personally care for your loved one yourself. This could necessitate leaving your job. This ambitious task can be done if you take care of yourself to prevent burnout and to avoid falling ill. If you take this route you might consider having a personal caregiver come in once or twice a week to relieve you.
Transitional Care
Often, patients are not ready to return home after leaving the hospital. Various life-changing conditions, such as a hip fracture, knee or hip replacement or stroke can make it impossible to safely transition home. Even conditions like pneumonia or bowel obstructions can start the deconditioning process that makes a person less stable on their feet and puts them at risk for falling.
It’s imperative to maximize a patient’s level of function in order to ensure their safe transition home. Transitional care units have emerged to fill this gap. Transitional care units provide various degrees of rehabilitation that can include physical therapy and occupational therapy.

Before you go to an electric stair lift dealer, you want to be armed with all the information you can muster to avoid being talked into something you don’t want or something that won’t fit your situation perfectly.

Now if you have a therapist or professional who can advise you on what you or your loved one will need in particular that’s always ideal.  So to start off with, it’s a good idea to check out at least three different companies selling electric stair lifts.  When you do this, you’ll see why, as prices, quality and service plans can differ.  Keep in mind that as in most industries there are always bad apples preying off people’s lack of knowledge.

So get a feel for the company that you feel most comfortable and one that seem reputable.  It may help to ask each company to provide you with a list of customers that you can call or even visit.

Usually at the electric stair lift dealership, you’ll be able to personally test their stair lifts.  Looking at a stair lift and actually trying one out are two very different things!

Thanks to improved technology, stair lifts are quieter and can be installed on almost all stair cases.  Watch out for companies selling older technology disguised as something new.

Most reputable companies will guarantee their electric stair lifts for a year or more.  Notice what you’ll have to pay after your one-year warranty expires.  You don’t want to be sucker-punched with a big “re-guarantee warranty” fee. You want to make sure that your service plan includes having the stair lift inspected every six months and serviced annually. It would also be ideal to have it in your plan where you can get emergency call-out service.

When you search online for Electric Wheelchairs, like any other things, you will face a situation, where you will need to choose a provider out of so many companies that offer the service.   The search engines will bring you thousands and thousands of results when you type the phrase “Electric Wheelchairs.”    Which vendor or provider to choose?   It is important that you make an informed decision.
Things to look for when choosing an Electric Wheelchair:
First, it is good to check the company’s track record and make sure that the company, which provider Electric Wheelchairs is a very good company to do business with.   When I buy big-ticket product from a company that I don’t know of, I always check the company’s record with the Better Business Bureau.   You can do that by going to .
While large companies may offer a great service, our experience has been that with the smaller or midsize companies you get a more personalized attention.   For example an unknown company such as Jaki Med, based in Charlotte, NC, (Tel. 866.569-7877, they also provide other related supplies) may offer a better service than a large company who will run continuous ads on your TV screen.   Why, because you get a personalized service, and a small company will try to do a better job to put a good word out there about its services.
A good company will also offer a free transportation during the product delivery and will service is free for a reasonable time.   Ask the company if they could provide you with few previous customers with whom you could speak directly and find out what experience they had with your possible Electric Wheelchair provider.   You might also want to ask from the company, to get some references that they have from the doctors for whose patients they have provided Electric Wheelchairs in the past.
A good company that provides Electric Wheelchairs should be able to assist you while doing the paper work for an insurance coverage.
Those are few things, but not all, that you might want to consider when choosing an Electric Wheelchair provider.   You definitely want that the user of the Electric Wheelchair enjoy his or her way of mobility and enjoy life fully.

Several years ago, my daughter, a 17 years old college Freshman, was paralyzed from the waist down as the result of a fall. She was determined to continue on with college and needed a way to get around the campus. Fortunately an electric mobility scooter provided her with the freedom and mobility she needed during that difficult period in her life.

Without the aid of the electric mobility scooter, my daughter would have had to drop out of college and return home until she could recover, and at that time, no one knew if she would ever recover her ability to walk again. Thank God, she did regain her ability to walk only a short time later, but nevertheless, the electric mobility scooter provided not only the physical freedom and mobility but also the psychological boost she needed during the crisis period.

Electric wheelchairs and power mobility scooters deliver power mobility to elderly, seriously ill, and disabled individuals. Today, more than ever before, electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters help people, like my daughter, with limited mobility regain their freedom and independence.

"For 38% of the 54 million Americans with disabilities, mobility limitations and impairments are permanent. For these individuals, a variety of mobility aids and devices are necessary in order to provide support, motion and access, as well as to enable them to lead active and fulfilling lives."
-- United Cerebral Palsy of New York City,

* Electric Wheelchairs vs. Electric Mobility Scooters

An electric wheelchair is a personal mobility device that usually has six wheels and is steered using a "joystick". Sometimes referred to as a motorized wheelchair, power wheelchair, or just power chairs, they generally offer superior in-home maneuverability, fit almost anywhere and turn on a dime. An electric wheelchair is primarily designed for people who need help getting around indoors.

The power mobility provided by electric wheelchairs has made a dramatic difference in many people's lives. The development of new technology in the industry has made it possible for citizens to obtain smaller, more lightweight and maneuverable motorized wheelchairs for use inside the home allowing people to move about in small places and complete their activities of daily living without being bed-bound or sent to nursing homes.

Medical electric mobility scooters, on the other hand, are personal electric scooters that have either three or four wheels and steer much like a bicycle, using a set of handlebars. Electric scooters are ideal for out-of-home activities, as they glide smoothly and easily over a variety of surfaces. There are even portable motorized scooters that can be stowed in the trunk of your car to take along with you.

Today's electric wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters are easy-to-use, comfortable, safe and reliable.

Mobility is a critical aspect of everyday life. Being mobile enhances a person's ability to learn, interact with others, earn a living and participate in community life.

"Growth of the mobility-impaired community is increasing as the population ages, as the effects of obesity, and other neurological, rheumatoid, and physical ailments impair mobility. In addition, demand for power wheelchairs has grown due to demographics, technology development and consumer awareness."
-- National Spinal Cord Injury Association,

* Electric Wheelchairs and Electric Mobility Scooters Cost Considerations

Electric wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters are usually available at little or NO cost to you, depending upon your insurance qualifications.

For Medicare coverage consideration, a written prescription for a scooter or power wheelchair must be received by a supplier from a primary care physician or treating practitioner within 30 days of a face-to-face examination.

To see if you qualify for a low cost or no cost electric wheelchair or mobility scooter, contact a professional mobility consultant who will work with your doctor to identify your mobility needs, coordinate your Medicare or insurance benefits and determine the best mobility solution for you.

Don't let physical impairments keep you down. Regain your freedom of mobility and independence with the electric wheelchair or mobility scooter that's right for you.

Electrical Current As Pain Management

Word Count:

With recent research revealing data that might indicate magnetism as a potential way of pain relief, some scientists are curious whether or not the closely related force of electricity might also yield similar benefits. There are already some devices with use electrical current as a from of pain management, but there is no concrete clinical data confirming their effects. As of now, all electrical pain relief devices operate strictly on a theoretical basis.

pain management

Article Body:
Electricity, the natural force that Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla engaged in a bitter rivalry over due to differing

theories, is quite a subject of human fascination. Like magnetism, many charlatans of the late 19th and early 20th centuries

claimed to have developed devices that could do everything from increase breast sizes, to curing illnesses like tuberculosis.

For the most part, these claims were fraudulent. However, recent evidence is starting to suggest that at least one claim of

these clever tricksters was not entirely false in nature. In the same way that testing is being conducted to determine what

effects magnetic fields have on pain management, some are theorizing that the closely-related force of electricity might also

yield benefits for relieving acute and chronic pain.

There is still quite a bit of controversy surrounding the supposed effects of electricity in the area of pain management, as

well as a heated debate over whether or not it has any effects at all. Still, some scientists have found the idea plausible,

largely due to the data obtained from testing conducted with magnetism. Magnetism and electricity have always been closely

related by science, so some find it reasonable to try and discern if electrical currents, properly conducted through the

body, can achieve effects similar to exposure to a magnetic field. The effect of causing pain is widely known, with death by

electric shock being among the many ways that Hollywood killers dispatch of their victims. However, the main interest of the

current generation of researchers lies in whether or not electrical current can dull the sensation of pain.

It is no secret that a small amount of electrical current travels through the human body, though only recently has it been

found that electrical stimulation of the brain can induce the release of endorphins, chemicals which can dull the pain

sensation. Naturally, the current has to be precisely applied and controlled, largely due to the risks of disrupting the

delicate balance of the brain. Others believe that the current itself can be used to directly fight pain, such as by

hindering or blocking pain signals from the brain to the body. Market-available devices that use this method, which are

largely used for back pain management, with adjustable settings to increase or decrease the current as the patient sees fit.

A more intense version of devices such as this has been developed, but require being implanted deeper under the skin.

The above examples apply alternating current in relieving pain. Another method, known as galvanic stimulation, applies direct

current, and often finds use in treating muscle injuries or cases with major trauma to bodily tissues. The afflicted areas

where galvanic stimulation is applied generally have experienced bleeding or swelling due to the injury. The direct current

is believed to generate an electrical field in the afflicted area, which is maintained by both positive and negative

electrical pads. In theory, the positive electrical pads reduce the flow of blood to the afflicted area to relieve swelling

and pain, similar to how ice packs work. In contrast, the negative pads are believed to increase circulation and,

theoretically, stimulate the healing process. Instructions for their appropriate use come with the pads themselves, though

patients may also inquire about their use with their doctors.

Electronic Air Cleaners – Low Maintenance for Big Improvements in Air Quality

Electronic air cleaners are a simple and effective but low maintenance method of cleaning the air you breath.

Electronic air cleaners, Electronic air purifiers, Filterless Air Purifiers

Article Body:
Electronic air cleaners are a relatively inexpensive and low maintenance way of removing airborne particles from the atmosphere in your home. Using electrostatic technology to provide a sort of filterless air purifier, electronic air cleaners are a safe way to keep your air particle, fume and dust-free.

These filterless air purifiers work by using the scientific principle of electrostatics. This law means that substances with opposite charges are attracted to one another, and electronic air purifiers harness the power of this principle by collecting the air and giving any particles gathered a charge. The charge emitted by electronic air cleaners is completely harmless to humans, but draws the collected particles to a plate within the cleaner, where they remain, safety extracted from your breathing air.

Electronic air cleaners are ninety five percent effective in removing particles and fumes from the air in your home, collecting the offending substances on plates stored safely inside the purifier. Some people find the disadvantage of electronic air cleaners to lie exactly here – these collection plates must be cleaned regularly in order to maintain the unit’s efficiency. This is, however, a relatively simple task – the collection plates are cleaned by wiping them with a damp cloth. This simple maintenance task ensures that your electronic air purifier continues to be effective in keeping your environment dust, fume and particle-free.

Look for electronic air cleaners with good-sized collection plates, as this will increase the effectiveness of your machine, and reduce the frequency of cleaning. Air cleaners with a more powerful electric field will also increase efficiency, creating cleaner air for you.

So while parts of this filterless air purifier still need to be cleaned, the effectiveness of electronic air purifiers makes them a popular choice regardless of this small maintenance chore. And removing ninety five percent of offending particles from the air in your home, electronic air cleaners will help provide your family with an environment that is safe and healthy for everyone. Well worth the work!

Electronic air cleaners are a simple and effective but low maintenance method of cleaning the air you breath.

Electronic Smoking Cigarettes - A Healthier Alternative?

Word Count:

Those who wish to avoid the tar in cigarette smoke but do not want to quit smoking can now use electronic cigarettes, a state-of-the-art alternative.

E-MiniCig, E-Pack, USB-eCig, E-Cigar, E-Cigarillo, E-Cigarette, E-Pipe, E-Cartridge, E-Liquid

Article Body:
Tobacco companies won't admit that smoking is an addiction but everyone knows it is so. And it is an addiction that's powerful enough to keep millions smoking tobacco and jeopardizing their health. The tar in cigarette smoke is a carcinogen and tobacco contains many other harmful substances. That's why no matter how pleasant smoking may be, almost every smoker has thought about quitting. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. But there is an alternative now - in electronic smoking cigarettes.

With just about everything else benefiting from the rapid advances in technology, electronic cigarettes should come as no surprise. Let me explain the idea behind it. If you're a smoker who has tried to quit, you know that it's not just the rush from the nicotine that makes it hard to kick the habit. It's also a psychological thing. Holding the cigarette or pipe, lighting up after dinner or during a break, tasting and twirling the smoke. So what if you could have all that, but without the tar and other carcinogens of tobacco smoke?

This is where electronic smoking comes in. It doesn't do away with nicotine, so there are no withdrawal symptoms. Unlike patches or gum, it also doesn't take away the physical aspect of a cigarette, a cigar, a pipe or a cigarillo; it does replace them with an e-cigarette, e-cigar, e-pipe and e-cigarillo. These smoking products use sophisticated, patented technology to vaporize special liquids, not surprisingly called an e-liquid, to produce smoke and deliver nicotine just as if you were smoking a real cigarette. For those who like the comforting glow of burning tobacco when they inhale, those e-smoking products even have a little light that simulates the glow when you inhale. Not necessary as far as I am concerned, but the makers apparently thought it added a nice touch.

So the idea here is to simulate smoking, down to getting that nice nicotine rush and the smoke, without actually burning tobacco with all its associated negative health aspects. But if there is still smoke, isn't that bad for you anyway? Well, it'd probably be better not to smoke at all, but if tar from smoking is the primary concern, there is none.

How does one use electronic smoking products? Do you just flip out an e-pack, smoke and then discard the cigarette butt? Nope; it's all different. Since the e-cigarette has a rechargeable battery and a liquid container for the smoking liquid, you use it over and over again. In that sense it is more like a pipe where you don't discard the pipe but simply put in more tobacco. Likewise, you don't discard electronic smoking products; you simply put in a new e-cartridge and occasionally recharge the battery (there's even a USB-eCig that doesn't need a battery; you just plug it into a USB port on your computer).

Do all e-cigarettes (there are also "e-MiniCig" tiny cigarettes) taste the same? They don't. There are a couple of dozen tastes to select from, including those of some leading cigarette brands, and there are also different nicotine levels, from none at all to extra-high. There is no doubt that electronic smoking cigarettes require getting used to, and the technology is probably still in its infancy, but smokers who are really concerned about tar may want to take a look at e-cigs.

Elements of generic cialis price through marketing reports and analysis

As with most medications, marketing reports are available in regard to Generic Cialis price and other elements to the medication. Generic Viagra price will be detailed in these marketing reports, as well. A marketing report will provide you with an understanding of what is moving on the market and which medications are increasing in sales, production and pricing. Marketing is a sometimes complex issue that involves the aspect of supply and demand. As demand for certain goods or services increases, the supply must be increased. This will often lead to an increase in price.

Prices will rise or fall, generally based on the demand of the public who is seeking out certain goods. Inflation will often lend to an increase of products, goods and services; however it is the demand of goods that will inevitably lead to increases. Once a good, such as a popular erectile dysfunction medication, is found to be of value to the public, the demand will rise and the manufacturers will attempt to meet that demand by increasing production. Increased production will lead to increased price. As manufactures try to keep up with sometimes vastly large demands, the production costs will rise. A part of that rise will be passed onto suppliers, and in turn, the consumer.

author:Lynn VanDyke

Consumers may soon be able to purchase a brand new over the counter weight loss pill.  Federal health advisors have already given their go ahead, but it still needs FDA approval before it goes on sale nationwide.  GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare is in position to offer this fat blocking pill to the public.  They are shooting for a release date by the end of this year.
Consumers want to know if this is ground breaking news or if this is another attempt to rob them of their hard earned cash.  The difference between this new diet pill, called orlistat and currently being sold with a doctor's prescription as Xenical, and several others from the past are that orlistat is garnering nationwide media and public interest.
"Everyone is getting excited about taking a magic pill," states Lynn VanDyke, elite personal fitness professional and fitness nutritionist.  "It all sounds brilliantly simple until we read about its side effects and cost."
In 6 month clinical trials, obese people taking orlistat lost 5.3 - 6.2 pounds more than those given a placebo.  Representatives from GlaxoSmithKline also announced that at $12-$25 per week for the pill over 5 million people in America would buy the drug if it sold over the counter.
VanDyke explains, "The corporations are planning on making over $1 billion per year in sales if orlistat is sold over the counter.  As consumers we must educate ourselves and hold ourselves personally responsible.  This drug has shown unpleasant side effects in half of the trial participants.  That's just outrageous."
GlaxoSmithKline lists orlistat's possible side effects as loose and oily stools, gas, incontinence and oily spotting.  Even the FDA panel members are concerned with how this diet pill will interact with diabetics, bulimics, organ transplant patients and those taking other prescription pills.  Watchdog groups such as Public Citizen urged the panel to reject the company's application, calling it a "desperate attempt to revive this barely effective drug by an OTC switch."
"All in all, the magic pill leaves you bloated and oily.  It stops working once you stop taking it.  That adds up to between $288 and $600 per 6 months.  That is how long the GlaxoSmithKline recommends taking this pill before stopping for a break.  I would much rather learn a few simple tools on how to eat well and live a healthy life than take this so-called miracle pill," says VanDyke.
Consumers who are in dire straits to lose fat but are concerned with the side effects and cost of orlistat are being referred to the Melt the Fat Interactive Guide (more info at  It provides detailed step-by-step processes that develop a healthy lifestyle filled with fitness, eating to live and life goal setting.

Considering an elliptical trainer? Wondering how an elliptical trainer can benefit you?
This article will list several unique benefits of working out with an elliptical trainer.  If you're trying to decide between an eliptical trainer and another piece of exercise equipment, here are some unique elliptical trainer benefits:
·  No Impact:
Recently my 60-year-old mother tried my elliptical trainer and she was shocked at how easy it felt on her joints (she's a regular treadmill user).
Elliptical trainer workouts are safe on the joints and provide a no impact workout (as opposed to a treadmill where you feet hit the deck with every step).  This is ideal for people with back, knee, hips and joint problems as well as older people looking for a no-impact workout.
·  Weight Bearing Exercise:
While using an elliptical machine gives you a no-impact workout, the resistance exercise still helps to build bone density and fight off osteoporosis.
As well, weight-bearing exercise helps you burn calories much more efficiently (and keeps your calorie burn high for several hours after a workout)
·  Saves Time
Because most elliptical trainers incorporate upper body arms, elliptical workouts tend to involve the whole body and give you an overall better workout - meaning you burn more calories in less time. That's always a benefit.
Elliptical trainers have also been proven to offer a lower 'Perceived Rate of Exertion' when working out.  This means that you're doing more work and burning more calories while feeling like you put out less effort.
·  Fights Boredom & Great For Crosstraining
Because elliptical trainers are a mix between the treadmill and a stair climber you have a great opportunity to cross-train.
I was actually shocked when, after using my elliptical for a month, I could easily climb a very steep hill that had almost wiped me out before.  My fitness level had skyrocketed and I didn't even know it.
Plus, the fact that you can move backwards on an elliptical as well as download workout programs from the Internet (with iFit compatibility that many ellipticals offer), you won't get bored easily.  That means more workouts and more calories burned!
·  Space Efficient
Most elliptical trainers are smaller than a treadmill and can be more easily moved to clean or to store away when company is coming.  If you are cramped for space or have a smaller home gym, an elliptical trainer can be a great way to save space while getting an overall body workout
So those are some of the most prevalent benefits of using an elliptical trainer.  Keep in mind that elliptical trainers are not for everyone.  However they do offer some great workout features that would benefit any athlete - from beginner to elite!

When I joined my first commercial gym back in 1988 I began to explore new approaches to weight training. The wide assortment of weight training equipment was staggering for someone who had worked out in the basement for years with just a barbell set and a weight bench. My new gym had a vast array of equipment -- Olympic plates, exercise benches, power rack, leg presses, etc. My weight training was about to enter a radical new phase that would propel my gains to the next level.
By contrast, in a small area at the front of the gym was the cardio section. The selection of equipment was limited to a few different brands of stationary bikes and a rowing machine. There were no treadmills or elliptical trainers. The elliptical trainer was another 7 years away. Basically it was the stationary bike or nothing. At the time, this was fine since I was much more focused on weight training. I’d hop on a stationary bike for 10 minutes for a quick warm-up prior to commencing my weight workout.
I stuck with stationary bikes for many years. I eventually became aware of the need to increase my cardio work. My time on the stationary bike increased to 30 minutes and I also began setting aside sessions that were dedicated to cardio and ab training. I tried stationary bikes from Schwinn, Tunturi, and Life Fitness. I eventually settled on the newer bikes from Life Fitness, which for me had the smoothest feel and best consoles.
However, I never really enjoyed my cardio sessions on the stationary bike. It was just too darn boring! Sure, I tried reading magazines, but I didn’t like the distraction when I was going for a higher intensity workout.
I was very grateful when my gym installed its first NordicTrack skiers. It was night and day compared to the stationary bike. Several years later I switched over to elliptical trainers and there’s been no looking back.
So why are stationary bikes still with us? It would seem that the explosive popularity of treadmills and ellipticals would have pushed them to the wayside. Though stationary bikes have given up market share to treadmills and ellipticals they still have a strong following and for several good reasons:
*Like elliptical trainers, stationary bikes are low impact machines. They minimize the forces on the knees, ankles, and feet. Great for people who have joint problems or are rehabilitating after knee surgery.
*Stationary bikes can provide a strenuous cardio workout and are more than adequate for burning fat.
*Unlike elliptical trainers, stationary bikes can actually be used to build up leg muscles – quadriceps and calves. Of course, this requires progressively increasing the resistance on a continual basis. In my opinion, it’s better to keep the focus on either fat burning or cardio conditioning and use weight training for muscle building.
*Stationary bikes take up less space than elliptical trainers, which makes them a better choice for people who have limited space in their homes.
*Stationary bikes are less expensive than comparable ellipticals.
*Stationary bikes have a lot of appeal to people who enjoy cycling or mountain biking.
Some of the cons:
*Stationary bikes are not weight bearing, which means that you should engage in weight training or switch up with a treadmill or elliptical trainer to get this bone-strengthening benefit.
*Stationary bikes only engage the muscles of the lower body unlike most ellipticals, which also involve the arms. This in turn gets your heart rate up quicker making for a more efficient exercise.
*For some people, like myself, stationary bikes can be on the boring side. Decide for yourself on this point.
*A sore butt from extended sessions.
*Studies have suggested that men may be at an increased risk for impotence from over use of stationary bikes. The jury is still out on this study, but it is certainly something to pay attention to. At least there’s no risk of this from using an elliptical trainer!
Like most decisions it comes down to what fits in best with your preferences and lifestyle. The important thing is to make a decision, don’t look back, and use whatever piece of exercise equipment you choose on a regular basis. That’s the only way you’ll start seeing results!

One of the most frequently asked questions is do the use of elliptical trainers help me burn calories compared to other cardio machines?
With our busy schedules it is completely understandable that you want to get the most results for the time you spend working out.
As you may know how many calories burned during a workout will vary depending upon your weight. A 150 pound woman may only burn 387 calories while a 180 pound man may burn 500 calories on the same machine for the same length of time.
Many elliptical trainer companies say you can burn around 800 calories per hour of elliptical training workout. The following factors dictate how many calories you will actually burn during your workout:
- Workout Duration - This is simply how much time you spend on the specific workout. It is usually recommended that you do it for a half hour to an hour.
- Interval Training - Taking small breaks, followed by a cool down period is recommended for extended workouts.
- Elliptical Tension Settings - These tension settings help you control the intensity of the workout. Using a higher intensity can improve the effects of the workout.
- Current weight - as stated earlier a heavier person will burn more calories than a smaller person.
Are you interested in a few more tips to burn more calories with your elliptical trainer? Below are a few suggestions you can follow to burn more calories.
- Built in interval settings:
Nearly all elliptical trainers offer an incline and or even tension that you are able to increase or even lessen while workout out.
Midway through your workout try increasing the tension or incline to give you an extra push at burning more calories. This can also help raise your calorie burn for a few hours after your workout.
- Utilize Upper Body Arms
Many ellipticals offer you upper body arm blocks that you are able to utilize to build your arms muscles into your workout. Even more muscles worked = even more calories burned. If there are no upper body arms, grab a few of two - five pounds handweights and swing your arms while striding.
-Split your work outs:
Experts are today telling us that two smaller "mini-workouts" can even be better than one long workout as far as how many calories are burned.
Exercise with speed up your metabolism, doing one workout in the morning and one in the evening will give you two metabolism "boosts."
All in all an elliptical trainer is a great way to burn a ton of calories.

Amidst confusion and controversy over the safety and efficacy of Emagrece Sim, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has finally released a formal warning to consumers. The warning states that the use of Emagrece Sim and Herbathin Dietary Supplements may be harmful. In fact Emagrece Sim, also known as the Brazilian Diet Pill contains a cocktail of dangerous ingredients, some of which are controlled substances and found in prescription drugs. The side effects of the use of Emagrece Sim may be serious and the FDA is advising that use could result in injury.
The drug is made by Brazilian pharmaceutical companys Fitoterapicos and also Phytotherm Sim. reports that all efforts are currently being made to stop further shipments of Emagrece Sim from entering the United States although the task may prove difficult. The current demand for weight loss drugs is almost insatiable in the majority of the country however the FDA hopes that by alerting their field staff, they may be able to contain much of the traffic.
Although Emagrece Sim is currently the focus for authorities, experts are saying that there is a growing problem with potentially dangerous products entering the U.S. market. Like Emagrece Sim, the unknown quantities and quality of many drugs that claim to assist people with weight loss, is becoming a serious problem.
Emagrece Sim actually contains a drug called Fenproporex, a stimulant that the body converts to amphetamine. This means that aside from the immediate health risks of taking Emagrece Sim, people may unwitting find themselves failing urinalysis testing for amphetamines. The drug comes in pill form and is available in a range of strengths although all levels of potency have now been outlawed says . Unfortunately Emagrece Sim is still available on the internet, but the emphasis is now on educating people of the dangers of this weight loss formula before irreversible damage is done.
Emergency Birth Control: An Overview

Word Count:

Although conventional birth control methods are highly effective in preventing unplanned pregnancies, there is always a margin of error for mistakes and accidents. This article provides information on what constitutes a pregnancy, the different forms of emergency birth control, and how these EBC methods work.

Article Body:
While available modern contraception methods are highly effective at preventing unplanned pregnancies, human error and some irregularities can cause them to fail. A condom may break due to a lack of lubrication or a scheduled pill intake might be missed due to a lot of activities. A lot of people have sex without realizing that they are unprotected and for this reason, emergency birth control is developed.

What is emergency birth control?

Emergency birth control, also known as EBC, is the general term used to describe a variety of methods used to prevent pregnancies after one had unprotected sex. The medical industry defines EBC as a preventative method since it does not terminate an existing pregnancy but rather prevents one form actually occurring. Medicine defines a pregnancy as the point in time when a fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus. When an egg, despite being fertilized, is not implanted in the uterus, a pregnancy cannot exist. This is what EBC prevents; the implantation of a fertilized egg inside the uterus.

Given this, there are some things EBC is not.

    * EBC is not an abortifacient. It does not induce abortion or terminate any existing pregnancies.
    * EBC is not a form of regular birth control. It is only used after having unprotected sex.
    * EBC is not only a “Morning After Pill,” it can be taken three days after having unprotected sex.

What are the available forms of EBC?

EBC come in two forms: pills and Copper-T Intrauterine Device. The pills, usually referred to as “Morning After Pills,” are available through prescription while the Copper-T IUD must be inserted and fitted by a gynecologist.

EBC Pills

Emergency birth control pills are similar to regular BCP except for the higher hormonal content. As such, EBC pills also come in two kinds: combination and progestin-only pills. Although both are highly effective, progestin-only pills are found to have fewer side effects and more effective than combination pills.

Copper-T Intrauterine Device

Like most contraception IUDs, Copper-T IUD must be fitted by a gynecologist or clinician to minimize risks of infection. This IUD can be used for five days after having unprotected sex. Strict supervision of a clinician or gynecologist must be sought when using IUDs since these devices can increase risks of infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease.

How EBC works?

Contrary to popular belief, a woman does not get pregnant immediately after having unprotected sex. Clinically, pregnancy is a process the reproductive system undergoes for at least five days after unprotected sex. EBC works by preventing the successful implantation of a fertilized egg inside the uterus. Since it can take a sperm at least hours or days before it can find and fertilize an egg and for the fertilized egg to travel and implant itself in the uterus, EBC can interrupt this process when taken immediately following unprotected sex. EBC, in the case of pills, raises the body's hormone levels to a point that it is intolerable for the fertilized egg. For IUD EBC, it blocks the way into the uterus which prevents a fertilized egg from implanting itself.

Regardless of the type of EBC a woman uses, it is important to have a proper consultation with a clinician or gynecologist to ensure the maximum efficacy of the chosen method. Of course, safe sex and using effective regular birth control methods are the best ways to prevent unplanned pregnancies.
